This prompted David Cameron to tweet on Tuesday: "It's irresponsible of Facebook to post beheading videos, especially without a warning. They must explain their actions to worried parents." Stephen Balkam, the chief executive of the Family Online Safety Institute (Fosi) charity - who sits on the network's Safety Advisory Board - said he was "unhappy" at the move, which he had not been told about in advance. Nairaland / General / Finally, blackberry Messenger On Apples's Ios, Android But....... by SCubedstudios1: 7:48am On Oct 22, 2013 |
http:///16s2Sqr BBM finally hits Andriod and Apple’s iOS , according to BlackBerry's blog yesterday, the application is set to go live . BBM fans who signed up on the official site will be able to use the application immediately. However, if you did not sign you would have to wait in line to download and use the application. BlackBerry said 6 million people signed up for information on BBM.com. "If you didn't sign up in advance, don't worry -- we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible," the blog said. Even as BlackBerry institutes a phased roll out, the process of signing on still hasn't been smooth. Some people have encountered problems setting up the service, with the problem attributed to "temporary server error." If, you are encountering hitches trying to download the app, Do not worry, you would eventually be able to download it. Although, the market taste for Blackberry has gone sour, the Blackberry Messenger is still a favorite for most people; this would be a phasing out for Blackberry as a franchise but a push for BBM. NYSC / The Dearth Of Nysc; A Corper's Tale by SCubedstudios1: 4:39pm On Oct 21, 2013 |
The national youth corps started in 1973 with the aim of bringing and fostering unity in the country and also helping youths appreciate other ethnic groups. The program entails a 3 weeks orientation exercise (students are camped and drilled, after they which they undertake a ‘’pass out’’ exercise from camp) and eventually posted to various locations within the state they were posted to. Over the years the program has been reviewed by the federal government, currently corps members are posted only to government institutions and private institutions in areas of health and education. ‘Allowee ‘has been reviewed as well, corps members receive N19, 800 monthly. In recent times, it is of note that, the experience of various corps members has gone from exciting, adventurous, and eventful to being just a compulsory exercise. As a corp member currently serving Nigeria, I say it from the perspective of someone living the ‘compulsory’ experience. It is an exercise that graduates dread and only look forward to, because it symbolizes a change in their status of just being a graduate to being an employable graduate in Nigeria. What are the issues that have brought rot to the once celebrated program? The main reason is that, the aims on which NYSC was initially designed and implemented is defeated. It is no news that the crisis in different parts of the country has increased the risk of serving in a ‘strange place’. Parents, guardians and the general public are concerned about the security of their wards. The number of corps members that have died as a result of violence, ethnic crisis, lynching, bad environmental conditions, road accidents, armed robbery ,assassination and worst of all ‘community victimization ‘ is alarming. It is a more disheartening situation because the victimization, pains and deaths are avoidable. Moreover, what is the essence of the program now? Is the program still running on the aims it was first designed and implemented? Are the conditions to which corps members are thrust into considered? Why are corps members still posted to crisis ridden states? When will the program be deemed irrelevant &mundane? What example are the older generations showing youths posted to their communities, when they discriminate and victimize them? What justification does the government have to send youths to red flag states to serve their country? Can the government not see that funding the NYSC program is a waste of resources? Is the exercise more important than the ailing academic institutions that churn out these graduates? When will NYSC be scrapped? It is important to note that if a program becomes a burden on the people it was designed for, then it should be scrapped. I feel strongly that the prevailing economic, social, political, cultural and even psychological conditions in Nigeria have made that notion considerable. The Federal government should SCRAP NYSC. On this note, I urge my colleagues-Batch A corps members across the country to take heart, we have 5 months to go. My comrades ‘WE WOULD SOON BE GOOD TO GO’. http:///18JqI2G

