NIGERIAN MILITARY IS SEEN AS LOSING SUPPORT - THE NEW YORK TIMES 1984

LAGOS, Nigeria, April 29— Four months after seizing power, Nigeria's military leaders appear to be suffering an erosion of popular support.
Last Dec. 31, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Buhari led a group of young officers in a coup against the civilian Government of President Shehu Shagari, saying the takeover was necessary to save Nigeria, Africa's richest and most populous nation, from economic collapse.
The military intervention appeared at the time to enjoy enthusiastic support from a broad range of Nigeria's population.
Many intellectuals argued that the corruption and incompetence of the Shagari administration had made drastic action both necessary and inevitable. Traders, merchants and people in the streets welcomed the soldiers and looked forward to a quick improvement in their standard of living.

Growing Disappointment
Recently, however, there seems to be growing disappointment with both the military Government's approach and pace.
''Since coming to power, this Government has not found a single problem,'' said Dr. Olu Onagoruwa, a prominent lawyer and a longtime opponent of the Shagari administration. ''But it has managed to alienate the judiciary, the press, labor and students - all the groups that supported it just a few months ago.''

Critics of the military Government point out that it has yet to present its budget. Loan negotiations with the International Monetary Fund continue but Western economists say that Nigeria and the I.M.F. appear to be further apart now than during the final days of the Shagari administration.

Early indications that General Buhari would agree to devalue Nigeria's currency, liberalize trade and reduce domestic petroleum subsidies have so far not materialized. Prices Have Climbed

In addition, prices for food and other essential commodities, which fell in the first weeks after the coup largely because of the presence of soldiers in the marketplaces, have now returned to or exceeded their levels before the coup. Unemployment has been rising, and many of the imported raw materials and spare parts needed to keep factories running have been lacking.

Critics note further that political activity and even debate have been banned and some students organizations have been outlawed. There has been a clampdown on Nigeria's press, and the country's traditionally independent judiciary has also seen its role sharply diminished.

''At the moment we're looking at a clear movement toward authoritarian dictatorship,'' said Stanley N. Macebuh, executive editor of The Guardian, an independent newspaper that had often taken the Shagari administration to task. ''It's a trend that disturbs a lot of people, not least those who welcomed the change of government.''

Spokesmen for the military leadership maintain that they know what they are doing and refuse to be rushed. They deny the charges of inaction, saying that steps have been taken. Trials Being Prepared
The Government, they say, has put much energy into investigating the corruption of the Shagari administration and in preparing tribunals to try the accused, close to 500 of whom are now under detention.
Officials say about 2,000 illegal aliens have been ejected from the country and several thousand people have been detained in a crackdown on suspected criminals and Moslem extremists.
They say Nigeria's bloated bureaucracy has been streamlined through the dismissal of thousands of officials and civil servants.
Three weeks ago an agreement was reached in London on converting a part of Nigeria's uninsured trade debts into loans.
The Government's critics respond that the economic initiatives treat symptoms rather than causes and aid the larger issue of how to restructure Nigeria's economy.
A Western diplomat said General Buhari ''could have accomplished so much if he had moved quickly and boldly in the early days when his popularity was still so high and when he could have credibly blamed everything on Shagari.''

Politics / Opinion!! Was President Buhari Visit To America A Flop? by Reddit: 6:03pm On Jul 23, 2015
I recently asked myself a thought-provoking question today. What was the recent visit by our president to America able to achieved? To be honest, for a moment I couldn't give a concrete well thought answer to that question.

Below are some of the things I thought our president failed to achieved

No assurance with the US support for arms, equipment and intelligence to accelerate ending the insurgency in the NE
No concrete economy policy and plan (This was evident during the CNN Amanpour interview when asked about the economy)
No clear cut ways of how to recover looted and stolen money by some of our rogue both serving and past politicians.
Not a single well documented partnership deal was sealed in any area. Was it infrastructure development, power, education, health, technology and services? Nothing
Didn’t discuss anything about the AGOA (African growth and Opportunity Acts) Extension and Enhancement Act. To me this is one key and vita area he would had brought to the table as Nigeria being the power house in Africa development.

Apart from the 'no to gay marriage' which they are using to score cheap political points that wasn't part of the official agenda in the first place, please what other things the recent visit able to achieved?
Oh well, maybe he went to thank the America for helping him win the election.

