Politics / Re: Video Of Abacha's Speech After Shonekan's Resignation Shared By Gumsu Abacha by roigr2012: 8:04pm On Jan 08, 2017 |
When I saw this video, I asked myself why would Gimsu want to remind us of her father at a time like this? Doesn't she know that this country is yet to recover fully from the havoc and the damage her father caused this nation financially, morally and more importantly psychologically? Maybe she is unaware of the fact that her father brought this country so low that at a point the country had to pray against him and God had to do what He did to Pharaoh when Isrealites prayed for deliverance in Egypt. Maybe she needs to be reminded that her father is a major contributor to the current state if this country because if not for her father, we will not have the second regime of Obasanjo, and if not for an Obasanjo, we will not have a Goodluck Jonathan and if not for Jonathan, we will not have a Buhari whose government is current making an economic mess of the nation as we speak. Maybe she would have understood the pains and agonies some families went through under her father's govt if Kudirat Abiola and Pa Rewane to mention but a few were given justice. Maybe if the justice system was fair to the people who lost a relative or a loved one under her father's govt. maybe she would have a little understanding of what really happened to Nigeria under him. But like every other thing about this nation, the likes of Gimsu can afford to laugh and mock this nation because they know that nothing dey happen. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Politics / Re: Subsidy Removal,the Reality And The Advantages. by roigr2012: 9:12pm On May 12, 2016 |
Firstly, nice write up. Although I am a supporter of the removal of the subsidy in theory simply because it is unsustainable on the long run. I will strongly support any protest against its removal now. Secondly, I see that you have built your case on some very faulty assumptions which are: a) You are assuming that the government would use the money gained from the subsidy to build infrastructure. I don't believe that because, from all indications, this government is yet to show us a consistent plan to develop the nation. Rather than consistency, each element of the govt has consistently contradicted each other which makes it obvious that they really don't have a blueprint for the nation internally b) Concerning payment of govt debts, am still wondering what they are doing with the stamp duties they have imposed on the nation as well as the monies recovered from various people in the last regime. c) fuel subsidy did not cause corruption in the downstream sector. Govt officials and their cronies did.. So if the govt is really serious about reducing corruption in the downstream sector, let them allow independent auditors to go through the books of the various agencies in the downstream and allow EFCC to conduct an independent investigation in the agencies. Allow found culpable should be made to face the wrath of the law. BTW what happened to the subsidy trials started under the Jonathan administration? d) About refineries, no investor in his right mind is going to invest in a refinery in Nigeria until the govt privatizes all its refineries and allows only private bodies to compete in the downstream sector like what happened in the communications industry with the telcos. Unless the govt does that, forget about building refineries because the same cabal that shut down the ones we have will make sure the news don't thrive. 1 Like |
Politics / Re: What You Need To Read Today. By Babatunde Fashola. by roigr2012: 8:46pm On Jan 26, 2016 |
While I totally agree with Fashola in principle, I believe that there is no point keeping billions of naira stashed somewhere where it is losing value by the day especially in the face of galloping inflation this country is facing but I doubt the prudence of those who will be making the decisions on how the hard earned pensions of the common man will be spent. Your excellency as the governor of Lagos state, you performed creditably better than your predecessors but despite that the cost of the projects you executed were simply outrageous and in a sane country, you will be in jail. But being the way Nigeria is, where the abnormal is normal, you win our hearts with your hardwork and performance. but the bottomline is that until our politicians can manage the state funds the way Mandela did in South Africa, PLEASE OUR PENSION ALONE.thanks 1 Like |
Politics / Re: The Nation Newspaper Returns N9 Million To NPAN by roigr2012: 2:44pm On Jan 01, 2016 |
While I commend the gesture from the Nations Newspaper, this scandal makes it clear that there is a huge problem in our media houses and possibly this is just the beginning. I find it very puzzling that an association like NPAN could fall for such a cheap trick by the Jonathan administration. As professionals, it should strike you as strange when a government issues you a cheque and the name on the cheque is that of a private company. That should trigger an alarm unless you are telling us that payment of compensation through a proxy was the norm under Jonathan's administration. |
Politics / Re: Open Letter To Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo On The Nigerian Economy And Other Issues by roigr2012: 5:12pm On Dec 25, 2015 |
Thanks OP for voicing out. Let me say this you are one of the people on this forum who is a source of hope that there is still a chance for a better Nigeria. Thanks to your contribution I don't think contributions can afford another social program in the form of a National marriage commission and I think like someone has mentioned, if there is an emphasis shift from state of origin to state of residence, I think tribalism will be greatly reduced. However that too is fraught with some challenges such as what happens to states that experience massive emigration due to harsh weather, will they lose their citizens due to a situation outside their control? I also agree that until this administration promotes TRUE federalism, wherein states own the funds they generate from their natural resources, this country will be unable to solve its main challenge of gross underdevelopment. Lastly, I am a believer that there is hope for this country yet. Nigeria will be great and it will be in out generation. Merry Christmas! |
Politics / Re: Why Oil revenue in 2016 budget is just 820 billion naira? An Explanation!! by roigr2012: 5:51pm On Dec 24, 2015 |
Thanks OP for the post. Very detailed. However concerning the 85% company tax, the oil companies don't pay the amount expected as tax because they are allowed to make certain deductions prior to declaring their profit which reduces the amount they pay eventually as tax |

