To protect them from hawks, go and buy red dye, paint dem all over. Hawk will be scared of them till the color start fading, then you paint again. Else hawk might pick and eat up to three a day.

Lol, that won't be necessary, they've bin indoors since Cindy hatched her eggs, see that tire behind Mira (first pic) above. That's where Cindy and the little chicks have bin staying.

Don't want them being trampled upon by the roosters. So for the next weeks ahead that's where they'll be staying.

Although Cindy wants to take them outing, like sight seeing and showing them around the compound, cos I can feel she's getting tired of staying at one place. But I'm not having any of that for now.

Once I see she has left her spot and two or three chick follows, I'll intervene and take her back.

Update:

As of this morning, Cindy has hatched all the eggs, and to think it was her first time "Discipline". In total the eggs she layed and has hatched is 10.

So I have 10 new baby chicks in the family now will drop their pics tomorrow same with Mira.

Not Mira tho, it's Cindy who became a mom today. She hatched five(5) chicks today, and hopefully more are on their way as she's still covering. Maybe by Wednesday we should get more.

Still at their very tender stage as they hatched today, unable to stand properly, looking cute and all.

Anyway that been said my reason for ghosting the thread was due to the role I played on Mira's part, my act of negligence on the grounds that I knew too well Mira wasn't going to hatch her eggs, even though my attention was brought to the matter on several occasions, but u chose to ignore and let my little Mira suffer, some of u might hate me for dis but "Mira sat on the eggs for 2month+" couldn't muster the courage to let her know all hopes were lost.

Oh!!! the phycological trauma I put her through, even after the eggs where dispose off, cos I couldn't do it, someone dispose of it. She sometimes goes back looking for her eggs to cover only to find an empty spot

Took here about a week+ for her to fully recover and get back to her normal chicken life, all due to my act of negligence. Some of u would have sued me if given the chance.

With all dis events and happenings, I couldn't bring myself to update u guys on the progress of Mira and Cindy, thought it wise to avoid the "I told you so" even tho a good number of you told me so.

Decided to take a chill pill, and come back with atleast a good news that way y'all will forgive me quickly .

So guess what? Guess who's a mother now?

She started covering 2day back so count down (21days) has started 19days to go, b4 I do the needful.

NB: now that the case is like this, before you rush out to get a rooster, it will do you more than good to crack the eggs and see if it is double yolked or single yolked since it was raised partially in an intensive system; thus if double yolked, you have to stop feeding them FINISHER which is high in protein and start feeding them growers and plenty of grains to correct the situation, after which you are good to go with introducing a matured rooster to them. About introducing a Rooster I already did although for the past 4days now there's not bin peace, Mira & Cindy keep chasing the two Roosters, don't want to see them at all. I know it's cus they're new to the environment.

Anyways about popping an egg dat wouldn't b necessary, I knew from tym the only thing I've done is change their food, more of rice and millet now.

Mira layed about 7eggs and she has started covering them and acting protective over them.

The chances of her hatching the eggs are very slim, since she didn't cross a male chicken. I'll just watch and see what happens.

Pics didn't really do justice to d eggs. Since it was layed by a native the eggs are really small compared to that of a Layer(poultry) the one u buy for consumption.

Mira is a native fowl, not a layer that it's sole purpose is to lay eggs.

Something I Still Can't Explain Just Happened

Besides Mira and Cindy there are no other male chicken at home atleast not up to the age of mating (My Cockerels).

It's bin almost two weeks since I left home(work related issues)and I haven't seen my girls for that long, I miss them tho . I was going through some topics on NL and came across a thread, the Op of that thread asked how long it would take a dog to forget it's owners face after bin away for so long...

That got me wondering I've been away for almost two weeks now will Mira and Cindy still recognize me, I mean they're not dogs who I strongly believe will still regonize it's owner even after a month, but my girls are Chickens (does that change anything?)

So what do u guys think, will I still b recognized after two weeks or I'll just be a total stranger to Mira and Cindy.

See who joined the family recently (Pics below) just look at dis cuties aren't they adorable. I bought 10 of them, and by the way they're little Cockerel (just so innocent). Well for all those with d said comments, guess what? I just increased the lifetime of Mira and Cindy by 'A Very Very Long Time' (atleast that was the intention).

One more tin, we(I said we cos I would want u guys to b a part of this incase I want to name a new chick) won't be naming any of them so as not to get attached and obviously we won't be able to tell who is who wen they grow up. So no naming, sorry guys

Mira and Cindy are doing just fine and their growth rate is quite amazing. On introducing them to boys that will b much much much later, not anytime soon trust me.

No external bodies can get into the compound as it's well fenced so u nid not worry about Mira and Cindy having any visitors.

I was able to pull it off (so excited) Cindy ate out of my palm today (even tho it was a quick snatch) but atleast that's a step in the right direction, don't u think?

Happy Sunday to you all

So during the weekend I was able to get a shot of Cindy (Finally) just one lucky shot tho.

Lately I've noticed Mira no longer takes food from me, when I call out it's either she ignores or she just stirs at the food in my palm and walks away. Other times she just picks one-two and she's off. Well I guess she doesn't want me treating her like a baby chick anymore (you know how teenagers act at a certain age, always wanting to act cool and all that) am sure Mira doesn't want me falling her hand(feathers) in front of Cindy.

"I'm a big chick now how can my owner still be feeding me like a little chicken and see how Cindy is looking at me"


Well guess I won't b doing dat anymore. She's a big chick now she can fend for her self
