The news of the hospital is indeed a lie and unlike you, I think it was done by some people who don't have the good of the church in mind and by church, I mean the entire body of Christ.
Whoever wrote that article knows of a surety that what he was writing was a lie and knows that people would believe it at first but will later find out it was a lie, and they will look so stupid for believing. People hate to look stupid.
But then what could be their aim for doing that? My speculation is quiet different from yours. (Of course we wouldn't be sure unless we are able to ask them directly). My speculation is this: 1. To divert the peoples attention from the truth who's is the new headquarters church into a more juicy edifice which of course doesn't exist.
2. To bring disappointment to the people when they find out the truth which they know wouldn't take long to be found.
3. To make the people believe that there was a better way in which the money used in building a befitting house of God could have been put into a better use.
4. To make the people believe that building a nice place of worship for Jesus Christ is a very bad thing.
And many more that can't be exhausted in this list.
There is more to this that you can possibly inmagine. There is a fight against the development of the body of Christ and they are using the worshipers of Christ as weapons in this war. And am so sorry to say this OP. (I've got nothing against you) but you sure did fell for their tricks and I'm dissapointed.
OP. You are a little bit short sighted on what the old Gbagada church looked like, because if you are not, you would know the church was in a great need of the new headquarters church and you wouldn't have written some of the things you wrote up there.

However, do you feel this can be learned by government training (a few months) and adequate sensitization, rather than going for a degree and getting sunburned still?

The abstract and physical aspect can be learnt in months but the science behind it will take longer than just months.
What I mean is this... The planting, weeding, harvesting and other basic farm yard practice can be learned in months but it will take more of practice, reading and field experiments to be able to control pest and diseases, take decisions with tangible reasons and perform excellently as a farmer hence the reason why we spend 5 years studying in university.
However the basics can be learnt in months but in case you are face with a new threat on your farm or an unfamiliar situation you will need the help of an educated expert.

Farm practice year popularly known as FPY is a one year program for all the 400 level basic Agric students of faculty of Agriculture in most universities in Nigeria.
The first six months of the program is spent on the school farm to gain experience in all areas of agriculture.
The 2016/2017 session of this program has started 3 weeks ago in Federal University Oye-Ekiti (Ikole campus). It has been full of great experiences of learning new things. Although it can sometimes be stressful.
