The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has kicked off the 2020 recruitment exercise for new officers according to Police spokesman Frank Mba.

Applications are expected from Interested Nigerians who are aged between 17 to 25 years and must possess a minimum of five credits, including English and Mathematics, in WASSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB.

Additionally, applicants must be medical, physical, and psychologically fit and must not be less than 1.67m tall for males and 1.64m tall for females (female applicants must not be pregnant at the time of the recruitment).

Uba further disclosed that all recruitment processes will be done online.

Mba noted that applicants that meet the requirements from the online registration would be invited for physical screening at all state commands, including FCT Command, from 24th August 2020 to 30th August 2020....

The Federal Government has announced that Federal Government Colleges aka Unity Schools will be barred from writing the forthcoming WAEC.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu made this disclosure at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adamu said: ‘This is not the right time to reopen’ adding that WAEC should suspend the exams while encouraging State Governments to toe FG line”.

Kendall Ananyi who was reportedly accused of sexual harassment has been reinstated as the CEO of Tizeti after ‘an Independent Special Investigation Committee appointed by its Board of Directors concluded ‘that a case of sexual harassment had not been established.’

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has launched a course on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), in the context of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

This online course is available to the general public but targeted at health care workers, to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases while administering health care in Nigeria.

OPay, the Opera-owned fintech firm, has announced that it is pausing some of its O-businesses including ORide, OCar, and OExpress; dealing a huge blow to its super app plans and ambitions.

OPay in a statement shared on its verified Twitter handle said that the pause or shutdown of these services was “largely due to the harsh business conditions which have affected many Nigerian companies, including ours, during this COVID-19 pandemic the lockdown and government ban.”

Before their extradition to the US, Dubai police recently confirmed that Raymond Olorunwa Abbas (Hushpuppi) and Olalekan Jacob Ponle aka Woodberry were in their custody over allegations of fraud involving huge sums of money. This confirmation of their arrest came weeks after they were arrested.

MTN has disclosed that it will host the virtual launch of its 5G commercial network in South Africa on June 30 according to CEO Godfrey Motsa who will be present with other officials.

MTN will join Rain and Vodacom Group in the race to introduce 5G technology in the country.

Rain launched the country’s first commercial 5G network in partnership with China’s Huawei Technologies in 2019.

Google has launched Google for Nonprofits in Nigeria to empower not-for-profit organizations by providing them with free premium services.

For organizations that qualify, Google for Nonprofits gives access to a collection of premium apps – the same tools large enterprise corporations use – at no cost.

Once approved, qualifying nonprofits can gain access to programs such as Google Ad Grants, G-Suite for Nonprofits, YouTube’s nonprofit program, and more.

This assists nonprofit organizations to work more quickly and efficiently to reach a wider audience, spur more supporters to take action, and tell their story in a more compelling way.

Nonprofits can qualify for a grant of up to $10,000 a month that is available for six months through October 2020, to spend on text-based ads among other offerings.

For an NPO to be eligible for the Google for Nonprofits program, it must be a registered nonprofit charitable organization in Nigeria and verified by TechSoup Nigeria.

It must also meet eligibility criteria listed on the Google for Nonprofits page.

“Nonprofits face unique challenges when making decisions about what technology to acquire amid competing demands for funding and resources.

"Our overall goal is to provide access to tools and technology quickly and effectively so that these organizations can focus their efforts and resources directly towards achieving their goals,” says Titi Akinsanmi, Head, Government Affairs and Public Policy, West Africa, Google.

Google also announced its philanthropic arm, Google.org will be giving the grant to Teach for Nigeria, a non-profit organization focused on support for students in underserved communities in Nigeria while the COVID-19 school closures persist.

The grant will fund a 2-year teacher fellowship program to ensure more students in underserved communities get access to quality education, delivered by well-trained teaching staff.

It will also fund an educational intervention program to help children in underserved areas get an education through alternative means like TV, radio and on-the-street public communications.

Google training resources and programs for upskilling teachers working in target communities will be deployed, and Google Digital Skills training curriculum and resources will be leveraged for this program.

“Our plan is to provide support and create partnerships that will ensure that children from underserved communities are able to access the required level of education during these times,” Akinsanmi says.

“Teach for Nigeria is working towards developing platforms that allow Nigeria’s educational system to support all children to thrive and create a better future for themselves and their communities.

"Now more than ever, we must do whatever can be done to ensure that quality and relevant learning is happening, for all our children regardless of where they are on the map.

Google has announced 20 African startups that will participate in the 5th cohort of Google for Startups Accelerator Africa (formerly launchpad).

Ejike Asiegbu

Ejike Asiegbu is a Nigerian film actor and film director who once served as President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
