Politics / Us Denies Failing To Help Nigeria by realitiescom(m): 3:56pm On Nov 13, 2014
Washington (AFP) - The United States hit back Wednesday at allegations by the Nigerian ambassador of failing to help fight Boko Haram militants, saying there had been "a great deal" of US aid to his country.
In the past six months since the Islamic militants snatched some 200 schoolgirls in northern Nigeria, Washington has shared intelligence with the Nigerian army, begun training a new battalion and held high-level talks on the threat of Boko Haram, a US official said.
In a speech made public Tuesday, ambassador Adebowale Adefuye appeared to have taken US officials by surprise when he launched into a tirade against the US administration.

Nigerian leaders were "not satisfied with the scope, nature and content of the United States' support for us in our struggle against terrorists," he said.

He accused Washington of not providing the "lethal" weapons needed to deliver "a killer punch" to the militants.

But State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki shot back that the US had "provided and approved sales of military equipment to its armed forces."

"These decisions are made, of course, after careful scrutiny to ensure they conform with United States law."

But she acknowledged the US had refused to transfer some Cobra helicopters due to concerns about the Nigerian army's ability to use them.

There were also "ongoing concerns about the Nigerian military's protection of civilians when conducting military operations," Psaki said, adding these had been discussed with the Nigerian authorities.

Adefuye told members of the Council on Foreign Relations on Monday that allegations of human rights abuses by the military were "rumors, hearsays and exaggerated accounts" put about by rivals of President Goodluck Jonathan and rights groups.

But Psaki stressed the US would not raise such concerns "if we didn't feel and others didn't feel that they were warranted."

Washington was ready to help Nigeria train and improve the effectiveness of its military, Psaki added, urging the government to investigate allegations of abuses.

Sports / Mayweather Beat Alvarez In Las Vegas by realitiescom(m): 11:33am On Sep 15, 2013
He frustrated the Mexican early, pounded him with big right hands in the middle rounds, and made him look just like he said he would - like any other opponent.

Mayweather was favoured 117-111 and 116-112 on two ringside scorecards while a third surprisingly had the fight 114-114.

‘‘I just listened to my corner, listened to my dad," Mayweather said. ‘‘My dad had a brilliant game plan, and I went out there and got the job done.’’

Mayweather remained unbeaten in 45 fights and added another piece of the junior middleweight title to his collection in a fight that was fought at a catchweight 68.9 kilogram limit. Alvarez weighed in at that weight, but was an unofficial 74.8 kilograms when he got into the ring while Mayweather was an even 68kg.

Mayweather’s speed was the difference all night as he was able to land straight rights and left jabs, then get out of the way before Alvarez was able to respond. But while Mayweather used great defence, he wasn’t afraid to attack often and at different angles, finding Alvarez with punches he couldn’t anticipate.

‘‘He’s very talented, very elusive,’’ Alvarez said.

Alvarez was supposed to be Mayweather's greatest challenge and he did his best to force the action. Like others, though, he spent much of his night punching at an opponent who had already moved away from him.

‘‘I didn’t know how to get him, it’s extremely simple,’’ Alvarez said. ‘‘He’s a great fighter, very intelligent. The frustration was getting in there, but he’s a great fighter. We tried to catch him.’’

The sellout crowd at the MGM Grand tried its best to urge Alvarez on, but the cheers of "Canelo! Canelo!" were faint by the late rounds.

Alvarez kept trying to force the fight, but every time he went after Mayweather he paid for it with a counter right or a combination to the head. By the fourth round he was beginning to get frustrated, landing a low blow that angered Mayweather, who was further angered when Alvarez refused to touch gloves with him to resume the fight.

The fight was one of the richest ever - if not the richest ever - with a live gate of $US20 million ($A21.72 million) and at least another $US100 million ($A108.58 million) from pay-per-view.

Pstsmith: You guys should stop giving fake news
The reason for the riot is the increase of bus fair from 50NGN to 100NGN from town camp at ikpa road to main camp off nwaniba for engeneering and science students. whc will amount to 200NGN per day and its too much dats y we protested n stoped lectures for today and behold the police who were calm at first started throwing 'tear' gas...dats the story, death have not been confirmed yet.

I saw a student being shot in my very front, and he died on d spot

pendusky: I Just got a call that there's a Riot Going on now in Uniuyo Main Campus!

Can Any one Confirm?

(As at 6pm) At last i jst received a call from a friend, what i heard is that the social science students are protesting for school mgt shifting most of their courses to permanent sites which is about 20mins drive from the main campus yet school buses are not available for them. That means they need to pay extra 200 naira to and fro everyday to the permanent campus for most of their lectures.

Am told VC office has been burned down, police throwing teargas and two student killed...

Will update the post as i get the latest development.

That very true !
