“The FirstBank Contactless Naira Master Card enables quick pin-less purchases and is a fast secure way for customers to shop locally and globally.

“The contactless card can be used for making payments in the London transport network such as buses, tubes, trams, Dock and Light Railway (DLR) and the London Overground as well as in Grocery shops, supermarkets and Gas stations within London metropolis.

“The card is designed to enhance a cashless lifestyle by promoting increased card usage for lower value transactions. Payments are made by tapping the card on the POS machine with contactless functions for low value transactions; the card can also be used in a regular POS as a normal MasterCard,” it explained.

The daily limits for pin-less transactions are N3,000 for the contactless naira Mastercard and N10,000.00 for the contactless Platinum Debit MasterCard.

Furthermore, it revealed that the FirstBank Verve debit card is Chip & PIN secured for greater protection of customers’ funds and provides extra protection for web-based transactions with “Safetoken.”

“It is accepted wherever the Interswitch or Verve logo is displayed and can also be used to perform transactions via the Quickteller services menu on FirstBank ATMs. This Card is issued in 15 minutes at FirstBank branches, saves time and is very easy to obtain.

“With the FirstBank Expressions on Card, Customers now have the freedom to design the look and feel of their cards with their most cherished memories and spend with a card that is as unique as them,” it added.

Education / Re: Abiapoly Reopens, As Union Call Off Strike by solomiles(m): 7:50am On May 15, 2018
AbiaOnline:

The Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has reopened as members of the Non academic staff union (NASU) in the state owned institution, suspended their four weeks old industrial action after a congress of the union held in the school premises.

Speaking to newsmen after the union’s congress, Chairman of the Union, Mr. Kalu Nwankwo, confirmed the decision of congress to suspend the industrial action.

His words: “We decided to suspend the industrial action to allow management implement the agreement we reached with them”.

Also speaking, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, thanked the workers for their decision to return to work.

According to him, “We appreciate the decision of the workers to put the students and the state first. As a government, we will ensure that the agreement reached between the union and the management of the institution is fully respected and implemented”

Continuing, Chief Okiyi stated that the government is currently reviewing the plan presented by the management of the institution to ensure sustainable payment of wages and seamless operation of the Polytechnic and called for patience and support by workers.

“The major challenge remains that the school’s current monthly wage bill of about N170m cannot be sustained by the internally generated revenue profile of the institution, hence, the workers and management need to work together to evolve a sustainable solution that will ensure that the institution truly becomes autonomous as envisaged by the law setting it up.

“Abiapoly receives and autonomously use school fees, grants and other revenues to run its operations. We expect the management and workers to rejig their operations to ensure that what they make can, at least, conveniently pay workers while Government supports with subventions”

Mr Okiyi warned those he described as opposition political actors who he accused of using some workers in the institution to perpetuate the strike and all kinds of sabotage for political benefits to stop meddling in the affairs of the institution and called on workers to resist politically motivated strikes while fighting for their rights.

“We have information on the activities of some political actors in the state who are using some labor leaders to frustrate the school management’s effort at ensuring an amicable and early solution to the industrial crises. Those involved should cease and desist immediately. It is unheard of that workers will embark on strike and then lock up the premises of their employer and take the keys home. Those workers who are willing to return to work should not be molested or stigmatized in any form by those sponsored and funded by politicians to cripple the institution.”

The Commissioner who met with some workers and union leaders that resumed work today, expressed optimism that other unions in the school who are yet to hold congresses will do so in the coming days to ensure full resumption of academic activities.
Politics / Adeosun To World Bank: We Don’t Need You To Monitor Our Debt by solomiles(m): 12:21pm On Apr 20, 2018
Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, says Nigeria does not need the World Bank to monitor its debt.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the ongoing Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group in Washington D.C, Adeosun said Nigeria has the Debt Management Office (DMO), various committees and 185 million citizens as monitors.

She was reacting to the World Bank’s comments on helping countries monitor their debt levels.

“We don’t need the World Bank if they want to come and help us, great but we don’t need them,” she said.

The minister added that current administration has no apologies for obtaining loans to shorten the recession that ended last year.

In 2016, Nigeria’s economy slipped into its worst recession in 29 years and the government deployed various debt instruments like Eurobonds, Savings bond and Sukuk to raise funds.

“There were two options; one was cut back, lay people off and wait for oil prices to recover or be more aggressive, expand your budget, take on more debts and invest in infrastructure in hope that you will get growth going to develop more revenue,” she said.

“We’ve expanded our budget, we pumped money into the economy, we made sure recession was not prolonged. We are now back into growth, we need to accelerate that growth and focus on revenue mobilization which in turn will reduce our debt pressures.

“If we were still in recession, we’d have far bigger problems. I think what people haven’t realised is how much work had to be done to make sure that that recession was as short as possible because that would have caused real pain for the people. We shortened it, we had to borrow to do so and we make no apologies for that.”
