Education / Little Boy Runing Late To School, Stops For Prayer And The Pledge Of Allegiance by Slytee(m): 12:34pm On Dec 31, 2016

A boy stopped on his way in to school to say a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Little Royce Thompson’s mom said she was droped him off a little bit late last week and while he was running in, he heard the loudspeakers playing the other students’ pledge. So, Royce stopped and joined in, then said a spontaneous prayer.

It was unbelievable! Little Royce was asked why he stopped, he said,” i said a prayers, i thanked God for giving me a wonderful day”.

School Officer Kirby Moore was nearby and said she was touched, because other kids were rushing past him to get inside, he stopped to acknowledge that moment.

“I couldn’t believe that he acknowledged that that was a moment of… you need to stop and do the pledge and he did and he just ignored the other kids around him and kept doing it,” Officer Moore said. “It was awesome.”

TV/Movies / Learn From The Movie ‘unbroken’- Story Of Man Who Refuse To Give Up by Slytee(m): 11:57am On Nov 17, 2016

This is a story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete who joined armed forces during the second world war. Not many of you have heard of him. But his story of survival, resilience, and redemption is a story to tell, a story to teach in middle school. I got to know about him last night only when I watched, Unbroken.

Unbroken is a story of Louis Zamperini, who despite all the difficulties, hard times, refuses to give up. He might even be the strongest person on earth.

So what exactly is his story, Louis Zamperini, was a younger kid in his family. Just like any other younger kid, he doubted his abilities. He used to think he is nothing and his life has no purpose. His thinking didn’t change until his big brother Pete motivates him. He motivates him to make it into the track team.

His big brother’s words to him goes thus:

“If you can take it, you can make it. You train and you fight way harder than those other guys. And you win. You can do this, Louis. You just gotta believe you can.”
This was the turning point for Louis, he finally started believing in himself and he train harder and harder from that day. It was like the only thing he needed was that little motivation. Believe me, a little motivation; a little inspiration can do wonders.

He went on becoming the fastest high school runner in American history which eventually led him to the 5000m race for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He finished 8th in the event.

But little did he know about life. Life was hard on him. After that Olympic event, he joined armed forces during the Second World War. Unfortunately, on a search and a rescue mission Zamperini’s plane crashed in the ocean. This is the moment where Life had his grip on him and started to break him. But Louis was strong. He didn’t give up. He fights his way back till he can.

After drifting at sea for 45 days (Yes you heard me right, he survived sea for forty five days), he was captured by Japanese and was taken to a prison camp in Japan where he was tortured. The commander Watanabe was a sadistic and frustrated man and he treated Louis with cruelty since he was Olympian.

The torture included getting the beating of his life every day. There is this scene so brutal, where the commanding officer asks his fellow prisoners to punch him in the face, one by one.

He took the beating but still didn’t give up on life. He had this motto of him, all through the hard times that if he can take it, he can make it. That’s what kept him going through all the dark times.

“If i can take it, i can make it. My brother used to say that. He used to think i could do anything. He use to think that i was better than i am”
Just when I thought what worse can happen, this happens. He is working in coal mines, barely ate anything and it’s freaking hot out there. The commanding officer orders him to pick a heavy plank over his head and if he drops it, he gets a bullet in the head. This was the breathtaking and defining moment of this movie. He looks him into the eye and lifts even higher. This gave hope, strength, and inspiration to other prisoners.

The Japanese office just couldn’t believe what he saw. One thing which annoyed him the most was when Louie looked into his eyes. And there he was lifting wood which weighs more than him and looked straight into his eyes. Even the commanding officer cried that day seeing his strength, his resilience. Lousi was a hardheaded and brave man and was not broken by Watanabe, resisting his torture and inspiring his mates in the camp.

After this finally the war ended and he did make it back to his home. He is a true inspiration for all of us.

