The era of Tesla receiving accolades for its innovative vehicles like the Tesla Cybertruck seems to have been over as the automaker is under scrutiny over the reliability of its autopilot program. Investigations carried out by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on a fatal crash involving a Tesla vehicle using its autopilot system have revealed damaging information about the American company.

The crash in question involved a Tesla 2018 Model X which was being driven by a car owner identified as Walter Huang. Huang, an Engineer, was said to have been driving the electrical vehicle on autopilot while immersed in a video game he was playing on his mobile phone. He had so much confidence in the accuracy of the autopilot, hence, he was intentionally distracted. His car hit a barrier on the highway, leading to a fatal crash.

Speaking about the incident, Vice Chairman of the NTSB, Bruce Landberg, said that the vehicle’s Autosteer, a feature meant to ensure that the vehicle does not go out of its lane, was inadequate. Landberg’s remark is presumably based on the outcome of the fatal crash. If the Autosteer was adequate, Huang’s vehicle would have remained on its lane, far away from the highway barrier.

In Tesla’s defense, the company clearly states that drivers are expected to be present and alert even when they have engaged the autopilot system on the road. But the counter-argument is that not may drivers will heed to that directive. If it is so effective, why do they need to be alert?

These investigative findings have dealt a heavy blow on Tesla’s crusade for autonomous driving. The company’s CEO Elon Musk would have to work overtime to fix this.

The cars which will be a first in Nigeria will be powered by batteries that can be recharged with both electrical and solar energy.

Lare who resides in Atlanta has disclosed that the vehicles can be fully charged by sunlight. This is great news as Nigeria is blessed with more than enough sunlight. Simply leaving the vehicles outside will get them well charged. But in the rainy season when there is limited sunlight, the vehicles can be charged with electricity.

The automaker noted that charging the vehicles with electricity in Nigeria might be a challenge as the country still battles with having constant electricity. However, he said that his company was working on finding a solution to it. For starters, they will create electrical charging stations in multiple fuel stations across Nigeria. With these, Nigerians who own the EV will have places to charge them.

Speaking further, the CEO revealed that the vehicles are equipped with some of the latest car technologies, including a payment system and a GPS. He also disclosed that the company will not accept cash payments from individuals who want to purchase the new vehicle. All payments will be done with the use of credits and bank cards.

Highlighting the benefits of this development to the Nigerian economy, Lare said that it would create several job opportunities for the Nigerian youth, especially electrical and mechanical engineers.

The testing of the vehicle is scheduled to commence in Lagos, Abuja and Onitsha.

Taxi ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt have become popular in the country in recent years, displacing traditional taxi services. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has embarked on a mass seizure of imported used vehicles that violate stipulated regulations – seizing no fewer than 283 vehicles in various states across the nation.

According to the foreign trade statistics, Nigerians spent ₦509.8 billion on used vehicle importation from January through September 2019. These vehicles, popularly referred to as Tokunbo, are imported from countries including the United States of America, Canada, Germany, Belgium, and Italy.

The data show that vehicles worth ₦148.28bn were imported in the first quarter of last year, 2019. Among the countries listed above, the United States takes the lead with the importation of vehicles valued at ₦90.8bn. The ₦58 billion balance was gotten from the other countries.

Despite the huge numbers recorded from vehicle importation, importers find illegal ways to boycott necessary payments to the authorities. The number of vehicles being imported into the country is believed to increase this year, but importers would have to go through the bureaucracy obtainable at the customs office. The manual system is rigorous, making it a daunting process. People are not able to process their products by themselves; they have to go through agents to have it done. Individuals who are able to handle the process themselves still need the assistance of agents.

According to a secular released by the NCS, its officials embarked on an operation, seizing about 283 vehicles. Speaking about the operation, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd), stated that, out of the total number of vehicles, 135 were seized in Lagos, 93 were seized in Kaduna and 37 were seized in Port Harcourt.

“Anything seized or detained under the customs and excise laws shall forthwith be delivered into the care of the Board and, subject to the provisions of the Third Schedule to this Act, shall, pending the determination as to its forfeiture or disposal, be dealt with, and, if condemned or deemed to have been condemned as forfeited, shall be disposed of, in such manner as the Board may direct.”

Some drivers working with Taxi-hailing company, Uber, staged a peaceful protest on Monday, February 10, 2020, marching down to the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) office in Lagos State over the recent clampdown on them.

