Business / Dealers Demand N850/litre Diesel As Dangote, Marketers Meet by Sayvick(m): 5:17am On Apr 10
Dealers demand N850/litre diesel as Dangote, marketers meet

As price is fixed at N1,225 by the company and import landing cost is put at N1,250

Oil marketers have called for a downward review in the pump price of the Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, being produced by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery to between N700 and N850/litre, as operators plan to meet managers of the refinery next week.

The largest downstream marketing association, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, which made the call in an interview with The PUNCH, said the N1,225/litre diesel price from the indigenous refinery was high because the commodity was produced in Nigeria and not imported.

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria also called for a reduction in the price of Dangote diesel.

The groups called for the intervention of the Federal Government and urged the managers of the refinery to consider the high cost of logistics required to transport the product from Lagos where the refinery is located.

The oil marketers pointed out that the product is being landed in Nigeria by some importers at N1,250/litre following the appreciation of the naira against the dollar, adding that this should be another reason why the Dangote refinery that produces diesel in Nigeria should cut down its price.

According to the oil marketers, diesel produced at the Dangote refinery has no vessel cost, import charges, and other costs associated with the costs associated with the importation of the commodity into Nigeria.

This came as it was gathered that the marketers under the aegis of IPMAN and Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, and PETROAN held separate meetings on Monday to deliberate on the pricing of petroleum products from the refinery, as well as other issues.

The PUNCH had reported on April 3, 2024, that the $20bn refinery started pumping out diesel to the domestic market the previous Wednesday (March 27, 2024).

The report stated that the refinery sold a minimum of one million litres to each registered oil marketer that got the product from the plant since it commenced diesel sale.

Officials of the multi-billion dollar plant and oil dealers had confirmed that the product was dispensed to marketers at between N1,225/litre and N1,300/litre depending on the volume of purchase.

Reacting to the cost of the commodity during an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the National Public Relations Officer, IPMAN, Chief Chinedu Ukadike, commended the refinery for the commencement in the release of refined products.

He, however, urged the managers of the plant to review the cost of the product downward, providing reasons why the price of Dangote diesel should be cheaper than what was imported.

Ukadike said, “During the construction of the Dangote refinery, we supported and welcomed it. Also, it was our prayers that an indigenous refinery be opened so that it will limit the expenses of logistics in terms of importation, clearing, and other activities associated with bringing products into the country.

“These are some of the hurdles that necessitated the high cost of AGO or diesel being imported into Nigeria. So now that a private refinery with a very high capacity has started producing petroleum products here in Nigeria, we would have appreciated that its products being sold to Nigerians will be cheaper than the landing cost of imported products.

“The dollar is currently about N1,270 to N1,290 and it is coming down. So if the dollar is a determinant factor in terms of the importation of petroleum products and diesel is sold by those companies that imported at N1,300/$, I believe that Dangote refinery should not measure the price of its diesel with the parameter of the forex.”

The IPMAN PRO stated that forex should not be the benchmark for the price of Dangote refinery’s diesel.

“Also, some other expenses on the cost of diesel produced by the refinery have been waived. So those expenses should reflect on the price of the product. The refinery is in Lagos, so there is no vessel voyage cost and this should be deducted from the price Dangote is giving us.

“Other marketers who imported their products are landing it at between N1,200 and N1,250/litre since the drop in forex. So Dangote should be giving us his product at around N700 to N850/litre since he is producing it here.

“When we buy at that price, it will further strengthen the naira, minimise profiteering and reduce the cost of goods and services that are transported using diesel. If you minus the cost spent on vessels, importation charges, and the cost of foreign exchange to some extent, the price of diesel will drop,” Ukadike stated.

He said oil marketers would also submit their price request to the Dangote refinery next week, adding that IPMAN would seek the intervention of the Federal Government on the matter.

“We are trying to seek a meeting with the refinery’s commercial department. I just came out of a meeting to speak with you, where we are discussing how to be able to persuade them to review their prices and also ask the government to intervene,” he said.

When asked to state when the association would meet with the refinery, Ukadike replied. “By next week we should get an appointment. That should be after the Sallah.”

The PUNCH in its story on April 3, 2024, reported that some members of IPMAN had started purchasing the product from the refinery at the N1,225/litre price, though the association had stated that it would seek its price from the managers of the refinery.

