Nairaland / General / PDP Thugs Storm Ekiti Court Over Fayose. by ralphcrown3: 9:57am On Sep 23, 2014
About 100 hoodlums on Monday disrupted proceedings at an Ado Ekiti High Court after a judge decided to hear the substantive suit challenging the eligibility of Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, to contest the June 21 election.
The Punch reported that the invasion took place shortly after the judge, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi, refused an application to set aside an order abridging the time for the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate to file his defence in the case filed on behalf of socio-political group, Ekiti-11 by a member, Mr. Femi Ajakaiye.
The judge had adjourned sitting till 12 noon to prepare a ruling in a similar matter filed by the Citizen Popular Party before trouble started.

As he was preparing to return for the continuation of the matter, angry youths besieged the court. The judge was smuggled out of the chambers through the back door to avoid being lynched by the aggressors.
Judges, lawyers and others in court, including journalists, ran for their lives as the protesters went berserk and went after perceived opponents of the PDP.
It could not be confirmed if the police made any arrest.
The hoodlums said they were aggrieved about the perceived partiality of the judge handling the case.
In the ensuing melee, the Chairman of Ado West Local Council Development Authority, Mr. Sunday Ibitoye, and Ajakaye, were attacked.
The hoodlums had earlier engaged in an argument with security officials in the court room for preventing some of them from entering the court while allowing others in.
The rampaging youths, who called the trial judge all sorts of unprintable names, alleged that he was partial in handling the matter for showing interest beyond official reasons.
The judge, who had assumed jurisdiction in the case had ruled that he could not reverse his decision to abridge the time as the court had become “functus officio” having taken a decision on the issue.
Contrary to the argument by the PDP, the court said the decision to abridge the time did not contravene Section 32 of the 1999 Constitution.
Justice Ogunyemi said the PDP and Fayose failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the reasons why the court could not hear the substantive suit.
The judge consequently dismissed the PDP’s application, saying the court could not set aside its own ruling of June 6, and that the time frame had been overtaken by events, which he maintained had rendered the whole exercise a mere academic exercise.

Nairaland / General / Taraba State Governor, Danbaba Suntai And His Deputyset For Impeachment. by ralphcrown3: 9:35am On Sep 23, 2014
Taraba state governor, Danbaba Suntai and his deputy who is the acting governor of the state, Garba Umar could both be impeached if the plans of a ‘cabal’ in the state is successful.
According to the acting governor of the state, Umar, the cabal is trying to engineer the impeachment of both of them if the medical panel set up by the State House of Assembly finds that the governor is unfit to resume office.
Umar said in an interview aired on Monday that the plan is for both of them to be removed so that the unnamed ‘cabal’ will seize power illegally.

Speaking on BBC Hausa radio Umar blasted those he called part of a cabal that wanted to seize power illegally in Taraba. He said there was no fight between him and the governor but that some associates were trying to create problems because of their own selfish reasons.
“Since they are saying my boss and I be impeached, it means they are not with him. They are lying; they just want to seize power illegally and there is no law that permits doing that in this country. The constitution must be abided by.
“And I don’t even know what offence I committed that would warrant my impeachment.”
Umar then alleged that the State Executive Council asked that a medical panel ascertain the governor’s state of health because of persistent claims by associates that the governor was fit enough.
“The issue of removal depends on the outcome of the medical panel. We just want to know the truth of his health status. Even me I don’t get to see him. I only see his photos just like you do in photographs and on television.”
Umar then denied the rumour that he had plans to replace his boss as governor on a permanent basis. “It is 22 months now that I have been acting as the governor and all along, I have never thought of anything like impeachment. But some people have continued to cause panic.
“I have been obedient to my boss, yet people will always say he is coming back to take over power. That is why we are trying to ascertain his health condition and then inform the world. Any time he comes and calls me to ask me to give back power to him, I will do that,” he stated.
Umar then said he has only been allowed to see Suntai once in 10 months, explaining that his recent efforts to receive the governor when he arrived Abuja airport last week was also halted.
“When the governor was returning, I had the information and I went to welcome him. But they told me he was going to land at the old wing of the airport, after keeping people at both wings in a clear deceit. I went there and waited, only for me to be told later he had since landed at the other wing. Before I could rush to the tarmac, he was put into a car and driven away immediately,” he said.
It would be recalled that Suntai returned to Nigeria last week, after two months and two weeks in the United Kingdom for further treatment on injuries he sustained during in a plane crash in October 2012. The governor had earlier spent 10 months in hospitals in Germany and the United States.
His associates say he is fit to take charge from Umar, who was made acting governor three weeks after the air crash near Yola.
But the State House of Assembly has now set up a medical panel to determine Suntai’s health status. Based on constitutional provisions, the governor would have to be removed if the panel determines that he is not fit to discharge his responsibilities.
A spokesman for Speaker Josiah Kente, Tanko Kaura, said he was not aware of a move by the House to impeach the acting governor. He added that this was a mere rumour.
If both Umar and Suntai are removed at the same time, the constitution provides that the speaker will take over as acting governor and a bye-election be conducted within 90 days.

