![]() Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan GCFR, GCON (born 20 November 1957) is a Nigerian politician who served as the President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. Before attaining the most powerful position in Nigeria, he served as Vice President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010 and as Governor of Bayelsa State from 2005 to 2007. As Buhari prepares to exit in 2023, there have been unconfirmed rumours that he may likely contest for the post of president again. If Goodluck Ebele Jonathan decides to contest, here are 16 Powerful Reasons Former President Goodluck Jonathan Won't Win in 2023. 1.) Goodluck Jonathan has always been riding on luck. He attained political positions upon the downfall of another person. He became governor of Bayelsa state from 2005 to 2007. He later became President after the death of Umaru Yaradua. 2.) He did not achieve anything as President. Just like every other Nigerian government, he promised heaven and earth but delivered nothing. Hence, there are no chances of Goodluck winning. 3.) He is a sectional leader. From the way he dresses, it is obvious he Niger Delta man to the core. He did not hide his loyalty to the region as many people he surrounded himself with were from the region. He did this while neglecting other regions. 4.) His political base is very weak does not cut across. When he won the Presidential elections, Nigerians voted for him out of solidarity. It is not that he achieved so much after he completed Yaradua's tenure. This was perhaps why he failed woefully when he wanted a second term and Buhari thrashed him. His support base is mainly the Niger-Delta 5.) He was the weakest leader Nigeria ever had. During his time as President, many described him as a figurehead. A man who could not take decisions and a man who depended heavily on his kinsmen and wife to take action. 6.) He refused to act during the kidnap of Chibok girls. Nigerians are yet to forget that. He had the opportunity to order the immediate rescue of the Chibok. At first, he never believed that there was a kidnap. When he finally accepted that fact, it was too late. 7.) He is in the opposition. So money and winning will be a problem. This is because he has very few PDP governors in power that would bankroll his presidential bid. 8.) He allowed Boko Haram to fester without doing anything. Goodluck Jonathan was sceptical about tackling the insurgency group. He allowed Boko Haram to fester to the extent that it has become one of the world's most potent terrorist groups. 9.) He was controlled and dictated to by his wife- Patience Jonathan. Patience Jonathan, an alpha female was rumoured to be the pseudo-president because Goodluck was too weak to take the difficult decisions. 10.) Corruption. Goodluck Jonathan's administration was considered by many as a very corrupt government. Almost everyone had access to the cookie jar and it is a question of how much you can steal. The EFCC died under Goodluck. 11.) Goodluck is not respected internationally. Since Goodluck was weak locally, it reflected negatively on our international diplomacy as many of our international friends simply sidelined Nigeria when it comes to funds, security and technical support. A good example is countries of the world refusing to help Nigeria to fight the insurgency. 12.) He betrayed the trust of his political godfathers. After his tenure as elected president, he promised he was going to leave. However, he refused and contest election which he woefully lost. Part reason for this is that he did not get support from his political godfathers. 13.) He made militants and ethnic groups very rich by giving them security contract. It was during his time that militant groups had so much power. The likes of Asari Dokubo and Government Tompolo became so rich from the security contract that Dokubo established a university in the Benin Republic and not even in the Niger Delta. 14.) His political relevance or influenced has waned since he left power. The truth is he is politically irrelevant in the scheme of things in Nigeria. His power is only in the Niger Delta. He cannot pull any strings in other parts of the country. 15.) It will be very difficult for him to win because Northerners will definitely not support him. 16.) He is in the PDP which is perceived by many Nigerians as the main contributor to a failed Nigeria. As long as he is in the PDP, it might be difficult for him to win if he decides to contest. https://cdn-af.feednews.com/news/detail/3a1dae96595bb3c6a2e3f883f8ce9ae6 |

![]() Every Sunday, you pick your bible and attend church service. The main reason why you are attending church is to worship God and get request for his unlimited blessings. However, unknown to some people who religiously attend Church, God is angry with them because of the things they do in Church. As such they are waisting their time praying because God won't accept their prayers. In line with this, we share some things that you do that is making God and Jesus angry. If you are doing it, please stop it. Your dress to church is not decent Although there is no particular dress code for Church, God has given us the intuition to know the difference between decent and indecent dressing. Women should try as much as possible not to expose their assets and avoid tight fitting dresses that show the curves. For men, don't wear slashed jeans or plait your hair to church. You fiddling with your phone while pastor is preaching The time you spend in church is for you to listen attentively without any distraction. However, some churchgoers are so addicted to their phones that they keep fiddling with it without listening to what pastor is saying. What is the essence of you attending church then? You refuse to give no matter how small No matter what, you should give money in Church no matter the amount. Like they always say, no amount is too small. Even 100 naira is enough. But every Sunday, you attend church and don't bother to give. You will continue to pray but God and Jesus will just transfer your blessing to another person. Your phone rings in Church Despite the fact that it is boldly written that switch off your phone or put it on silence, some stubborn churchgoer's phone still rings and go as far as picking the call in Church. It simply shows you don't have respect for God and Jesus. God help you let your phone ring in Church when God decides to bless and answer your prayers. You don't praise God and Jesus During praise and worship, you cannot open your mouth to praise God and Jesus, then you are not ready for His blessings. You feel too big to praise God but have the guts to ask God what you want. You will wait forever for God's blessing. Be humble and praise God. https://cdn-af.feednews.com/news/detail/68aba329d9f10fa55d7607d1c7f22016 |

