Politics / Murisam Campaign Council Denounces Kogi Government’s Supreme Court Case Judgemen by Smilesnaija: 9:24pm On Aug 07
Press Statement!
Wednesday August 7th, 2024

MURI/SAM CAMPAIGN COUNCIL DENOUNCES KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT'S UNTIMELY CELEBRATION OF GUBERNATORIAL CASE, URGES THOROUGH JUDICIAL REVIEW.

The Murtala Yakubu Ajaka Campaign Council of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is deeply concerned about recent events regarding the gubernatorial case between Ahmed Usman Ododo, the incumbent governor of Kogi State, and our candidate, Murtala Yakubu Ajaka.

It has come to our attention that senior appointees of the Kogi State Government and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took to social media on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, to celebrate a purported victory in the case. This celebration, which included the dissemination of placards and graphics congratulating Ahmed Usman Ododo of the APC, took place even though the Supreme Court has yet to officially commence its sitting on the matter.

Similar occurrences have been observed prior to the tribunal judgment and the Court of Appeal proceedings, where the judgments were leaked to the public and reported by mainstream media before the court even resumed sitting on the day of judgment. For example, Sahara Reporters news platform published a copy of the judgment several hours before the court commenced sitting.

As a campaign council and an interested party in this case, we have every right to call out these irregularities. We shall not tolerate any further attempts to influence the judiciary through the misuse of state treasury funds.

We are calling on the Supreme Court judges to uphold justice and maintain public confidence in the judiciary's ability to deliver impartial and well-reasoned judgments. As the process is about to begin, we categorically reject the current panel setup and urge the relevant legal authorities, particularly the National Judicial Council, to closely monitor and ensure a thorough process in selecting judges for the Kogi State case.

Additionally, we call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the Kogi State Government, as there have been allegations of significant cash withdrawals from the state's coffers to finance their court case against the SDP.

While we continue to monitor these events and expose any wrongdoing, we reiterate our confidence in the Supreme Court. We urge the judiciary to uphold its rules of engagement and ensure impartial adjudication of cases. The Supreme Court must protect the good people of Kogi State from deliberate treasury looters.

Signed;
Isaiah Ijele Davies,
Spokesperson, MURI/Sam Campaign Council.

Politics / CSO Urges Supreme Court To Be Fair On Kogi Guber Case by Smilesnaija: 10:33am On Aug 07
*Kogi Guber: CSO Urges Supreme Court to be fair*

A Civil Society group, Electoral Integrity and Good Governance Initiative, has appealed to the supreme Court Judges handling the Kogi state Governorship election appeal before it to look into the case properly in a bid to correct what they described as "the mistake of the lower courts."

In a statement made available to journalist, Prince Kolawole Abiodun, Spokesperson of the group, says the inconsistencies witnessed in the Kogi State Governorship case, comparing to that of Bayelsa State calls for a serious concern.

According to him, in the Kogi state SDP Versus APC case, the election petition tribunal, despite compelling BVAS evidences displayed openly on order of the court, exposing clear discrepancies between the number of accredited voters and the final results in all the polling units in contention, the tribunal went ahead to dismissed it on the grounds of not proving beyond reasonable doubt.

He notes that in the Bayelsa APC Vs PDP case, the tribunal and the Appeal Court affirmed the judgement in favor of the PDP, on the basis of missing BVAS evidence the APC Gubernatorial candidate did not produce to prove over-voting.

The statement adds that the Bayelsa judgement appears to set a precedent for the importance of BVAS in the electoral process as it was introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a means to ensure transparency and accountability in the voting process.

The group express confidence in the Supreme Court, to thoroughly stand by justice, and maintain public confidence in its ability to deliver impartial and well-reasoned judgement.

Politics / Kogi Commissioner Criticizes Ribadu’s Security Management, Calls For Resignation by Smilesnaija: 9:11pm On Aug 06
Kogi Commissioner Criticizes Ribadu’s Security Management, Calls for Resignation

Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, has strongly criticized the performance of National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu. In an interactive session with journalists at the state headquarters in Lokoja, the commissioner demanded Ribadu’s immediate resignation or a significant improvement in security conditions across the country.

The commissioner expressed his opinion on the state of security in Nigeria, stating that the nation is plagued by an incompetent NSA who has neglected the country’s affairs since assuming office. The deteriorating security situation lacks effective measures to curb it.

Ribadu, seemingly confused, has failed to address the pressing security challenges during his tenure. The commissioner called for his immediate removal.

Furthermore, the commissioner criticized Ribadu’s approach to security issues, likening it to a snail’s slow pace that does not match the urgency of security demands.

The commissioner urged the president to dismiss Ribadu in the interest of the nation. According to him, the call for Ribadu’s removal is long overdue, and turning a blind eye would lead to disastrous consequences. Urgent reforms are needed to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

Highlighting several kidnapping cases within Kogi State, the commissioner emphasized that repeated appeals to Ribadu had fallen on deaf ears. Citizens can no longer sleep soundly, and travelers face risks of kidnapping and armed robbery.

In conclusion, the commissioner firmly believes that Ribadu’s dismissal will mark the beginning of improved safety and an end to insecurity in Nigeria.