Nairaland / General / U.S. Senate Offer $10m Reward For Tips Leading To The Capture Of James Killers. by ralphcrown3: 1:37pm On Sep 22, 2014
A $10million reward may soon be offered by the American government as a way to get tips on the recent highly-publicized deaths of James Foley and Steven Sotloff.
Agence France Presse reported on the development, saying the hefty sum was 'unanimously approved [in] a bill' by the Senate on Friday.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said 'One way we can honor the memories of James Foley and Steven Sotloff is to bring their evil murderers to justice, which this measure will help do,' according to the news service.
AFP reported that Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said 'Our country lost two of its own, and we must do everything possible to bring the terrorists who committed these atrocities to justice.'

The news service pointed out that the bill has yet to be approved by the House of Representatives.
The developments took place on the same day President Barack Obama signed into law legislation authorizing the military to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels fighting Islamic State militants in the Middle East.
A $10million reward may soon be offered by the American government as a way to get tips on the recent highly-publicized deaths of James Foley (pictured) and Steven Sotloff Support: Sen. Marco Rubio (pictured) said of the bill 'One way we can honor the memories of James Foley and Steven Sotloff is to bring their evil murderers to justice, which this measure will help do'
Obama acted a day after a Senate vote capped congressional action on the request, which passed by wide margins despite reservation about whether his strategy will do enough to stop the surging terrorist group, which has seized large swaths of Iraq and Syria. Congress will revisit the issue after the midterm elections.
Thursday's bipartisan 78-22 tally Thursday blended support from Obama's close Democratic allies and some of his fiercest GOP critics, including top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. It put leading contenders for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination on opposite sides. Some of Obama's liberal allies defected.
The legislation also provides funding for the government after the end of the budget year on Sept. 30, eliminating any threat of a shutdown in the run-up to November elections that will seat a new House and decide control of the Senate. The House approved the bill on Wednesday.
Obama said Thursday that the support from both Republicans and Democrats 'shows the world that Americans are united' in combating the Islamic State group. He said the militants thought they could frighten or intimidate Americans, but the Senate vote had showed them they were wrong.
'As Americans, we do not give in to fear,' Obama said. 'We pull together. We stand together.'
U.S. troops would train Syrian rebels at camps in Saudi Arabia, though the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, said it could take a year before they would return to the battlefield in Syria. The arm-and-train authority only extends into December, and lawmakers are to revisit the issue in a postelection, lame-duck session. Thursday's bipartisan 78-22 tally Thursday blended support from Obama's close Democratic allies and some of his fiercest GOP critics. ISIS militants are allegedly seen in this file photograph
Supporters of the proposal agreed that more has to be done to combat Islamic State extremists who are on the move in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. estimates the extremists can muster 20,000 to 31,500 fighters across Syria and Iraq, with two-thirds of them in Syria and the rest in Iraq. Terrorism experts say they are better organized and more dangerous than al-Qaida, which is lending urgency to the effort.
But opponents of Obama's strategy say it would hand weapons to shadowy groups that could prove untrustworthy and whose top priority is to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad.
'Intervention when both choices are bad is a mistake. Intervention when both sides are evil is a mistake. Intervention that destabilizes the Middle East is a mistake,' said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who is considering a run for the White House in 2016. 'And yet, here we are again, wading into a civil war.'
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who's also weighing a presidential run, joined Paul in opposition, while Sen. Rubio, also a potential candidate, supported the president's request.
'We will confront ISIL one way or the other, and I believe the sooner the better,' Rubio said, using an alternate acronym for the group. 'What we are asked to do now is approve funding to arm moderate rebel elements in Syria. There is no guarantee of success. There is none. But there is a guarantee of failure if we do not even try.'
Liberal opponents included rising Democratic star Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
'Not only are countries in the region not stepping up in the fight ... but believe it or not several of these Gulf states are empowering' Islamic State forces as well as al-Qaida allied groups with financial contributions, Sanders said.
Some strong opponents of the war in Iraq swung behind the president, alarmed by the Islamic State threat.
'I am so cautious when it comes to voting to go to war,' said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. 'In this case, if I were to sit back and say I'm too afraid, I'm too nervous, that is exactly the wrong signal to send.'
More hawkish lawmakers said Obama's strategy won't be enough to blunt the advance of Islamic State forces. Obama has ordered U.S. airstrikes as well but is adamant that he won't send combat troops to battle the Islamic extremists.
Top administration officials again fanned out across Capitol Hill on Thursday to sell the president's strategy, with Secretary of State John Kerry pushing back on an argument by some that Syria's rebels lack moderates, or at least any with the capacity to make a difference in the war. He told the House Foreign Affairs Committee about several opposition groups, each comprising up to 4,000 fighters, which have battled Islamic State militants and other extremists over the past year.
Kerry said the coalition that will fight the Islamic State group counts 50 countries. He said countries in Europe, the Arab world and elsewhere had committed to taking part militarily, without specifying any by name.
Some senators opposed arming the Syrian rebels but voted for the measure anyway to avoid a government shutdown. Others, including Rubio, supported it despite opposing the underlying spending measure.

