Politics / Peter Obi Defends IPOB by Princeyema: 4:40pm On Jul 13, 2023
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi has defended the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as he sparked mixed reactions about his membership in the terrorist organization.

Obi in a statement posted on his official Twitter page on Thursday, July 13, 2023, said the sit-at-home orders in the Southeast region are not issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) but by an unknown criminal enterprise.

He also commended south-eastern governors for their efforts in curbing criminal activities in the region, and called for more strategic and intelligence-driven approaches to reduce the suffering on citizens.

The former Anmabra state governor who saw the incessant killings and havoc caused by unknown gunmen suspected to be IPOB as mere “continued disruption of business and social activities in the South East”, however, described insecurity in other parts of the country, especially in the Northcentral as “mindless bloodletting.”

His statement reads; “The violent attacks in the North Central states of Benue and Plateau lately took a new twist with high records of kidnapping, arson, and loss of human lives. According to the 1st Quarter Mass Atrocities Casualty Tracking Report, over 1230 Nigerians were killed.

“What is going on in the South East therefore is essentially a criminal activity that must be nipped in the bud, with all hands being on deck, security agencies, and the people alike.

“The South East Governors are to be commended for their renewed efforts at curbing this menace but there is a need to be more strategic and intelligence-driven in our approach to reducing the suffering of innocent people.

“79 of them security operatives, with over 600 abductions in the first quarter of this year alone. With what has been happening in the North Central and Zamfara state lately the figure as of today will be mind-boggling even far more than the deaths recorded in Russia/Ukraine ongoing carnage.
“It’s unacceptable that hundreds of innocent lives will continue to be wasted in Nigeria needlessly through communal clashes, bandits, and kidnapping activities. The situation in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau states has raised a lot of anxiety because of the number of lives and properties lost with very little resistance from security operatives.

“Also disturbing is the continued disruption of business and social activities in the South East region over the Sit-at-Home directive purported to be coming from the ndigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, when the body has publicly denied issuing such directive. What is going on in the South East therefore is essentially a criminal activity that must be nipped in the bud, with all hands being on deck, security agencies, and the people alike.

“The South East Governors are to be commended for their renewed efforts at curbing this menace but there is a need to be more strategic and intelligence-driven in our approach to reducing the suffering of innocent people.

Security agencies should take necessary and quick steps to arrest the ugly incidents because the country cannot just be spilling the blood of innocent citizens. We as a people through our various governments should up our value for human lives in the way and manner we respond to issues that touch lives.

“The implications of an insecure environment for development are far-reaching because no investor will consider going to an area where their resources will not be safe and secured. Therefore, I will like to urge critical stakeholders in these areas, traditional, Christian, and Muslim leaders to continue pushing for peace among their people in the way and manner they conduct themselves.

The various governments at all levels should also take deliberate steps to address the issue of poverty and youth unemployment because the provision of stomach infrastructure is the surer way to tackle insecurity. Also, urgent steps should be taken consciously and intentionally to ameliorate the hardship of the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, his comments on IPOB have generated controversies among Nigerians. Many called him an hypocrite and expressed happiness that he never won the election where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged victorious.
Others, however, commended him, saying he has rebranded face of opposition in the country and also lambasted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for remaining silent despite the incessant attacks in some places in the country.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday tactically walked out a member for improper dressing.
The House rules proscribe a dress code for members attending plenary with members expected to wear a suit and tie or in traditional dress with a cap to match.

The member, whose name could not be ascertained, walked into plenary towards the end of the day’s proceedings and sat in the second used as an alternative Chamber by the members.
Raising of order, Hon. Billy Osaweru (APC, Edo) drew the attention of the House to the mode of dressing, which he said contravened the dress code for members of the House.

He said: “Mr. Speaker, our rules state the need for proper dressing while coming for plenary. Mr. Speaker, if you look upstairs, there is a member in Chamber wearing a T-Shirt and jean trousers.”

Politics / Second Niger Bridge Vandalised Barely Two Months After Being Opened For Vehicula by Princeyema: 3:44pm On Jul 12, 2023
Some road fittings installed on the newly inaugurated Second Niger bridge have been stolen by vandals.

Some road fittings installed on the newly inaugurated Second Niger bridge have been stolen by vandals.
A source in the Ministry of Works confirmed this development on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

The source said that the expansion joint walkway on axis 330 of the bridge had been stolen. This newspaper learnt that this is a critical part of the bridge that helps to absorb expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature.

The theft of the road fittings could pose a safety hazard to motorists. The damaged part can cause discomfort to motorists and could even lead to accidents.

The source said, “Unfortunately, It’s true. The stolen fitting is an element from the expansion joints of the bridge. Drivers on that road have to be careful as the damaged part can cause discomfort to motorists.”
Recall that on May 23, the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, commissioned the N336 billion bridge, via an online platform, Zoom alongside seven other infrastructural projects.

The former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, announced the completion of the bridge at a briefing in October 2022 after almost five decades of failed promises by successive administrations.

On December 15, 2022, the Federal Government also opened the Second Niger Bridge for use to ease traffic in the South-East during the festive season.

The Second Niger Bridge was first proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria.

Patterned after the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, the 1.6 kilometres long bridge linking Anambra and Delta states is to decongest traffic on the existing Niger Bridge, boost economic activities, and connect the South-East with the rest of the country.

Efforts to reach the ministry spokesperson, Blessing Adams-Lere, for official confirmation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the National Assembly seeking an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act to allow the Federal Government to source N500 billion for palliative to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

The letter was read on the floor of the House during Wednesday’s plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

The letter stated that the money would be sourced from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of N819.5 billion.

The letter reads in part: “I write to request the approval of the House of Representatives an amendment of the 2022 appropriation act in accordance with the law. The request has become necessary in other to source for funds to provide necessary palliatives to cushion the effect of the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

“The sum of N500 billion only has been extracted from the 2022 appropriation act of N819.536 for the provision of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. I expect that the House will speedily consider the request.”

Responding to the President’s letter, Speaker Abbas assured that the House would deliberate on the matter during Thursday’s plenary session and encouraged members to come prepared to contribute to the discussion.

The request for N500 billion in palliatives comes amid growing public anger over the recent removal of fuel subsidy. The removal of the subsidy has led to an increase in the price of petrol.

However, the government has defended itself, saying removing the subsidy is necessary to save money and attract investment.

Education / 2days To Exams - Unguided Lecturers Behavior by Princeyema: 10:04am On Sep 30, 2021
In academics, procedures or methodologies are produced to guide each academic calendar so as to achieve a set goal(s) or objectives, and most academic calendars runs between 3 - 4 months per semester.

Part of the responsibilities of the university governing council should ensure exam questions are submitted for scrutiny, months before it is taken. This act will reduce some unprecedented questions geared towards suffering innocent students cognitively for a period of 3 hours or less.

It is sad to see students attend classes forcefully fixed by lecturer(s) few days to exams as a result of their inability to cover course outline within a given time frame and will enshrine most of these topics rushly covered in this short period to the exams.

Why should students attend fixed classes even on Saturdays and Sundays as to cover course outline whereas exams is on Monday?

What you can't achieve in 3 - 4 months, will never be achieved in 2 - 4 hours.

It is hard already to reproduce what was learnt in 3 months or more within 1-3 hours.

End fixing of classes few days to exams!

Cover your course outline with stipulated time and allow students to prepare for exams.

Make teaching/learning process, learner oriented!