Officials of the VIS, popularly called Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) had earlier commenced a clampdown on Uber drivers who did not have certification from the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) and hackney permit. The VIS also insists that the company must pay a fee to the state government to obtain a license for operation. According to VIS authorities, the law is not a new one. It has been in existence but is only being enforced now.

An Uber driver, Adegoke Faloye, who spoke to The Guardian blamed Uber for the clampdown over what he described as "their noncompliance to regulations enacted by the government." He further disclosed that several complaints made to Uber were not acknowledged until recently when the company released a memo, asking all drivers to be calm as the organization was on top of the situation. However, the drivers were still being harassed by VIOs.

“Uber and Taxify need[ed] to do the right thing to the government since 2016. The government had written to them and decided to stop them since they did not comply.

“There was a circular that was sent via the app that they were aware of the crisis. They said they have an agreement with VIO office not to disturb us.”

A drama played out in Lagos as some policemen tried to seize a power bike being driven by a young man on his way to work, following the recent ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles by the Lagos state government.

The man in question, Nmutaka Chikwendu, narrated his encounter with the security personnel on Facebook. According to him, he was riding his power bike to work in the morning when he was apprehended by four policemen for flouting the motorcycle ban.

Immediately, a crowd began to gather, questioning the officers if the power bike was a commercial motorcycle to warrant their action. A motorist who was driving by alighted from his vehicle, and showed the officers a broadcast apparently released by the police command in Lagos, detailing specifications of vehicles affected by the ban. But the officers refused to take a look at it, insisting that they were in line with their job. Not even a call put across to a phone number displayed in the broadcast could make the officers budge. They finally gave in when they saw that the crowd was not going to leave until they let the young man leave with his bike.

“A good Samaritan parked his car...showed them the broadcast sent by Lagos state police command. They refused to read it. He then called the numbers in the broadcast and the policemen refused to speak with their superiors. The man put his phone on speaker and we could all hear the police command asking if it was okada and the whole crowd roared "No!" Our street crew cops refused to budge. The Samaritan eventually called their DPO who asked them to release me... then they started looking for one Officer Ojo of Ifako police station who took my bike key and went away.

Crowd kept building... policemen became scared. Tried to disperse crowd. People refused to budge. I actually started getting worried and started asking people to leave. They said they wouldn't move until I was released. Eventually, the Ojo fellow sauntered out with my key and I started my bike... revved it a few times which drew cheers from the crowd... and continued heading to work.”

A Nigerian man, Obinna Echanu, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of an Uber driver, Edwin Ali on December 26, 2016. The judgment was passed by a Federal High Court in Nyanya – Abuja, on Thursday, February 6, 2020.

Echanu was dragged to court along with Everly Nnorom by the Nigeria Police Force on five charges including conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, culpable homicide and armed robbery. According to the prosecution, Echanu, 42, conspired with Nnorom, 27, to kill the deceased with a revolver pistol.

In his judgment, Justice Peter Kekemeke found Echanu guilty of culpable homicide and armed robbery. But his fellow accused, Nnorom, was discharged and acquitted of all charges as there was a lack of evidence to prove his participation in the crimes. According to the Judge, the conspiracy charge was invalid as the prosecution could not prove that Nnorom worked with Echanu in executing the crime.

Kekemeke further said that, notwithstanding, the police were able to make a strong case of culpable homicide and armed robbery against Echanu – leaving no room for doubt. Hence, he was sentenced to pay the ultimate price by hanging.

Prior to the judgment, Echanu was accused by the Police of possessing a revolver pistol. The weapon was found with him on March 21, 2017. This, according to the Police, violates the Special Provisions Act of Robbery and Firearms.

A young Nigerian, Osuolale Farouq, became an internet sensation after a logo he designed for Nigerian indigenous automaker IVM, Innoson Vehicle Motors, went viral last year. The frenzy heightened when the automaker publicly acknowledged Farouq’s design – creating the impression that it might be adopted by the company. The young chap has revealed that the company will not be making use of his design- for now.

Writing on social media, Farouq said that he was invited to the Innoson manufacturing plant, and had the opportunity to meet with the company’s head, Dr. Innoson Chukwuma, at his residence in Nnewi, Anambra State. He had a one-on-one meeting with the boss, and they talked about the company. Unfortunately, Chukwuma disclosed that rebranding the company with Farouq’s design would not be feasible at this time due to the huge financial implications of the venture. However, he was commended for his efforts and was adequately compensated.

