Workers in the Nigerian Universities, on Sunday, declared a nationwide protest starting from Thursday July 18, 2024, over their 4 months withheld salaries.

The workers, under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, said their meeting with the government officials have collapsed.

The two unions operating under the auspices of Joint Action Committee (JAC) disclosed this in a circular jointly signed by the General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, and President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim.

Foreign Affairs / Congress Faces September Deadline To Fund The Government—what To Know by pstube: 5:25pm On Jul 07
For much of 2023 and early 2024, Congress was focused on one issue: appropriations. Twelve bills to fund all parts of the federal government were supposed to be passed by Sept. 30, 2023. Yet Congress missed that deadline and three subsequent extensions to pass the bills. To avoid a government shutdown, it instead passed continuing resolutions (CRs) to temporarily fund the government and give itself more time to act.
These CRs attracted intense criticism, and the first CR prompted the House of Representatives to remove its speaker, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), from office. The process was eventually completed on March 23, nearly six months later than required.
It appears that Congress may repeat itself this year, observers say.
12 Bills to Pass
For the work week beginning July 8, the House will likely take up the fifth of 12 spending bills for the 2025 fiscal year beginning on Sept. 30. The bill concerns the legislative branch, which involves funding Congress itself.

As of July 6, the House had passed four appropriations bills for the next fiscal year, which fund the Department of Defense, State Department, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Veterans Affairs. House Speaker Mike Johnson, shortly before taking office last October, promised to complete the passage of all 12 appropriations bills by the end of July and vowed that he would not let the House break for its August recess otherwise.
Regardless, the House’s bills are unlikely to be passed in their present form, given that they include many provisions opposed by congressional Democrats, who control the Senate. The White House has also warned that President Joe Biden ...........

Politics / President Joe Biden And Former President Donald Trump Faced Each Other In A Hist by pstube: 12:31pm On Jun 30
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced each other in a historic debate on Thursday night.

It was the first time in history that a sitting US president faced a former president in a debate. It was also the first debate since 2020 featuring either Biden, who did not face a serious challenge for the Democratic nomination, or Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee who skipped all the GOP debates during primary season.

The roughly 90-minute debate took place at CNN's studios in Atlanta, and it was moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. There wasn't an audience — an anomaly in debates between presidential candidates.

This was also the earliest presidential debate in US history. Debates between general election candidates have always started in September or early October.