Nairaland / General / Good News:new Media Tools Site For Reporters By Google by SCubedstudios1: 4:26pm On Oct 21, 2013 |
Google has become the latest tech company to introduce a centralized resource containing tools aimed at courting journalists, with the launch of a new hub called Google Media Tools. The idea is to offer a one-stop shop where reporters can access and learn to use a number of Google services, from Google Search trends to Google Maps as well as get details on how to use Google to enhance their reporting on topics ranging from political elections to humanitarian disasters and more. The suite of tools was first debuted at the Online News Association ‘13 (ONA) digital journalism conference last week, and was introduced to the broader public today through a post on Google’s official blog. The Google Media Tools site is more than just a collection of links pointing to other properties under the Google umbrella. Instead, it has subdivided sections where reporters can dive into various topics they’re interested in, to better learn the details of how things like Google’s Transparency Report work, or to learn how to get started using the Google Maps API to build customized maps and better visualize data. Other information on the new site includes how-to’s for reporters and news organizations aimed at helping them properly promote themselves on Google’s platform – there are instructions on how to get included in the Google News aggregator, for instance, and how to use Google+ Hangouts to reach your audience, though it misses a great opportunity to promote the resource as a way to do interviews (from personal experience, a growing request in terms of doing remote reporting via web chats). http:///19ZwZI5...Follow Yomi Ashiru On twitter |
Nairaland / General / Security Technology And Bokoharam by SCubedstudios1: 9:55am On Oct 21, 2013 |
Over the past couple of years ,there has been evident terrible results of the insurgence of (Arabic: جماعة اهل السنة للدعوة والجهاد Jamāʻat Ahl as-Sunnah lid-daʻwa wal-Jihād) — better known by its Hausa name Boko Haram in Nigeria since it became a recognized sect since 2009.It is estimated that there has been at least 10,000 deaths between 2001 and 2013 and roughly 3,600 killed, including 1,600 civilians between 2009 and 2013.This number is alarming ,however the number of those that have been displaced by the destruction of their houses, buildings, work places and religious centres is mind blowing. Boko Haram was founded as an indigenous group, turning itself into a Jihad group in 2009. It proposes that interaction with the Western world is forbidden, and also supports opposition to the Muslim establishment and the government of Nigeria. The members of the group do not interact with the local Muslim population and have carried out assassinations in the past of anyone who criticizes it, including Muslim clerics. In a 2009 BBC interview, Mohammed Yusuf, then leader of the group, stated his belief that the concept of a spherical Earth is contrary to Islamic teaching and should be rejected, along with Darwinian evolution and the concept of rain originating from water evaporated by the sun. Before his death, Yusuf reiterated the group's objective of changing the current education system and rejecting democracy. Nigerian academic Hussain Zakaria told BBCNews that the controversial cleric had a graduate education, spoke proficient English, lived a lavish lifestyle and drove a Mercedes Benz. Summarily, the main tenets Of Boko Haram are -rejecting democracy, Islamizing Nigeria and also rejecting the western education. http:///1b6leQg To read full article..visit www.yomi.ashiru.me and follow yomi ashiru on twitter |

Nairaland / General / How To Treat Sexual Harassment At Work by SCubedstudios1: 12:03pm On Oct 17, 2013 |
Sexual harassment at the work place is a serious issue that Nigerians are not keen to talk about. This is because most times they are victimized with the threat of losing their jobs, for an average Nigerian, Well that spells doom. .getting a job in this part of the world is definitely ‘not beans’ especially with the prevailing high level of unemployment and poverty. However, the victim of sexual harassment might suffer from, low self-esteem, victimization, rape and an unwillful affair as well as exposure to several sexually transmitted diseases. For women who are mostly the victims of sexual harassment, they also exposed to societal condemnation that comes with being a victim of sexual harassment. This situation is more alarming at the work place and definitely a serious issue that both employers and employees should take seriously. There are several things to do when faced with this situation most of which boils down to the victim, however the first and most important thing to do is to NEVER IGNORE SEXUAL HARASSMENT…It is a serious issue and therefore should be treated as thus .It should never ignored, talk about it with other trusted employees because if you ignore it, the harasser might escalate his/her behavior. Also, MAKE IT CLEAR TO THE HARASSER THAT THE BEHAVIOUR IS NOT WELCOME, show displeasure at his/her behavior and you must tell the harasser unequivocally to stop the behaviour. There is no special way to do this or magic words to use; but you must make it clear that the behaviour is unwelcome. You may want to put your position in writing, perhaps in an email. By doing so, you will have proof that the conduct was unwelcome if the harassment doesn't stop. Sexual harrassmentKEEP NOTES OF EVENTS, basically of what transpires between you and the harasser, not on company equipment but on a personal equipment. This serves as evidence against him when the need arises. If the harasser continues his/her behaviour REPORT THE CONDUCT. It might seem threatening but it would make the harassment stop and give the harasser an opportunity to change his/her ways. DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB, sexual harassment is an offence under the law, therefore it should be treated as such. You could take a sick leave so that the issue can be handled but don’t quit your job.http:///1etsnwT TO READ FULL ARTICLE VISIT.www.yomi.ashiru.me |

Nairaland / General / Google Chrome Steals A March On Windows by SCubedstudios1: 9:55am On Oct 14, 2013 |
The dramatic slide in sales of PCs continues, but for one new player in this market this is an opportunity. Google has launched another of its Chromebook laptops this week - made by HP in this case - and is poised to grab a bigger share of a shrinking market. That won't amuse Microsoft whose own mission to expand beyond its PC powerbase isn't making much progress. Google's Chromebooks are quite limited devices that only really function well for web-surfing, email and document writing rather than for more sophisticated applications. Nevertheless, their price is making them attractive to anyone wanting an easy way of getting online and doing some work without going to the expense of buying a tablet whose touch screen interface might not suit them. The latest figures from Gartner (a research organization for IT industry executives), reporting an 8.6% fall in PC sales in the last three months compared to a year ago show that the trend is away from devices like the Chromebook and towards tablets. The volume of sales in the back-to-school quarter were at their lowest level since 2008. Against this background though, the Chromebook is surging ahead. Gartner reckons two million will be sold this year, over five million in 2014, and 12 million by 2016. Now that will still leave the Chrome OS with just over 3% of a PC market where margins will grow ever slimmer and profits will be harder to find.http:///19zgUsk To READ FULL STORY..visit www.yomi.ashiru.me.. |