![]() For the umpteenth time, some banks in Ondo State, South-West Nigeria have suffered and experienced a violent and bloody robbery attack. Yet the police and the state governor have no answers to these daredevil robbers Just this last Thursday, the robbers acted the same script as they always do. They came in their numbers heavily armed, shot sporadically in the air, stray bullets hit some people, killed some policemen, robbers used dynamite to gain entry and carted away huge sums of money. As expected the police were nowhere near the robbery scene. So, for 45 minutes, the daylight robbers had a good day. Sadly, this is not the first time, nor second or third time this kind of robbery is happening in Ondo State. To this end, we share a timeline of these bloody robbery attacks on banks in Ondo according to newspaper reports. 1.) April 2019-Seven persons lost their lives in a bank robbery that lasted for about one hour in Ido-Ani, headquarters of Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State. 5 officials of the bank and two customers were killed by the robbers, while one of the robbers was shot dead by the police. Also, it was learnt that a police officer was killed by the robbers during the operation. 2.) August 2019-Two people were reportedly killed when suspected armed robbers attacked an old generation bank in Iju-Itaogbolu, Akure North local council area of Ondo state. The robbers numbering about eight invaded the town and divided themselves into two groups before they commenced the operation. Many people were injured and about two people were killed. 3.) January 2015-The violent robbery took place in Ikare Akoko, headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government as armed robbers killed 15 persons in a daylight operation. The robbers came in two vehicles painted in military colours while the robbers wore mobile police uniforms. 4.) March 2015- A host of armed robbers reportedly stormed Owo town in Ondo state on Thursday, March 26, attacking banks and residents of the town. According to reports, a bank manager was shot dead in the operation that lasted about two hours. It was also gathered that other people, including onlookers and passersby, were killed and several others injured, and one of the banks attacked was reportedly set ablaze. 5.) March 2017-No fewer than five people were reportedly killed by some armed robbers in Ogbagi Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State following a bank robbery attack. Among the deceased were the security man attached to the bank, a policeman, a septuagenarian and two other people. It was gathered that the men of the Nigerian Army arrived at the scene some minutes after the robbers had finished the operation and left. 6.) October 2017-Armed robbers have attacked a bank in Ifon at the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo state. The robbers numbering over twenty were said to have moved into some strategic locations when they entered the town. It was gathered that the robbers killed at least two policemen who wore mufti and engaged them a gun duel. 7.) June 2010-This robbery was unique because it was commandeered by a 23-year-old woman. Five persons were killed and no fewer than 20 others sustained gunshot wounds. The hoodlums arrived the two new generation banks in an 18-seater bus through the Owo/Benin road. The dare-devil gang then headed for their target- the two banks which were adjacently located in Ilemo Street off Oba Adesida Road in Akure metropolis. 8.) Nov 2011- A 12- man armed robbery gang has invaded a bank along Oyemekun Road, Akure, the capital of Ondo State, killing no fewer than 15 customers of the bank. The robbers arrived the bank at about 1 PM and started shooting sporadically for about two hours in order to scare away security details and customers around the bank. It is unfortunate that successive Ondo administrations and the police have yet to nip these violent bank robberies in the bud. Although the police have arrested some suspects, they need to do more. This is perhaps the reason why Akeredolu is in full support of Amotekun. Indeed, the people of Ondo will continue to live in fear because they know the robbers will return. It's just a question of when would they come back. On the part of the banks, maybe it's time to have their own security apparatus in Ondo or completely pull of the state because the life of staff members are always at risk. We hope the Ondo state government, the CBN, Banks and the Ondo State Police command will work together to end these intermittent robberies in Ondo State. https://cdn-af.feednews.com/news/detail/54ece277d3a814482713a440ff601f44 |

