Health / Re: Kenyan Doctors Separate Conjoined Twins: First In Africa by Qoraxeey: 1:27pm On Nov 03, 2016
Just to clarify a certain misinformation, it's not the first surgery on Cjoined twins. That's been done even in Kenya before. Joint heads, joint bellies and so on. These two were joined at the spine.

Perhaps the doctors her can tell us what that meant

Sixty Kenyatta National Hospital specialists have successfully separated Siamese twins born two years ago, in a 23-hour operation that was the first in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa.

The sarcophagus twins born at a Meru hospital were joined at the sacral region of the lower spine.

Head of pediatric surgery Fred Kabuni said on Wednesday that the main aim of the procedure was to separate the babies, close their wounds and create stomachs for them.

He said they will undergo four more reconstructive surgeries after their wounds heal.

"I am very proud of my team. The journey had been long but successful," he said. "The twins will be checked after one month."

Kabuni said they waited two years to perform the surgery to allow the development of key organs, and muscle strong enough for surgery.

The twins are recovering at the hospital's intensive care unit.

Among those involved in the surgery were plastic surgeons, anaesthetists, neurosurgeons and nurses.

They said they will reconstruct the children's skins, Instruments, anal canal and bowel in subsequent operations.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated the joint medical team that conducted a 23-hour surgery and successfully separated conjoined twins, aged two years.

The team comprised medical professionals from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and the University of Nairobi’s School of Health Sciences.

The surgery is one of the continent's first, and given that it was conducted at KNH'S main theatre, it is testimony to the vast improvement in the quality and capacity of Kenya's public hospitals.

QUICK RECOVERY

The President on Thursday also wished the twin girls a quick recovery and all the best as they embark on life after the surgery.

He thanked the medical team for their outstanding work, dedication and a great sense of civic duty.

The joy of the mother, relatives and family friends of the girls is shared by the whole nation and beyond, he said.

The twins can now talk and respond to their mother, Nairobi News reports.

The hospital’s acting CEO Thomas Mutie on Wednesday said the children had been admitted at the Specialised Surgical Paediatric Ward for more than two years to allow development of key organs and also enable them to gain appropriate muscles to withstand the surgery.

PATIENTS STABLE

“Surgery of this nature usually required planning and regular consultation by a multi-disciplinary team of KNH and School of Health Sciences, UoN specialists to exchange ideas on how best to perform the procedure while minimizing the risk of either paralysis or neural damage,” said Dr Mutie.

He added that the children were stable and are receiving specialised care as medics monitor their progress.

“We are confident that they will fully recover and live normal independent lives to adulthood,” said Dr Mutie.

Dr Mutie thanked the team for conducting what he called the “first ever sarcophagus surgery in Africa” with great dedication.

Overview

Emmanuel Lovembe pleaded guilty to the charges before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo.

The West African was deported from the country in 2013 following a presidential order declaring him and Anthony Chinedu illegal immigrants.

In mitigation, Lovembe pleaded for leniency and urged the court to deport him to his motherland saying he is a father of two and the sole breadwinner.

But the magistrate rejected his prayer saying the offence he was facing is serious considering the current security situation in the country.

“The accused has proved that he does not respect the rule of law,” he ruled.

Lovembe was arrested in Kayole on September 29, 2016 after sneaking back into the country.

A Nigerian national who had been declared a prohibited immigrant and deported has been jailed for three years.

Emmanuel Inobemhe had been sent back to his country in June this year but sneaked back into Kenya on September 20.

He was investigated by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit for terrorism connections.

On Friday, Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo said the offence committed by the Nigerian is serious and touches on the security of the country.

The magistrate sentenced him to serve three years in prison for defying an order from Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

Mr Inobemhe is also facing a charge of drug trafficking, which is listed for a hearing on November 8.

Are you guyz the humble receptive subjects of African musical stardom?

Unlike many west Africans (whom I've come to notice are too obsessed with being light-skinned), East Africans are usually quick to appreciate everything African. Apart From Kwame Nkurumah and Sedar Sengor, there is actually no Pan-africanist of repute from the west.

Perhaps you should start by listening to this accapella by Sauti Sol and High School students from where he studied and then you'll start appreciating that there is music outside Lagos.