Nairaland / General / APC Warns Against Plan To Postpone 2015 Elections. by ralphcrown3: 9:00am On Sep 22, 2014
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned those nursing the plan to postpone the 2015 general elections to perish the thought, saying Nigerians will not accept, under any guise whatsoever, any scheme by desperate elected officials to get tenure elongation by subterfuge.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said those who are flying the kite of pushing forward the elections ostensibly because the nation is at war are trying to imperil the nation’s democracy.
“Election is the lifeblood of democracy, the mechanism by which modern representative democracy operates. It is the only way for the citizenry to renew and refresh the governing process so they can get the most benefits out of democracy. Therefore, anyone that tries to sabotage this mechanism is aiming a dagger straight at the heart of democracy,” it said.
APC said the statement credited to Senate President David Mark, that “there is no question of elections, it is not even on the table now. We are in a state of war,” reflects the thinking in government circles, even though the Senate President, having run into a wall of opposition over his unfortunate statement, has tried to step back from the comments.
Senate President, David Mark
Senate President, David Mark
“We in the APC saw this coming, and we have said it at several fora: That the Jonathan administration has deliberately allowed the insurgency in the North-east, an opposition stronghold, to fester so he can cash in on it to get re-elected. Simply put, the administration has been playing dirty politics with Boko Haram, at the expense of the lives and property of the citizenry and the well-being of the nation.
“However, the administration is being too clever by half to think that Nigerians will reward it for its failure in its main reason for existence, which is the protection of the welfare and security of the citizens. There is just no way this government will be allowed to profit from its ineptness and its conspiracy to prolong an insurgency that should have ended a long time ago,” the party said.
It said the statement by INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega, that the commission has started preparing for elections even in the North-east, represents a ray of hope, but warned the electoral body to remain steadfast and not to cave in to what will be massive pressure from the Jonathan administration and its gong beaters to scuttle the 2015 elections.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Baby Cleared Of Ebola Suspicion In Australia. by ralphcrown3: 12:42pm On Sep 21, 2014
A Nigerian child who was suspected to have been infected with Ebola has been cleared of the illness in a Melbourne hospital on Sunday.
The one-year old Nigerian baby was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital on Friday after presenting symptoms similar to those experienced by Ebola patients.
It was understood that the child had arrived in Australia after being in Nigeria, where there had been some known cases of infection.