![]() Politics in Nigeria is not child's play. It is very complex because it is sprinkled with a lot of shenanigans, tricks and gimmicks. One of such shenanigans is the role of godfathers in Nigerian politics. The truth-it is near impossible to win an election in Nigeria without having a godfather. Hence, politicians and Nigerians interested in politics become stooges to the so-called godfathers. They need their financial and political backing to win an election. The situation is worsened by the lack of independent candidacy. There are quite a number of godfathers in Nigeria and here are some of them. Mind you being a godfather is not really a bad thing. Bola Ahmed Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu is perhaps the godfather of all godfathers. He is very powerful that no politician in Lagos can be elected without directly or indirectly seeking his support. In Nigeria, his support is very important if you want to become a senator, house representative member, vice president and president. This is why he is called Jagaban Borgu! Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Chief Olusegun Obasanjo may no longer be the president of Nigeria but he is still a godfather. If he endorses a candidate for any elective role in Nigeria, he or she has a good chance of winning. This is same for non-elective positions. This is why during elections in Nigeria, candidates troop to his home for meetings. Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan may be one of the weakest presidents Nigerians have ever elected, it has not diminished his power as a godfather. He was instrumental to David Lyon winning the recent Governorship elections in Bayelsa. He is also an important man to the People's Democratic Party. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida popularly known as IBB, is a Nigerian statesman, lowkey godfather and military general who served as military President of Nigeria from 1985 until his resignation in 1993. IBB may be quiet and not say anything about national politics, it does not take away the fact that politicians pay him a visit to seek his support and endorsement. Theophilus Danjuma General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma is a Nigerian soldier, politician, multi-millionaire businessman and philanthropist. He was Nigerian Army Chief... ![]() In August last year, OBus, the bus-hailing service of OPay, was launched. OBus joined the ever-growing list of digital services that OPay, an Opera owned business is offering Nigerians. However, in November 2019, OPay temporarily suspended the operations of OBus due to the nefarious activities of the Lagos Branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and area boys. Contrary to the reports that the bus-hailing service was suspended due to the activities of NURTW, an OPay rep told Techpoint that the bus-hailing service has not been suspended. According to the rep, "Rather than an outright suspension, they are currently restrategising to double down on the third party business model, which enables bus owners and vendors lease their buses to OBus." The rep added: "The current model violates the principle of sustainability. But, in my opinion, the interstate bus transit model seems like the best option after this.” Since the temporary suspension, we have not heard anything about OBus-whether it is going to make a return or not. Techawk decided to reach out to the bus-hailing service and we can authoritatively and exclusively tell you that the service will definitely make a return. According to Director of Operations, Ridwan Olalere, he told Techawk that they are working to reposition OBus for better scale. "Launched in beta phase, we are changing our business model for OBus to optimize for better scale. "We plan to roll out the product in the coming months to achieve more scale which in turn means the service will be available to more customers. "We remain committed to providing essential transportation services to Nigerians across various economic classes", Olalere said. Many customers would like to have the bus-hailing service hit the highways again. However, when OBus eventually makes its much-awaited return, the bus-hailing service of OPay will meet a strong competition in PlentyWaka which is somewhat filling the void left by OBus. https://www.techawkng.com/2020/01/31/would-obus-make-a-return/ |

![]() On-demand motorcycle startups like ORide by OPay, Gokada and MaxOkada have been caught in the web of the Lagos State Government (LASG) ban on commercial motorcycles popularly called 'okadas' and tricycles. The Lagos State Government proscribed operations of motorcycles in six Local Government Areas (LGAs), nine Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 10 major highways across the State with effect from February 1. LASG directed security operatives to embark on a total enforcement of the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 to immediately address the chaos and disorderliness created by illegal operations of okada and tricycle riders in restricted areas. Besides, the Government also banned Okada and tricycles from plying 40 bridges and flyovers across the state. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, made the announcement at the State House in Alausa. He said the measures were taken by the Government in response to “scary figures” of fatal accidents recorded from operations of Okada and tricycles in the State between 2016 and He said the measures were taken by the Government in response to “scary figures” of fatal accidents recorded from operations of Okada and tricycles in the State between 2016 and 2019. Omotoso said the lack of regard for the Lagos Traffic Laws by the motorcycle and tricycle riders had resulted in preventable loss of lives, adding that their impermissible movements on restricted highways had also contributed to traffic jams. Omotoso said the enforcement would be total, warning that the Government would deal with violators in accordance with the Laws. He added that there would be zero tolerance for the movement of the banned vehicles on the listed highways and bridges. According to the Commissioner, operations of Okada and Keke NAPEP have been banned in the following LGAs and LCDAs: Apapa LGA, Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LGA, Yaba LCDA, Surulere LGA, Itire-Ikate LCDA, and Coker-Aguda LCDA. Others are Ikeja LGA, Onigbongbo, LCDA, Ojodu LCDA, Eti-Osa LGA, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, and Iru-Victoria Island LCDA, Lagos Island LGA