Match background • This is United's first European fixture without Sir Alex at the helm since 20 March 1985 when Ron Atkinson's side went out of the UEFA Cup in a quarter-final tie against eventual runners-up Videoton FC in Hungary, losing 1-0 on the night and 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw. • At home in last season's UEFA Champions League, United beat Galatasaray AŞ and SC Braga but lost their last two such fixtures, to CFR 1907 Cluj and Real Madrid CF, the latter result confirming their elimination in the round of 16. The English title holders have won only three of their last nine home fixtures in UEFA competition and have lost four of the last six. • United's last home encounter with German opposition brought a 4-1 victory over FC Schalke 04 in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, a result that secured a 6-1 aggregate triumph. That was their fifth straight home win against visitors from the Bundesliga – Leverkusen were the last to avoid defeat, in 2001/02 – and their overall record is W7 D3 L2. • Leverkusen won twice on their travels in last season's UEFA Europa League – at Rosenborg BK and SK Rapid Wien – but also lost at FC Metalist Kharkiv and SL Benfica. The latter defeat, 2-1 in Lisbon, ensured their exit in the round of 32. • This is Leverkusen's UEFA Champions League third group stage appearance since they faced United in 2002/03. On both subsequent occasions – 2004/05 and 2011/12 – they qualified for the last 16. In the second of those campaigns they were grouped with Chelsea FC, losing 2-0 in London in September 2011 but winning 2-1 at home two months later, Eren Derdiyok (73) and Manuel Friedrich (90) scoring. • Leverkusen are still seeking a first win in England where their record reads W0 D2 L6. • United won their second European Cup with a 2-1 victory over FC Bayern München in the 1998/99 final in Barcelona. Team ties • Moyes played three matches in the European Champion Clubs' Cup for Celtic FC in 1981 and 1982. As Everton FC manager he contested a third qualifying round tie against Villarreal CF in 2005/06, a 4-2 aggregate defeat. • Moyes' only previous encounter with German opposition was a 2-0 win at 1. FC Nürnberg in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage. • Hyypiä spent a decade at Liverpool from 1999 to 2009, making 318 Premier League appearances. • The Finn scored his first goal in English football in Liverpool's 3-2 home loss to United in September 1999 and earned his only red card as a Liverpool player in a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford in April 2003. Hyypiä's last away game as a Liverpool player was a 4-1 triumph at United in March 2009, leaving him with a record at Old Trafford of W4 D0 L5. He was also in the Liverpool side that beat United 2-0 in the 2003 League Cup final. • Moyes and Hyypiä were involved in ten Merseyside derby fixtures against each other as Everton manager and Liverpool player respectively. Hyppia won five times with Moyes prevailing twice. • Shinji Kagawa hit the only goal in Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 win against Leverkusen in February 2012. Overall his record against Leverkusen was W1 D1 L1. • Derdiyok scored in Switzerland's 2-1 friendly defeat in February 2008 against an England side including Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Young. • Nani and Emir Spahić were both on the scoresheet when the former's Portugal beat the latter's Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-2 in a UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying play-off in Lisbon. http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2014/matches/round=2000479/match=2011767/prematch/background/index.html |

It is hard to believe that when FC Barcelona host AFC Ajax in Wednesday's UEFA Champion League Group H curtain-raiser, it will be the first meeting between two clubs with a rich history in European competition. They have plenty of shared connections though, especially in the legendary figure of Johan Cruyff, who swapped Ajax for Barcelona in 1973 after claiming three straight European Champion Clubs' Cups during nine trophy-laden years in Amsterdam. He soon became the darling of the Camp Nou, hitting 48 goals in 143 games and helping the Blaugrana clinch their first Spanish title in 14 years in 1974. A three-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, Cruyff