NOUN Gives Hope To Admission Seekers

With 141 public and private conventional universities, comprising 40 Federal, 40 state-owned and 61 private universities, gaining admission is still a daunting challenge for youths. The universities have not been able to cater for their educational needs.

However, Prof Vincent Tenebe, the Vice Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), said now is the time for admission seekers to embrace Open and Distance Learning (ODL) education offered by NOUN.

Unlike conventional universities, Tenebe said NOUN is not encumbered by space and can admit much more than others.

He said: “Since we cannot admit everybody in the conventional university, the Open University provides the only option for us to get all those who are qualified and are willing to acquire university education to get admission and it is a thing of joy to know that we can produce graduates who are part of the conventional system.

“Not only can conventional universities not admit more than 500,000 students, the carrying capacity of these universities is always stretched. NOUN can admit one million students, and they will get the same quality education. Any student graduating from NOUN will be graduating at par with students of other universities across Nigeria.”

Tenebe also said the university leadership has sealed an agreement with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to henceforth issue admission letters to every NOUN graduate eligible for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme after the payment of prescribed fees by NOUN.

The implication is that with effect from the next academic session, NOUN graduates below age 30 would partake in the NYSC programme.

To reach all parts of Nigeria, Tenebe said NOUN plans to have a study centre in each of the 774 local government areas of the country in the next 15 years.

“NOUN is more concerned about all Nigerians, especially those in the rural areas; those boys and girls on the streets who have necessary academic qualifications for university admission,” he said.

Why Our Course Materials Are Open On Internet – NOUN

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) yesterday explained why her academic materials are made available on the internet.

The university said its course materials were openly available on the internet to offer opportunity for people everywhere to share, use, and reuse knowledge.
The university’s Head, Open Educational Resources (OER) Dr Jane-Frances Agbu, made the remarks at the training workshop on OER organized in conjunction with the UNESCO in Abuja. She said the university was funded by the government and its educational materials made available online to enhance instructional innovation and give chance to learners to share best practices free of charge.

She said, “Independent learner who has access to the internet can access material from some of the best universities in the world. OER can promote informal learning where credential is not needed.”

NOUN Set To Increase Student’s Access To University Through Online Degrees

Prof. Vincent Tenebe, the Vice Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), on Friday said the institution was targeting more students’ access to university with its online degrees.

Tenebe said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the Presentation of the NOUN project on Open Educational Resource (OERs) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)’’.

According to him, while OERs are educational materials made available freely for reuse, revision, remixing and redistribution, MOOCs are short courses aimed at unlimited participation and open access through the web.

NOUN, being a forerunner in Open and Distance Learning, is keying into this because we know we have the capacity to contribute OERs and MOOCs to the global community.

While its mission seeks to provide cost-effective, flexible learning which adds life-long value to quality education for all who seek knowledge, it also aims to make higher education more accessible to people.

BUHARI leading with 2,032,226

That will take care of margin @ Rivers and Bayelsa.

Religion / Re: Recording Of TB Joshua Talking To Journalists (Audio) by richtubor: 5:46pm On Sep 21, 2014
Read the full transcript I transcribed from the audio and be the judge

TB Joshua- I want to thank you you very much for your patience and for and for your time. .Infact if i finish talking to you now, you will see, just pass through over 2 thousand people I'm attending to.They are from all over the world .No single Nigerian.I'm attending to them.
So I asked them to give you a copy of the cassette. There is 750 thousand which atleast, it will be 50 thousand each for fuel.To buy fuel for your car.
(Speaks to his staff)..I think you have it there, so you hand over to them. Then the cassette, they need one,one cassette.

Unknown Journalist-But man of God, we were expecting that  you would come up with an official statement .

TB Joshua-I have said it, you know I've talked to you(Is your camera recording..you know it's not necessary. It's a private issue (several confirmations its not being recorded)I

Unknown Journalist-The one in the church was not audible enough. We need something substantial for us to air.

