Nairaland / General / Succeeding In Iced Blocks Business And Preparing Effective Business Plan. by Refecon: 12:46am On Mar 21, 2017
Have you ever been thirsty in a hot weather and was offered a cold water or drinks? I guess, you already know the refreshing feeling that comes with that. This is one of the services and relieves that iced block business owner offer to millions of people on daily bases.
Epileptic power supply, is one of our major challenges as a developing country, so iced blocks are needed to help chill our drinks, portable water and perishables. This is why iced blocks business is highly relevant in our society today.

Starting iced blocks business require relatively low capital, although it depends on how big or small you want to start. But if you are starting this business in a place with poor power supply, you may spend more on diesel. The business requires no technical skills, the basic skills you need are Business management, Customer service skills and Marketing skills.

Below are simple steps to a successful iced blocks business;
1. Feasibility studies.
You need a proper feasibility study before venturing into any business; same thing applies to iced block business because in some cases, a business idea may look great on a paper, but proper investigation may prove otherwise. A proper feasibility study will help you come up with an effective business plan that will guarantee high returns.

2. Proper location.
The location also has it own impacts, but if you did a proper feasibility study, you would already have the idea of a suitable location. Although in Nigeria, with a population of over 130million, you have a chance of making it from various locations as far as there is easy access to clean portable water. Some location may require you own an alternative power supply. Generally the business is best suited for a place of large gathering like market place, stadium, event centers, etc.

3. Buy your equipments.
The equipments for this business are few, what you need is a freezer or iced blocks making machines, generators and easy access to water.

4. Register your business.
Although this kind of business doesn’t really require you register a name before you get started. Because, you are likely be dealing with individuals at the early stages. But if you intend to grow your level where you will be dealing with corporate organizations, then you may need to register a name.

5. Advertise and market your business.
Make people aware of your presence, contact event managers, if possible create a bill board, use any proper medium to reach out to people and make sure you are reliable.

6. Offer additional services.
Since iced blocks have season when they are more in demand and when they are less in demand, additional services will keep you busy making some cool cash. You can help people preserve their perishable like iced creams, help people cool their drinks, also those dealing in frozen foods can benefit from your services.

Nairaland / General / Re: Things You Should Know Before Going Into Iced Blocks Business. by Refecon: 8:43am On Mar 16, 2017
The amount depends on various parameters and your choice. There are many factors , for instance, some already have a generator, while some prefer soundproof generators to that of open lister generator.
Basically, if you intend to get an iced block machine, and at the same time get a generator, I can't give you any quote because generators differs, but for iced blocks machine alone, with N280000 you can start up and increase as your business expands.
Thank you.
Nairaland / General / Things You Should Know Before Going Into Iced Blocks Business. by Refecon: 1:24am On Mar 16, 2017
Like every other business, there’s always a risk of loosing and a chance of succeeding. Iced blocks business is no exception to this; so, one must understand the basics of this business before going into it.
The good news is the challenges are few, notwithstanding, these few challenges are capable of causing you huge lost if not taken care of.

Below are some of the challenges of Iced blocks business;
1. Financial challenge.
2. Power problems and energy consumptions.
3. Improper fabrications and installations.

Financial challenges are one of the reasons so many individuals have fallen victims in this business. I always advice my customers to make the best use of their money while choosing the capacity of iced blocks machines they want. It is better you use the little fund available to you to build an effective 40 pieces iced blocks capacity machine which will always give you blocks at all times, than managing it to build an 80 pieces capacity of iced blocks machine that may not serve you, why not wait until you have enough fund for the larger capacity machines. I advice you go for the best rather than mediocre.

Power problems and energy consumption is another thing that affects this business. Due to epileptic power supply and high cost of fuel, you must be prepared on how to tackle this challenge. I always advice you have an alternative power supply, while a diesel consuming generator is preferable.

Improper fabrication and installations, is the vital of them all, once the builder don’t get it right, forget about making profit in this business. There are many Engineers and Technicians, claiming to build iced block making machines here and there. I carried out a survey as a customer, and I noticed that some are really good at building and installing iced blocks machines, but they are vary few, while others are just building it because man must work. They lack the basic information and analysis to determine how effective their fabrication will work. Always make sure the builder is a trusted one and understands the secretes of building effective machines. If possible, ask from those who are already using his/her iced blocks machines.