and Lagos Island East LCDA. Although the Lagos State Government did not directly mention the on-demand motorcycles in the statement, it appears to be blanket ban on all commercial motorcycles regardless of whether they are on-demand or not. Apparently, ORide by OPay, Gokada and MaxOkada have been in talks with both Lagos State Government and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). It was rumoured then that the LASG will slam an operational license fee of N25 million on them and as for the NURTW, they reportedly agreed to pay a daily fee of N500 to operate freely without harassment. Despite this, the Lagos State Government recently clamped down on some of the on-demand motorcycle startups impounding hundreds of bikes. This was perhaps the reason why SafeBoda, a Ugandan on-demand motorcycle startup opted for Ibadan instead of Lagos to launch its business. The ban on motorcycles or okadas is a welcome development. However, the on-demand motorcycle startups should be exempted from the ban because they are a bit safe and are more organised than the regular okadas. What next for ORide by OPay, Gokada and MaxOkada in Lagos State? https://www.techawkng.com/2020/01/27/lagos-government-bans-motorcycle/ |

![]() When a violent murder is committed like the one of Fatai Yusuf aka Oko Oloyun, a popular alternative medicine practitioner, many expect a full investigation by the Nigeria Police-suspects arrested, prosecuted and sentenced. But this is not the case in Nigeria as family members of Oko Oloyun may never get closure because of Nigeria's failed invistigative and long, cumbersome judicial process. Oko Oloyun was shot dead on the Eruwa-Igboora road in Ibarapa central area of Oyo state when his convoy was attacked by gunmen on Thursday. Since his death, the Nigerian police has swung into investigation and Olugbenga Fadeyi, spokesman of the Oyo state police command, said after the discovery of fraud , there was a fire outbreak at Yusuf’s office which destroyed some account records. The fire incident, he said, also lends credence to the belief that Yusuf was killed because of the fraud he supposedly detected. He added that investigation is ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators of the crime and bring them to book. It's good that the Nigerian police is conducting investigations on Oko Oloyun's murder. However, down the years, the Nigerian police has shown its inability to resolve murders. There have been numerous murders that were inconclusive and abandoned with the killers either roaming the streets or in jail awaiting trial. Two political killings stands out-That of Bola Ige and Funsho Williams. The Nigerian police is yet to tell us who killed these duo and the family members are yet to get closure. This closure unknown to many provides a bit of succour to family members knowing that the killers of their loved one have been put away in jail. ![]() Lagos is often regarded as a no man's land. In other words, nobody owns Lagos. As such anything goes in the state. This is why over the years, there has been a steady rise in the number of Okadas and Tricycle in the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. For the Okadas, they have become notorious for flouting traffic rules and have become a waiting army to attack anyone who get into a dispute with them. Their mantra is an injury to one is an injury to all. Not sounding tribalistic or divisive, these Okada riders are from the North. It has been alleged that some of the riders who have no place of abode in Lagos, pay a random driver to ferry them down to the city and within few days, you find the person riding Okada. He sleeps and wakes up on his Okada. Tricycles are no different from the Okadas, they act as if they own the roads. They park indiscriminately and take any passage as long as the tricycle can pass through. As such a section of Lagosians have called on Governor Sanwoolu to place an outright ban on Okadas and Tricycles. It must have been surprising to many Nigerians that Davido took his relationship with Chioma seriously considering the fact that many male entertainers are philanderers. Some people were waiting for the news that they have gone their separate ways, but were stunned after Davido proposed to Chioma. Unknown to these naysayers, Davido was madly in love with the chef. In fact, he released a song dedicated to... https://cdn-af.feednews.com/news/detail/7e38076d282b15881916f723acb302af |

![]() General Muhammadu Buhari as Punch refers to him, came into power in 2015 by projecting, marketing and selling himself as incorruptible. The man who will arrest, murder and imprison corruption which has eaten deep into every fabric of the Nigerian society. Beyond this, he described himself as a reformed Democrat despite warnings from critics that a leopard never changes his spots. On these premises among many others, Nigerians voted massively for Buhari. However, fast forward to 2020, the praises reigned on Buhari have ceased. They have been majorly replaced by criticisms of his open disregard for the rule of law and his disagreeable body language towards opposition. Buhari has reportedly used the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to clamp down on opposition. Two recent cases stand out-That of the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore and ex-Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sanni. Omoyele Sowore, who was formerly an unendorsed mouthpiece of Buhari and a presidential candidate in the 2019 elections; got into the bad books of the regime after he called for a revolution. This call made him a guest of the DSS for 125 days. The DSS ignored several court orders to release him and even invaded the Federal High Court, Abuja to rearrest him. The DSS couldn't let Sowore go then because the Presidency allegedly had not given the green light. But for the admirable efforts of Sowore's wife, Opeyemi and the intervention of the US government, Sowore would probably still be in jail. Shehu Sanni, who