Like her famous husband, Mrs Buhari is equally a self-effacing but extremely articulate and charming woman. She can be described as the softer side of the mirthless and disciplined retired Army general. Here are a few things you probably didnt know about Nigeria’s new First Lady. 1. Childhood Aisha Buhari was born in Adamawa state into the family of the first Minister of Defense, Muhammadu Ribadu in the early 1970’s. She is also the granddaughter of the first Chiroma Of Adamawa. She was schooled in the best of Fulani traditions and cultures . She speaks English and Arabic fluently. 2. Education Aisha Buhari is a thorough professional and an alumnus of the famous Ahmadu Bello university where she earned a Bachelors in Public Administration. Her quest for more education took her into the field of Physiotherapy and Beauty therapy. She is also an alumnus of the famous Carlton Institute of London and the Academy Esthetique Beauty Institute of France, Dubai where she earned a Post graduate diploma in cosmetology and beauty theraphy. She also has a Master’s Degree in International Affairs & Strategic Studies from Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. 3. Family Aisha got married to Buhari in December 1989 and they have been married for twenty five years now.they are blessed with children and a grandchild. She said this about her husband in an interview,“My husband is a family-oriented person. He has very close relationships with his children, grandchild, and entire members of the family. He is very caring and protective of us”. 4. She gained popularity when she asked Jonathan to resign After an assassination attempt on her husband in July 2014 in Kaduna, she said that President Goodluck Jonathan should resign from his office. “As he saw grieving families suffering with the pain of losing their loved ones and the sadness and resentment of the public, he took responsibility as prime Minister; he apologised to his country and resigned because of service to humanity. Jonathan should emulate such a leader, because Nigerians have been dying daily, for the four years, hoping that government is going to do something, but we are tired of this insecurity and increased attacks on innocent people. Where is Jonathan? What is he doing? If action is not taken now, when? It is not enough to verbally condemn; action is long overdue.” She concluded. 5. She is an entrepeneur and employer of labour Aisha is a woman with great entrepreneurial spirit.Following her certification in beauty and permanent makeup , Mrs Buhari was encouraged and supported by her husband to engage in private enterprise where she has since become an employer of labour, a mentor to all aspiring cosmetologists and a consultant to the KRCP/NNPC on skills acquisition. Mrs Buhari is a member of the United Kingdom Vocational Training and Charitable Trust (VTCT), The International Health and Beauty Council (HBC).She is also a board member of International Human Right with their head office in United Kingdom. 6. She plans to perform her role as the wife of the President traditionally She made a statement during the APC women presidential campaign that “When my husband is elected as the president of this country, he will rule the country within the rule of law based on the constitution of the country. If the office of the first lady is constitutionally recognized, he will not tamper with it, but if it is not that’s okay. For me, I will perform my duties and role as the wife of the President of Nigeria traditionally.Wives of presidents have some traditional roles, like receiving guests, visiting orphanages, helping the less privileged people. They also lead in the fight for the right of women and malnourished children, infant mortality rate, kidnapping and girl-child trafficking,” she said. 7. She is a strong advocate for the female gender She never misses an opportunity to advocate for the empowerment of women in even traditionally male circles. With a woman like Aisha Buhari as the First Lady of Nigeria, it is certain that female issues will take the front burner in the Buhari administration. The national collation centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abuja was some few minutes ago thrown into commotion as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, agent, Elder Godsdey Orubebe, refused to allow the continuation of announcement of election results. Upon resumption on Tuesday morning to continue announcing the election results, Mr. Orubebe sought and got the permission of the INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to make an observation. Immediately he was handed the microphone, the former Niger Delta Minister held up a piece of paper, which he said was printed from the opposition party, All Progressives Congress’ website, purportedly showing the party’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari as winner of the election even though all the results have not yet been announced. Accusing Jega of bias and tribalism, the PDP agent passed a vote of no confidence on the INEC chairman. “You are very very selective, partial; we’ve lost confidence in what you are doing. We don’t believ in you anymore”, he said, adding “You are tribalistic! You are partial! You are selective! We’ll not allow it! This [the result] is already printed by Jega and APC!” Apparently vexed by the INEC chairman’s decision to set up a probe committee