The undergraduate urged Nigerians to support the brand by patronizing their products. He also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support toward him in coming this far with the company.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will no longer allow the use of vehicles with unauthorized sirens, flashing lights and spy number plates on roads across the country. The order was issued by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, in a statement conveyed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, in an official statement released on Monday, February 3, 2020, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Police boss was said to have made the declaration while receiving the Federal Road Safety Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, during an official visit. Adamu stated that the use of vehicles with revolving lights, sirens and spy number plates that were not properly registered was illegal. Hence, it was a threat to not just the security of the nation, but that of the masses.

Acknowledging the partnership between the NPF and the FRSC, Adamu reiterated the commitment of the police to maintain the relationship especially in key areas including training, operations, information sharing and the prosecution of defaulters.

Speaking further, the IG commended efforts by Commissioner of Police in Lagos State Hakeem Odumosu in clamping down illegal practices including the covering of number plates by motorists.

To this end, all vehicles found to have Spy number plates not duly issued, using sirens, or revolving lights without permit or having covered number plates will be promptly impounded.

These practices are illegal and pose monumental security risks to the nation and its people.

The FRSC boss said that the purpose of the visit was to facilitate continuous collaborations between the two institutions toward national interest.

The Nigerian auto industry is on the path of growth as the government of the federation has called on stakeholders to make expedient contributions in the amendment of the auto policy tagged "Draft Automotive Policy and Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP)." This is to boost the country’s automobile manufacturing landscape.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo, during an event put together by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) in collaboration with the ministry.

The National Assembly enacted the auto policy in 2018 and this was passed onto the presidency for assent. Unfortunately, the policy was sent back to the institution over concerns raised by industry experts and stakeholders.

Adebayo commended the NDDC for its steadfastness in reviewing and pushing the policy after it was initially returned. He stated that the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) was created to champion efforts of the manufacturing industry in increasing the nation’s Gross Domestic Policy (GDP). In doing this, the NIRP creates employment opportunities, reduces importation and increases exportation of Made-in-Nigeria products. He was optimistic that the automotive industry in Nigeria has the potentials to bring about socio-economic growth and development as obtainable in other African countries like Morocco and South Africa.

“It depicts the commitment of all key stakeholders towards improving the activities of the automotive sector and a strong reassurance of the governments’ industrialization drive in accordance with the NIRP.

“It is, therefore, our hope that the caliber of the people that gathered to deliberate on the review of these documents will bring to bear their wealth of experience in the industry to produce a solid document.”

The passengers who were about 70 in number were set to depart home via the Chubu Centrair International Airport when they started protesting that the airline should not allow 16 passengers residing in Wuhan into the aircraft over the fear that they might infect them with the coronavirus. What seemed like a minor issue at first lasted for over 5 hours before their 2-hour flight commenced.

After being adamant for hours, the protesting passengers finally laid down their guards after they were spoken to by the Chinese Consulate-General in the city of Nagoya. They reluctantly agreed to board the plane with the Wuhan residents after one of them who was spotted a slight fever by a temperature check was removed from the flight.

While it might have seen like the protesters were being inconsiderate, their concerns were valid given that the Coronavirus has killed no fewer than 170 persons in China, and left about 6,000 persons across the world sick.

The airport incident came shortly after Japan authorities confirmed that 2 more persons had been infected with the virus in their country.

The Coronavirus is believed to have originated from the city of Wuhan in China.

Saturday, January 25, 2020, unidentified gunmen laid siege to vehicles occupied by passengers who had just come off a train at the Rigasa railway station situated in the Northern state of Kaduna. Some of the travelers were abducted while others were let go with injuries.

Naijauto gathered that the incident occurred after the passengers got to the train station from the federal capital territory, Abuja, around 8 pm. According to reports, the families of those who were abducted have been contacted – with a ₦20 million ransom being demanded.

This was not the first time such a thing happened at the station. An incident like this happened on Friday, January 24, 2020.

Speaking about the incident, the Kaduna State Police Command Spokesperson, DSP Yakubu Sabo, stated that the police had commenced investigations to get to the root of the issue.

Hopefully, the culprits will be apprehended.

Is this good news for unemployed Lagos youths? The Lagos State government, through the Lagos Ministry of Transportation, plans to train and employ no fewer than 1,000 graduates to take up the jobs of “bus conductors” in the state.

The initiative which will be done in collaboration with the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) is the first-of-its-kind in the Center of Excellence. Shedding light on the development, BCAN president, Comrade Israel Ade Adeshola, said that the association was working with the state government to make the job attractive to suit the needs of graduates.