sold Buhari to Nigerians in 2015 is a known and vocal critic of Buhari. One cannot also ignore the fact that Sanni is not in good terms with Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai who is reportedly very close to Buhari. What did Shehu Sanni reportedly do? He has been accused of extortion and name-dropping. According to the Punch, "Sani was said to have demanded $20,000 from a car dealer, Alhaji Sani Dauda, the owner of ASD Motors, who gave him $10,000 and later complained to the EFCC." ![]() Chai! Thousands of Lagosians would wish that the festive season will never end. The partying, the lounging and the lazying around are gradually fading away as the festive season wears off. Residents of Lagos would have noticed a significant difference in the city during the festive period. Affairs and activities in the city appeared sane as many wish that things would remain the same. Ko jo! Ha...ha...ha...Stop deceiving brother and sista...it cannot happen. The Lagos madness will inescapably return! Whatever the case may be, here are things Lagosians do not want to see return as the festive season wears off. Traffic One of the biggest challenges that every Lagosian must encounter is the notorious traffic. The traffic is a true representation and reflection of Lagos. Workers in the city have to wake up as early as 5am to beat the morning traffic and spend hours in traffic when returning home. Lagosians spend an average of 30 hours in traffic each week. But during the festive season, the traffic was almost non-existent. Commuters who were still in the city traveled freely and in less than 20 minutes, they have arrived at their destination. People Thousands of Lagosians traveled to their hometown to celebrate Christmas and New Year which is why the city is a bit sane. Lagos is home to the good, the bad and the ugly. As such Lagos is always crowded with different kinds of people. This is why the phrase Shine Your Eye is very popular in the city. The Lagos madness The Lagos madness is real. People selling on the pavement, drivers in a shouting match after bashing each other's car. Do you know who I am ringing in the hears of onlookers. What about the danfos drivers who drive as if they own the road. There is no limit to the Lagos madness. Presently, there is a bit of sanity in the state as quite a number of people are yet to return from their travels. Insecurity Security is usually topnotch during the festive season in Lagos. This is to ensure that the festive season passes without any security breaches. This is not always the case when Lagos is crowded. https://cdn-af.feednews.com/news/detail/c5d7ba5da196b76a6404853dcbabdaaa |

Mr Kola-Ogunlade said the results of the ‘Year in Search’ offered a unique perspective on the year’s major moments and top trends based on searches conducted in Nigeria. “This year’s top trending news search is `ASUU Strike’, which took the highest place over other trending news topics like ‘AFCON 2019’, ‘Naira Marley’ and the ‘Women’s World Cup 2019’. “Naira Marley’, leads the list as the most searched person over ‘Atiku’ (Abubakar), Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party at the 2019 Nigerian general election. “Neymar’, Brazilian professional footballer. ‘Neymar’ made the lists as the top trending sports person searched by Nigerians in 2019,’’ Kola-Ogunlade said in a statement. ![]() Jiji, an African focused digital classified platform has raised $21 million in Series C and C-1 funding from six investors, led by Knuru Capital. Jiji has offices in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania and provides thousands of buyers and sellers with an avenue to meet and exchange goods and services. Founded in Lagos in 2014 by Anton Wolyansky and Ukrainian entrepreneur Vladimir Mnogoletniy, Jiji plans to use the $21 million to increase the overall number of buyers, sellers, and transactions on its site. Part of the investment will be used to upgrade the platform to create more listings and faster matching in the area of real-estate. For Mnogoletniy, he said: “We are the largest marketplace in Africa where people can sell pretty much anything…We are like a combination of eBay and Craigslist for Africa." The classifieds site has two million listings on its Africa platforms and hit eight million unique monthly users in 2018, per company stats. In April this year, Jiji acquired the assets of Naspers owned online marketplace OLX in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. OLX was Jiji's main competitor before the acquisition. Jiji’s top three categories for revenues and listings (in order) are vehicle sales, real estate, and electronics sales (namely mobile phones). With the recent funding, the company’s total capital raised from 2014 to 2019 comes to $50 million. For now, Jiji doesn’t have plans for country expansion or company purchases. “Maybe at some point we will consider more acquisitions, but for the time being we’d like to focus on those five markets,” Mnogoletniy said. https://www.techawkng.com/2019/04/03/jiji-acquires-olx/ |

![]() Xecced Ventures, a London-based venture capital, has launched a $100 million fund to inverts in African startups. The venture capital firm is aiming to invest between $500 000 and $5-million in Industry 4.0 startups. Industry 4.0 technologies include artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and cognitive computing. Xecced Ventures principal Ibrahim Sanusi, said the fund made its first fundraising close last month at $70-million. He added that the fund is in the process of closing its first investment. Sanusi also revealed that the firm is exploring “co-investment synergies” with the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) without disclosing further details. The VC firm was spun out of think tank Xecced LLP last year by partner Muhtari Adanan and CIO James Rutley. The firm also claims it has proxies in “most African countries”. Sanusi explains that the fund is “unique” in the impact investing ecosystem as