Fight back. Stand up for yourself. Life can be really harsh sometimes but you cannot say no to life, you gotta take your stand because nothing is stronger than you, not even a single problem of yours.

Nairaland / General / 50yrs Ago She Did Something No Woman Had Ever Done by Slytee(m): 11:44am On Oct 25, 2016

Fifty years ago, Bobbi Gibb applied to run the Boston Marathon and was told that, “Women are not physiologically fit to run a marathon.” She decided to apply anonymously; she ended up being the first woman to finish it.

In those days, there was no way for women to support themselves economically. Women couldn’t own a house; they couldn’t get a mortgage; they couldn’t get a credit card. If you were a woman and you were lucky enough to go to college, you were expected to get engaged in your senior year and then get married.

“I wanted to be married and have children, She said; but that’s not all. I want to use my mind and my body. Part of what I was doing with running was getting away from all of that, finding a kind of freedom I didn’t have in society. I knew I wasn’t going to change, so the world had to change.”

If you have ever considered running a marathon, you would understand how discouraging this idea can be. First, questions flood your brain: How do I start? What plan should I use? Do I need to change my diet?

Now imagine the answers to your queries are impossible to find. There is no Internet to search for training plans; there is no running store to ask for tips; there are no race nutrition books available. The biggest question isn’t whether you will finish, if you try, will you survive?

This is the scenario Bobbi Gibb faced when she made up her mind in 1964 to run the Boston Marathon. At the time, if a female attempted to cover such long distance, she would likely die in the process. But Gibb harbored an unshakable self-belief and she knew she had to try.

She became the very first woman to cross the Boston Marathon’s finish line. The 2016 Boston Marathon marked the 50th anniversary of her moment.

“Life is all about breaking those mental barriers and leaping across those little invisible fences”

Nairaland / General / Good Samaritan Raises Over $250,000 For 89yrs Old Icecream Seller & Sick Wife by Slytee(m): 9:24pm On Sep 14, 2016

A well-wisher has raised more than $200,000 to aid an elderly man after seeing the 89-year-old street vendor struggling to push his cart of frozen treats.

Joel Cervantes Macias was driving through the Little Village area in Chicago on Thursday when he saw Fidencio Sanchez having a hard time pushing his paleta cart.

Macias, a Mexican restaurant owner said the sight of Sanchez broke his heart, noting he thought the vendor should be enjoying retirement at his age.

He took a photo of Sanchez and posted it to Facebook with the caption: ‘I respect this man to the fullest! #workflow #dyingbreed #mexicano #migente.’

Macias then bought 20 paletas from Sanchez for $50 before driving away. After his photo of Sanchez captured the hearts of hundreds, he decided to start a Gofundme page, with the help of a friend, to help make life a little easier for Sanchez and his wife, Eladia.

He had retired two months ago but returned to work after their only daughter died in July. Sanchez’s wife also had become ill and was unable to sell paletas anymore to help pay bills.

Macias started the Gofundme campaign on Friday with the goal of raising just $3,000.He has now raised over $265,000 in three days.

Macias said on the Gofundme page that he plans to use Facebook Live to film him giving the money to the couple on Monday.

Sanchez said he plans to share the money with his churches back in Mexico and in Chicago and also with his grandchildren, according to Univision Chicago.

As for whether he will continue working, he said it is not likely but that it is possible because he enjoys being out in the fresh air, saying it helps him a lot..

Nairaland / General / A Girl Rejected Me Because I Couldn’t Buy Her A Beer, Today I Own A Brewery by Slytee(m): 12:25pm On Aug 27, 2016

A Uganda-based billionaire, Dr.Martin aliker is one of the many men who were rejected by women when they had nothing. He sent his audience laughing after recounting how rejection from a girl back when he was a university student because he could not afford to buy her beer, was the birth of his dream to one day own a brewery.

Today, he’s one of the richest people in Uganda who owns shares in East African Breweries, was giving a speech during the recent celebrations of Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) turning 70, when he recounted the interesting story.