According to Mail Online, paramedics donning full protective suits transferred the baby to an isolation room according to the Herald Sun.
The Ebola scare would have been the first real test of Victoria’s Ebola Virus Disease Response Plan which was rolled out across metropolitan and regional health services following a scare in Brisbane earlier this month.
The Nigerian baby incident is the second scare involving Ebola on Australian shores this month.
It comes shortly after a Brisbane man was feared to have been infected with the disease following his return from a trip to the Congo in August.

Nairaland / General / Ghana Youths Selling Their Blood For Money. by ralphcrown3: 12:19pm On Sep 21, 2014
To Ghana’s legions of jobless young men, Eric Bimpong has a money-making proposition: sell your blood.
Bimpong spends his days outside schools, bars and on the streets of poor neighbourhoods in Accra, scouring for teenagers and 20-somethings to give blood outside the capital’s largest hospital.
Commercial blood donors, as the authorities call them, fill a void in a country where blood is often in short supply and cultural and religious beliefs keep some from donating.
When a patient needs blood and the blood banks are empty and family and friends unavailable or unwilling to donate, the paid donors step in for a price.

“In this country, when people go to the hospital, they don’t want their relatives to know,” to hide certain illnesses, Bimpong said. “So they come to us.”
While their donations likely save the lives of bleeding patients, public health officials worry that the donors spread diseases like HIV or hepatitis to those who receive their blood.
“It’s abnormal. We don’t really encourage this kind of donation,” said Stephen Addai, a spokesman for Ghana’s National Blood Service. (NBS)
“Sometimes they don’t even know their blood group.”
Ghana has prospered in recent years off exports of gold, cocoa and oil as well as the country’s reputation as a rare stable democracy in tumultuous West Africa.
While its economy has recently begun slowing down, Ghana’s government is investing heavily in building new hospitals and renewing old facilities.
But keeping blood banks stocked remains a constant struggle, Addai said.

The NBS usually relies on students to donate the approximately 250 units per-day of blood used in the southern third of the country, which includes the capital.
But they still run short, particularly when students go on holiday, Addai said.
The NBS has sounded the alarm about blood shortages repeatedly on radio stations and in newspapers, encouraging people to come out and donate.
During a recent blood donor drive at a shopping mall in Accra, the NBS hoped to get 1,500 donors, Addai said. Instead, they got just five.
“They are afraid of the syringe,” Addai said. “They are not aware of the importance of it because of certain beliefs. They’ve heard stories of certain diseases.”
Chronic blood shortages have forced hospital blood centres to improvise.
When a patient arrives in need of blood and a hospital has none to offer, nearby clinics are contacted to see if they might have some available, Addai said.
If the clinics don’t, family members are called to come and donate. Friends will suffice, too — if they’re willing.
If that fails, “it means that the victim will not survive”, Addai said.
More than 42 percent of Ghana’s unemployed are aged 15 to 24 and just under a quarter of the population of 26 million live below the poverty line of 3.60 cedi ($1, 0.77 euros per day).
Inside the packed waiting room of the blood centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, signs encourage people to donate every four months.
When a face becomes too familiar, it’s likely that person is a commercial donor, said Victoria Atiapah, a nurse at the centre.
“When you see them the first time, they say they’re relatives. But when they come the second time, third time, then you know,” Atiapah said.

Nairaland / General / The Moment A GIGANTIC ANACONDA Is Pulled Out Of The Water. by ralphcrown3: 12:05pm On Sep 20, 2014
A huge Brazilian anaconda was captured in jaw-dropping video while a trio
of fishermen pulled it out of the river water — nearly getting the animal
stressed to the point of rearing its enormous head and swallowing them all.
The group Sirlei Oliveira, husband Betinho Borges and friend Rodrigo Santos
were boating down the Santa Maria river, in the southwestern state of Mato
Grosso do Sul, when they came across the huge snake, reported O News
reported The serpent, estimated to be at least 17 feet, is seen moving away
from the tiny boat, its belly appearing full of what must have been a massive
lunch not long earlier.