turned his hand to coaching and took over at Ajax in 1985 where he lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup. Another old flame beckoned three years later as he returned to Barcelona, steering them to their maiden European Cup in 1992, with ex-Ajax defender Ronald Koeman netting the winner against UC Sampdoria in the Wembley showpiece. Barça collected four consecutive Liga championships under Cruyff between 1991 and 1994 – during which time midfielder Richard Witschge and Cruyff's son Jordi brought an extra Dutch flavour to Catalonia. Louis van Gaal, a UEFA Champions League winner as Ajax boss in 1995, took the reins from Sir Bobby Robson in 1997. A strong influx of his compatriots – including Winston Bogarde, Michael Reiziger, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars and the De Boer twins – subsequently helped Barcelona to two Spanish titles and UEFA Super Cup success in 1997. Former Netherlands centre-back Frank Rijkaard, who finished his playing days with Ajax, became the next Dutchman to fill the Camp Nou hot seat in 2003. Edgar Davids arrived on loan from Juventus the following campaign before Barcelona captured European club football's most prized trophy in 2006. More recently, defender Maxwell and forward Zlatan Ibrahimović have made the switch from Ajax, yet only a handful of players have headed in the opposite direction. Michael Laudrup linked up with Ajax for the 1997/98 season, three years after leaving Barcelona. Midfielder Roger García also played out his career at the Amsterdam ArenA, as did versatile defender Oleguer Presas. Last term, loanee Isaac Cuenca reinforced Frank de Boer's team and he was joined in July by latest recruit Bojan Krkić, who burst onto the Barcelona scene as a teenager in 2007. Meanwhile, the only man to have played for and coached both sides, Johan Cruyff, is savouring a historic occasion. "It is great for football that these teams are playing. Barcelona are a great side and play nice football. Ajax are eager to do the same, but Barcelona have more experience. The clubs share a nice history," he said. http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=1993726.html?rss=1993726+the+illustrious+connections+of+barcelona+and+ajax |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Manchester United Vs Bayer Leverkusen: UCL (4 - 2) On 17th Sept 2013 by siddiq202(m): 11:39pm On Sep 14, 2013 |
David Moyes's first taste of the UEFA Champions League as Manchester United FC manager comes against a Bayer 04 Leverkusen side whose coach Sami Hyypiä needs no introduction. • For United this is their 18th consecutive UEFA Champions League campaign but for Moyes, it is his first taste of the group stage of a competition that the English title holders won twice under his predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson. • This is also the first UEFA Champions League fixture as a coach for Leverkusen's Sami Hyypiä, a winner as a player with Liverpool FC in 2005. Previous meetings • Leverkusen overcame United on away goals when the clubs met for the first time in the 2001/02 semi-finals. • That tie began with a 2-2 first-leg draw at Old Trafford, United leading twice through a Boris Živković own goal (29) and Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty (67) and Leverkusen responding through Michael Ballack (62) and Oliver Neuville (75). Neuville's 45th-minute equaliser back in Germany cancelled out a Roy Keane goal (28), earning Klaus Toppmöller's Leverkusen a 1-1 draw on the night and victory on away goals. • Ryan Giggs is the only survivor in either squad of that 2002 meeting at Old Trafford while Phil Neville, now United's first-team coach, was an 18th-minute substitute for his brother Gary. Giggs played in the return leg too, with Phil Neville an unused substitute. Dimitar Berbatov, a future United player, featured in both games for Leverkusen. • United avenged that defeat by beating Leverkusen home and away in the next season's first group stage. Giggs and Neville played in United's 2-1 away success in September 2002, Van Nistelrooy (31, 44) scoring twice before Berbatov (52) pulled a goal back. • United then prevailed 2-0 back at Old Trafford, Juan Sebastian Verón (42) and Van Nistelrooy (69) scoring after Jan Šimák's early penalty miss for the visitors. United advanced to the second group stage as section winners, with Leverkusen in second place. • The lineups for that last encounter in Manchester were: Manchester United: Ricardo, O'Shea, Blanc (G Neville 77), Ferdinand, Silvestre, Beckham (Solskjær 78), Verón, Fortune, Giggs (Chadwick 81), Scholes, Van Nistelrooy. Leverkusen: Butt, Živković, Kleine, Ramelow, Sebescen, Balitsch (Preuss 81), Babic, Šimák, Bierofka (Dogan 78), Berbatov (Franca 62), Brdaric. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Galatasaray Vs Real Madrid : UCL (1 - 6) On 17th September 2013 by siddiq202(m): 11:32pm On Sep 14, 2013 |