It was back in the late 1940s when taking beer had just become an in-thing. He approached a beautiful girl in a nightclub, but the lady would only have time for him if he could buy her a bottle of beer.

“I was at Makerere and those days there was only one night club, near Clock Tower. I approached this girl and she actually wanted to dance with me. The condition was that I buy a beer.

Back then a beer was only one shilling, but I couldn’t afford it,” the billionaire said as quoted by Matooke Republic.
Speaking during the celebrations held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Aliker said that that disappointing experience roused a will in him to work his way up and one day own a brewery.

“She rejected me because I couldn’t afford a beer but now I have a brewery. That night was my inspiration to be part of a brewery business.

I vowed that one day I had to be involved in making beer,” the 88-year-old mogul told the amused crowd.
He also owns shares in several other companies including Nation Media Group, National Insurance Corporation, Uganda Clays and Stanbic Bank, and has sat in over 40 boards of companies in his home country.

The elder, also a chancellor of Victoria University, is married to Camille who he met in the US when he was a student, and persuaded her to come to Uganda with him.

Success is not final, struggle is a process…what would make the difference eventually is ‘discipline’. -Who knows where that lady is now? #life

Romance / I Snubbed Him 12yrs Ago In School, Today We Are Happilly With 3 Kids by Slytee(m): 2:48pm On Aug 01, 2016

We met 12 years ago in UNIBEN in Nigeria, I was on my way to choir practice, when he walked up to me and said hello to me, I said “hi” I walked as fast as I could away from him as I was already running late for Choir practice, he kept following me and asked if I could give him a minute, I shouted at him and said “say what you want to say am late for choir practice”.

He was quite polite and told me his name was Richard , what’s your name he asked and I answered ” you asked me to give you a minute right? Your time is up” and I walked away.

I didn’t see him again until about 2 months after, I was going to the library to read and was preparing for my exams, he saw me and followed me to the library, he said I know you are preparing for your exams but please hear me out, he asked me for my mobile number, I lied to him and told him I didn’t have a phone, he asked me when I will be through with my exams, I told him 2 weeks time, then he said I’ll come look for you in the library a day to your last papers, I said alright, and then he left.

The day before my last papers I didn’t go to the library, I decided to study at home in order to avoid him, I went home for holidays after my last paper. About a week later I got a call from him, I was surprised how he got my number and I asked him how he got my number, and he told me he went to my hostel to look for me, he said he described me to any one he could find and finally a classmate of mine gave him my number and he told me her name, I was really surprised she has my number because we weren’t that close, I guess she gave him my number just to spite me, but God had other plans for me.

God used her to bring such an amazing and God fearing man into my life, he kept in touch, in fact he called me everyday but never asked me out for a date or anything. Then about 2 weeks later, we were talking on the phone and he asked if he could come visit me at home. I said no, but I asked if he could come to my church on Sunday, he said yes and he did. After Church we went out on a date and that was when we started a Godly relationship for about 2 years before we got married 10 years ago.

And God has blessed us with 3 amazing kids and it’s been God all the way.

Romance / Woman Who Lost Her Good Husband Due To “ego” Shares Her Touching Story by Slytee(m): 12:40pm On Jul 23, 2016

It is the wife’s role to ensure peace in her home; kill your ‘ego’ once you are married, for your sanity…

This is a true life story of a woman who is lamenting her ordeal after getting divorced by her husband due to her ego and bad advice from people around her.

I am 32 years old. Me and my ex hubby dated for six years, I started dating him whilst I was in grade 12, I was 19 years old. We were best of friends, I waited until he completed college and started work, my family and his family then met, we got married and had a son (7 years old now).

My husband was short tempered at times, but our problems started when I wanted to make him feel he can’t control me. Every time we argue, I would pack my bags, go to my family and explain.