According to Adeshola, measures would be put in place to ensure that the job is lucrative. Prior to employment, prospective candidates will undergo intensive training to be acquainted with the skills required for the job. With such training, they will be different from regular conductors on commercial Danfo buses.

“Presently, Lagos kingdom authorities through the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) is training and accrediting conductors in the state. After the coaching, the graduands would be employed as Bus Conductors and would be on the payroll of the authorities with a salary really worth of ₦50,000 per month.”

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his commitment to foster transformation in the education sector of the state – promising to give car rewards to outstanding teachers across the 20 local government areas and 37 local government development areas in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu made this known while speaking at the inauguration of the Excellence in Child Learning and Education program (EKOEXCEL) – an initiative specially designed for the development of teachers – at the Lagos Television (LTV) premises, Ikeja.

The event had more than 3,000 primary school teachers in attendance to witness the grand occasion. The teachers from different schools had earlier participated in training supervised by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). This was geared towards enhancing their teaching skills. The executive governor disclosed that more than 14,000 teachers were slated to benefit from this program. In the long run, no fewer than 500,000 pupils will be positively influenced.

In order to spur teachers to put in the best, Sanwo-Olu stated that the most outstanding headteachers would be identified and rewarded with a car by the state government. In addition to this, the teachers would have access to free medical eye assessment, and medical glasses would be issued to those who need one.

“As a responsible government, we will continue the massive investment in this sector, with the training and retraining of our teachers, making the sector more ICT compliant, exposing our teachers to international best practices as well as ensuring that our schools become a destination for work and learning.

“We have resolved to address these problems through combining innovative technological approach that is scientifically based, with effective training, and empowering our teachers in every local government to strengthen their capacity and deliver quality education to our children.”

The American automaker experienced a tremendous increase in its stock value. For the past three months, Tesla stock has increased to more than twice its previous value. This shot up its market capitalization to a mind-blowing $100 billion last Wednesday. This was the first time a carmaker attained such heights.

Volkswagen was a strong contender in the race. It put up a good fight with its $99.4 billion market value until it was overpowered by Tesla last Wednesday.

Tesla might be taking over the automobile industry with its $100 billion stock value, but it is still behind heavyweight carmaker Toyota which has $233 billion. And from all indications, it is still far from coming close to Toyota let alone surpassing it.

A funny incident played out in the Falomo area of Lagos state when a truck driver damaged the side mirror of a G-Wagon. Livid by what just happened, the owner of the G-Wagon, a lady, stepped out of her car and charged at the driver to pay for the damage he had done.

If the lady was expecting the driver to put up a fight as most of his colleagues usually do, she must have been disappointed by his reaction. The young man simply started crying.

Are you wondering why he was crying?

It is obvious that a G-Wagon is an expensive vehicle. Hence, its parts are expensive too. The driver probably had no money on him and was embarking on that trip to earn some little money for himself. A G-Wagon has a starting price of ₦50 million (fifty million naira). A single G-Wagon side mirror costs over ₦100,000 (one hundred thousand naira). Where was he supposed to get that amount of money from?

The lady was all set for a showdown, but the driver chickened out.

It took the intervention of passersby’s who pleaded with the lady, on his behalf, before she finally let him go. We hope he learned a lesson.

The Lagos state government has announced a ban on the use of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in some areas of the state.
In a bid to ensure freer and safer roads across the Center of Excellence, the Lagos state government has announced that 2000 traffic prohibition signs have been installed in the state – clearly indicating areas where motorcycles and tricycles are no longer allowed to commute.

This was disclosed in a series of tweets posted on the micro-blogging platform Twitter. The authorities are optimistic that the move will reduce the heavy traffic experienced in the metropolitan city.

Motorcycles and tricycles are largely patronized by residents of the state due to the ease they provide in moving from one place to another. Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Chapter, Musiliu Akinsanya, alias MC Oluomo, gifted some staff of the union five sleek Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) estimated to cost over ₦20 million, for their hard work, dedication and support over the years. The car gifts were presented to the deserving workers at the union’s secretariat in Lagos during an event organized to mark the Chairman’s 100 days in office.

MC Uluomo was full of praises for his workers as he handed them their presents. He expressed his appreciation to them for having faith in him right from when he was appointed as Treasurer of the union.

Speaking further, the Chairman assured members of the union of his commitment to take the union onto greater heights. He acknowledged that achieving this feat would only be possible with their continuous hard work, faith, and support for union activities. He also advised members of the NURTW who are drivers to always obey traffic laws and desist from driving under the influence of alcohol.