Galatasaray AŞ and Real Madrid CF begin a new UEFA Champions League campaign with memories still fresh of last season's quarter-final when the nine-time champions prevailed. The opening fixture in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League offers Galatasaray AŞ the chance of revenge over the side who ended their hopes in last season's quarter-finals. Real Madrid CF went on to depart in the semi-finals for the third successive season and the Spanish giants start again with the aim of lifting Europe's greatest club prize for a tenth time. Previous meetings • Last season's contest was effectively decided in the Madrid first leg with the home team easing to a 3-0 win courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín. • Ronaldo extended Madrid's advantage in the Istanbul return before a three-goal burst from Emmanuel Eboué (57), Wesley Sneijder (70) and Didier Drogba (72) gave Galatasary hope. Ronaldo's third of the tie in added time eased Madrid's progress to a 24th semi-final. • The lineups at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on 9 April 2013 were: Galatasaray: Muslera, Eboué (Elmander 80), Gökhan Zan, Semih Kaya, Riera, Hamit Altıntop (Amrabat 46), Felipe Melo, Selçuk İnan, Sneijder, Umut Bulut (Sabri Sarıoğlu 63), Drogba. Madrid: Diego López, Essien (Arbeloa 31), Varane, Pepe, Fábio Coentrão, Di María, Khedira, Modrić, Özil (Albiol 81), Ronaldo, Higuaín (Benzema 73). • The clubs' three previous encounters all took place in 2000/01, starting with Galatasaray's 2-1 triumph in the UEFA Super Cup in Monaco. Although Raúl González's 79th-minute penalty cancelled out a Mário Jardel (41) spot kick, Jardel's second goal on 103 minutes secured Galatasaray a second European honour three months after their UEFA Cup triumph – a first for a Turkish team. • Three players who took part in the UEFA Super Cup game are now part of Galatasaray's coaching staff: goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel and midfield duo Hasan Şaş and Ümit Davala. • The same trio were also involved as a Galatasaray side coached by Mircea Lucescu made life awkward for Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals later that season. The games followed a similar course to last season's last-eight meetings, the Turkish side winning 3-2 in Istanbul. Iván Helguera (33) and Claude Makelele (43) put Madrid 2-0 up but Galatasaray responded through Ümit Davala's penalty (47), Hasan Şaş (66) and Jardel (75). • Vicente del Bosque's Madrid shrugged off that loss with a 3-0 win back in the Spanish capital as Raúl (15, 37) and Helguera (28) took the defending champions through to a semi-final they would lose against FC Bayern München. • Iker Casillas is the only survivor of those games 12 years ago. • Last season's defeat of Madrid ended Galatasaray's 12-game winless run against Spanish sides – featuring four draws and eight losses – stretching back to their 2001 success against the Merengues http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2014/matches/round=2000479/match=2011769/prematch/background/index.htmlCL |

Eklektika: I go with Eklecktika. I think Dele Ayenugba is no more relevant because goal keeping is more than just to save PK. The guy is a specialist. No be beans for a coach to always sub his number one for him whenever a match ends in PK. So I think Dele could be the one to stop him. |