See the below quote during his meeting with John Kerry the secretary of state

PRESIDENT BUHARI: Thank you very much, (inaudible). I’m very pleased to get this opportunity to thank the Secretary of State because his visit to Nigeria, which he’s just referred to, since his visit seemed like a friend to Nigeria. As the United States’ message sent to the previous administration was clean and clear that the United States would not accept anything extraconstitutional, that prepared the minds of Nigerians to back us and to arrive where we are today. Nigeria will remain very grateful to the United States, to the President, and to the Secretary of State. He saw the president then, he saw the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, and he saw the opposition. And by the day, the United States maintained pressure on the government, the law enforcement agencies, and the election officials to make sure that the election was free and fair.

We thank God, we thank the United States, we thank technology for the introduction of a permanent voter’s card and reader cards made so much difference from previous elections. I thank you very much, Secretary. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen of the press.

SECRETARY KERRY: Thank you, Mr. President.

PRESIDENT BUHARI: Thank you very much. Happy to see you.

SECRETARY KERRY: Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you. We’re going to have a working lunch now. Thank you.

Politics / Buhari ' Going To America' - Prof Pat Utomi by Reddit: 1:27pm On Jul 15, 2015

Confirmation has come that President Muhammmadu Buhari will be going to America this month. This going to America should not only be different from that of the African prince portrayed by Eddie Murphy, it should be different from that which marked both the beginning of the Yar’Adua and Jonathan presidencies. This going to America for an ailing nation of great potential must be a concrete effort at forging partnerships in pursuit of the great goal of the Great Escape from misery for the biggest concentration of the people of Africa descent.

Going to America has always been a matter laced with Irony. As a young youth corps member reporting for the Newbreed newsmagazine some 38 years ago, I wrote a story that pointed to Army Intellectual, Olusegun Obasanjo, criticising African leaders journeying to America.

As head of state then, Obasanjo had evidently forgotten his old quips, and was preparing for a journey to America. I have never thought of going to America a problem. The mindset of “America their America” offered by one of our literary giants was not my own frame. What my concern always was and remains the issue for this visit, is, how to go beyond ceremonials and photo opps to handshakes that produce mutually beneficial outcomes. For the US and Nigeria this has to include in today’s context a boosting of capacity for security and economic advancement in Nigeria and trade opportunities with new markets for American products where there is comparative advantage that does not depress prospects for sustainable development in a country of prospects.

With security problems in Nigeria’s North-East threatening efforts to reduce the scourge of poverty, disease, and a brutish state of nature, a huge infrastructure deficit, financing gaps that have left even salaries unpaid for months, partnerships with foreign powers need be obsessively focused on relationships that can help bridge gaps and uplift the Nigerian condition.

In this regard, I am persuaded that with we, as Nigeria, should unveil a clear national strategy anchored on latent comparative advantage based on select factor endowments in which value chains in which we are quite competitive are developed into global markets. With the Chinese understanding of the benefits of industrial policy in building such values chains, we should not be shy to do infrastructure deals around industrial parks with them. In the same way, opportunities for partnerships with the South Koreans, Japanese and with the Australians in mining and road infrastructure should not be allowed to slip by. With the Americans, so much can be done with power, services, technology and education. We need to expand our fast growing education and health sectors. With so many Nigerians of the Diaspora active in the US in these areas, the trip should be used to build bridges. We just saw reports of a meeting of Nigerian physicians in the US which took place in Orlando Florida. We should tag into that to be a medical tourism hub.

What a visit such as this must do is provide the opportunity for President Buhari to find that one quiet moment to provide assurance of lasting goodwill if specific support with arms, equipment and intelligence to accelerate ending the insurgency, is offered. A clear shopping list is helpful and a pointer to an appropriate desk officer to serve as a clearing house should be determined. We should neither play the subservient with a begging nor our protocol laced meeting of equal sovereigns, friends don’t ask who is bigger. They know.

We miss much running around at the highest levels with much concerns when the ambassador can court the right desk officer and get things moving. If President Buhari can convey the warmth of friendship, passion, and selfless giving of self for the good of a country that has been unfairly treated, he could get a useful nod from President Barack Obama that his people can work with. He needs to have a few of those critical people with him. He must not leave the impression the ones before him left, that there is no capacity or interest in making promises bear fruit. Our failure to profit from the African Growth and Opportunities Act is a case in point.

In that sense, an opportunity to thank Obama for the Power Up Africa initiative with specific requests for how it can help reduce the darkness of our patch of earth at night and put many to work, so Boko Haram will find it harder to find recruits should be clearly stated. Here, it will be nice to nicely apologise for our tardiness with AGOA, and pledge that in the spirit of change and new beginnings in Nigeria, the economy of Nigeria will be more engaged with an AGOA extension.

President Buhari will profit much from elevating the tone by showing resolve to wholeheartedly fight corruption. America helps with tracking and repatriating money stolen from the Nigerian people. This should be requested.