Family / Re: My Wife Is Too Proud To Apologise by Qoraxeey: 5:53am On Oct 07, 2016
mrk74:
I do feel that I’m a very lucky man to have a very compatible lady as my wife. We love each other so well and I strongly believe we were meant for each other. However, I have one issue. When she has issue with a suggestion, request or complain she may agree without stating or discussing her objections but will simply not take the suggestion. Sometimes she will out rightly disobey me. The result will be me complaining severally and eventually getting upset. We hardly have issues, but when we do it’s usually because of something like this. We had dated for about 3 years before marriage. We had no issue in our 1st two years. Not that there was no complain at all but we easily made adjustments to accommodate each other. But there were several instances of this kind of issues in our 3rd year and I was seriously bothered. We had a very serious misunderstanding still from this kind of issue few months before we got married. At a point I asked her if I’m difficult and she told me that I nag. It was very embarrassing but when I the dictionary definition of nagging again which states that “(of a person) constantly harassing someone to do something”, then I agreed that I did nag. Then I realized how easy a partner’s action/inaction could make the other to nag.

Just before we began the process towards marriage I had to extract commitments from her for us to avoid this kind of issues in the future. I had explained how we could have handled situations like this better and the fact that she shouldn’t make it a big deal to apologise and she agreed with me. We got married on 30th December 2015 and we have not had issues since then till few days ago. I told her to stop using an item for cooking due to the health challenge I have with the item when it much in the food. I had previously asked for her to avoid putting too much of it which she agreed but she will fail on about 2 out of 9 meals. It was when I realized she can’t moderate it appropriately I asked her to stop and add it when she eats. She agreed but still won’t stop. I then told her not to have the item in the house at all. She agreed but will still buy it and hide. Even though I had noticed the presence of the item on meals for a while but I got to find some that she had recently bought and hidden in a locker. When I confronted her on it she only argued and asked if I had noticed it being overused recently. Even when I pointed out how bad I felt about her disobeying me she will not see it as a big deal.

I’ve been cold with her for about 2 days now (We talk, but not with the typical high spirit when we are both happy). Yesterday she told me that I have been behaving abnormally and I have not told her what is wrong. Then I used the opportunity to remind her of how she has been disobeying me including that of another incident that I had just refused to be upset about. All she said was that she had agreed to stop which I’m not sure I remembered her saying so. But even if she did, how is it different from the previous instance she accepted but began to hide the item. I believe she should apologize for disobeying me but this is something that she won’t do. As far as she is concerned, she had told me she will stop and expects us to move on and there is nothing to be addressed any further.

Fellow nairalanders, what do you think about this? Is an apology for disobeying me out of place?

We had agreed before marriage not to take our issues to friends or family which I strongly uphold. But at this point, I think we should get opinion of a 3rd party hopefully we can get an objective view on this and either of us can have make necessary adjustment for us to avoid this in the future. She reads selected items that lalasticlala pushes to the front page and I hope she gets to read this too. She will definitely know it’s about us. If I don’t hear her mention seeing it on nairaland, I will deliberately lead her to the thread.

----Modified----
I notice some comments are being directed on the food incidence as if that really is the issue. Please the issue has not always been about food. It's just these last issues that have been about food. There had been an issue with her using bleaching creams, one about her refusing to apply for a sponsorship of her project by an International organization which I pushed for mainly because of the exposure she could get. There had been one about applying for her MSc in a nearby University. Except for the bleaching that she just didn't seem to believe the level of risk involved with the bleaching creams the others she simply won't express her reservation or make objections but just won't act till it becomes annoying then you will know she was not comfortable with it. Meanwhile she had given the impression that she is act or was acting on it. Till date she still regrets where she is having her about to be concluded MSc which could have been avoided if she had opened up on time about her reservation on where I had initially suggested.

The issue is actually more about her not expressing her reservation on a matter and not apologizing when she realizes that she didn't do well. Instead of showing remorse she will simply say we should move on sometimes without even wanting to address the issue.

For those who think I'm controlling. I do let her make her decisions. But I do wish she can share her objections where I make suggestions that she is not comfortable with. When I asked her to get registered for her MSc I had asked her to do so in the Federal University that is about 3mins drive from our house. But that is where she had a BSc and she was not comfortable going there for her MSc. But instead of opening up on her reservation she was just lazy about getting the form and was making enquiry about it from wrong sources till I lost my patience and insisted she go by herself. The school is very close but she didn't even need to trek down. When she got there it was already late entry but I didn't mind. It was when she should have gone to pay that she now raised her reservation but initially hanged it on someone else opinion. I didn't insist. I even tried to assisted her in finding an alternative. But by this time it was only one school that still sold forms for MSc and that is where she is schooling now.

