Daily Post visited the University on Monday and observed that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had abandoned classes while students were seen roaming the streets in the University. Sources hinted our correspondent that at the meeting of the Union’s congress held on Thursday, about 500 people who attended the congress voted in support of a total strike and 22 voted for two weeks warning strike, while nine against no strike. However, a Strike Bulletin No.1 signed and issued by Ogunyemi, ASUU said the strike action was to be total, comprehensive and indefinite action whereby no form of academic activities including teaching, attendance of any meeting, conduct and supervision of any examination at any level, supervision of project or thesis at any level should take place at any of the nation’s universities. The union recalled that it had to embark on a six month strike between July and December 2013 and the strike was suspended when government signed an MoU with the union. “Of all the items contained in the MoU, only N200bn out of a total of N1.3tr of the Public Universities Revitalisation (Needs Assessment) fund was released. “The union also embarked on a one week warning strike in November 2016 to press for the implementation of 2013 MoU. However government did not implement the understanding reach between the union and Federal Government base on the intervention by the leadership of Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “The National Executive Council, NEC, of ASUU then met at the University of Abuja on August 12 2017 to consider the result of a referendum from all branches in a bid to ascertain ways of convincing government to implement outstanding aspects of the 2009 and the MoU of 2013”. ASUU further listed the outstanding issues with the Federal Government to include: payment of fractions/non-payment of salaries; non-payment of earned academic allowances, non-release of operational license of NUPEMCO; non implementation of the provisions of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries, removal of universities staff schools from funding by government and funds for the revitalization of public universities. They also thought it best to record their escapade with the 18-year-old lady which they intended to use after as a tool to blackmail her if eventually she decided to go to either the college authorities or the law enforcement agencies. Solomon Timilehin is the one dating the victim and the others ate deciding to have a “taste after he opened the gate for them.” Other suspected rapists include Olagbaju Tobi, Adetuyi Olakunle, Adeyemi Adebisi and Eric Nwage. Infact an unconfirmed source said that the suspects used the video recording as a bargaining tool to have sex with the victim twice before she opened up. Police reports had it that after they raped her they abandoned her to go with a threat that they will use charms on her if she ever reveals the incident to anyone. Vanguard gathered that the boyfriend who had been having a misunderstanding with the victim for dumping him for another student decided to teach her the lesson of her life. Findings showed that the two lovers have been dating for over six months and the girl had not yielded to his sexual advances. Timilehin was said to have been infuriated when he saw another lover boy’s name registered on the victim’s telephone and reported to his friends who promised to help him out of his predicament by teaching the “cheat” the lesson of her life. The friends later agreed that the treatment the victim deserved was for the five of them to mess her up by taking turns to rape her. One of them, according to a police detective, suggested that he would pretend to be a peacemaker wanting to settle the misunderstanding between the two estranged lovers by inviting her to a neutral venue outside the campus. The victim who had no premonition of their devilish plan blindly walked into it and they took turns to rape her at Road17, Funbi Fagun Housing Estate, Ondo town. Vanguard gathered that it was the supposed peacemaker and the estranged boyfriend that first showed up at the venue while the other three who were lurking around later joined in the show of shame. A police detective confided in Vanguard that the suspects while raping the victim threatened to stab her to death with a knife if she raised the alarm to attract the neighbours’ attention. The five friends successfully had their turns and chased the victim out of the room with a warning that it would be in her interest to keep her mouth shut or she would live to regret it if she reported to the school authorities or police. Speaking in Hausa, the emotion-laden man said he has not been able to get back on his feet since the attack, which destroyed his shop and goods worth millions of naira. “I was doing fine with my family in Maiduguri until January 2015 when the Boko Haram members attacked the Monday Market and killed several people. “I was in Kano that day to buy goods when I got a call from my house that my wife, Zaina and two sons have been killed by bomb blast. There was panic today at the mortuary of Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, when the hand of the corpse of a man being prepared for burial suddenly grabbed his living brother’s hand. The incident happened as the deceased, identified as Choji Zeng, was being dressed up by his brother, in preparation for burial. Family members, who had participated in the washing of the corpse, ran out in panic as they saw the dead Choji Zeng, holding tight to his younger brother Mr. Gyang Zeng. The pandemonium attracted mortuary attendants, who came in to separate the two brothers. The two brothers had lived together at Ungwan Juma’a Abattoir in Jos metropolis. Zeng, 