“They started pumping out diesel to marketers last week. They also promised to sell aviation fuel soon. Some of my members confirmed this to me after making the purchase,” the National President, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, had told our correspondent last week.

He added, “So some of our marketers have started getting the product, but as an association, we have not got the product yet, because we want to get the actual rate that it will be sold to us when we buy in bulk. However, they have started selling diesel because some of our marketers have started buying.

“They are selling at N1,225/litre and the minimum volume they are giving is one million litres per marketer. Also, they assured us that they will release more products, but for now this (diesel) is what they are starting with. So we are expecting them to release PMS anytime from now.”

Maigandi had said the move by Dangote would definitely lead to a crash in diesel price, as the commodity rose to a high of about N1,700/litre recently.

“The price of diesel is going to fall because of the release of products from Dangote refinery. It is already coming down in Lagos,” Maigandi stated.

Another oil marketer, who is the Chief Executive, AF Ralph Oil and Gas Ventures, Dr Ralph Arokoyo, had also confirmed that the refinery started the sale of diesel to dealers, adding that the plant started dispensing the product about two weeks ago.

Asked if the Dangote refinery had started supplying diesel to the market, Arokoyo replied, “Yes they have started. They started diesel sales last Wednesday and they have sold to many marketers including members of IPMAN and MEMAN (Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria), as well as other private registered independent dealers.”

PETROAN reacts
The President, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Billis Gillis-Harry, also stated on Monday that the cost of diesel from the Dangote refinery should be reduced.

He said, “PETROAN has an agreement with Dangote to supply to us at N1,200, but we will still request a downward review. We have over 19,000 members and over 6,800 people are active and ready to do business. So we need to talk about so many issues.

“First of all, the logistics from Lagos to Port Harcourt, Calabar, Warri, Zamfara, and other locations is not very easy. So those in Lagos can take the N1,200/litre price because their cost of logistics is low, but this is not so for dealers outside Lagos.

“So we will certainly still engage with them on how prices will come down. However, the good news is that they have rolled out products and we salute and congratulate them, especially the Executive Director, Commercial, Mr Rabiu Umar, for his courage in making sure Nigeria is wet with refined products.”

Gillis-Harry, however, stated that the refinery would have to recoup the funds used in constructing it, as several billions of dollars were borrowed to develop the plant.

“The refinery has collected billions of dollars as loans to put itself up. It must start to work to pay back these loans. And the only way to get back this money is by producing and selling, as well as exporting.

“Now he has started with domestic sales. So organisations like ours will have to sit down with them and work out the details and this will enable us to know exactly what their cost elements are. We want to sell and they want to produce,” he stated.

The PETROAN president said his association would not want to speak on the proposed cost of petrol that should come from the Dangote refinery until the plant starts producing the commodity for the domestic market.

“You can’t even talk about price when they’ve not started producing. Yes, they have discussed with PETROAN that they would produce PMS, but they have not started producing,” he said.

When told that the refinery was working to release PMS in May, Gillis-Harry said, “They’ve not started producing. So we won’t work on projections. Let them produce first and we will then know what their input, output, and pricing are. That is the only time we can talk about what prices they should sell.

“Dangote refinery has informed PETROAN that they will produce PMS but we await their production, and then we will know the inputs of their production before we talk about the pricing. We can’t tell them what to sell now.”

Dangote officials mum
Officials of the multibillion-dollar refinery decided to stay mute despite several attempts to get their input on the matter.

However, a senior official at the Dangote refinery confirmed last week that the plant had started the sale of diesel to marketers, as the source noted that Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, would soon be released to the market.

“The product (diesel) is everywhere and they (marketers) are accessing it with ease. The product has been on sale to marketers since last week and the transactions have been better.

“The price of the product in various locations of the country will come down, and it is already coming down in many parts of Lagos since we started releasing products to marketers,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation to speak on the matter, had stated.

The Dangote refinery has faced a series of hurdles as it strives to release refined products into the market after it was officially inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari in May last year.

On February 8, 2024, The PUNCH reported that indications emerged that lingering regulatory approvals stalled Dangote Petrochemical Refinery’s plan to release aviation fuel (Jet A1) and diesel for sale in the Nigerian market in January.