TB Joshua-Ok but you know we have to leave the security people to do their job.I don't want to interfere .I don't want a situation where i will become a hindrance .Because the country , the ambassador of America, the UK,they have sent me a letter and i greet them.South Africa Ambassador are here,Ghana Ambassador ,they are here. They want to see their people. It is a very complicated issue.

Unknown Journalist-Sir say something,A sympathy comment

TB Joshua-No no no,it is too early now .Lets finish the whole thing.Have you been there?

All chorus -Yes

Unknown Journalist-So sir are we expecting you to call us back

TB Joshua-By the grace of God..and i will be very happy if you can help me correct some of the things that is inside the papers

Journalist=We commiserate with you the church, what we expect is if you can't give us a later day maybe you can give us an official statement outside the official one.You know when there is no information outside, people will continue to give rumours

TB Joshua-Which official statement do you want me to give

Female Journalist -We know investigation is ongoing. At the moment we know some lives have been lost, some people are in the hospital .

TB Joshua-why cant you talk of those who have been rescued. You should have started from life first

Female Journalist rephrased statement - Ok So some people have been rescued, some people unfortunately have gone .

TB Joshua - want to assure you that alot of people got rescued there. Many of them are even at the prayer now. Some people that are in the hospital are recovering.

Journalist -eh eh like so commiserate with them

Female Journalist -SO can we say you are wishing them quick recovery and you are sympathizing with them ?

TB Joshua -Can't you hear what I said in the church,I talk of the hero and Martyr. I talk like a man of God.I can't talk of death inside the church. You know people will begin to say oh I salute the martyr

Journalists ..Thank you sir,... God bless sir .yes sir..

TB Joshua-SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE NOW

Several speaking concurrently  -Just like you said..what you said .
Journalist chatter  as he exchanges pleasantries..Laughter

Jobs/Vacancies / Job search: A creative way by richtubor: 8:57pm On Aug 19, 2014
I saw this online and think it makes sense to share

22 year old Nigerian graduate Alfred Ajani has been inundated with offers of interviews after taking a radical approach to job hunting, Daily Mail reports. Alfred said he's applied for over 300 positions since getting a degree in marketing in May this year and has been unlucky. Determined to land his dream job, he decided to hand out CVs to company bosses commuting into the City of London through Waterloo Station this morning.

Alfred stood at the entrance to the busy station holding a sign stating: 'Marketing graduate (BA Hons 2:1 Coventry Uni) Ask for CV.' His direct approach received a warm response from commuters, with many stopping to discuss potential positions.

applying for jobs ever since, but it's very difficult at the moment.
'The only ones that have come up have not really been what I wanted, I'm interested in marketing and advertising.
'I realised that there are thousands of students out there using the same old methods of applying for jobs online and through recruitment agencies and so I thought I'd try something different.
'I got up early and went to the station. At first people just looked at me but after about 10 minutes people starting stopping and talking. They said they'd never seen anything like it before and were really impressed.

'One woman worked in advertising and took a CV and another guy ran back from his train and said he'd walked past but had started thinking and might have something for me.'
Alfred added: 'I've already had some phone calls and have got an int erview booked for later today. The support was great, one man even bought me a cup of tea and told me "good luck".

Alfred has worked as a waiter while studying and has taken positions as an intern in the music industry in a bid to boost his job prospects.
He asked friends to help him hand out his CVs, but thinks they were put off by the early start.

A photo of him giving his phone number to a passing commuter circulated on Twitter this morning, with website users offering their support.
After seeing the photo, one Twitter user wrote: 'Good on him for putting himself out there!! Time waits for no man!! Love it!!'
Another added: 'It's a good idea. I would've hired him into my business straight away if I saw him.'

Olympic medallist Kelly Sotherton retweeted the photo, and motivational speaker Gavin Ingham wrote: 'He will no doubt get interviews and offers whilst others sit at home moaning. Good on him.'