@OP thanks for such an intelligent analysis. While i don't agree completely with your position because i personally believe this govt should be more aggressive in communicating its economic plans and vision for the country but thank you for putting together a piece that shows such depth. On the other side, am concerned about what nairaland is becoming. There was a time when when posts are made on this platform an intelligent discourse will ensue from it but nowadays the response one reads here are annoying. Seun should be more aggressive with wielding the big stick on those who have nothing intelligent to add to discussions here 2 Likes 1 Share |

Politics / Re: State Governments That Owe Workers - What Should Buhari Do? by roigr2012: 7:02am On May 13, 2015 |
This problem requires more than a single approach. 1) let charity begin at home: let the governors, members of the house of reps, chairmen, senators and every political office holder use their allowances and security votes to offset some of the salaries for starters. That way they would begin to realize that they are servants of the people and not lords of the state. When they live only on their basic salary, they would also appreciate the suffering their people go through to make a living 2) while their allowances may not be sufficient to settle their devices debts. Let the federal government begin to deduct the salaries of the state workers from source and pay the workers directly and use either 25% or 50% of the state allocation to pay the current debts until it is all settled no matter how long it takes. The truth is that yhe federal govt can't afford a bailout to those states now because the FG ia broke and the only reason why those workers have bot being paid is the greed of the politicians. 1 Like |

So far I am yet to see anyone mention anything new Ambode is bringing to the table. If anyone can tell us something different he would do that would be a radical change that is positive, then let's hear it. All I am hearing from apc in Lagos is continuity and I am asking what does that mean? |
Politics / Re: Jona's Loss Is Jimi Agbaje's Gain by roigr2012: 5:34pm On Apr 02, 2015 |
PelumiOrungbe:Thanks for your response. I like the gentleman manner you have responded. However, I have this is response. The fact is I am yet to see Ambode articulate anything bold and different. When Fashola was contesting for the position of governor in 2007, it was obvious he had a vision and a plan but so far all Ambode has to offer is continuity and the question is "what exactly does continuity mean?". And yours sincerely it would be useless if the govt at the center is progressive while the one at the state level is visionless. |
Politics / Re: Jona's Loss Is Jimi Agbaje's Gain by roigr2012: 7:49am On Apr 02, 2015 |
tundemogba12: Really? Lagos remains the most developed state in Nigeria till date and that's despite the fact that it has remained in opposition since 1958 when the first parliament was inaugurated in this country. I strongly believe that remaining in opposition has been greatly benficial to Lagos and I don't see any reason why it should not remain that way. Without doubt, lagos helped apc to create an alternative vision to what was happening at the center and when Nigerians decided to vote, it was easy to vote for change because they can see it. If Lagos is to go with the federal, i fear that the backwardness and lack of development we see in other states would creep into this state because that has been the fate of other states all through time. A case for study is Oyo state a one time capital of the western region. With all the potential Oyo state had, it has been majorly under optimized because of its flirting with the central. |

