Wigwe: access bank

Wigwe began his career at Coopers & Lybrand, Lagos as a management consultant, later qualifying as a chartered accountant. After a stint at Capital Bank, he joined GTBank where he spent over a decade working in corporate and institutional banking, rising to become the executive director in charge of institutional banking.

In 2002, Wigwe and his business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, saw a unique opportunity and grasped it, acquiring what was then a small commercial bank, Access Bank – at the time, the 65th largest of the 89 banks in the country.[3]

Access Bank is now one of the top five banks in Nigeria and ranked among the top 500 global banks according to a 2015 report by The Banker magazine and is aiming to be Africa's top bank. It currently serves over 6.5 million account-holders, through 350 branches and with more than 1,500 ATMs in major centres across Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK[4].

As one of Nigeria's foremost corporate bankers, he has helped develop some of Africa's biggest companies in the construction, telecommunications, energy and oil and gas sectors through a unique model, which involves understanding and providing financial support and expertise. His career in financial services spans more than 25 years including over a decade as Deputy Managing Director.

Wigwe also served as the Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited,[5] Access Investment & Securities Limited, Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS) and is the current Chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited. He is a board member of Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company and a member of the advisory Board for Friends Africa. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN – FCA), a Fellow of The Institute of Credit Administration, and an Honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

Since January 2014, he has been CEO and Group Managing Director of Access Bank.

He has had speaking engagements across the world including most recently at Silicon Valley[6] and Financial Times summit in Mozambique[7][8].
Awards and achievements

Under Wigwe, Access Bank has amassed quite a number of awards. In 2016, it won Bank of the Year and CEO of the Year[9] at the BusinessDay Banking awards in Lagos. It also clinched three prestigious awards at the annual Africa Banking Awards for the “Outstanding Business Sustainability” in the 2016 Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards in Germany, the first ever for an African financial institution. Access Bank Plc repeated the performance at the 2017 Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards in Germany by receiving the “Outstanding Business Sustainability Achievement Award".

Wigwe himself was named 2016 Banker of The Year separately by The Sun[10] and Vanguard [11]newspapers, two of Nigeria's biggest newspapers.
The Boys’ Brigade Nigeria

In recognition of his exemplary role in the society and contributions to youth development, the Boys’ Brigade (BB), inaugurated Herbert Wigwe, as State Patron for Lagos State Council in 2016[12][13].
The Access Conference
Herbert Wigwe speaking at the 2015 Access Conference in Lagos

His commitment to social advancement birthed the ‘Thought-Leadership Series’ known as The Access Conference[14]. The biennial event is Access Bank’s response to a global call for corporate involvement in resolving the major challenges facing humanity. Since its inauguration in 2013, the Access Conference has consistently engaged global leaders with provoking debates on issues of threats and opportunities to the world. In the 2013 edition themed ‘Sustainable Leadership’, Wigwe spoke alongside George W. Bush, Nicolas Sarkozy and John Kufuor[15], reaffirming the importance of leadership to national and corporate successes.

At the 2015 edition, Wigwe hosted distinguished global leaders such as Steve Wozniak, N. R. Narayana Murthy and José María Figueres, Muhammad Yunus and Ted Souder (Head, Industry (Retail) at Google[16][17]for discussion of the theme ‘Leading in a Transformational World – The Imperative of Innovation’. Through the conference, Access Bank has reassured the international community of Nigeria’s readiness to contribute to solving major global challenges and making the world a better place for humanity.
Philanthropy

Wigwe, Access Bank and UNICEF have a collaboration in place to offer support to vulnerable children, orphans and internationally displaced persons in the northern part of Nigeria. To raise awareness for this purpose, the bank organizes the annual high-profile Access Bank/UNICEF Charity Shield Polo tournament[18].

In February 2017, he was named co-chair of Nigerian Business Coalition against AIDS (NiBUCCA)[19], a private sector initiative to help eradicate HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and support people living with the condition.
Personal life

In January 2015, Nigerian newspaper The Punch described him as "one of Nigeria's stylish top executives". He is married to Chizoba Wigwe[20] (née Nwuba) and has 4 children: Chizi, Tochi, Hannah and David.[21] He lives and works in Lagos. He has 3 sisters and 1 brother: Joyce, Peggy, Stella and Emeka as well as 2 nieces: Aleruchi and Zara including 4 nephews: Ruchi, Oj, Chinweike and Obumneke.

His nephew, Ruchi Wigwe, is a musician and has released his first single 'Fire' on May 5th.

Agili: royal exchange insurance

In 1918, Royal Exchange commenced operations in Nigeria represented by Barclays Bank DCO and in 1921 converted to a full branch of its then parent company, Royal Exchange Assurance, London.