My sisters would phone my husband and ridicule. If he talks I would always dare him that if you wish divorce me – I never wanted divorce, I just had pride and I never wanted to look a lose in his eyes.

One day I pushed him so had that for the first time he beat me and lock me out side, I went to my family, my family took him to police, every time I pretend like I am being abused! But to be honest, I used to abuse my husband emotionally.

He was arrested and detained. I was asked by his family to withdraw the case, I felt that what I was doing is wrong. My husband was never a violent man, he did what he did because I pushed him too much too hard. I withdrew the charge, and we reconciled.

After three months, I packed my bags after a small issue, and he remained alone. After two days I received a call that he is in hospital, [but] my family told me that I shouldn’t go there because it will look like am begging him, and my sisters claimed he is faking the illness even without seeing him.

All this time, people felt sorry for me like I was the one being abused. He spent a week in hospital, after he came out, I just received a divorce summon. I wanted to say no to divorce, but because I felt this pride, I wanted him to change his mind and beg me, I called him and say he will get the divorce, I pretend like am in hell in his house.

When we went to court, I wanted to make him pay, so I told the court that I needed his properties to be shared. To my surprise he openly told the court that whatever he and me acquired together should be given to me, all he wanted was divorce.

We got divorced in 2009 July. Now, this Saturday my husband is getting married again, whilst I am here “wasted”! My family are gossiping about me, I depend on what my ex gives to my son for survival. I know I wasted my marriage. I am here telling all wives to be careful how you get advise. Don’t be deceived by those close to you. Even my young sisters are much more respected than me. Those who encouraged me to divorce my husband are always bad mouthing me now.

There is no benefit in Pride and Ego for a woman in marriage. I learnt my lessons a bit late!

Sports / 10 Business Lesson To Learn From Portugal Victory In Euro 2016 by Slytee(m): 12:52pm On Jul 12, 2016

1) Portugal is not a one-man team.
Lesson: Let people hold an opinion of you. You know what and who you are and what you can do under immense pressure. All you need is an opportunity to show it.

2) Ronaldo made France better.
Lesson: Don’t eliminate your “best” competitor. Your competitor keeps you on your toes. If your competition is weak, good will be your better and better will be your best.

3) Portugal’s attack was blunted, but they did not concede a goal.
Lesson: It is not how much money you make; it is how much is saved. If you are not making money, don’t lose money.

4) 85% of the spectators cheered France.
Lesson: Crowd support is overrated. You are your greatest and best cheerleader.

5) Portugal held the ball in their half and made quick passes in France’s half.
Lesson: Victory/success is planned. A team hardly happens on success.

6) The odds were against Portugal.
Lesson: Don’t pay attention to the media and bookmakers. Give yourself a chance.

7) Despite his injury, Ronaldo “played” on the sidelines.
Lesson: Sometimes, inconvenience is secondary consideration. When you smell blood, do the overkill – with just one painful thrust.

cool France was arguably better than Portugal on the night.
Lesson: You are better than you think. You don’t have to be an Einstein to succeed. Determination could be everything.

9) Portugal made a celebration T-shirt before the game started.
Lesson: Believe success is possible. Plan your celebration dance.

10) Portugal did not play with Ronaldo.
Lesson: You don’t always need a star to be successful. Give your team members responsibility.

Follow ur dreams…..

Career / This Unemployed Man Missed His Job Interview To Save A Baby From Incoming Train by Slytee(m): 1:22pm On Jul 07, 2016

This might sound like a hollywood script, but this unemployed Brooklyn man has actually added “Hero” to his name.

The unemployed Brooklyn man, Delroy Simmonds was on his way to a job interview when he intervened by saving the life of a 9-month-old boy who was blown into the path of an oncoming subway train by a gust of high wind.

Simmonds jumped onto the elevated tracks and hoisted the bleeding child, still strapped in his stroller, to the safety of the platform as the train bore down upon them.