The next few weeks is no doubt going to be very interesting especially in Lagos. Will the wind go out of pdp's sail or would it be an invigorating factor to ensure that they get something. As much as apcmaynotlikwir apc may not lyk it. Tinubu is beginning to weary many lagosians and that may be the soft belly for apc in lagos. While lagosians love Fashola, many realize that Ambode is Tinubu's stooge and would not be a man of his own when he gets to alausa. Lagosians love Fashola because he stood up to Tinubu to an extent but Ambode cannot and would not stand up to Tinubu. In a funny way, Ambode would likely be like a jona who was a president only in name. I also believe many lagosians know this is their opportunity to throw away the stranglehood Tinubu has over the state. Purely as an observer, i think ig it were not for the Bode George factor, this election really favors Jimi Agbaje and personally i rhink if he had stayed with labor party, he would win this election. However, i also think jimi can stand up to bode george after he gets to alausa but i don't see Ambode standing upa at all to jagaban. |

While my tots may be unpopular, lagos going the way of the opposition would help Nigeria as a whole. Imagine a reversal of position. Lagos to pdp and the federal goes to apc? The political space would be more competitive and a multi-party state will be sustained. A winner-takes-all does not augur well for our democracy. We need a vibrant opposition for thos country to grow. 4 Likes |
Politics / Jona's Loss Is Jimi Agbaje's Gain by roigr2012: 4:34am On Apr 02, 2015 |
first of all, let me state this: I am not a card carrying member of pdp neither am i a member of any political party. My interest in Lagos politics is that I am a Nigerian citizen based in Lagos who is aware of Lagos political history. Now to the subject at hand. On the surface, many people would think pdp is finished in Lagos due to the fact that despite the effort of president jona to win the state, he failed and also that lahos since 1999 has always belonged to apc (then AD) however a closef look at what happened shows that as far as the gubernatorial race is concerned, it can still go either way for the following reasons: 1) The main reason president jona lost was because of the under performance of his administration. Nothong more nothing less. If he had performed well, he would have likely won lagos. Lagosians have proven again that they are very intelligent and are politically aware. 2) A closer look at the results shows that the margin between apc and pdp is not wide. Based on this, since the election has been rated one of the best Nigeria has ever had, it stands to reason that pdp stands a good chance if only they put the defeat behind them and work harder on winning the forthcoming elections. 3) The number of those who voted is quite low compared to the number of people who collected PVCs wbich means there are a lot of Lagosians who are either undecided or are not motivated enough to vote during the last elections. If jimi can work on getting these people to vote for him he would win this election. 4) The truth is lot of people are getting frustrated by Tinubu stranglehood on alausa. The LCC debacle, the use of ABC to continue to loot the treasury of lagos and the fact that everyone knows that Tinubu is trying to pay back Ambode for his loyalty with the office of governor and not that Ambode is competent on his own right coupled with the fact that lagosians are aware that Ambode wasn't even fashola's choice, and fashola is highly respected in lagos, makes lagosians more sympathetic to Jimi than Ambode. However Jimi has a onerous task of converting sympathy into votes and what i would sugest as a political observer is: 1) Articulate your plans clearly. Telling us to read your manifesto is not enough. Let us know in exact words what would make you different from the current administration. 2) Study the last elections and look at areas where the turnout is low vis a vis the number of PVCs collected and get your message across to those people. Like i said earlier, it was a lot of lagosians are not motivated enough to vote so get your ideas acriss to these people and motivate them to vote for you. Finally, it takes someone with balls to press on but i think Jimi has got what it takes to win. Eko o ni baje o 3 Likes |

I wonder what else Mohammed Abacha wants. Has he forgotten the Universities and books donated by PTF to northern schools and universities while Buhari was the Chairman of that agency. Let us hear word and stop trying to "darken counsel with words without knowledge". 3 Likes |