35 years old, died after a brief illness, relations said. He was said to have suffered from a liver disease. Gyang Zeng confirmed the unusual incident to the News Agency of Nigeria. He said after bathing his brother, he was dressing him with white cloth, when his corpse grabbed his hands. He said he had to call the mortuary attendant for help. The mortuary attendant forced the dead hands off him. Relations and neighbours who witnessed the incident, also confirmed it to The News Agency of Nigeria. Gyang also revealed to NAN that when the deceased held his hands, he asked him; “Choji why did you hold my hand, you want me to join you or what”. One of the mortuary attendants said that it was not the first time such a thing will happen in the mortuary. Mr. Benjamin Oche, a neighbour of the two brothers who also witnessed the incident told us that before the demise of the deceased, both brothers had a misunderstanding. He said both of them had quarrelled over the land they inherited from their parents. But no foul play was being suspected in Choji Zeng’s death. Mr. Abba Kyari, President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial Chief of Staff, is exploiting the President’s ill-health, sources have told SaharaReporters. Mr. Kyari, disclosed sources, has prevented the suspension of Mr. Jalal Arabi, Permanent Secretary of the State House from taking effect, as ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari. Sources told a reporter that Mr. Arabi has been suspended by the President, but the suspension was stopped from taking effect by Mr. Kyari, to whom the Permanent Secretary is very close. The President was said to have suspended Mr. Arabi over a series of indiscretions, which included his refusal to pay State House staff for up to six months. He was said to have since paid much of the arrears, leaving only two months outstanding. Mr. Arabi is said to owe his position to the Chief of Staff. Sources told a correspondent that Mr. Arabi failed the examination into the Permanent Secretary cadre, but Mr. Kyari facilitated his appointment without an interview. His failure to pay State House workforce on time was said to have sparked widespread misgivings among the staff, many of whom make the finances seriously stretched. Mr. Arabi is said to be a brother-in-law to Mr. Adamu Muazu, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who owned the building in which $45million was recently discovered in Ikoyi, Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Mr. Kyari, said sources, has ensured a slash in the budget of the President’s office, a development that the staff are not happy about. “Everybody in the Villa is now suffering. They fuel their cars from their pockets and of course travel as much as six times without estacode,” said a source. The lean situation, added the source, has forced many of the staff to start seeking transfer from the Villa. The staff explained that the budget slash was done to clip the wings of the President’s wife, Aisha, whose office has no budget and is solely reliant on the President’s. Villa sources told a reporter that Mr. Kyari, his blue-eyed boy, Mr. Arabi, and other members of the kitchen cabinet are taking full advantage of the President’s failing health. They are said to be the ones behind the plot not to take him abroad for further treatment. The scheme is to ensure that Vice President does not assume full presidential powers. Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, says Kano State Government has the capacity to generate a monthly revenue of N12 billion if each of its estimated 12 million people is charged a flat monthly rate of N1,000. Sanusi, made the assertion during the launch of the state Presumptive Taxation for commercial vehicle operators at the Government House in Kano on Sunday. He explained that “collecting a small amount from many people will definitely boost the coffers of the government.” Sanusi noted that if Kano can generate as much as N12 billion monthly, it would not rely on funds from the Federation Account. “Paying taxes is securing our pride. We are disparaged because we rely on oil money so we must explore alternative ways to sustain our state,” he added. Sanusi promised that his council would support the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje administration in its revenue generation drive. He advised the state government to ensure that owners of big landed property like residential structures at Nassarawa GRA in the state capital, pay ground rent properly to enable the government provide services for the poor. Speaking, Ganduje, explained that the presumptive tax was for commercial vehicles-buses, trucks, mini trucks, assorted tankers, luxury buses, tippers, trailers, taxis and tricycles. “The taxes we are going to collect will help us ensure that the roads you travel are free from potholes and will enable us build more roads, so that you can have the enabling environment to do business with ease,” he said. Ganduje added that monies collected would be used to provide more public utilities such as schools, health facilities, roads and to fund many pro poor programmes. “We are paying salaries but that is not enough. Airing his opinion on the content of the book, Goodluck Jonathan said “I have just read Segun Adeniyi’s new book, ‘Against the Run of Play’ which has so far enjoyed tremendous reviews in the media. “My take on it is that the book as presented contains many distorted claims on the 2015 Presidential election by many of the respondents. “There will obviously be more books like that on this subject by concerned Nigerians. However, I believe that at the right time, the main characters in the elections including myself will come out with a true account of what transpired either in major interviews or books” The author had revealed that the idea for the book germinated when he decided to research into why it is difficult for incumbent presidents to lose elections in Africa. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed his family is being harassed by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. He made his feelings known in a book, “Against The Run of Play”, written by the Chairman of ThisDay Editorial Board, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi. Jonathan also believes Buhari’s anti-corruption war could be fought using a different style. He said: “I feel sad about the way my family is being hounded.” “Society is like a building. You build it one block at a time. If every president decides to go in to dismantle what his predecessor did, society will never make progress. I expected President Buhari to correct whatever mistakes I may have made and then carry on from there. “But a situation in which people go into exile for political reasons is not good for us.” “His style of fighting corruption is different from mine and since most Nigerians apparently prefer his style, it is okay. The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday ordered the temporary seizure of a 12-storey building belonging to the senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Peter Nwaoboshi, over an alleged contract scam of N1.5bn. The court ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to seize the house located at 27, Marine Road, Apapa from Nwaoboshi, a Peoples Democratic Party member. The order was made by Justice Abdulaziz Anka after entertaining an ex Party application brought before him on Monday by the anti-graft agency. Joined with Nwaoboshi in the application were his two companies — Golden Touch Construction Project Limited, and Bilderberg Enterprises Limited. According to Punch, the EFCC told the judge that Nwaoboshi, through his company, Bilderberg Enterprises Limited, got a N1.580bn contract to supply some construction equipment to the Delta State Direct Labour Agency sometime in 2010. The anti-graft agency, however, claimed that Nwaoboshi’s company supplied second-hand equipment to the agency while he actually collected money to supply new equipment, thereby short-changing the agency. The EFCC claimed that Nwaoboshi later used the proceeds of the alleged scam to bid for and purchase the 12-storeyed building, formerly known as Guinea House, for the sum of N805m in the name of his company, Golden Touch Construction Project Limited. Arguing the ex parte application on Monday, the EFCC’s lawyer, George Chia-Yakua, said it was in the interest of justice to order the temporary seizure of the building pending the outcome of investigation and criminal trial of Nwaoboshi and his companies. He said the seizure order being sought was compliant with Section 44(2)(k) of the constitution and sections 28 and 29 of the EFCC (Establishment) Act 2004. After listening to the lawyer, the judge ordered the temporary forfeiture of Nwaoboshi’s building. The quest for Biafra is seriously taking new dimensions, different strategies and steps as the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) who are determined to restore Biafra at all cost, are seriously evangelizing, educating and sensitizing Biafrans all over Biafra land. On the journey to further spread the gospel of the restoration of Biafra and sensitize the people, the formidable Indigenous people of Biafra in Igweocha, on the 23rd day of April 2017, inaugurated another IPOB family zone known as ‘Obigbo Zone 7’ in Obigbo LGA. The colourful inauguration which attracted the presence of neighbors and passersby, kicked off at exactly 2pm in a church where the zone first prayed for the restoration of Biafra and the release of the amiable leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. During the inauguration; the state visiting team leader Hon. Prince Sunday and the Igweocha South East Senatorial leader, Hon. Chigozie emphasized on the need why the zone and other IPOB families should double their efforts by ensuring they further evangelise for the restoration of Biafra and sensitize Biafrans, most especially those who live in the rural areas. The National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) has urged the Rivers Government to follow due process in implementing its amnesty programme for repentant cultists and criminals in Ogoni. NYCOP’s President, Dr. Young Nkpah, made the call in an interview, in Port Harcourt, on Monday. Nkpah, who was reacting to the amnesty offer by the state government, said that the government neglected recognised Ogoni institutions in the exercise. According to him, the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, KaGOTE and NYCOP were never consulted by the representatives of government. He said that it was crucial for the government to liaise with relevant traditional institutions for the amnesty programme to succeed. It would be recalled that following the resurgence of violence in Ogoni, the state government recently approved the granting of amnesty to repentant criminal gangs and cultists. The state government had refused to offer state pardon to repentant cultists in Ogoni due to alleged failure to submit their weapons. Mr. Ken Chindah, head of the state government’s amnesty committee, had said that the weapons submitted were not commensurate with the level of violence in the area. However, Nkpah said that the process would have been successful if the state government had worked with the people and recognised institutions in Ogoni. “Now they are saying that arms submitted were not enough and were not proportionate to the level of violence in Ogoni. “I think that