Gombe State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has declared that it has discovered fake notes totaling the sum of N22 million during a ‘stop and search’ operation aimed at stemming criminality in the state.

While parading the suspects before newsmen in Gombe on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Shina Tairu Olukolu disclosed that the men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), intercepted the syndicates of the fake currency dealers during a stop and search operation around Billiri local government area of the state.

The Police Commissioner said that “As I have always said, crime does not pay. These suspects have been dealing in fake currency for so long but the long arms of the law have finally caught up with them today”.

He added that “I want to reiterate the resolve and commitment of the entire officers and men of the Command that we will stop at nothing to eradicate crime and criminalities in the state”.

While reacting to the allegation against them, one of the suspects, Sani Ibrahim confessed to Journalists that he became a dealer of fake naira notes to meet his basic needs due to the economic condition of the country.

Sani Ibrahim who looked remorse while talking to Journalists said, “It is not my wish to produce fake Naira notes. It was one Alhaji (names withheld for investigation purposes by the Police) who brought me into this line of illegal business last year when the economy became tough for me and I approached him for assistance”.

He further confessed that “We operate in Gombe and Nasarawa states because that is where we have people who trade in our fake currency”.

Commissioner of Police assured that full-scale investigation is going on to track down all those involved in the criminal acts pointing out that as soon as possible they will be arraigned.

Shina Olukolu also used the medium to warn politicians in the state to shun political violence as the Police will not tolerate any form of malpractices in the scheduled state congress of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) which is holding on Saturday in the state.

He advised anyone who does not have any business in the conduct of the exercise to steer clear of the venue warning that anyone caught causing a breach of the peace will not be spared by the Police.

Politics / President Buhari – Nigeria’s Agricultural Revolution Is Still On Course by reportsng: 12:23pm On May 15, 2018
President Buhari who is currently in Auyo, Jigawa State has declared that Nigeria’s agricultural revolution is real and on course.

Speaking at an event to mark the commencement of the rehabilitation and expansion of the 6,000-hectare Hadejia Valley irrigation project, President Buhari assured Nigerians that his administration would sustain the positive momentum in the sector by implementing the right policies and providing the needed financial resources for people-oriented projects.

The President, who is in Jigawa State for a two-day working visit, expressed delight that the Federal Government’s economic diversification and inclusive growth programmes were yielding positive results, particularly in key food-producing states.

He applauded the World Bank’s assistance to the project, which when completed would increase water availability for all-season farming in the State and beyond.

Also speaking, the Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu explained that works on the Phase One of the project which started in the early eighties during the administration of President Shehu Shagari and received some funding under the Petroleum Special Trust Fund had suffered frequent abandonment due to lack of funds.

Adamu said with N9.6 billion allocated under the $495 million World Bank-assisted Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project in five different irrigation locations in Nigeria, the project would be completed by 2021.

‘‘By the time the project is finished in three years, there would be about 6,000 hectares of farmland and the Jigawa State Government also plans to key into the project that will benefit over 25,000 farmers,’’ the Minister said.

In Jigawa, the President commissioned the 42-kilometre Tasheguwa-Guri Road and the 32-kilometre Abunabo-Kadira-Guri road constructed by the State government to facilitate easier movement and evacuation of farm produce.

President Buhari also commissioned the 250,000 solar- powered water supply scheme. The project is one out of nine of such projects which will add nine million litres to daily water supply in Dutse and environs.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled its governorship primary election in Ekiti state to Saturday, May 12.

A statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the new date was fixed after consultation between the party’s national NWC, aspirants and stakeholders.

“This followed consultation between the APC national working Committee (NWC), aspirants and other stakeholders.”

The party had earlier fixed the election for Friday after the last exercise ended on an inconclusive note.

However, the aspirants on Wednesday engaged the NWC for hours, making cases for why the exercise should be rescheduled.

Meanwhile, Kayode Fayemi, minister of mines and steel development; Babafemi Ojudu, an aide of President Muhammadu Buhari; and Segun Oni, APC deputy chairman (south), are among those seeking to fly the party’s flag at the governorship election.
Politics / “el-rufai Needs Psychiatric Test” – Shehu Sani Writes Hospital by reportsng: 12:13pm On May 11, 2018
Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district has called for a clinical examination of the mental state of Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

In a letter dated 7th May, which was addressed to the Chief Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, the lawmaker wondered how a governor, who is the Chief Security officer of the state could ask the people to go on riot for political reasons.

He said El-Rufai’s speech should be analysed. He expressed fears that something must have gone wrong with the governor.

Part of the letter which was made available to reads: “As a citizen and a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I am concerned that such inciting expletives and profanity could be uttered by a public servant who is also the security officer of a state.

“The open call to violence, disorder and inflammatory predisposition of a man who occupies such an exalted office is. in my humble opinion symptomatic of a paranoid personality disorder.”

“It is in the safe interest of the state and the nation, that the mental state of the governor is clinically and professionally verified”, the letter insisted.

Sani said El-Rufai was notorious for inciting groups against another in order to perpetuate evil agenda, adding that the psychiatric test should be treated with urgency.

He further stated that the outcome of the result would assist him to move a motion in the Senate that public officers and their appointees should be undergoing psychiatric and drug-related tests from time to time.

Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai had in his speech at a commissioning ceremony in Kaduna last week rained curses on three Senators from the State for rejecting the World Bank loan of $350 million he applied.

The governor described them as enemies of the state, saying, they should be stoned wherever they are seen, adding that none of them should be allowed to return to office in 2019.

The letter was copied to the Nigeria Medical Association and the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria.
Politics / Police Vow To Sue Senate For Declaring IG As Enemy Of Democracy by reportsng: 12:04pm On May 11, 2018
The police authorities have resolved to drag the Senate to the court to challenge the untoward action and resolution against the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris

The plan by the police to approach the courts came barely 48 hours after the angry senators declared Idris as unfit to hold public office

The Commissioner of Police (Legal), Force Headquarters, Mr David Igbodo, stated this on Thursday while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

“That declaration, we are going to challenge it (in court),” he said.

“We want the court to interpret whether each time the IGP is invited to appear before the National Assembly (NASS), whether he must, as a matter of fact, appear in person.”

The police boss and the National Assembly have not been on the same page since the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye over offences bordering on alleged murder and unlawful possession of firearms among several others.

Idris was first summoned on April 25, but he failed to appear, rather sent a DIG to represent him at the Senate, noting that he was on an official assignment to Bauchi with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was summoned for the second time to appear on May 2, but he again failed to honour it, delegating Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Joshak Habila, whom the Senate refused to entertain.

Igbodo explained that the IGP acted in accordance with the law by delegating the DIG to represent him in an official capacity.

“Official functions of the IGP can be performed by the DIG or the Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs). So why are they insisting that it must be the IGP to appear in person?

“What is personal about it? The facts are known to the DIG (Operations). The facts are known to all the DIGs. They are expected to brief the NASS, why are they making it personal?”

Igbodo further accused the Senators of making the issue personal, wondering why the police chief cannot assign another senior officer on official assignments.

The police had earlier absolved the IGP of blames, stressing that he is not an enemy of democracy as declared by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.

Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, had in a statement on Wednesday said the police is rather the first defender of democracy in Nigeria.

He said, “It is important to correct the impression created in the minds of the people from the Senate’s resolution that the IGP is not and will not be an enemy to democracy.”

According to Moshood, the Senate’s declaration of the Police boss as an enemy of democracy is a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting, and mischief aimed at casting aspersions on the integrity of the IGP.