it invests in pre-seed to Series-B stages of Industry 4.0 African startups. “The ultimate goal is to mitigate against the impact of Industry 4.0 on Africa, for example 85% of jobs in Ethiopia risk being lost to Industry 4.0 according to a study,” said Sanusi. Sanusi said the VC firm sources deals by scouring the internet using AI as well as by building ecosystem, system dynamics and predictive models. In addition, Xecced Ventures also makes use of scouts as well as public and private partnerships. For startups looking to benefit from the funding, Sanusi pointed out that how a startup approaches Xecced Ventures gives the firm “some indication” of the founders’ sophistication and resourcefulness. He explained that when considering potential investments, the impact investor evaluates economic and social impact as well as return on investment in the context of the unfolding Fourth Industrial revolution. “Most development gurus believe Africa has less than seven to 10 years leeway before the Fourth Industrial Revolution closes the window of opportunity for Africa to execute the inclusive growth playbook used by North East Asian countries to rapidly industrialise,” said Sanusi. He added that the VC firm prioritises female entrepreneurship and also places added emphasis on inclusion, equity and equality. https://www.techawk.com.ng/2019/11/20/xecced-ventures-launches-fund/ |

The startup, which recently released its 3rd quarter report, said in a statement that after a thorough review of its investments in Cameroon, they concluded that its transactional portal is not suitable for the current context in the country. The statement continues: “This is why we took the difficult decision to suspend our ecommerce operations in Cameroon effective on 18th Nov 2019.” Despite its exit from Cameroon, the NYSE listed company said it will continue to provide support its classified portal-Jumia Deals. “We will continue to support buyers and vendors to do business online on our classifieds portal, previously called Jumia Deals and which will now be the main portal jumia.cm – thousands of buyers and vendors get in touch every month on this portal and we believe it will continue to become more and more relevant in the future.” The suspension may be as a result of the fact that it wants to streamline its business offerings in Africa, eventually break even and finally become profitable. https://www.techawk.com.ng/2019/11/18/jumia-suspends-operations-cameroon/ |

![]() Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is a development technique in which a new product or website is developed with sufficient features to satisfy early adopters. The final, complete set of features is only designed and developed after considering feedback from the product's initial users according to Techopedia. As an entrepreneur or founder, there are a lot of risks you face in business, it is, therefore, your responsibility to ensure that you have a Minimum Viable Product that won't fail when it's introduced to your prospective audience. This is one of the most difficult tasks of an entrepreneur because your Minimum Viable Product can determine if you will continue or halt your entrepreneurial journey depending on your attitude and disposition. The question now is how can you create a Minimum Viable Product that will interest customers? We share some helpful tips. Identify an actual problem Any innovative, viable and scalable idea or product must be aimed at solving a particular societal problem. This will ensure that the idea won't hit the rocks from the initial phase. No matter how fantastic your idea or product maybe, if it does not tackle a human problem; it will definitely fail. Before going further, ask three questions to figure out whether the path you’re heading down is a useful one: What problem is being solved? How is this product’s solution better than the competition? Is this an issue that occurs frequently enough to keep customers coming back? These questions are critical to a development process that will result in more than something that just seemed like a good idea at the time. Identify how the product will fit into users’ daily lives While it isn’t possible to check out every single use case for a product before it’s released, there are ways to get an idea of what typical use might look like. Develop representations of a variety of users with their own stories surrounding when and how they use the product. Knowing what the user is doing with your product helps bring a project into focus and indicates which features will be useful in the final product and which can be scrapped or delayed for future versions. Perform frequent A/B tests Just because a product works well for developers doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to do the same for real-world users. To avoid succumbing to unseen biases, perform A/B testing when possible to better capture customer preferences. A/B testing is a significant part of the Minimum Viable Product. It will help decide on which features, approach, design, and branding to be modified throughout multiple prototypes to best drive user behaviour and increase audience buy-in. Consider the design process & user flow Design the product in a way that is convenient for users. You need to look at the product from the user’s perspective, starting from opening the product to the final process, such as making a purchase or delivery. In addition, user flow is an important aspect as it ensures you do not miss anything while keeping the future product and its user satisfaction in mind. To define your user flow, it is necessary to define the process stages; and, for that, you need to explain the steps needed to reach the main objective. Build your MVP Once you have decided upon the main features and have learned about the market needs, you can create your MVP. Keep in mind that a prototype is not lower quality than a final product, and still needs to fulfil your customer’s needs. Therefore, it must be easy to use, engaging, and suitable for your users. https://www.techawk.com.ng/2019/08/16/how-create-a-minimum-viable-product-customers/ |