I have quoted you so that you can read my post. I rarely post on Nairaland but i thought i should do it for you; you know what your problem is? You are suffering from the "Nice Guy Syndrome." It Opened my eyes when i knew that i too had the same syndrome. Many men nowdays have it. It makes you nagging and passive aggressive - you start acting like a woman. I won't say more, get yourself a copy of the book "No more Mr. Nice guy" If you don't have money to buy, just google for the pdf and you'll get it.

According to Kenyan Standard newspaper, there was drama at Kipkorgot Estate in the outskirts of Eldoret after secondary school students were caught having group sex. The four boys and one lady from different schools in Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties, have been living together in a rented room since schools opened for the second term. Kapsoya Assistant Chief, Fiona Bartocho, confirmed the incident and said that they raided the room where the randy students had rented and found them having sex. You should be ashamed that Chad is sending its troops to die in your country. You want them to hop around in your country? You must be very naive to think that you can hop in such as situation - for you can easily find yourself surrounded in a country where no one will come to rescue you

Travel / Re: Why I Want To Visit Nigeria - A Foreigner's (Flimsy) Reasons. by Qoraxeey: 12:15pm On Feb 20, 2015
AlpineSnow:
As a Non-Nigerian African, I've always been fascinated by Nigeria (And no, not because of Nollywood, I'm not a fan of Nollywood). Here are the reasons why I want to visit Nigeria.

1. To Try Jollof Rice
I once read this book by Chinua Achebe where one of the characters really liked Jollof rice. And it sounded tasty. So I really want to visit nigeria and try it straight from the source. grin

2. To Visit Kano.
Back when I was in class seven (7th grade obviously) we learnt about Climates in different parts of Africa. Kano (Northern Nigeria) was one of the area whose climates we studied. We looked at some pictures from that area, and the mud roofed houses (adobe houses?) looked really nice. So I'd like to visit that place.

3. To Visit the University of Ibadan.
It's probably the most well known Nigerian University outside of Nigeria. And a lot of smart Nigerians e.g Soyinka went there. Plus when I was a kid, I used to read this African encyclopedia for teenagers, and most of the contributing authors were from there (the others were from the university of Nairobi).

4. To Try Bitter Leaf and Egusi.
I don't even know what this is, but it sounds delicious. Again I learnt about this while reading Achebe. grin

5. To Visit Enugu.
I read "The Nigerian Civil War" by John de st Jorre. And Enugu was the capital of Biafra at the beginning. So I'm just interested in visiting because I read so much about it.

6. To Visit the Confluence of The Niger and The Benue.
And to travel by boat for a short distance down The Niger. Hopefully I won't end up like Mungo Park.

7. Visit Port Harcourt.
I just like the name of the city. That's all.

8. Visit the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Why? Because some smart Nigerians e,g Chris Okigbo have ties to this university. (Side Note: Chris Okigbo's grandson and I attended the same university. And boy, could he sing! His group competed in one of those American singing shows and did very well)

Hahaha..which year were you in class seven? Was in class seven in 1995 when we did GHC, and i can never forget my GHC teacher. Kenya nd The Rest of Africa. He would come to class and narrate his "voyages." How he went through the grassland savanna, the Equatorial climate, the Kalahari desert and what he saw.

He would start the class with "When i was in Zambia, I met Kenneth Kaunda." And the we would cruise through Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Steve Biko of South Africa, Joshua Nkomo of Zimbabwe, Kwame Nkuruma of Ghana, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, and Haile Sellasie of Ethiopia. For some reason, we never studied Nigeria Leaders or South Africa's Mandela or Mugabe. Though I remember studying the Hausa and the Fulani. Wow....that was a long time.

Many times when you are in church, you find people who do not want to dance or clap or even sing. In this Congolese church, the people are happy. I was speaking to a few Congolese children in my church, and they tell me all their services are like this.

When was the last time your church was this joyful?

Okay, i need some help. I'm teaching a Sunday school class on Sunday, and I need some help from Nigerians. I'm Kenyan. I think some of you know this song - "Loving Jesus, loving Jesus, loving Jesus what a wonder you are, I love you so, so, so, much loving Jesus," and then they say Oshee, oshee oohh, oshe oohhh, oshe bam-bam-bam. A fellow SS teacher told me the words are Nigerian and it's actually Oshe ba-ba. I want to teach children to stop singing songs without understanding the meaning.

This song is usually sung by children.

Does anyone know this song?

What tribe are those words?

I do not want them to be like some Muslim kids i know who normally recite words that they do not understand.

With Love