The father of two then shrugged off his courageous, selfless act.

Simmonds told the New York Daily News:

“Everybody is making me out to be some sort of superhero… I’m just a normal person. Anybody in that situation should have done what I did.”
In a struggling economy the hero tag isn’t important to Simmonds, as he says he wasn’t looking for praise but what he really wants is a regular paycheck.

“I’ve been looking for a job for a year and change,” Simmonds said. “I’m looking for something to support my family.”
The Brooklyn native was on his way to apply for a maintenance position at a warehouse when the unthinkable happened at the Van Siclen Ave. station in Cypress Hills at 12:45 p.m.

As Simmonds recalled:

“A strong gust of wind blew. It had to be 30, 40 miles an hour…There was a woman with four kids. One was in a stroller. The wind blew the baby onto the tracks.”

He hoisted the stroller to the platform as the train came in and pulled himself up just as the train jerked to a stop halfway into the station, witnesses said.

Khalima Ansari, 21, who was waiting for the same train, was stunned by Simmonds’ heroics, saying, “The baby had a big gash on his forehead. You could see his skull.”

The child was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and treated for cuts to his face and head.

“It was the fatherly instinct. I have two daughters of my own — 8 and 5. I was being a father. I would have done it for any baby,” Simmonds said.
Luckily, his act was enough to wrangle another interview. In response to all the public recognition, Simmonds kept his eye on the prize: “What I really need now is a job,” said. Hopefully he gets the job!

Science/Technology / Life Experiences – Using A Smartphone In The Dark Can Make You Blind by Slytee(m): 1:51pm On Jun 23, 2016

This is a warning to those who sleep with their devices next to them, researchers have found two women who were affected by transient smartphone “blindness” — a condition where they went blind in one eye after gazing at smartphones in the dark. That seemingly harmless habit of yours of using your smartphone before bedtime can give you vision problems.

The first experience, A 22-year-old woman in England had these habit of gazing at her smartphone before falling asleep. She would lie on her left side and look at the screen primarily with her right eye. Her left eye was often covered by the pillow.

One day, she thought she was going blind in one eye. She could always see fine out of her left eye. But on some nights, the right eye failed her. All she could see out of it were vague shapes in the room. At first, it happened about two or three times a week. Then it started happening every night.

When she went to the doctor, her vision appeared normal. So did brain scans. But it was a disturbing trend.

The other Experience involved a 40-year-old woman, she usually wake up before sunrise and checked the news on her smartphone before sitting up. It had been going on for about a year, ever since she had injured her cornea. Around the same time, she bought a smartphone.

“They were looking at their smartphones and they just happened to have one eye covered because they were lying in bed,” Omar Mahroo, ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and an author reported in a paper published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The retina is pretty amazing because it can adapt to lots of different light levels, probably better than any camera. So in both cases, nothing bad was going on, just that one retina was adapted to light and the other to dark.

To get to the root of the problem, the researchers asked the two patients to view the smartphone with just the left eye and then just the right eye on separate occasions.

They realised that the eye going temporarily “blind” was always the one that was being used to look at the bright screen.

To confirm this further, Mahroo went in a dark room and with one eye covered, looked at a smartphone for 20 minutes before turning off the screen.

“It did actually feel quite strange,” he said. “It would be very alarming if you didn’t know what was going on.”

After flashes of dim light, the retina that had been exposed to the screen took longer to adjust to new light settings.

According to Mahroo, several other patients have said they experienced concerning vision loss because of smartphone use.

Nairaland / General / Inspiring Story About Rose – 87years Old Lady I Meet At School by Slytee(m): 2:21pm On Jun 03, 2016

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze. “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.

She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.”

“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.”

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began:

“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success.”

“You have to laugh and find humor every day.”

“You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it!”

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.”

“Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.” She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

In loving memory of Rose:
Remember, Growing older is mandatory, growing up is optional. We make a living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give. God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it!