Royal Exchange Assurance, London was originally founded in 1720 and was one of the first two insurance companies in Britain to receive legal status via Royal Charter. Originally established for marine business, it expanded within a year to include fire and life assurance, thereby becoming Britain's first composite insurer. The establishment of its branch in Nigeria was the result of an overseas expansion drive in the early 20th century.

Pursuant to Section 396(2) of the then Companies Act of 1968, Royal Exchange was in December 1969, reconstituted and incorporated as a Private Limited Liability Company. The company went public on 18 July 1989, and was duly listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange on 3 December 1990.

In 2007, Royal Exchange entered into a merger with African Prudential Insurance Company Limited and Phoenix of Nigeria Assurance Company Plc. The merger brought about a significantly stronger Royal Exchange, better positioned to serve the needs of its clientele in the financial services sector.

Royal Exchange, previously registered in compliance with the provisions of the Insurance Act 2003, as a composite insurer of life, general and special risks, substantially re-organized itself into a group holding company in 2007 , to properly position itself as a broad based, financial services provider.

Consequently, the general and special risks insurance business was demerged into a wholly owned subsidiary, Royal Exchange General Insurance Company Limited, whilst the life assurance business was transferred to another wholly owned subsidiary, Royal Exchange Prudential Life Plc. Two additional, wholly owned subsidiaries, Royal Exchange Finance & Investment Limited and Royal Exchange Healthcare Limited were also established as part of the overall diversification strategy. More recently, Royal Exchange Asset Management was established to offer a broad range of asset and wealth management services to both our individual and corporate clients.

The Royal Exchange brand is one that we are justifiably proud of and we will ensure our relevance in the environment in which we operate by continuously focusing on customer service and product enhancement, our technology platforms and our human capital.

We are tried and tested. We build enduring relationships. We are …

You need to do justice to Phillip Emeagwali's profile

WILLINGBORO -- Philip Emeagwali, a man of immeasurably high intelligence, spurns the description people most often attach to him: genius.

"I don't like that term. People think it only means genius in the mathematical sense or that it refers to a select group of people," Emeagwali, 44, told about 50 parents last night at a public forum on schools. "But I think every one of us has the power to be a genuis. I was not born a genius; it was nurtured in me by my father."

When he was 10, growing up in western Nigeria, Emeagwali was drilled daily by his father to solve 100 math problems in one hour. There was no time to write solutions on paper -- he had 36 seconds per problem. So Emeagwali did them in his head.

Philip Emeagwali and Robert Matthews (20890 bytes)
Award-winning scientist Philip Emealgwali (left) finaliy met face to face with sixth grader Robert Matthews at the Garfield Park School in Willingboro.

"People later called me a mathematical genuis, but you would be a genuis, too, if you had to do 100 math problems in an hour," he said.

In the last two days, the man who has been called "one of the greatest intellectual giants Africa has produced" has been taking his message -- the importance of homework, cultivating encouragement at home, and surmounting obstacles -- to a school district that has been mired in problems.

Standardized test scores here sank to such lows in recent years that the state placed the district in a special monitoring program. And even as the roofs of the town's school buildings crumbled, taxes soared.

Not that Emeagwali didn't have his own trials to overcome.

When he was 12, Emeagwali lived underneath ceilings that crumbled from rocket shells. From 1967 to 1970, Nigeria fell into civil war, forcing schools to close. Emeagwali had finished only seventh grade.

"We ate only once a day. Some days we had nothing to eat. We were among the poorest families in the world," Emeagwali told students at a high school assembly earlier in the day. "Growing up poor and overcoming several obstacles made me a stronger person. I became more determined to succeed in life."

Studying on his own from 6 a.m. to midnight, Emeagwali passed entrance examinations to the University of London with top grades. In 1974, he immigrated to the United States, obtaining degrees in several subjects. His parents and eight younger brothers and sisters followed him to America.

Since then, Emeagwali, whose IQ is too high to be measured on conventional tests, has put together a resume that extends like the decimals of pi. He is listed in Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in America. He has won numerous awards, including the Gordon Bell Prize -- computer science's Nobel Prize. He devised ways of making oil fields more productive, saving the United States hundreds of millions of dollars a year. His inventions include the world's fastest computer, which in 1989 computed 3.1 billion calculations in one second.

He is now setting up a consulting firm in Baltimore, whose services are wanted by everybody from the United Nations to telecommunications firms.

While this was only his third speaking engagement in schools, students in Willingboro gave an enthusiastic response to his message, mobbing him with questions and requests for autographs after his speech. He is scheduled to speak at Willingboro's Bookbinder and Pennypacker Park Elementary Schools today.

Emeagwali came to Willingboro after Robert Matthews Jr., a sixth grader at Garfield East Elementary School, asked him, via e-mail, to speak at his school. Matthews had been assigned to do a report on an African American scientist for Black History Month.