The report stated that weeks after the January 31 timeline set by the management of Africa’s largest refinery to begin the sale of its petroleum product in the local market, the refinery was still battling to cross the hurdles of the several layers of regulatory approvals.

It stated that the development came after the refinery began the production of refined petroleum products at the expansive facility.

On January 12, 2024, Dangote refinery announced that it had commenced the production of Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, and aviation fuel or JetA1.

Aliko Dangote, in a statement issued by his firm at the time, thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support, encouragement, and thoughtful advice towards the actualisation of the project.

Dangote also thanked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NMDPRA, and Nigerians for their support and belief in the historic project, as he revealed that the facility would pump out diesel and aviation fuel in January, subject to regulatory approvals.

He said, “We thank President Bola Tinubu for his support and for making our dream come true. This production, as witnessed today, would not have been possible without his visionary leadership and prompt attention to detail.

“His intervention at various stages cleared all impediments thereby accelerating the actualisation of the project. We also thank the NNPC, NUPRC, and NMDPRA for their support. These organisations have been our dependable partners in this historic journey.

“We also thank Nigerians for their belief and support in this project. We have started the production of diesel and aviation fuel, and the products will be in the market within this month once we receive regulatory approvals.”

The refinery, Africa’s largest with a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, was built on a peninsula on the outskirts of the commercial capital Lagos.

Nigeria has for years relied on expensive imports for nearly all the fuel it consumes but the $20bn refinery is set to turn it into a net exporter of fuel to other West African countries, in a huge potential shift of power and profit dynamics in the industry.

Dangote exports products
The commencement of diesel sale in Nigeria by the plant is not its first refined products sale, as The PUNCH reported in February that the refinery issued tenders to sell two fuel cargoes for export.

This was the first from the new refinery, as the report stated that this was confirmed by trading sources with knowledge of the matter who spoke to Reuters at the time.

Nigeria has for years relied on expensive imports for nearly all the fuel it consumes but the $20bn refinery is set to turn it into a net exporter of fuel to other West African countries, in a huge potential shift of power and profit dynamics in the industry

Reuters had stated in its report that Dangote declined its request for comment. The oil firm also remained mute to several inquiries by The PUNCH at the time.

The report stated that the first cargo was 65,000 metric tonnes of low-sulphur straight-run fuel oil, which Dangote awarded to Trafigura, which was due to load at the end of February, three of the sources said, according to Reuters, as it added that Trafigura declined to comment at the time.

At least one refiner said they had been offered the cargo by Trafigura without elaborating further.

The second tender was for about 60,000 tonnes of naphtha, three other sources had stated. Two of them added that the tender closed on February 15. Loading details were not immediately available at the time.

Sources had also told Reuters that the refinery was preparing to deliver its first fuel cargoes to the domestic market within weeks.

The two fuels on offer were typical products of running light sweet crude through a crude distillation unit in a refinery without further upgrading capacity.

The refiner began buying crude in December last year and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has been the main supplier.

Dangote has also purchased some US oil and reportedly received two million barrels of US WTI Midland in early March, according to LSEG and Kpler ship tracking.

Investment / President Tinubu Championing The Course Of Nigerian Youth - Stay Positive -phot by Sayvick(m): 10:00pm On Mar 03
In spite of the negative perception of the President by majority of people in the country, he is busy championing the course of the Nation, projecting the youths in the best positive image ever, unlike his predecessors.

In Qatar, the President said inter alia:-
"President Bola Tinubu on Sunday in Doha said Nigerian youths are worth every investment as they are educated, reliable and proactive.

He argued that a few bad eggs cannot be a yardstick for gauging the capacity of the majority who, he said, are “ready to be unleashed for the mutual benefit of both nations.”

Tinubu said these when he and the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, witnessed the signing of seven landmark agreements between both nations after closed-door talks at the Presidential Palace in Doha.

The seven agreements signed are a cooperation agreement in the field of education; regulation of employment of workers with the Government of Qatar; establishment of a joint business council between the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture; in addition to a cooperation agreement in the field of youths and sports.

The other agreements are cooperation in the field of tourism and business events and a memorandum of understanding combating illicit trade in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The documents were signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and relevant officials in the Government of the State of Qatar, Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education; Dr. Ahmad Hassen Al-Hammadi, Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Sheikh Khalifa Bin Jassim Al Thani, Chairman of Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Abdullah bin Khalaf bin Hattab Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed this in a statement he signed Sunday titled ‘President Tinubu welcomes multi-sectoral agreements with Qatar: Set to receive Qatar’s investment team in Abuja.’

