Seeing how much traction this thread has gotten already,let me state somethings that I hope can educate a couple of us.

Firstly, good dogs don't cheap in anyway except you're buying from someone who doesn't care about money or someone doing you a favour. Let me paint a picture that would make this point clearer. How can I buy a dog from Europe for at least €2500 (plus shipping) and breed that dog with say a friend's dog that most likely spent that much or more ( this is just to cut cost by the way, else you would buy for double that price at least). Then after all the uncertainties and care and feeding, this dog litters. Does it make sense to sell that dog for 50k or even 80k? I'll let you answer that.

Secondly, a pure bred dog is not one that looks like a pure breed, or one that the sire and dam look like pure breeds. A pure bred dog is one whose parents' record are intact to at least 5 generations before them on both sides and each of the dogs present on the generation tree meet up with the international breeding standards. Take note I'm not saying without this a dog isn't pure, I'm just saying that without this records, there is no other way to be absolutely sure that any dog in question is pure except you want to perform DNA test. In that case feel free to indulge yourself.

Lastly, anybody that comes on nairaland to say he's selling "pure breeds" without providing the pedigree papers or a link to a database site to show how the dog was bred( that is from a reputable breeder by the way), do business with that person at your own risk.

Personally, if ratings are anything to go by, i think the royal canin is nowhere as good as diamond naturals. I have tried the diamond naturals and it works just fine for me, plus its readily available and much more affordable at N17,000 for the 23kg bag as against the N20,000 for the 18kg royal canin bag. My two cents

I know how frustrating that can be because i was in your shoes not long ago. what simply worked for my pups was steaming chicken and adding it to whatever i would ideally give to them and it worked like a charm. You dont need to go buy chicken that you would otherwise eat, you can get from people that deal on it depending on your location or you can get beef scraps from your local slaughter, works just fine aswell.

its not mange, two very different things

1. Restrain your pet if necessary. Maggot infested areas of skin can be very painful, and a pet may bite as a reflex.

2. Use blunt tip scissors or electric clippers and clip the affected areas to remove soiled and matted hair. Fur traps bacteria and keeps reinfecting the wound.

3. Remove all maggots with blunt-nosed tweezers, a gauze pad, or tissue. Wear a pair of disposable medical gloves to avoid touching the worms.

4. Wash infected areas with Betadine solution and dry the dog. If you are using water to flush the wound, flush the area for at least 15 minutes. As the maggots escape the wound to avoid drowning, you are then able to easily pick them off. Water will rinse away any remaining fly eggs that haven't hatched.

5. Then spray or shampoo the dog using a non-alcohol based product that contains pyrethrins and check closely for remaining maggots.

6. Topical antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin can be used to assist in fighting infection. Be sure this ointment is out of "licking range" to avoid the oral consumption of the medicine.

Dogs with infected wounds should be treated with oral antibiotics. If the dog is debilitated, her health and nutrition must be improved to bring about a cure.

Cleaning maggots out of a wound is only the first step, and often, the tissue damage is severe. Healing may take a long time, and wound care is important to ensure that more infection doesn't develop.

What a thread. Blasiangurl85, I have to say well done. Your dog is so lucky to have you. And to lordregalia, thank you so much for your insight, it has helped a lot. I'm getting a one year old female gsd and hopefully, the transition to having me as her owner would be seamless but just in case it isn't, I'm glad to have someone like you who can offer helpful tips. And finally to bobbysax, you have done well. Blasiangurl85, thank you for showing people how a dog/human relationship can be so amazing.

The demand for the straight back(working line) gsds is not much so people don't bother spending that much money to import them only to play second fiddle to slant back (show line) gsd owners. And there is also this misconception that the working line gsds are not pure which is very wrong.

Wonderful thread. I live in port harcourt and currently own a gsd n a rott puppy...getting an adult gsd in two months time though...I am fully in support of the idea of a kennel club as that will assist a lot of people in so many ways

Gsds are amazing dogs...looks amazing,very intelligent,can be trained in almost any possible way. However in nigeria here, the breed has been seriously bastardized. You see people calling almost anything a gsd and it's just sad. Wonderful dog to own though... Just got myself a show line (slant back as it's fondly called) puppy,loving the experience.