School administrators then asked Emeagwali to speak to parents at a public forum, which was scheduled for last night. Draped in a sky-blue North African robe and cap, Emeagwali stood out in an otherwise formally suited crowd.

"Genius is not beyond the reach of these students," he told the parents. "You just need to show them how to tap into the genius that lies within them."

Dr. Philip Emeagwali, who has been called the "Bill Gates of Africa," was born in Nigeria in 1954. Like many African schoolchildren, he dropped out of school at age 14 because his father could not continue paying Emeagwali's school fees. However, his father continued teaching him at home, and everyday Emeagwali performed mental exercises such as solving 100 math problems in one hour. His father taught him until Philip "knew more than he did."

Growing up in a country torn by civil war, Emeagwali lived in a building crumbled by rocket shells. He believed his intellect was a way out of the line of fire. So he studied hard and eventually received a scholarship to Oregon State University when he was 17 where he obtained a BS in mathematics. He also earned three other degrees – a Ph.D. in Scientific computing from the University of Michigan and two Masters degrees from George Washington University.

The noted black inventor received acclaim based, at least in part, on his study of nature, specifically bees. Emeagwali saw an inherent efficiency in the way bees construct and work with honeycomb and determined computers that emulate this process could be the most efficient and powerful. In 1989, emulating the bees' honeycomb construction, Emeagwali used 65,000 processors to invent the world's fastest computer, which performs computations at 3.1 billion calculations per second.

Dr. Philip Emeagwali's resume is loaded with many other such feats, including ways of making oil fields more productive – which has resulted in the United States saving hundreds of millions of dollars each year. As one of the most famous African-American inventors of the 20th century, Dr. Emeagwali also has won the Gordon Bell Prize – the Nobel Prize for computation. His computers are currently being used to forecast the weather and to predict the likelihood and effects of future global warming.

Philip Emeagwali is a computer scientist/geologist who was one of two winners of the 1989 Gordon Bell Prize, a prize from the IEEE, for his use of the Connection Machine supercomputer – a machine featuring over 65,000 parallel processors – to help analyze petroleum fields.

Philip received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Oregon State University in 1977. He received a master's degree in environmental engineering from George Washington University in 1981, and another master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1986. He also received a post-master's degree in ocean, coastal and marine engineering from George Washington University in that year.

In 1989 Emeagwali received the Gordon Bell Prize, based on an application of the CM-2 massively-parallel computer for oil-reservoir modeling. Over the past years, he has received numerous further awards and recognitions based on his Bell Prize win, ranging from one from the World Bank-IMF Africa Club to being voted the "35th-greatest African (and greatest African scientist) of all time" in a survey by New African magazine.

His achievements were quoted in a speech by Bill Clinton as an example of what Nigerians could achieve when given the opportunity.

oga is it a must they build in the village. land is available in onitsha, awka, enugu etc so that reason does not hold. secondly many were born in the north means they hve parents. how come their parents never took them to see home. does it mean their parents did not witness d civil war. while will an igbo man forget where he came from. can a yoruba or hausa man do that. he forgot to the extent he failed to build a house in the east. my brother lets tell d truth even if kanu and ipob did not arise does it mean igbos must remain foolish there are certain things that should not b and building fine houses and factories in the north is one of such.
If we sit here and complain about why they did not relocate to the village ten years ago, we will still not be talking about the solution. The only thing is, if we can solve the problem of absorbing them in the east, then we have no problem at all.

my broda i hve been to kano and i know that. but dat is my exact annoyance with our people why do build factories and fine houses in kano. did they not learn from history. if u must build why not a small bungalow in the north and a bigger one in the east. haba how can igbos be this stupid. now they hve set a trap for themselves and expect pity. i hve no pity for them for they are foolish. my uncle stayed in miaduguru borno for almost 20yrs. built 3 houses in the east. but lived in a small unpainted bungalow with absetos roof on half plot. when boko got out of hand he moved down east and has not looked back. that is how a wise igbo man lives. you learn from the northerners living in lagos, onitsha they dont build fine houses despite how peaceful the east is. why should igbos go to an hostile enviroment and build fine houses. are they not stupid

Seriously, you are right. But we cannot abandon them now when they are in trouble. A practical solution should be chosen to help them out of this dire situation. We have not been doing our work as a people.

Sabo take your preaching elsewhere. Like the North has not been killing them like forever. You think that if IPOB stop calling for referendum that it will automatically stop the North from killing Igbos there.

You are a sabo.

Sabo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whether you shout Sabo or yaba, the truth is the truth. I am not going to go into insulting with a brother. Just let it pass.

oga no vex what do u mean by house them. are u trying to say they had no home b4 moving up north. are u trying to say they built houses up north but forgot to build any in the east. imagine u in that position would u build a house first in the north b4 the east. pity i dont hve for igbos. let them return and build the east. necessity is the mother of all inventions

I am not supposed to say this in a public forum but the truth is, how many of them have a welcoming extended family in the east. Many of them complain about their family problems that's why don't like coming home. You might want to rubbish it but some of them have land disputes which make them stop coming totally.