Before the signing ceremony, President Tinubu assured his host of Nigeria’s preparedness to welcome investors into the country, noting the ongoing reforms that favour innovation, return on investments, and multiculturalism.

Tinubu said, “Our greatest strength is our people. Our strength lies in the capacity of Nigerian youths. They have energy, talent, and self-belief. They are quality partners for the Qatari industry.

“They are educated and reliable, and they are proactively seeking to add value wherever they are. A few cannot give a bad name to the many. Nigerian youths are ready to be unleashed for the mutual benefit of both nations.”

I strongly believe, he is set on a path to follow regardless of several distractions and in no distance time, he surely will replicate Lagos in Nigeria, let's stay positive.

Crime / Navy Intercepts Ghanaian Vessel With Stolen Oil, Arrests 13 (Pictures) by Sayvick(m): 11:31am On Mar 03
The Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft Operation Delta Sanity, has arrested a Ghana-owned motor tanker, SWEET MIRI involved in suspected crude oil theft.

The vessel was arrested 174 nautical miles off the coast of Nigeria, approximately 320 kilometres, heading to Benin Republic.

According to a statement on Saturday by the NNS Base Information Officer, Lieutenant H Ibrahim, the motor tanker, SWEET MIRI vessel had 13 crew; one Ghanaian and 12 Nigerians, onboard at the time of arrest.

The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MB Hassan, was quoted in the statement, as saying that the vessel was carrying about two million litres of the suspected product without approval and had switched off its Automatic Identification System to avoid detection on February 25, 2024.

Hassan also stated that the infraction necessitated the deployment of Ship ABA to investigate the vessel which was later found carrying products suspected to be crude oil, and NNS Sokoto to double up the search and interdict the vessel.

The statement read, “The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT under the strategic leadership of Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga who is also the Maritime Component Commander Operation AWATSE, arrested a vessel, Motor Tanker SWEET MIRI suspected to have been involved in crude oil theft. The vessel had 13 crew, one Ghanaian and 12 Nigerians, onboard at the time of arrest.

“The MT vessel has been a vessel of interest to the Nigerian Navy and she was arrested 174 nautical miles off the coast of Nigeria, approximately 320 kilometres, heading to the Benin Republic.

“On February 25, 2024, the vessel was observed to have switched off its Automatic Identification System to avoid detection. This necessitated the deployment of the Nigerian Navy Ship ABA to investigate the vessel. Subsequently, she was found carrying products suspected to be crude oil. Thereafter, NNS SOKOTO was deployed to double up the search and interdict the vessel. On arrival, it was discovered that she was carrying about two million litres of the suspected product without approval.”

The FOC further disclosed that the vessel is owned by a Ghanaian and registered in Ghana, adding that the vessel is open to any agency that wants to get samples for analysis to confirm the culpability of the vessel.
“In line with the directive of Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, the vessel owned by a Ghanaian and registered in Ghana by a Ghanaian company is opened for other agencies to come and take samples and carry out their independent investigations to find out the culpability of the vessel.”

In the same vein, while giving an update on the earlier arrested Motor Tanker VINNALARIS, the FOC said that the CNS has instructed that the investigations of all arrested vessels should be conducted beyond the level of the crew to uncover the kingpins.

He also appreciated the efforts of the Department of State Services in assisting the Nigerian Navy in conducting investigations when matters of crude oil theft are brought to them.

Recently, Nigeria has experienced numerous incidents of oil theft and illegal refinery operations nationwide.

Health / Fixing Artificial Lashes In Filthy Environment Can Cause Eye Infection – Experts by Sayvick(m): 7:53am On Feb 25
Leading ophthalmologists and eye specialists have warned that fixing artificial eyelashes improperly and under unhygienic conditions could lead to eye infections.

The experts, in separate interviews with PUNCH Healthwise, noted that allergies, swelling of the eyelids, redness and dryness of the eyes are some infections and diseases that could be caused by the procedure.

They, however, noted that only a few individuals who undergo the procedure in professional eye cosmetics and under hygienic conditions risk getting eye infections.
Recently, some ophthalmologists hinted at a gradual increase in eye diseases due to the increased usage of artificial lashes.