U09ce: Subhanallah. While our brothers and sisters are out there wallowing in abject poverty in Somalia, Afghanistan, Niger, Mali etc the Saudis are trying to break world records in vanity skyscrapers. Wallahi this is very disheartening to the Muslim world. But the Prophet (SAW) informed of all these current happenings towards the end of the world. I read somewhere in the book :The End of the World, that towards the end of time, tall buildings will be built in Makkah emerging higher than the surrounding mountains in the Haram; which is now evident with the Abraj al bayt dwarfing the mountains. May Allah (SWA) increase us in Eeman in these difficult times and save us from the fitnahs of the end times. @bold Below is the hadith; tbaba1234: Ibn Shaybah narrated with his Isnaad from Ya'la ibn 'Ata that his father said, "I was holding the reins of Abdullah ibn 'Amr (r.a.) and he said: "How will you be when you destroy the House (Ka'abah) and do not leave one stone on top of another? They asked, "Will we still be Muslims?" He said, "You will still be Muslims." They asked, "Then what?" He said: "Then it (the Ka'abah) will be rebuilt in the most beautiful way. When you see tunnels built in Makkah and you see its buildings taller than its mountains, know that the matter (The Hour) is close at hand." European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Manchester United Vs Crystal Palace (2 - 0) On 14th September 2013 by siddiq202(m): 8:10pm On Sep 12, 2013 |
Manchester United manager David Moyes will be out to secure his first win at Old Trafford when they face newly promoted Crystal Palace. The defending Premier League champions head into the game against Ian Holloway's men after suffering a 1-0 defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool before the international break. United are just one point ahead of Palace, who earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over Sunderland at Selhurst Park, after the first three games, with their only success coming on the opening day against Swansea City. The defeat at Anfield - which followed a dour 0-0 home draw with Chelsea - marked the first time that United have failed to score in consecutive league matches since 2007. However, Moyes, who never won at the home of United while in charge of Everton, should be confident of earning his first victory on home soil against a Palace team that has collected just 25 points from their last 24 league games on their travels. United will be boosted by the presence of Marouane Fellaini, a deadline-day signing from Everton in midfield, but Wayne Rooney misses out with a head injury. Phil Jones (ankle) and Rafael (hamstring) are also doubts, and Palace will travel north with some hope having beaten United in the League Cup in 2011. If they are to repeat that feat on Saturday, then they will have to do it without Holloway on the sidelines after he was handed a two-game ban for comments made about referee Mark Clattenburg in the aftermath of their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham. Although he will not be able to send out instructions directly from the touchline, the former Blackpool boss is excited at the prospect of facing United, and insists that his team will produce a positive showing. "Let's enjoy it. I'm excited by all these games, but it's just another game," Holloway said. "I believe the lads are getting together and believe they can get to grips with this division. "I certainly won't be parking the bus. We have to go there and make a good account of ourselves. "Palace beat Man United in the cup two years ago, I watched it on television. Can we go there and do it again? "All I want is a performance. Let’s see what we can do." Still, Holloway will have to deal with a clutch of injuries, with Paddy McCarthy (groin), Yannick Bolasie (hamstring), Jerome Thomas (ankle) and Glenn Murray (knee) all still unavailable, while new signing Jack Hunt has a broken ankle. Florian Marange, Stephen Dobbie and Owen Garvan have all been omitted from the 25-man squad. http://ng.soccerway.com/news/2013/September/12/premier-league-preview-manchester-united-v-crystal-palace/n239648/ |

Krasid: Modric plays the role of a Central Midfielder, his major role is to direct play and hold on to possession, Whilst Isco and Ozil plays the role of an attacking midfielder, they are expected to provide the assist for the strikers and help them by scoring some goals sometimes. Modric also assume the role of an attacking midfielder and sometimes a winger. Depending on which coach he's playing for. Even Ancelloti said he can play in more than one position. What does it take to convert a player not to talk of someone that is fantastic whenever he plays the role.So my question is siddiq202: I noticed since Ozil left Real, there has been talk about how the burden will be on Isco without anyone mentioning Modric. Why is it so please? Is Modric not up to the task yet? |