on the election in Rivers State, Mr. Orubebe said Jega refused to look into similar complaints by the ruling party on some states, especially in the North, which the PDP considered to have been massively rigged. “Let Jega set up a committee, to go to Kano; to go to Katsina, to go to Jigawa, to go to Kaduna. They are playing a script! We won’t allow it”, Orubebe thundered. He was unyielding as Mr. Jega and other INEC officials appealed to him to allow the collation to go on. He said the collation would not go on except Mr. Jega leaves the venue for his office to “address PDP complaints”. In his response, Jega denied the accusation of bias leveled against him by the PDP, stressing that the party did not follow the right channel of communication in submitting its petition. He argued that the petition was given to his Personal Assistant instead of the Secretary to the Commission. This much Jega said he told the PDP agent at the collation centre, Dr. Bello Fadile, who said “okay”. He also claimed ignorance of the election result allegedly paraded by the APC. The collation of results has since resumed. |

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were today denied access from conducting their lawful duties in parts of Edo North according to Guardian newspaper. INEC officials were reported to be moving electoral materials to Ward 10, Unit 1 in Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area when they were stopped by army men who enterred Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s hometown, the report said. ![]() Oshiomhole Gets Accredited The officials were made to sit on the ground with their police escort. The report said: “They were later allowed to leave after they got calls from their superiors,” “The soldiers said they were acting on strict orders from above.” The paper reported Governor Adams Oshiomhole as expressing shock at the development and wondering why electoral officials should not be restricted on their own day. Even journalists, the report said, were blocked by the soldiers who insisted “that were not permitted to monitor the exercise from one unit to another as they were only allowed to monitor a particular unit”. In response to the development, a livid Governor Oshiomhole said, “Yesterday (Friday) I addressed the Press and I did say that Brigadier Odidi has chosen to frustrate this exercise in Edo North. Ironically, Brigadier Odidi is from Agenebode and he is the one who is giving this unlawful order. “Why the Nigerian Army will be used in this manner, only God knows. So I am surprised that they are restricting INEC Officers from distributing materials. I have told the Brigade Commander and I am waiting to see what he is going to do but when you bear in mind that time is if the essence, if we finally go and beg the General to please allow democracy, time is gone. “First there is no light across the country so we are going to have everywhere in the dark. Under such situation, nobody knows what happens but I refuse to be frustrated and I appeal to our people not to be frustrated, we will sort things out. “It is clear they have serious problem taking off. As you can see I am here and they say the card reader is not well programmed, it is not functioning and I got report from my Ward Headquarters that there are materials that are there and apparently the returning officers are trapped there because the soldiers wouldn’t let them cross their barricade. From Apana the Ward Headquarters to this place, my voting centre takes about 10 minutes because of the good roads we have done.” The Governor, according to the report, added, “I have complained to the soldiers here. I have also called the Brigade Commander to draw his attention to it. This one is completely incomprehensible because I do not know what the briefing of the Army is but what Professor Jega said is that in the event of a machine not working, they have spare to use and they have officers who would put them to work. “Now if the Army is blocking INEC officials from moving, this is a new dimension that we have not heard of before and I thought the business of the Army is basically to check people who are carrying offensive weapons, I do not know if card reader is now an offensive weapon. I have complained to the Brigade Commander, Major General Olaleye and you have also heard me mentioning it to the Electoral Officer (E.O). “My appeal; our people have a proverb that when you know that enemies are surrounding you, you do not go and rub yourself with an inflammable chemical such that when they just push you a little bit and you sit near fire, you get roasted. There is no doubt there are enemies of democracy, there is no doubt there are people who do no want free and fair elections and therefore I am not going to lend support by way of any comment that will readily suit the expectation of those who are anti- democratic. “I have spoken to the INEC REC in Benin and I believe that Professor Jega the Chairman should be aware of what is going on in Edo where card readers are not working in many places. We have gotten reports from Benin and across the state and it appears the problem is rather widespread but it is my hope that INEC has sensible alternatives to invoke when we are in this kind of critical condition. “I want to appeal to Nigerians, we have suffered enough. One more day of suffering will not kill us so let us exercise all the