Then Borges begins to prod the anaconda with a
wooden oar as the snake attempts to get away from him.
The snake thrashes around trying to get away from the man
The snake thrashes around trying to get away from the man
'Leave it! Oh my god!' yells a hysterical Oliveira in Portuguese as her husband
continues to torment the yellow anaconda.
The snake gets away momentarily, swimming away from the group for a few
seconds before the boat turns around and continues to chase it.
'Grab it, dude, grab it!' instigate Borges as his buddy Santos tries to catch the
snake by its tail.
Then Borges gets over to the boat control — and brazenly begins to take off
as Santos holds on to the snake, pulling the huge animal as it thrashes around
trying to get away.
Santos eventually lets go of the snake and it swims away to freedom.
Environmental police in Mato Grosso do Sul have fined each torturer the
equivalent of $600.
They have also been charged with a crime and face up to a year and a half
in jail if they're convicted under an environmental law that proscribes the
chasing or hunting of wildlife without a license, according to O Correio.

Nairaland / General / Synagogue: Forensic Test Needed To Identify Victims – NEMA. by ralphcrown3: 9:09am On Sep 20, 2014
Charles Otegbade, Director, Search and Rescue, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said proper forensic test was needed to identify the victims of the collapsed Synagogue church building.
Otegbade told newsmen on Friday at the site of the collapsed building that the death toll presently stood at 86 and while 131 were still in the hospital.
He said that he was there to extend a warm hand of fellowship to the church on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Otegbade said that NEMA’s mandate was to bring succour to people in distress, not just to coordinate rescue efforts.
“Experts from Nigeria are working with experts from South Africa, to help in identifying the victims of the collapsed building.
“The collapsed building that was used as guest house was mostly occupied by South Africans,” he said.
One of the survivors, Temitayo Taiwo, 28, a graduate from the University of West London, South Africa, who works as a business coordinator for the church said he was grateful to God and to the church that he survived.
“We were in the rubble for more than 24 hours, everywhere was dark, after this incident I appreciate God the more and I am very grateful to God that I survived,” he said.

Nairaland / General / I’m A Lion That Tames Leopards, Boasts Joseph Mbu. by ralphcrown3: 9:36am On Sep 16, 2014
Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu has described himself as a lion, who tames every leopard that crosses his way.
“It is only lion that can tame leopard. Each time the leopard remembers my face, it makes noise, but if it knows I am around, it cannot make noise. A lion is a lion,” he boasted at an event in Abuja today.
Mbu, who earned national notoriety as the commissioner of police in Rivers State, by blatantly harassing and disrespecting Governor Rotimi Amaechi did not indicate whether Amaechi was the lion that he tamed while in the state.
Mbu also acted as commissioner in the Nigerian capital of Abuja and also entered the black book of human rights groups, when he unilaterally banned processions organised by the movement to #bringbackourgirls. The ban exploded in his face as he was overruled by the former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.
Despite his indiscretions and misdemeanour, he was promoted last month as Assistant Inspector General, further bolstering the notion that he has connections to Aso Rock and can do no wrong.

Mbu stirred the new dust about his lionised image when he formally handed over to his successor in Abuja.
He urged the new man, Mr Wilson Inalegu, to be firm and to sustain the current low crime rate in the territory.
Mbu, who is now the AIG Zone 7, further advised the incoming commissioner to act like father to the officers and men of the FCT command but should not exhibit sentiments.
“You are the father of the command. Do not apply sentiments when doing police work because when you do that, you will fail,” he said.
According to him, what the force need is a strong leader who leads by example.
He said that discipline among the personnel should be taken seriously.
Responding, Inalegu pledged to sustain the standard set by Mbu, but stressed that the command would be civil in dealing with the public.
Inalegu said that it was necessary to keep to best practices as the FCT was the convergence centre for Nigerians and foreigners alike.