Having a good working relationship with your colleagues helps the flow of work and improves social relations and skill, Gretchen Rubin suggested 7 tips for working more happily with your colleagues. Here they are: Although some people believe it’s best to keep work life and personal life separate, and therefore avoid making friends with colleagues, for most people, having strong friendship makes work more fun. Science supports this: having close relationships is essential to happiness, strengthens the immune system, and reduces anxiety. However... If you are in a long term relationship, avoid creating a situation that can create a path of temptation. If you work alone, take time to mix with other people. Socializing boosts the moods of introverts and extroverts Each week, walk around your office and talk to a few people you don’t know well. You’ll feel more comfortable socially, plus knowing more people facilitates work flow. Remember the mere exposure effect, as well: repeated exposure makes people like music, faces, even nonsense syllables, better. Nairaland / General / Now ,anyone Can View Your Timeline On Facebook by SCubedstudios1: 9:46am On Oct 11, 2013 |
It may have been a long time coming, but those hidden in plain sight on Facebook are in for a rude awakening in the weeks ahead. The social network said Thursday that it is, as it promised 10 months ago, killing off a privacy setting that allowed members to prevent themselves from appearing in search results. Facebook first put the setting, called "Who can look up your Timeline by name?" on life support in December of last year, removing it for people who weren't using it. Now, it's ready to finish off the job. Simply put, the setting let people hide their Timelines -- aka profiles -- from public view. Members could use it to control if they could be found, and by whom, when other people typed their name into the Facebook search bar.http:///GJ3t0r To get more info on this visit..www.yomi.ashiru.me and follow on twitter @YomiBlogs |

Commuting with tricycles –‘Keke’ has become a part of life for most people in living in Lagos. It has somewhat, replaced motorcycles-Okada, after its ban from major roads in Lagos. That being said, I did not think that my 30mins journey from Ogba to Berger via ‘Keke’ would be anything extraordinary or out of this world .However, it turned out to be extraordinarily surreal, I saw the realistic impact of the downward sloping direction of the economic state of Nigeria, through the eyes of Mr.Ihiezuru-a ‘Keke’ driver who commutes from Ogba to Berger. He has a family, who he fends for with an average income of N1000 daily. Technology Market / Blackberry In A Messy Lawsuit: Falsified Data And Misleading Information. by SCubedstudios1: 6:14am On Oct 07, 2013 |
BlackBerry shareholder has filed a lawsuit against the struggling handset maker and two of its executives, alleging they made false and misleading statements about the company's financial health and the prospects for BlackBerry 10. In a lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in Manhattan, investor Marvin Pearlstein alleges the company misled investors last year by saying BlackBerry was "progressing on its financial and operational commitments" and that the previews of its Blackberry 10 smartphone platform had been well received by developers. The lawsuit alleges that BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins further misled investors during a September 27, 2012, conference investor call when he said the handset maker "continues to be a financially strong company and we're executing and delivering on our commitments," and that it "remains a strong, innovative and relevant player in the mobile computing world." Politics / Nigeria At 53:nigerians And Their Fellow Nigerians by SCubedstudios1: 8:56am On Oct 01, 2013 |
A discussion ensued with my colleagues at work about the UNILAG postgraduate student that claimed to have scientific backing against same sex marriage. In the course of the discussion we talked about the state of our academic institutions and also linked it to patriotism and our myopic, religious and probably sentimental orientation as Nigerians. I decided not to write on the ‘history ‘of Nigeria-its achievements, ills, failings over the years and future. This is because it is the norm, most Nigerian newspapers, articles and media platforms will provide us with all the needed information as regards that, moreover the issues plaguing Nigeria are never ending issues whose grandparents are Corruption, selfish tendencies of Nigerians, Greed, Religious extremism, Lack of respect for one another, tribalism and political cabals. However, an issue that requires great attention is the issue of “Nigerians and their fellow Nigerians”. As a Nigerian do you stop when the traffic light goes Red? Do stop before the zebra crossing sign, for people to cross? Do you exercise patience at traffic jams and wait on your lane? Do you get to work at 9am and sign in as 7am? Do you show kindness to the next man? Have you killed another Nigerian just to get richer? Have you been in a bus, where an elderly/pregnant woman is standing and told her to sit, while you stand? Are you a 419er? Are you a Yahoo boy? Do you speak ill of Nigeria at the slightest opportunity? Do you litter the road? Do you urinate indiscriminately on the road? Do you Obey ALL traffic rules? Have you gotten your Driver’s License? Is the car /commercial bus you put on the road, roadworthy? Do you hurl insults at other motorists in a bid to get your way? Do you steal from your employer? Are you a religious extremist? Have you been infringing on the rights of others? Are you tribalistic ? Have you paid your tax? These questions are for all of us and definitely not restricted to just the government of Nigeria. SEE THE REST HERE http:///15HKmKp