better results would have been achieved if the people were involved, at least, Ogoniland is owned by people,’’ he said. While speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Friday, a Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed, reportedly claimed that some cabals in Aso Rock have hijacked power from President Muhammadu Buari. The elder statesman asked Buhari to bury the thought of going for a second term because Nigerians were already tired of his failed leadership style and would not re-elect him, adding that it was unfortunate for Buhari to allow his government to be hijacked by a cabal working against the overall interest of Nigeria and its people. He said, “The cabal under Buhari has virtually taken over the affairs of the country from him and he cannot counterbalance them, a situation that is very dangerous for the Nigerian people and their future. “As it has emerged, Buhari cannot take firm decisions against the cabal running his government and working for their selfish interest. In the end, the President is always trying to pacify the cabal to the detriment of Nigeria and it is very sad. “This country therefore needs a competent leader bereft of religious, tribal and health challenges to manage its affairs,” he said. Perry Brimah, a popular columnists and convener of ENDS (Every Nigerian Do Something), has raised alarm that President Muhammadu Buhari is dying in office. Brimah in a statement on Friday said Nigeria was being very compassionless to its president and called on the masses to rise against “cabal” locking up Buhari. According to him, “There can be no denying how chronically ill president Muhammadu Buhari looks when he seldom does appear in public. The last time was last week Friday when Kaduna state governor Nasir el-Rufai came visiting. “The videos of Buhari walking for Friday prayers bring tears to eyes. His asthenic figure now no more than skin-and-bones as he sat down for the Jummah service was heart-wrenching. “How can a people be so cold they expose a grandfather to this type of extreme stress and deprive him from his needed rest and medical expert attention by tasking him to lead the world’s most complex nation? “Have we as a people lost our humanity that we continue to task Buhari like this and not campaign for him to be relieved of our burden and rest towards recovery? “It is insane to continue to deprive him and the nation by locking him up and burdening him with a challenge too heavy for even a strong young man to bear talk-less an old man who just returned from a 49-day leave in which he received blood transfusions and unknown cocktails of serious medications. “For those of us in the medical profession, we recognize the president’s loss of hair on his head and facial hair as well as his reported blood transfusions as possible evidence of cancer chemotherapy. “God forbid, however if this is the condition the president is being managed for that the cabal is hiding from the people, the wickedness of the selfish cabal that forces him to remain locked up, “dying” in Aso Rock instead of receiving best therapy, should be vehemently opposed by us masses. “Whoever is found guilty of hiding any serious diagnosis the president may have and bundling him back to deteriorate in Aso Rock under pressure of Nigeria’s humongous burden should be dealt with according to the full extent of the law. Ugochukwu Ehiogu, Nigerian-born ex-England international defender, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest on Thursday. Ehiogu suffered the cardiac arrest at the training ground of Tottenham Hotspur, where he was managing the U-23 team. His death was announced by his employers on Friday morning. Born of Nigerian parents in Homerton, England, on November 3, 1972, Ehiogu opted to play for the English national team despite spirited attempts by Nigeria to make him switch loyalty. Ehiogu played for Aston Villa between 1991 and 2000, making over 200 appearances. In 2000, he joined Middlesbrough where he spent seven years. He won three League Cups — with Villa in 1994 and 1996, and Middlesbrough in 2004 when beat Jay Jay Okocha’s Bolton in the final. He also played for West Brom, Leeds, Rangers and Sheffield United, before retiring in 2009 after a 20-year professional career. After retiring, he founded his own record label called “Dirty Hit”. Boko Haram terrorists killed eight soldiers, wounded 11 others in two separate attacks in three days according to reliable military sources, THE KALABARIS reports. An army battalion was also sacked by the extremists in which the army formations involved in the incidents also lost several arms and ammunition, and called for urgent restocking of their armouries. The first incident, involving troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Sabon Gari, Borno State, occurred at about 6 p.m. on Monday, April 17 when over 200 Boko Haram terrorists on motorcycles suddenly descended on the base. The terrorists, according to those familiar with the incidents, had five gun trucks on which twin barrel artillery guns were mounted. The Nigerian troops fought back gallantly, but were dislodged from their location after about an hour of fierce battle. Five soldiers were killed in action while nine others were seriously injured. Four other soldiers are yet to be found as at the time of this report Army authorities did not immediately comment about the development. It was gathered that hours after the unit retreated from its Sabon Gari base, the surviving troops, along with reinforcements from 25 Brigade, returned to the location in several armoured cars and buses. The counterattack was largely successful, but the army is currently lamenting the loss of their equipment, arms and ammunition in the incident.