Nairaland / General / 12 Nigerian Soldiers Sentenced To Death For Mutiny. by ralphcrown3: 9:24am On Sep 16, 2014
Twelve Nigerian soldiers were on Tuesday sentenced to death for mutiny after shots were fired at their commanding officer in the restive northeast city of Maiduguri earlier this year.
A nine-member military tribunal, sitting in Abuja, convicted the soldiers following the incident on May 14 when shots were fired at the commanding officer of the Nigerian Army’s 7th Division, which is tasked with fighting Boko Haram insurgents.
Court president Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo said the sentences were subject to confirmation by Nigeria’s military authorities but added there was no doubt about the gravity of the offence.
The panel considered “its likely effect on the counter-insurgency operations in the northeast as well as its implications on national security”, he told the court.
Nigeria’s army has been under pressure to end the bloody five-year insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives, made tens of thousands of others homeless and seen the militants make territorial gains in the northeast in recent weeks.
Front-line troops have frequently complained of a lack of adequate weapons and equipment to fight the rebels.
Residents in towns raided by the Islamists have said the insurgents are often armed with rocket-propelled grenades and anti-aircraft weapons mounted on trucks and, in some cases, armoured personnel carriers.
Soldiers by contrast have at times reportedly lacked ammunition and been sent out to the bush to fight without basic communication equipment.
Last month, dozens of Nigerian soldiers refused to deploy for an offensive to try to retake the captured Borno town of Gwoza, which the Islamists claimed as part of an Islamic caliphate.
Soldiers’ wives also demonstrated at the gate of a military base in Maiduguri trying to stop their husbands from heading to Gwoza without proper equipment.
One of the protesting soldiers, who set up camp on the outskirts of Maiduguri, said at the time: “We are being killed like chickens by Boko Haram because we are not given the required weapons to fight. We say enough is enough.”
The country’s military spokesman Chris Olukolade denied the troops had mutinied and told AFP that Nigerian soldiers were “too disciplined and patriotic to indulge in this dangerous offence”.
The military has also rejected claims that hundreds of troops shouldered arms and fled their posts in border towns overrun by Boko Haram.
President Goodluck Jonathan has asked lawmakers to approve a $1 billion (750 million euros) foreign loan to upgrade the capacity of the military, which was seen as a tacit acknowledgement that troops were being out-matched.
The court martial heard that on the day in question, the soldiers from 101 Battalion opened fire at a convoy containing the 7th Division commander General Amadu Mohammed at an army medical centre in Maiduguri.
The soldiers had demanded that Mohammed speak to them after a number of their colleagues were killed in an ambush on the way back from the Borno state town of Chibok.
The previous month, Boko Haram fighters kidnapped more than 200 girls from their school in the town, triggering global outrage.
Witnesses said the soldiers became unruly and threw stones at an officer when he arrived and shots were fired into the air. Mohammed then had to take cover as they trained their guns on him but he was not injured.
“The soldiers succeeded in shooting at his staff car, thereby causing bullet impressions at the right rear door where the GOC (general officer commanding) sat,” Okonkwo told the court.
“He said thank God for the staff officer who rushed him into his car and the fact that the staff car is an armoured plated vehicle.”
Eighteen soldiers in total, ranked from private to corporal, were charged with mutiny, criminal conspiracy, attempted murder, disobeying orders, insubordination and false accusation.
Twelve were sentenced to death for mutiny, one was given 28 days’ hard labour on another count and five were acquitted. All pleaded not guilty.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Football Fans: Lawmaker Decries Massive Interest In Foreign Football. by ralphcrown3: 11:59am On Sep 15, 2014
Otunba Abayomi Ogunusi, the Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Finance, has decried the massive interest of Nigerian footbal fans in foreign league matches.
Ogunusi said the development was impeding the growth of local leagues.
The lawmaker said this while addressing newsmen in Lagos on Sunday on the upcoming finals of the Ogunusi Unity Football Cup for Ifako/Ijaiye and Ojokoro constituency of Lagos State.
He said that the preference of Nigerian football fans for foreign league matches had affected many clubs in the country.

“Many people no longer want to invest in Nigerian home leagues because most Nigerians no longer show interest in local clubs”.