Another thing you need to know is that, many if them were born in the north and have only known the north since they were kids.

u mean the whole zoo will become humanitarian zones......the ones that came back during boko haram crisis are now doing well in the south

I assure you, there are still a lot of Igbo's in the Maiduguri and environs. Kano, Kaduna, sokoto and Niger house of the highest population of Igbo's. We need to look from their own perspective too.

oga lets tell ourselves the truth, igbos up north are there for one primary reason money. money has beclouded their sense of reason. secondly if i face danger everyday what are u still doing there. what concern village people with igbos up north. dont village people hve lives and enough prob of their own. you talk of job losses what jobs. are their igbos working for hausa man in the north. aside trading which is d main occupation what else.

We have engineers, bankers, doctors, lecturers, real estate investors here. Igbo's are doing virtually everything in the north. Igbo ppl own hotels even more than northerners in kano. They are not just here trading, many have factories especially plastic factories. You don't know. Igbo have millionaire city in kano where they built one of the finest houses.

The truth is, many of you talk because you have not seen very successful Igbo ppl here. They are quite much.

realhumanity, I perfectly understand your post cos I've lived and still have my people staying in the North, Even though I'm presently in the South East. I've also tried time without number to explain this to them, buh the mentality of those of them here who haven't moved out of the confines of the zone leaves me worried.

Majority of them don't care what happens to those in the North, they keep chanting "come back home" like it's that easy leaving a place you have settled and your source of livelihood to come back and live in poverty and penury. Ask them how many they can house, or if East can contain everyone that comes back and watch how they dodge the questions and tongue lash you with insults, it's so unfair, we are meant to be our brothers keepers and reason like one, an attack on one igbo is an attack on all the igbo nation, we must learn to uphold the legacy we are known for.

Lastly, this is not an avenue for skull miners and other igbo haters to vent their hatred, rather, look for for sustainable means of solving your own many problems. This also doesn't change our ideology about Biafra.

The call for Biafra still stays but we need to be smarter than the people around us. It is not about achieving Biafra, we should achieve a Biafra where everyone will start happy not picking crumbs on the ground.

The number of vices will increase if we don't checkmate these things before it goes wrong.

Most of our brothers living in the north do not see far, I was there in Kaduna in in 1998 to year 2000 when the sharia riot took place two times.
Despite that I was making money on my uncles hotel, but I said to myself, this is not a place to stay & invest. I came back to east.
Bleep one Nigeria!
@OP, come back now, & u are still there writting nonsense
Why investing in a region their do not invest in yours?

I am no longer in the north but that doesn't mean I should not care for the people staying there. You just can't pull millions of ppl home. Even Europe had to share the population between themselves when it came to Syria refugees. We need to see beyond our nose.

What is the solution?

The solution is we first create schools for their children in the east. Let them start staying in the east. When their kids are no longer with them, they see no reason building houses or more investment here because their minds will always be where their children are.

With the increase of children to the east, business men who are into kids and adolescent products will see a booming market in the east and go back too.

I have more plans but they cannot be written here. I just showed you how to push the first set of traders home.

When they distroyed igbos properties and it ended like that.
Bliv me that cant happen again..
The wolrd has gone vast so is the igbo nation.
If they tried such agin.. they would be sued.
It seems u think ipob is only abt those ones in d village.. u think ipob is "FILLED WITH ILLITERATE" like our enemies always say..( lol thats funny ).
U will be suprised to know there are igbo lawyers and doctors in diaspora who are supporting kanu
And whose videos i have seen.

It seems u dnt watch kanu interviews.
Becox already bliv he is wrong and bad..
What the media painted him and what they want u to bliv about him.

IGBO PROPERTIES OUTSIDE IGBOLAND ARE 100% SAFE I GUARANTEE U.

Have you read where the news carried it that yankura or sabon gari market got burnt? Google it, you will see them in the news. these almajiris sleep in these markets and are capable of causing damage. You guys keep talking like u are dealing with learned ppl.

So if Emeka in Onitsha said something bad against Hausa/Fulani then Hausa/Fulani inThe North should kill every Emeka and Uche living amongst them and you are here to justify it?
Stay in the north and enjoy your cheap accommodation, cheap suya and cheap Sabon gari ashawos at the expense of your life.

You have a problem with understanding my comment. Emeka is learned and understands the beauty of life but Sule is uneducated, wasn't cared for and under the care of a radical northerner. We need to study the philosophy of other people before we engage them.

Igbo's have more to lose if we fight with these people. Stop acting like you won't care when you start seeing riots in the north.
