I watched a documentary on the life in the US.

So many people are homeless.

They sleep in their cars or some of them use clothes and tarpuline to build a small structure on the road side where they sleep at night.

They cannot afford house rent which is very high.

There are millions of white American citizens who are suffering like this.

Some are jobless and depend on charity.

I was surprised when I saw that documentary.

Op...either u are lazy or u are doing big boy...y should u hv a car over there when they have a very good transportation network...if we did here , most people will not have cars... its cheaper to buy stuff over there than here... the produce in the US so things are cheaper, we import here so things are expensive... if u spend 5k to buy a car in the US, I will have to spend almost 2ice tge amount to drive that same car here cos I will pay for shipping and duty here which is very expensive...our money has lost value which is a major advantage to u ... I'm sure u decided to live in a place equivalent to festac, surulere or ajah in USA, instead of u to go look for house around places equivalent to mushin, badagry, oshodi ikorodu or ajegunle ... I'm also sure u spend on luxury goods

A 100K monthly salary earner in Nigeria is better than a 400K monthly salary earner in the United States.

The luxury lifestyles some of us live here with 100K, cannot sustain us a day over there. We can’t try such in US and save a dim.

Some of our annual rent here is weekly/ monthly rent over there. Can you pay over 100K naira monthly house rent with 400K monthly salary here in Nigeria? You can’t do that, but you don’t have a choice over there. You pay or kicked out of the house.

Some of our people over there are becoming wiser now. They don’t mind sleeping on the streets, work for at least 5-10yrs, move back to Nigeria with their savings. You cannot survive with 100M living comfortably a year over there. Tax go finish you up. But you can live large with 100M for 5yrs or more here in Nigeria depends on your lifestyles tho.

You don’t pay unnecessary tax here. But in foreign countries you pay almost everything.
In naija you can own 10 cars..not in the United States because you pay for packing space for each car. You get the point now?

Some of our people in diaspora, once they earn $10K in a month or so, depends on the job, they’d send $9K down to their Nigeria account and keep $1K for their upkeep. Some would buy lands and build houses for rent or some other businesses.
If you don’t do that, you’d work all your life and come back with nothing. Those of you on this method are wise. But becareful of the people you send your money to here. Trust no one! Get a trustworthy lawyer involved.

U can make unnecessary noise or play loud music here. You can’t try such over there and not find yourself in police cell.

So you see….We are privileged here. We only need to get bad political leaders off the way. By getting involved in politics, national, state, LGA and community affairs. That’s how American youth you admire, do.

They don’t just fold hands, wailing and waiting for a miracle. They debate, disagree, challenge, involved and create. You get the point now?

Then why are you still there?
Come back to Nigeria and start earning 100k and let's see how you'll survive.
People will just be discouraging us not to bother escaping this Godforsaken Nigeria yet they themselves will never want to come back so we can face the battle here together.

This article would have made more sense if you explained it with the actual fact and figure rather than describing it. You made it sound as if you are not living there or like you are giving us there say there say story. For instance, tell us the actual amount of the bills.

I don't quite agree. That 100k is for 1 month. Where as, there are menial jobs in the US that can pay $10 per hour. Lets calculate. 10 per hour times 8 hours, times 5 days in a week, times current exchange rate. The person would earn more than you earn in a month in 1 week.
Now me wey dey earn 100k per month. Do you expect me to eat only kote fish or pomo? Food cannot be considered a luxury. I guess the op has not been to the market in a while to know the level of food inflation.
Also earning power and purchasing power of both countries are different.

I didnt want to comment on this but OP you are right and at the same time you are wrong.

Firstly, yes Abroad is very tough, so tough that there are some people i know, they only do fraud to live a luxury life in the UK for instance.

Imagine doing fraud before you can live a very very luxury comfortable life.

On the other hand, Nigeria is hard too, not to mention the recent INFLATION and the low purchasing power of the naira.

Rememeber everything in Nigeria is imported so luxury or no luxury, basic goods or no basic goods, everything that is bought in nigeria came from somewhere so how strong the naira is ultimately determines how luxurious life would be in Nigeria

Yes it is true, i know someone who works abroad as a security officer and deliberately lives a frugal lifestyle for like 5 years living in a shared apartment to save on rent and eating the same food everyday and after 5 years the amount of money he came to Nigeria with, his generation would never suffer again

But at the same time, look at nigeria and see how every 5 years businesses fold and close down, 10 million naira can vanish down on a business here in nigeria without a trace

From dishonest employees, to kidnappers to armed robbers to government policies, to the POOR PURCHASING POWER OF THE NAIRA.

Reason why i said this topic is right and wrong, Abroad can fetch you good money but it has it own question marks before, during and after you have made it

Nigeria too can fetch you crazy money but the trick is its easier to go abroad and raise the capital for the money you can come back to nigeria to make but NIGERIAN PROBLEMS await you such as the ones mentioned above and even just electricity alone can fustrate anyone

So honestly this topic keeps coming up and up again

So just my two cents oooo

I think what OP is trying to talk about is the PPP (Purchasing Power Parity).

In a lay man’s term, comparing currencies isn’t just as easy as the exchange rate. For example, you see people say they are better off in “Dubai” because they are earning 400k there. They are always quick to convert it to Naira and at that point it looks big to you that is earning 30k in Nigeria.

The big/important question is, what would 400k do for you in Dubai and what would it do for you in Nigeria?

How much is a bottle of coke there?
How much is a plate of rice?
How much is transport fare?
Etc...

If these things are not at equilibrium, then it is advisable you look WELL before you leap.

Don’t allow any agent to tell you, you would earn 400k in Azerbaijani. An educated mind should ask some questions, else you would soon realize 400k isn’t always 400k. If you know what I mean.