Meantime, the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, while condoling with General Overseer of the church, Prophet Temitope Joshua and members of the church, advised that staff and members of the church, should allow emergency workers could do their work. Fashola gave the advice when he visited the scene, yesterday.
The footage showed that the building, which served as a guest house where people with varying ailments from within and outside the country put up, caved in at exactly 12.44pm. This was shortly after an airplane which was captured while hovering round the church’s premises left.Prophet Joshua popularly called T. B Joshua, yesterday, played a footage of the collapsed building as allegedly captured by the Church’s Close Circuit Television, CCTV, camera to his congregation.
Joshua narrated how he left ‘prayer mountain’ where he ‘lives’ to return to the church, only to be alerted by a telephone call, in which the caller told him that a plane was hovering around the church’s premises.
The structure was initially a two-storey building before it was converted to a five-storey edifice.
Those who were trapped under the debris included foreigners, some kitchen staff and construction workers.
Fashola’s directs church members to vacate site
Fashola, during his visit, yesterday, urged Joshua to prevail on members of the church allow government rescue workers a chance to do their job unhindered as they (members) were not trained to manage emergency situations.

Nairaland / General / Tragedy: ISIS Beheads British Aid Worker. by ralphcrown3: 11:39am On Sep 14, 2014
The father of two children went to war-torn Syria to try to help struggling civilians at a refugee camp.
But he ended up a political pawn in the hands of brutal jihadists, becoming the third Western hostage beheaded by ISIS in a matter of weeks.ritish aid worker David Haines?
And once again, the terrorist group is threatening to kill yet another of its high-profile captives.
The gruesome video showing the death of British aid worker David Haines prompted revulsion and condemnation after it was posted Saturday.
"The murder of David Haines is an act of pure evil," British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter.
"We will do everything in our power to hunt down these murderers and ensure they face justice, however long it takes," he vowed.

Britain's top security and intelligence officials will hold an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss the crisis as the life of another British man held by ISIS hangs in the balance.
The video of Haines' death shows a masked ISIS militant placing his hand on another captive, whom he identified as Alan Henning, a British citizen.
'Your evil alliance with America'
The Islamist group, which controls large areas of northern Syria and Iraq, previously publicized grisly videos of the beheadings of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff. It has also brutally slaughtered large numbers of Syrians and Iraqis in the territory it's seized.
In the two previous videos, the killer directed his comments at the United States, which had begun airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq. But the latest one singles out Britain.
"Your evil alliance with America, which continues to strike the Muslims of Iraq and most recently bombed the Haditha Dam, will only accelerate your destruction and claim the role of the obedient lap dog," says the killer, who sounds like the man who murdered Foley and Sotloff.
The United States launched airstrikes on ISIS positions near Haditha Dam in western Iraq a week ago and is working to build a coalition of countries to support its efforts to combat the terrorist group.
"Cameron will only drag you and your people into another bloody and unwinnable war," says the killer, dressed all in black with only his eyes and hands showing. He calls the beheading "a message to the allies of America."
The video is produced very similarly to those that showed the beheadings of Foley and Sotloff.
Like them, Haines appears kneeling beside the executioner in a barren desert landscape, dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit. He had been shown briefly in the earlier video of Sotloff's killing.
Father of two girls
Haines, 44, went to Syria to help organize the delivery of humanitarian aid to a refugee camp in Atmeh, close to the Turkish border. He was abducted near the camp in March 2013.
"David was most alive and enthusiastic in his humanitarian roles," his brother, Mike, said in a statement. "His joy and anticipation for the work he went to do in Syria is for myself and family the most important element of this whole sad affair."
Haines had more than a decade of experience doing aid work, helping victims of conflict in the Balkans, Africa and the Middle East.
He was in Syria as a logistics and security manager for ACTED, a French aid group that was helping provide food, tents and water for tens of thousands of people who had fled to the Atmeh camp amid the vicious civil war.
When he wasn't working in troubled areas, Haines lived in Croatia with his wife Dragana and their 4-year-old daughter.
He grew up in Scotland, and his first marriage was to his childhood sweetheart Louise, according to his brother.
His teenage daughter from that marriage, Bethany, talked about how much she misses her father in comments on a social network, Ask.fm, late last year.
Asked what she wanted at that time, Bethany replied simply, "For my daddy to come home."
U.S. building anti-ISIS coalition
The British government said earlier this month that it had attempted to rescue one of its citizens held by ISIS "some time ago" but had failed. It didn't provide any further details.
U.S. President Barack Obama, who announced last week that U.S. airstrikes would go after ISIS in Syria, condemned "the barbaric murder" of Haines.
"The United States stands shoulder-to-shoulder tonight with our close friend and ally in grief and resolve," he said in a statement late Saturday.
The murderous, meteoric rise of ISIS -- which calls itself the Islamic State -- has caused alarm across the Middle East and beyond.
In his statement, Obama reiterated his intention "to degrade and destroy this threat to the people of our countries, the region and the world."
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has spent recent days in the Middle East trying to build support for the U.S. strategy to combat ISIS.
Those efforts are expected to continue Monday in Paris, where France is hosting an international conference on the crisis in Iraq.