If change is to result in dividends for the Nigerian people, President Buhari’s visit to Washington must not be a visit from the leftovers. It must be worked at so it becomes a journey into a welcoming mat for a strategic partner. When President Jimmy Carter’s 1977 world tour that would have brought him from Europe into Africa was terminated in Europe, due to urgent developments at home, a rescheduling was done. On resumption in 1978, the visit to Nigeria was dubbed, by one of America’s newsmagazines, as “Carter’s journey to the leftovers.” We owe it to our children that this visit to Washington not to be seen as another visit from the leftovers.

Politics / Buhari Goes From Nigeria’s Change Champion To ‘baba Go Slow’ - Bloomberg by Reddit: 8:09pm On Jul 01, 2015
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari took office a month ago on a wave of hope that he would quickly deal with a deepening economic crisis and an Islamist insurgency in the north. So far, he hasn’t met those expectations.

While Africa’s biggest oil producer has been hit by a 40 percent fall in petroleum prices in the past year that has slowed economic growth and weakened the currency, Buhari, 72, has delayed naming a cabinet until September. As the momentum of being the first opposition candidate to win power at the ballot box fades, critics are mocking him as a sluggish elderly man, or “Baba Go Slow.”

Buhari has acknowledged the crisis, saying last month that his government is facing severe financial strain, with a Treasury that’s “virtually empty,” and his party is calling for patience. Yet his lack of urgency in tackling economic woes could leave Nigeria badly adrift, said John Ashbourne, an economist at Capital Economics in London.

“Every week that Nigeria goes without a cabinet increases the chance that it will face a dangerous shock -- whether a revenue collapse or a currency crisis,” Ashbourne said by phone Tuesday. “Leaving the federation without a finance minister would be a questionable choice at the best of times; doing so during a period of economic instability is difficult to explain.”

Investor Displeasure

Nigeria’s currency, twice devalued in the past year in an attempt to cope with lower oil income, has weakened 7.7 percent against the dollar this year on the interbank market. The International Monetary Fund estimates that growth will slow to 4.8 percent this year from 6.1 percent in 2014. The naira was trading at 198.85 against the U.S. dollar at 2.38 p.m. in Lagos.
The Nigerian Stock Exchange Index hit its 2015 peak of 35,728.12 on April 2, the day after Buhari was declared the election winner. Since then it has fallen 8 percent.

The cabinet delay won’t please investors, said Alan Cameron, an economist at Exotix Partners LLP. They’re expecting tighter fiscal policy, a currency devaluation and a greater focus on tax collection after the drop in oil prices, he said.
“There was initially some hope that Buhari would be able to tackle these changes more quickly and with more credibility, but the time line has now been pushed back,” Cameron said by phone from London. “It’s going to be a difficult pill to swallow for foreign investors.”

Inertia Concern

The central bank has banned importers from using the foreign-exchange market to buy certain goods as it seeks to stabilize the naira and hold on to external reserves, which are down 16 percent this year to $29 billion.
“Even what little could have been achieved so far, such as the nomination of ministers, has not been addressed, and there is a sense of inertia,” Folarin Gbadebo-Smith, managing director of the Center for Public Policy Alternatives, a Lagos-based research group, said by phone Wednesday.
Buhari’s own party, the All Progressives Congress, has recognized the growing public disenchantment and pleaded for patience.
“Nigerians are right to demand even a faster pace. Nigerians are right to ask that a government be quickly put in place,” party spokesman Lai Mohammed told reporters at a June 30 press conference in Lagos, the commercial capital. “All we ask for is a little more patience, a little more understanding.”

Government Change

Buhari is facing a unique situation because his victory over the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, ended 16 years of rule by the Peoples Democratic Party, his spokesman Femi Adesina said.
“This is not a normal changeover, it is from one government to another,” he said.
Buhari, who previously governed Nigeria as military ruler in the 1980s, has moved more quickly in the fight against the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, which has waged a violent six-year campaign in the north.

He ordered the army to move its headquarters from Abuja, the capital, to the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the scene of some of the worst fighting, and has traveled to neighboring countries such as Chad and Niger to discuss cross-border military cooperation.
It’s the “one area in which the Buhari administration has hit the ground running,” Mohammed said.
Yet, while troops from Nigeria and Chad have largely dislodged Boko Haram from its self-declared caliphate in the northeast this year, the insurgents have stepped up hit-and-run attacks.