An online healthcare information website, WebMD, described artificial eyelashes, also called false lashes, as synthetic lashes attached to the eyelid just above the natural lashes with temporary glue.

It added that the procedure is designed to make the eyes stand out or enhance the facial look.

The experts and WebMD pointed out those artificial lashes might not cause damage if applied properly and under hygienic conditions but noted that wearing them regularly and without caution could trigger allergies, irritation and eye injury.

Complications from the procedure due to stimulation of the eyelids were listed to include allergic reaction to the glue used, loss of natural lashes, redness, infection and irritation, as well as swollen and drooping eyelids.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, dry eyes are the second-highest infection suffered by nearly 16 million people in the country.

It stated that each year, about a million eye infections are recorded in hospitals.
Although there is no national data on the burden of eye diseases in Nigeria, a study conducted on over 1,448 patients in Northern Nigeria revealed that infective and allergic conjunctivitis were the most common eye diseases reported in hospitals.

Meanwhile, refractive errors, glaucoma and cataracts were other common eye diseases highlighted.

Speaking on the issue, a Professor of Optometry at the Abia State University, Uturu, Okezie Ahuama, said that eyelash is meant to naturally protect the eyes from airborne irritants.

He, however, noted that artificial eyelashes are for beauty and cosmetic purposes, and are unconnected to the natural eyelid tissue and, therefore, cannot protect the eyes from external agents.

He added that dry eye and ocular allergies are some diseases and infections that might result from the use of artificial eyelashes.

The don stated, “From simple scientific logic, the natural eyelash protects against the ocular surface from airborne irritants, including infective agents by acting as a biologically active mechanical barrier. By biologically active, I mean that these natural eyelashes have sensory inputs that make them active in eliciting a reflex mechanical closure of the eyelids before particles enter the eye (tactile and menace reflex blinking).

“If the particles succeed in lodging on the ocular surface, the reflex blinking is one other form of protection of the ocular surface by which there is increased secretion of tears containing antibacterial proteins (biological protection).”

The optometrist further warned that the glues used to attach the eyelashes could prevent the natural eyelid from protecting the eyes.
Ahuama added, “Again, the use of glues to attach these eyelashes on the eyelid may create a barrier between the living cells of the eyelid margin and the eyelash itself, diminishing the natural protection.

The increased weight of artificial eyelash make-up against the light weight of the natural eyelash may slow the fast blinking process required in tactile and menace reflex blinking.”
The don highlighted dry eye, slow evaporation of tears and reduced blinking reflex as conditions that could occur with prolonged use of artificial lashes.

“Dry eye and increased tear film evaporation might occur. The blinking reflex may be reduced because of longer and denser eyelashes that slow the naturally fast mechanical blinking reflex that coats the eye surface with all components of the protective tear film.

“Also, the ocular surface allergies and infections may increase because a longer eyelash may increase airflow, which causes shear stress on the eye surface, increasing deposition of particles and contaminants and the evaporation of tear film. The visual acuity may be affected as well if the number of blinks is reduced and the retractor and protractor (eye muscles that open and close the eyelids) may have to act more forcefully to maintain their normal function,” the Optometrist said.
On her part, a professor of Ophthalmology at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Bola Adekoya, said the use of artificial eyelashes is used to enhance facial beauty and the practice is not new.

The don also noted that if the procedure is done correctly under hygienic conditions, it poses no threat to the user.

The Ophthalmologist added, “As with any other procedure done on other parts of the body, if not done correctly, there might be issues. Even if done correctly, if there is an allergic reaction to the materials used, it can create problems.

“The issue might range from mild irritation to something that could be potentially serious. If the fixing is not correctly or hygienically done, the individual can feel a foreign body sensation in the eyes, irritation, redness, watering and conjunctivitis.

“If there is an acute allergic reaction to the glue used to stick the artificial eyelash to the natural eyelash margin, it can cause cellulitis (a bacterial infection of the skin around the eye that causes redness and swelling) of the eyelid margin. They can also cause a secondary infection of the eyelid.”

Adekoya asserted that complications or side effects from the procedure could be treated at any eye hospital, saying, “Majority of the side effects are mild but there can be some serious infection of the eyelid if proper care is not taken. This could turn into something very serious.