Nairaland / General / Boko Haram: Nigeria’s Military Reports Loss Of Alpha Jet. by ralphcrown3: 11:18am On Sep 14, 2014
The Nigerian military said on Sunday one of its fighter jets that was operating in a northeast state where the armed forces are fighting Islamist Boko Haram militants had gone missing.
A search and rescue operation was underway for the Nigerian air force Alpha jet which was on a routine operational mission on Friday over Adamawa state when contact was lost with the aircraft, the Nigerian armed forces said in a statement.
The statement gave no more details and there was no other information available on whether the plane, which had left an air base at the Adamawa state capital Yola and had a crew of two, had crashed or been shot down.
Nigeria’s military, backed by war planes, has been fighting to push back recent advances by Boko Haram into the north of Adamawa state and also towards Maiduguri, the state capital of neighbouring Borno state. The army said it beat back an attack outside Maiduguri on Friday.
Boko Haram, which has killed thousands since it launched its anti-government insurgency in the northeast in 2009, has in recent weeks captured and held a string of towns and villages in the region, a departure from its usual hit-and-run tactics.
Its leader Abubakar Shekau is apparently trying to follow the example of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, which has declared its own caliphate. Nigeria’s government has vowed to take back the seized territory from Boko Haram.

Nairaland / General / Gen. Benjamin Adekunle, ‘black Scorpion’ Is Dead. by ralphcrown3: 11:57am On Sep 13, 2014
According to The Nation, his wife, Folake, said he died Saturday morning in Lagos although the cause of his death was not revealed.
Wikipedia reports that Adekunle was born in Kaduna. His father was a native of Ogbomosho, while his mother was a member of the Bachama tribe. He underwent secondary education at the government college, Okene (in present day Kogi State).
He enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1958 shortly after completing his school certificate examinations. He passed the army selection examinations and thereafter was despatched to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, the British Army’s initial officer entry academy. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on December 15, 1960.

As a platoon commander, he served in Kasai Province of Congo with the 1st Battalion, Queen’s Own Nigeria Regiment during his first ONUC UN peace keeping tour of duty. In 1962, Lt. Adekunle became Aide-de-Camp to the governor of the eastern region, Sir Akanu Ibiam.
The following year, as a Captain, he was posted back to the Congo as Staff Captain (A) to the Nigerian Brigade HQ at Luluabourg – under Brigadier B. Ogundipe. In 1964, Major Adekunle attended the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington, in India.
When he returned he was briefly appointed Adjutant General at the Army Headquarters in May 1965 to replace Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, who was proceeding on a course outside the country. However, he later handed over the position to Lt. Col. James Pam and was posted back to his old Battalion (1st Bn) in Enugu as a Company Commander.
Adekunle later assumed command of the Lagos Garrison as a substantive Lt. Col. When the Nigerian Civil War erupted in July 1967, Adekunle was tasked to lead elements which included two new battalions (7th and 8th) – to conduct the historic sea borne assault on Bonny in the Bight of Benin on 26 July 1968 (carried out by Major Isaac Adaka Boro’s unit).
This happened after the federal government gained confidence of most south western ethnic groups as a direct result of Biafran push to mid-west state and probe into Western region. Adekunle was promoted to Colonel after the Bonny landing.
The 6th (under Major Jalo) and 8th (under Major Ochefu) battalions of the Lagos Garrison subsequently took part in operations to liberate the Midwest following the Biafran invasion of August 1967. The 7th (under Major Abubakar) stayed behind to hold Bonny. Because Major Jalo’s Unit was seconded to Lt. Col. Murtala Mohammed’s 2nd Division, Adekunle was left with only the 8th Battalion at Escravos.