patience that we can, let’s refuse to be frustrated, let us not resort to a shouting match. By the Grace of God, God will not leave us hopeless. “As leaders we must provide leadership role, more so at this hour. I have faith in democracy, it is not a choice, it is the only option. All of us have to be ready to sacrifice the day. I am very impressed seeing ordinary people queue up patiently to vote. These are farmers who if they don’t work, they don’t earn. They are not like urban people who put pen to paper and steal money and earn even without working. If they sleep, their production will sleep. So they donate their production today for Nigeria’s democracy and this is what they get, but I am happy that they are not fighting. “It is already getting to a critical point, it is few minutes to 11:00am and some materials have not been able to reach here because the Army blocked up the roads for INEC, and where INEC has reached, the machines are not working. I want to hope that this will be solved and so let us wait.” |

APC Wants Voting Time Extended The All Progressives Congress has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to extend the time for accreditation and voting to make up for the delay caused by the use of card readers The Nation reports. The party in a statement issued in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Saturday, said extending the time for accreditation and voting will ensure that Nigerians who have queued up patiently at their polling units as early as 8:00am will not be disenfranchised. ![]() National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed It also urged INEC to recognize the letters from the various political party agents, since the commission was not able to fulfill its promise to accredit party agents, which used to be done by the parties themselves. APC commended Nigerians for their patience in getting accredited, saying by waiting patiently to get accredited, they have shown an unprecedented commitment to the growth of democracy in the country. The party said from the reports it has received from its field agents, it is clear that the card reader, as a tool to enhance the credibility of elections in the country, has so far proved effective, despite the delays. ”The card reader is a novel tool in our elections and naturally there will be some initial hiccups. We understand that the delays were due to the failure to remove the protective films on the lenses of many card readers, the poor network of some of the sim cards in the machines and the effect of jamming devices on the card readers,” it stated. APC warned against the resort to manual accreditation in some parts of the country, where the card readers are being bypassed, saying it is against the electoral guidelines. ”People must continue to be patient until the card reader works,” the party said. |

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted to the critical situation with the inability of many people to vote during today. Read the latest statement published via the official handle @INECAlert moments ago: The INEC has been monitoring field reports on the accreditation process since commencement this morning. Whereas the process has gone well in several places, in some others it has encountered some challenges, especially because of the card readers. Consequently, the accreditation has been slow in many places and has not commenced at all in some others. Even though the guidelines for the 2015 general elections provide that where card readers fail to work and cannot be replaced, elections in such polling units will be postponed to the next day. The scale of the challenge we have observed has necessitated a reconsideration of the provision of the guidelines. The commission has therefore decided that in the polling units where card readers fail to work, the Presiding Officer shall manually accredit voters. The Presiding Officer shall mark the voters register upon being satisfied that the person presenting a PVC is the owner. Notwithstanding, in PUs where accreditation was suspended to the next day in accordance with the guidelines arrangements will be made for voters to vote tomorrow, subject to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010. The commission reassures the public that it will thoroughly investigate what happened while it stays committed to credible elections. Stay with us for LIVE updates, as # NigeriaDecides. |

Read President Goodluck Jonathan's speech while addressing the nation on the forthcoming 2015 elections which hold tomorrow, March 27, 2015. ![]() Read President Goodluck Jonathan's speech while addressing the nation on the forthcoming 2015 elections which hold tomorrow, March 27, 2015. As we prepare to go to the polls tomorrow, I have come before you this morning to express my immense appreciation for the opportunity you gave me to lead this great nation of ours in the past four years. I also wish to place on record, once again, my sincere gratitude for the support you have given my administration without which the significant progress we have made in recent years would not have been possible. In spite of the many challenges we have had to contend with since 1999, our present democratic dispensation continues to endure and grow stronger in keeping with the yearnings and aspirations of our people. We have all worked very hard to nurture and strengthen our democratic institutions