Nairaland / General / Continuation Of Things You Should Know As An Air-conditioner User. by Refecon: 1:59am On Mar 05, 2017
FAULTS, POSSIBLE CAUSE AND SOLUTIONS.
1 Out side unit fan not rotating.
Terminal wires. Check for burnt terminal wire and replace them.
The fan capacitor may be bad. Replace with equivalent size of the capacitor. Note: Every fan or compressor has a specified capacity of capacitor, which is measured in micro-farad (uf)
The fan may be bad. Replace with a good fan.
2 Compressor shutting down and coming on after a while.
Timer. The timer maybe on. Check the remote and adjust the settings.
The power supply maybe insufficient.
The compressor capacitor may be weak. Replace with another capacitor of same capacity.
The fins might be blocked with dirt and dust, thereby hindering proper condensation. Wash or blow the fins and ensure they are free from dirt.
If it’s just charged with refrigerant, the refrigerant might just be too much. Reduce the quantity of refrigerant in the unit.
3 Air-conditioner dropping water inside.
Check for blockage in the drain hose. Make sure it is through.
Ensure the drain hose isn’t inclined or twisted.

Note: Make sure the air-conditioning unit is switched off and unplugged before doing any service on it.

Nairaland / General / Things You Should Know As An Air-conditioner User, To Save Costs. by Refecon: 8:27pm On Feb 26, 2017
Things you should know as an air-conditioner user, to save costs.

Air-conditioners may seem expensive to maintain due to sensitivity of its components, but if you are observant with your air-conditioning units, you will limit this challenge and at the same time maintain its efficiency while you save costs in the process.
Sometimes, minor things have large effect on the performance of your air-conditioners.

Below are some minor faults and their possible solutions in air-conditioners.

FAULTS and POSSIBLE CAUSE AND SOLUTION.
1 Compressor not running
Low voltage. Be sure the voltage is enough to power the compressor, some compressors requires voltage of up to 200volts to run while some requires higher volts. Depending on the type of compressor and its capacity.
Bad capacitor. Replace the capacitor with equivalent one. You may need the help of an experienced technician to do this.
Burnt overload. In some compressors that their overload is external, replace the over load with its equivalent.
Also check for the terminal wires if anyone is burnt.
The compressor may be bad.
2 Compressor running but not cooling.
The air filters in the evaporator may be blocked by dirt and dusts. Remove and clean or wash it with clean normal water, allow it to dry before inserting it in your evaporator.
The refrigerant isn’t enough. Check for leakage, weld or tighten it before another refrigerant is added to the air-conditioner.
The evaporator fan isn’t running. Replace the fan capacitor and switch the AC on. The service of an experienced technician may be needed in doing this and number 2 above.
To be continued…
Note: Make sure you switch off and unplug your AC before doing any of the above.
I hope you find this article useful. We will be taking them gradually, one after another.

Nairaland / General / Few Tips To Get The Best Out Of Your Air-conditioners. by Refecon: 9:34am On Feb 24, 2017
FEW TIPS TO GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR AIR-CONDITIONERS.
Air-conditioners are simple appliances used in our homes, offices or wherever the atmosphere needs to be conditioned. But many avoidable mistakes make the use of air-conditioners a bit challenging to some people. Here are few mistakes that lead to constant malfunction of your air-conditioners and higher energy consumptions.

Choosing an under-sized or over-sized air-conditioner.
An undersized unit won’t cool adequately in extremely hot weather, while an oversized unit can also adversely affect your comfort. The unit may often switch on and off, without running long enough to dehumidify the room properly or cool the space uniformly. And it will consume more energy than necessary.
Always take into consideration the area to be conditioned and select a proper unit size. You can call on an experienced technician or engineer to assist you with this.

Ensure that proper sizes of wire are used for electrical connections.
Using inappropriate wire sizes will always lead to constant melting and burning out of wires and can also damage your air-conditioning system. Ensure that adequate sizes and capacities of wires, circuit-breakers sockets and plugs are used.

Lost of Refrigerant gas
Refrigerant does not finish in refrigeration or air-conditioning system except there is leakage somewhere. Make sure the leakage is traced and blocked before charging the unit with another refrigerant gas.
Note, a device called leak detector can be used in tracing the leakage.

Choosing location for the condensing unit.
For proper condensation to take place, the condensing units should be mounted and well leveled on the area with proper ventilation, so as to ensure proper circulation of air. The area should also be free from moist, debris and inflammables.