Corruption Fight

Buhari will also have to deal with shortcomings in his own army, which Amnesty International said last month should be investigated for war crimes, including unlawful killings.
In a step toward meeting his campaign promise to attack corruption that has crippled Nigeria for decades, Buhari disbanded the board of the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. The National Economic Council on Monday set up a four-member panel to probe its accounts.
Even some opposition lawmakers say Buhari needs more time.

“His approach may be different, but I am patient, I will give him some time,” Ben Murray-Bruce, a PDP senator, said in a June 29 interview in Abuja.
Where Buhari has come up short is communicating a sense of engagement to the public, said Gbadebo-Smith.

“He doesn’t say anything about anything,” he said. “The public would be satisfied with signals that say we are doing something about this, we are on top of this.”

Bro do you use Morgan? I noticed when i place an order to buy some shares, my portfolio gets updated to reflect my purchase only after the market has closed for the day, making it difficult to get in and out of a market on the same day even if one has met and surpassed his exit price.

It is true that your portfolio gets updated at the close of the trading session but you can actually trade as many times as possible during trading session in a day. All you need is to make sure you trade within your portfolio limit. For instance you purchase some units of a certain stock A, and decide to sell it after making some gains within hours. After selling, that proceed isn't updated immediately on your portfolio but it's there. You can enter another trade with that proceed and it will be executed. You can repeat that process as many times as possible withing trading session.

I hope this helps

SEC Approves Stocks Can Now Trade At One Kobo Per Share. Here Is What It Means

Do you remember what 1 kobo looked like?

The Security and Exchange Company has finally approved for the Nigerian Stock Exchange to move the 50 kobo floor a stock can trade at to as low as 1 kobo.

The Rule states that “notwithstanding its par value, the price of every share listed on The Exchange shall be determined by the market, save that no share shall trade below a price floor of one Kobo per unit (N0.01)”.

The NSE had announced plans for shifting the floor price and was merely awaiting SEC approval to begin. However, SEC did not disclose details of how NSE is expected to proceed. We will have to wait for NSE to provide details as to when it plans for the new floor price to become effective.

What it means?

Currently, the lowest Nigerian stocks can trade for is 50kobo. That is no matter how much a share price drops it can never drop below 50 kobo. It is unclear how 50 kobo was selected as a floor price but it perhaps explains why most quoted stocks have a nominal price of 50 kobo per share.

With the floor set to be moved to 1kobo (N 0.01) stocks can now drop to as low as One kobo per share if the markets deems the price to be so.

Why the change?

There are several reasons why it makes sense to move the floor from 50 kobo to 1 kobo however one stands out to us. A share price of 50 kobo per share can be artificial and thus means some stocks are expensive. Imagine you hold a stock that trades at 50 kobo per share and no one is willing to buy at that price. The market probably feels it is worth lower. With the stock trading at 50 kobo per share no one is interested in buying even if the seller is willing to sell for much lower. Now that the floor is reduced by 98% to 1 kobo per share, there is room for buyers and sellers to bargain more thus creating more liquidity for the market.

What are the implications?

The implications are far-reaching and in fact could trigger a massive sell-off in the early days and weeks of its implementation. Lets explore what could happen

Penny Stocks – Investors with a lot of penny stocks in their portfolio could be among the first to be hit by a sell off. Stocks between 50 kobo per share and N1 per share could be in the firing line as investors reassess their values.

Illiquid stocks – Stocks that have remained stuck at 50 kobo per share could also begin to see some movement as investors who have held these stocks for months or even years may have their stockbrokers place a sell mandate. Some mandate could even be at any price further depressing value.

Nominal Values – It is very likely that some company could decide to reduce the nominal value of their shares to 1 kobo per share via a scheme of share reconstruction. That way they could escape the wrath of a massive value accretion. Whether that will be possible will depend on the regulation that SEC proposes around this.

Fund raising activities – Fund raising activities could also be significantly affected by this move. For example companies looking to embark on IPOs or Public Offers may have to list at a much lower price per share meaning that they will have to increase their shares outstanding to accommodate the value that they seek. This leads to the next point

Registrars – these guys may also need to re price the fees they charge for their registrar business. For example, if a company needs to raise N10 billion at 50 kobo per share, it will need to sell 20 billion units. At 1 kobo per share it will be 1 trillion shares. That is astronomical and could create a reconciliation headache for most registrars.

Your Portfolio – Those who have portfolios dominated by penny stocks may have to reconsider their portfolio mix as they might be the first to be hit. If penny stocks get pummeled like we suggest, then portfolios that have a large constituents of penny stocks will decline massively in returns.