“At the start of any irritation, it is better to remove any offending agent and seek medical attention to ensure that there is nothing in the eye. If one feels a foreign body within the eye, one has to be sure that the foreign body does not remain on the eyeball where it could become something else that could result in the infection of the eyeball.”

The Ophthalmologist further noted that if the procedure is well done, there could be no major impact on the eyes.
The don urged women that fix artificial eyelashes to ensure it is done by licensed professionals under sanitary conditions and that they should discontinue if there is an acute allergic reaction.

Sports / I Trust Uzoho - Peseiro by Sayvick(m): 12:36pm On Feb 02
Following speculations over the fitness of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for Nigeria’s quarter-final clash against Angola in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, coach Jose Peseiro has expressed faith in the ability of Francis Uzoho between the sticks on Friday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nwabali’s availability for the Angola clash has been in doubt due to an injury he sustained during the 1-0 win over Cameroon in the round of 16 last Saturday.

However, he only missed one training session on Monday and was said to be in training on Tuesday and Wednesday which were used to assess his fitness.

Ahead of today’s game, Peseiro addressed the goalkeeper’s situation, stating that his availability was still subject to a late fitness test during the team’s last training session for the game on Thursday.

“We have to wait for a late fitness test today (Thursday), if he is not ready, I have other goalkeepers (Uzoho and Ojo). I believe and trust all my goalkeepers, if Nwabali is not fit, I trust Uzoho,” Peseiro said at the pre-match conference on Thursday.

Nwabali’s fitness has created anxiety among Nigerian fans who are still expecting the new number one to return to action against Angola today.

“At the mention of Uzoho’s name, every Nigerian gets scared,” a fan Sholumade Wale said.

Another fan, Dare Johnson, also queried the trust of the Portuguese coach in the embattled goalkeeper.

“Why do you always say you trust Uzoho? Have you considered what we think about him, if we trust Uzoho?”

Nwabali has been in goal for all of Nigeria’s four games at the 2023 AFCON including Nigeria’s pre-tournament friendly against Guinea in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.

He has conceded just once in four appearances at the AFCON and three times in all his five games for the country, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Nigeria will take on Angola at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan at 6pm Nigerian time today.

The physicians who gave detailed reasons couples get stuck during sex which they noted was a medical condition, said there was no scientific evidence to show that the occurrence was as a result of a charm or spell.

According to the experts, getting stuck during intercourse is a medical condition known as penis captivus and has nothing to do with charm.

The senior health practitioners explained that Penis captivus is an occurrence during sexual intercourse when the muscles in the vagina clamp down on the penis more firmly than usual, making it harder (or impossible) to remove the penis from the vagina.

Also, an India’s dedicated sexual wellness clinic, Allo Health, says Penis captivus is a rare and unusual sexual condition that occurs when the muscles in the vaginal wall involuntarily contract and clamp down on the penis during intercourse.

The clinic notes when this happens, the penis gets stuck in the vagina and cannot be withdrawn, saying that this condition can be a frightening and uncomfortable experience, leaving both partners feeling embarrassed and helpless.

Though the causes of penis captivus are not fully understood, the clinic added that some theories suggest that the condition could occur due to excessive contraction of the vaginal muscles during an orgasm or an accidental clamping down on the penis during sex.

Experts in the field of urology and sexology who spoke exclusively with PUNCH Healthwise in different interviews maintained that it was very possible for a penis to get stuck inside a vagina during intercourse.

They urged those affected to seek help from experts as any effort to forcefully remove the penis will not only hurt them deeply but could lead to loss of lives.

The physicians regretted that the occurrence was often misinterpreted to be a trap or punishment meted out to an unfaithful wife by her husband or the gods, thereby denying those affected access to good and timely interventions.

A Consultant Family Physician at Anambra State Ministry of Health, Awka, Dr Chidumeje Okafor, who successfully separated a couple that were stuck in the state recently, speaks on the condition and how to treat such conditions.

Okafor, who also works at Iyi-Enu Teaching Hospital Ogidi, said, “Last week, a man (32) and a lady (25) were brought to the hospital in a Sienna bus and were tied together with a wrapper. They were in a sex position called spooning. The man was taking her from behind before the muscle spasm occurred.

“Muscle spasms occur when muscle involuntarily and forcibly contracts uncontrollably and can’t relax. That morning, as they were having sex, the lady achieved orgasm and sex became painful for them.