and promote the good governance practices which they were designed to deliver for the better well-being of our people. I believe I can say without fear of contradiction that we all clearly cherish the democracy we now have and will never willingly give it up for any other form of governance. This much-cherished democracy of ours is about to be put to the test once again. I urge you all to troop out en-masse to peacefully perform your civic duty of voting for leaders of your choice tomorrow. As we do so, let us all – political party leaders, contestants, party members, party agents, supporters and ordinary voters alike, be very conscious of the fact that the eyes of the entire world are on us. We must therefore comport ourselves in a manner that will further strengthen our democracy and consolidate our place in the comity of truly democratic nations. I made a commitment on assumption of office to progressively deliver freer, fairer and more credible elections in our country. In keeping with that commitment, the Federal Government has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all necessary support to ensure that it conducts very successful elections tomorrow and on April 11. We have all been assured that INEC is fully ready for the elections. I believe that we can all trust that they are certainly more ready now than they may have been before security issues and other concerns necessitated a re-scheduling of the dates for the 2015 general elections. As an administration, we welcome the fact that millions of Nigerians who were yet to receive their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) as at February 14, and would therefore have been unfairly disenfranchised if the polls had gone ahead on that date, have seized the opportunity of the re-scheduling to collect their cards and can now exercise their right to vote tomorrow. We are also glad that our gallant Armed Forces have successfully stemmed the seizure of Nigerian territories in the North- East by the terrorist group, Boko Haram. They have recaptured most of the communities and territories formerly occupied by the insurgents, making it possible for thousands of internally- displaced Nigerians to begin returning to their homes and communities. I heartily commend the very courageous men and women of our Armed Forces for the immense sacrifices which they continue to make in defending the nation and protecting its citizens. I also thank all Nigerians for keeping faith with us over the past six weeks. I call on all political parties and politicians in the country to allow the free, unfettered will of our people to be expressed without any hindrance in the coming elections in keeping with the hallowed principles and tenets of democratic governance which we all profess. The will of the people freely expressed through the ballot is the bedrock of all democracies and ours cannot be an exception. Let us all therefore be prepared, as true democrats, to graciously accept the outcome of the elections as the rightful choice of our people from whom all political powers in our democracy must emanate. My administration has done its utmost best in the past four years to deliver on our promise to positively transform our country. Tomorrow’s election is another very important milestone as we continue our march towards the fulfillment of our God- given potential for greatness. The election offers us another opportunity to empower leaders of our choice once again, and to show the world that genuine democracy is alive and well in our beloved nation. I will like to restate my belief that no political ambition can justify violence or the shedding of the blood of our people. I reaffirm once again, my personal preparedness to ensure fair play during the elections and to deploy the resources and institutions of state only in the manner prescribed by our laws. Let me warn, however, that as President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am under oath to protect the lives of all Nigerians and the security of our country at all times. I will never abdicate my responsibilities in that regard. Democracy allows dissent. It encourages differences and even fervent disagreements. But elections must never be mistaken for war or an opportunity to set fellow citizens against each other and tear our beloved nation apart. Those who may harbor any intentions of testing our will by unleashing violence during the elections in order to advance their political ambitions should think again as all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure that any persons who breach the peace or cause public disorder during or after the elections are speedily apprehended and summarily dealt with according to our laws. The nation’s security agencies are also fully prepared and ready to deal decisively with any group or persons who attempt to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections or cause any form of public disorder. Our dear country, Nigeria is the largest democracy amongst black nations of the world. We are a nation of great accomplishments, with a proud history of evolving affinities. Let us go out tomorrow to vote peacefully and set a fitting example of political maturity for other emerging democracies to follow. I wish you all and our dear nation, very peaceful and successful elections. May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I thank you all. |