Couple of things here,

Like someone rightly said, think of somethings you can buy from the north and sell in the south and then vice versa.
For instance you can buy yam, onions, etc from the north and then sell in the south. On your way back to the north you could get things like red palm oil, plantain from the south to sell.

You could also consider processing of catfish for sale. Get to know some catfish farmers, get supplies of fresh catfish from them, prepare the catfish by adding some preservatives (These are readily available), get the catfish dried on fire with a controlled temperature, if you have oven, excellent. When fully dried and allowed to cool, you'll then package them depending on the sizes or weights on a customized sealed transparent nylon bags(readily available also) with your business name and contacts on them.

During the pilot phase, take samples with you and go to supermarkets and some business people around your area to market your products, tell them you can supply them at a discount.
You can also advertise your products here on nairaland with some good pictures, I bet you in no distant time you'll be overwhelmed with orders.

You need to get into action, stop imagining things. Try out different things and don't be afraid to fail.

Politics / Akpabio Commissions Ibom Specialist Hospital Photos! by Reddit: 7:43pm On May 26, 2015
For Akpabio, that dream has become a reality with the unveiling of the multipurpose hall last week. But that seemed just a drop in the
ocean as the governor continues to go round the state in the twilight of his administration to commission 165 other projects that have been completed in the state in recent weeks. Among those projects are world-class specialist hospital that costs about N30 billion and five- star hotel that will be inaugurated today according to schedule of activities in the state. The 308-bed international specialist hospital, billed for inauguration on Monday, May 25, is an ultra-modern medical facility with six fully integrated modular theatres that will redirect medical tourism to Akwa Ibom State and the country.

The hospital that is equipped with 640 slides CT scan, digital mammography, endoscopy surgery, highly sophisticated intensive care units and medical gas plants is sitting on a large landmass with paperless and fully automated laboratories. It also has a helipad to facilitate easy emergency movements to and from the hospital. The entire hospital system is also hooked up to a global system for best practice.
In an interview Akpabio discussed the idea behind the establishment of a hospital of this magnitude. He said: “We lose billions of dollars every year to medical trips abroad. We have also lost a lot of people, not because we don’t have the expertise in the country.

We needed a hospital that can run at international standard. I decided to build general hospitals in local governments that did not have and in areas that are very populated, even if the local government already had one. I found out that what we have here can go for a teaching hospital.
“We also decided to have a hospital that would answer to the needs of Nigerians in terms of advance health management and that was why we built the Ibom Specialist Hospital. It is not like a teaching hospital, it is like a quaternary hospital, it is higher than a teaching hospital. We are starting it with about six modular theatres with equipments, that if for instance you are doing a cardiological investigation on a patient,
cardiologists from around the world can hook up to the theatre and see real time what is going on and make their contributions to the
examination and operation. “That kind of hospital cannot be run by government; we needed to hand it over to a private sector. That is the one that will be a revenue earner. So, instead of rich and wealthy Nigerians and nationals of other West African countries going abroad, it is
easier to come here. Sometimes, people die in the air while being transported abroad for treatment. We wanted to shorten travel time
for patients going abroad and at the same time get revenue for the state from health tourism. It is a beautiful concept, it is also very big. It is comfort combined with excellence. We have about 380 suites and so many operating wards. We are starting with 150 expatriates all at once.

We are in agreement with a Swiss hospital group and an Arab healthcare group in partnership with Cardio Care in Lagos, which is a group of
cardiologists. We are providing a place for a lot of Nigerian skilled personnel abroad to come back home. We are providing a place that is equal to where they are operating from. The MRI system we have installed in that hospital is the best in the whole of West Africa. There is none in Nigeria today. We went for the best because we want to save lives.”

My biggest investment mistakes and lessons learnt

1. Not selling losers (FBNH, Dangote Sugar, NASCON)

Lessons learnt

Once proven that your purchase to be too high, sell and take the one-time loss rather than add to the opportunity loss
Irrespective of how good a company/stock is, your purchase price determines your potential returns

2. Selling winners too early/Not buying more (UBCAP, OandO)

Lessons learnt

Buy more of your winners (not losers), if the original story gets better, even if it is at higher prices when you first bought
Don't sell in a hurry, infact don't sell a winning stock untill you have a more promising investment lined up

3. Going contrarian on price alone (Transcorp)

Lessons learnt

A company that doesn't meet your key investment checklist criteria is too expensive at any price

I know all these have been said here in this thread repeatedly but I see myself making these mistakes over and over again.
I started avoiding these mistakes when I began learning how to separate emotions from investment. The bottom line is this, successful investing is more about being able to curb your inherent biases and impulses rather than brilliant stock picking, which forms one of the principles on which NSEMPA operates.