“Unfortunately, the man couldn’t withdraw his penis from the lady’s vagina when he started feeling the pains. They called a pastor who told them that the lady was married to a mermaid and it was the mermaid that used magun on her.

“Hearing that, I quickly admitted them and gave the lady a dose of anesthesia and some pain relievers. I also gave it to the man. After that, I started calming the lady down and eventually, I separated them. They were discharged almost immediately. They were victims of penis captivus.”

He continued, “Penis captivus occurs when the muscles of vagina clamp down severely on the penis, preventing the man from withdrawing. This situation is common to people with a history of vaginismus.

“This is the body’s automatic reaction to the fear of some or all types of vaginal penetration. Whenever penetration is attempted, your vaginal muscles tighten up on their own. You have no control over it.

“There are two types of vaginismus that affect young or elderly people. One affects very religious people who have never had any vagina penetration before. The other may be those who have had penetration and later stopped due to an unpleasant experience.
“Vaginismus is the risk factor for penis captivus, while vaginitis, sexual assault, infections, and endometriosis are risk factors for vaginismus.

“The muscles that are implicated in this are mostly the muscle of pelvic floor called the levator ani muscle which provides support to the pelvic visceral structures and plays an important role in urinary voiding, defecation and sexual function.”

The physician added, “These muscles are puborectalis, pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus. They are like diaphragms of the pelvic floor. The diaphragm prevents the chest organs, lungs and the heart, from falling into the abdomen. These three muscles also prevent organs of the pelvic from falling.

“So in penis captivus, these muscles contract intensely thereby preventing the penis from pulling out. When this happens, it’s advised that you don’t panic or allow anxiety to set in. Don’t be afraid, the more you try to forcefully remove it, the more it holds you down and you end up injuring yourselves. Call for help.”

Also, a Professor of Surgery and Consultant Urologist at the University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State, Onyeanunam Ekeke, affirmed that “the condition is medical and not magun as people would say, especially the Yorubas, urging the victims to seek medical attention to save their lives.

“Penis captivus is an involuntary muscle spasm, painful contractions and tightening of the muscles wall of vagina, preventing any form of penetration, whether finger, penis or anything. These muscles contract intensely thereby preventing the penis from pulling out.”

He, however, believes that with the new cases being recorded in recent times, penis captivus would gain wide publicity to stimulate research on the topic to end the backlash that comes with it.

In a 2015 article published in European Scientific Journal which centered on magun, the authors said generically, the word magun is a Yoruba word that is fast enjoying global semantic attention particularly as it denotes mysterious phenomena by which it has generated several questions.

“Researchers have attempted to define magun as a mystical-sexual enchantment or embargo placed on a woman (usually by her husband) to check her infidelity or as a deterrent to many (men) who otherwise could have been reckless in their sexual life.

“While it appears easier to answer the question of definition or what magun is, the workings of this phenomenon have continued to spawn puzzles and inquisitiveness thus, it generates more questions and questionings”, the authors said.

With the way politicians fight for office and celebrate victory, it's obvious political office is an avenue to loot and not to serve.

KennisMusic is a legendary and most successful music label in the late 90s running through the 2000s that played a very legendary role in building the music industry. Kennis music was formed and owned by Kenny keke Ogungbe and Dayo "D1". At the time, foreign music reigned supreme in clubs and on radios. Kennis music was among the first to start the revolution that will make Africans start loving their own music more. To achieve this, they started a 1hr program then called "Prime time Jams" where they played mostly African music which they co-hosted with ID Ogungbe. ID Ogungbe did the segement of the program called ID in the Street which got feedbacks from the streets. They also used the opportunity to play their own signed artistes. In no time they achieved massive success with Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem and later 2face. They later expanded to Ghana and signed VIP whom they achieved another monumental success with. I celebrate their contribution. Their hardwork and success inspired a lot of other Record labels and Artistes into music today. ©️LUXXY

So, today Multichoice owners of DSTV announced that the Company won't be showing matches from AFCON. As a Nation, Nigeria, DSTV has become the eye of the Nation, as big as we are, blackout from Multichoice is blackout in Nigeria. Sad!

No Institution can invest on a large scale in the Media, big enough to guarantee our access to information, breaking this long-term monopoly? Too bad.