![]() The official Twitter handle for Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, @ProfOsinbajo, Nigeria's Vice President has become unverified. Investigations by Techawk reveal that Twitter first suspended the account which has 2.1 million followers before restoring it with the Vice President's profile picture and the blue verified badge of the account removed. According to Twitter, "The blue verified badge lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic. It appears next to the name on an account’s profile and next to the account name in search results." Twitter is yet to give any reason for unverifying the account since Yemi Osinbajo is a public figure and this meets the guidelines for verifying an account. However, the social media platform said clearly "It reserves the right to remove verification at any time without notice." Reasons for removal may reflect behaviors on and off Twitter that include: Intentionally misleading people on Twitter by changing one's display name or bio. Promoting hate and/or violence against, or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. Supporting organizations or individuals that promote the above. Inciting or engaging in harassment of others. Violence and dangerous behavior Directly or indirectly threatening or encouraging any form of physical violence against an individual or any group of people, including threatening or promoting terrorism. Violent, gruesome, shocking, or disturbing imagery Self-harm, suicide Engaging in activity on Twitter that violates the Twitter Rules. Other possible reasons why the verified badge was removed Yemi Osinbajo's Account has been hacked It is a surprise that the Twitter handle of Nigeria's number 2 citizen got unverified. One of the reasons that may be considered is that the account has been hacked. The Vice President has too many fake followers Techawk used like tools like sparktoro.com and fakers.statuspeople.com. For Sparktoro, it 23.4% (499,069) Fake Followers (This tool defines “fake followers” as accounts that are unreachable and will not see the account’s tweets (either because they’re spam, bots, propaganda, etc. or because they’re no longer active on Twitter) while fakers.statuspeople.com says 14% of the followers are fake, 46% inactive and 40% good. The Vice President while reacting to the loss through his media aide Laolu Akande tweeted that "there were failed attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Twitter Account." How to get verified on Twitter Although the Twitter Verified account program is currently on hold and not accepting any new requests at this time. Here is the process for getting verified: Have a profile photo Have a cover photo Use your real, official full name on your profile Include a website that you have either for yourself, your business, your publication, etc. Confirmed email address and phone number listed Have a public account Fill out the verification form and providing necessary identification documents, such as a Passport or other government-issued identification documents What types of accounts get verified? An account may be verified if it is determined to be an account of public interest. Typically this includes accounts maintained by users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas. A verified badge does not imply an endorsement by Twitter. Source: https://www.techawk.com.ng/2019/08/10/twitter-account-of-nigerias-vice-president-loses-verified-status/ 1 Like |

To commemorate this year’s Pan-African Women’s Day and in line with the global theme which addresses maternal and neonatal mortality in Africa, the female staff of Jumia Nigeria have rallied support for new mothers and other patients who couldn’t meet the discharge requirement as a result of unpaid medical bills at the Ikorodu general hospital by helping them to offset their outstanding bills. As a result, the patients have now been discharged and equipped with financial support to cater for the new babies. The contributions were channelled through the ‘Visit A Hospital Today’ non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Lagos. The African Women’s Day, created by the African Union is commemorated on July 31st of every year to advocate for quality maternity services for disadvantaged women who continue to die needlessly in underserved communities and to curb poor quality of health services, poor accessibility and weak referral systems for African women. Jumia’s public relations and communications manager, Mr Olukayode Kolawole who described the financial intervention on behalf of the new mothers as kind and thoughtful, said: “When I heard about the plight of these new mothers and other patients who couldn’t meet the hospital discharge requirement because of their outstanding medical bills, I sought for support from our female staff, especially those who are mothers to contribute towards raising the sum. This collective effort towards helping other women in need through their financial resources reached far beyond what we set out to raise. Now, these women have been discharged and the babies are receiving the needed motherly affection.” Founder of Visit-A-Hospital NGO, Miss Aderonke Rene Ahmed said hundreds of new mothers and women are always stuck in most hospitals because of lack of funds to pay for their medical bills. “Every week, we’re always in different hospitals providing financial support for these patients. We thank the wonderful women at Jumia Nigeria for sponsoring this month’s hospital visit.” Until now, these new mothers had been stuck at the general hospital with their babies for a few weeks because they couldn’t pay their medical bills. “Jumia’s intervention provided succour for them in the nick of time,” she added. |

![]() Customers of two of Nigeria's biggest eCommerce platforms, Konga and Jumia may be charged 5% Value Added Tax as from next year when they use bank cards to pay for their online purchases according to the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Tunde Fowler. Premium Times which spoke to Fowler quoted the FIRS boss as saying that: "With the existing laws in Nigeria, we can appoint the banks as agents. First of all, all those who make payments for purchases online using bank cards and instruct their bankers to pay, we will tell the banks that, going forward, everyone who gives instructions for service for purchase online, they should deduct five per cent VAT,” he said. “We are thinking that maybe early next year, we will advise banks to start deducting five per cent VAT for all online purchases done locally,” he added. It is interesting to note that today most customers of local eCommerce platforms prepay for their orders because they get cashback for choosing to prepay and it is also safer. However, if the 5% VAT is implemented, it may become a hindrance to the Central Bank of Nigeria's drive for a cashless economy because customers who do not want to pay the VAT may now choose the Pay On Delivery option. Therefore, charging the VAT is definitely not one of the most ingenious ways to boost Nigeria's digital economy and promote a cashless economy. It is simply an option being looked at by the government to boost tax revenue. In fact, the government should be considering how to grant tax breaks to eCommerce firms like Jumia and Konga whose operating costs are over the roof rather than planning to tax their customers which cut across Nigeria. ![]() Motorcycle-hailing startups like Gokada, Oride, SafeBoda and MaxOkada may have considered Lagos as a viable hub or haven for their on-demand motorcycle business. However, they are about to face some regulatory hurdles in the state according to several reports. The Lagos State Government (LASG) is proposing an annual licensing fee of N25 million to operate an on-demand motorcycle service in the state as part of local transportation infrastructure. Quartz reports that: "Under the proposed regulation, each startup will pay annual licensing fees of 25 million naira ($70,000) per 1,000 bikes and then 30,000 naira ($83) per bike after the first set of 1,000. The startups will also still be expected to pay annual taxes on revenue. Gokada, Oride and Max.ng, three of the major startups in the space, all have over 1,000 riders signed up to their service." The reason for the exorbitant licensing fee according to Quartz is due to the Lagos State's government aversion "to having commercial motorcycles for transport in Lagos given its long-term plans as it builds a mega-city. As such, the licensing fees are being seen as a tactic to frustrate the startups and raise the barrier to entry." It may interest you to know that "The regulations follow a series of meetings between executives at the biggest ride-hailing startups and the state government since the start of the year." Not Good News for Motorcycle-hailing Business Over the last few months, motorcycle-hailing startups have been making headlines as they unveiled grand plans and strategies to profer solutions to the horrible traffic in the state. Lagos commuters lose 75% of weekly working hours in traffic. To escape traffic, they result in taking the regular motorcycle popularly called Okada which is quite dangerous. Thus, the attractiveness of the motorcycle-hailing startups which are better structured and organised. Clearly, the proposed licencing fee, if actually implemented, would come as a source of concern for these businesses which have raised several millions of dollars and invested heavily in the business. MAX.ng, the pioneering Nigerian mobility startup, raised $7 million from an elite group of strategic and financial investors from the US, Europe, Asia and Africa while Gokada, a Nigerian motorcycle ride-hailing firm raised $5.3 million Series A round led by Rise Capital to scale its business. Riders are already facing harassment Sensing that the motorcycle-hailing startups are gaining ground, some members of the transport associations in Lagos like Road Transport Employers' Association Of Nigeria (RTEAN), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) are harassing and hassling riders of these motorcycle-hailing startups. The Associations want the riders to pay daily fees and this has inadvertently forced them to avoid some routes. As one executive put it: “Except government taxes, every other thing is extortion.” A history of banning Okada The Lagos State has a history of banning Okada in the state. The administration led by Babatunde Fashola banned Okadas in 2010 in some parts of the state to bring back sanity. The Okadas which swarm the city like mosquitoes constituted a nuisance in the state. However, the Okadas returned to Lagos streets during the tenure of Ambode and they have never looked back. Without doubt, the motorcycle-hailing startups would have considered all this before they decided to set up shop in Lagos. They must have hinged their decisions on the fact that they are safe, organised and structure. And sooner rather than later, the regular Okadas will die a natural death as prices continue to drop due to the competition. What next? If the Lagos State Government decides to enforce the licensing fee, the state will be sending wrong signals to potential investors that it is not ready for business. What the government should do is to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and not slamming a ridiculous fee on these startups that are barely 2-years-old in the state. Perhaps, the LASG should take a queue from the partnership between Ondo State Government and Max.ng. The collaboration was fast-tracked by both parties under the “SUNSHINESAFEBIKES” initiative. The motorcycle-hailing startups should continue engaging the government making them see reasons why it is important for them to be part of the state's long term transportation plan. If in any case, there should be a licensing fee, an acceptable and reasonable amount should be charged.
