Politics / It Is Not True That Okonjo-iweala, Others Wanted 2015 Election Result Cancelled by sommy25(m): 9:47am On Nov 22, 2018
Re: Jonathan: I was pressed to reject 2015 election result’

Our attention has been drawn to a story in the Nation newspaper titled ‘Jonathan: I was pressed to reject 2015 election result’ which erroneously claimed that some identified former aides and ministers of ex-President Jonathan advised him “not to accept defeat.”

The story which was said to have been written from President Jonathan’s new book ‘My Transition Hours’ mentioned the then Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister Mohammed Bello Adoke; Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka, as those whose advice was rebuffed by Jonathan.

This is obviously a gross misrepresentation of what was stated in the book which one wouldn’t ordinarily expect to read in a credible paper like The Nation.

Although we see The Nation as a well respected paper, we also recognise that even credible organisations with the best of intentions sometimes lower their guard and, sadly, drop the ball. We believe this is what may have happened in this case, as there is no justification for the obvious twisting of the facts that were clearly stated in the book.

President Jonathan had maintained that he never consulted anybody over the decision to call and congratulate his opponent while the results of the 2015 Presidential election was still being tallied. Whereas the decision to concede defeat was one he took without any compelling, the former President is however grateful to those who were with him at that moment and many other Nigerians that shared in his conviction to put across the historic phone call.

For the avoidance of doubt, the following sentence lifted from the book captured how Jonathan narrated his engagement with the mentioned key appointees of the former President at that critical time in the nation’s political history: “They were recommending sundry alternatives, but I was quiet in the midst of their discussion.” However, this was how The Nation chose to report the narrative: “Okonjo-Iweala, Adoke, Chidoka, Dudafa advised me not to accept defeat”.

It therefore beggars belief that the phrase ‘sundry alternatives’ could be interpreted to mean that the former President was advised by the identified personalities ‘not to accept defeat.’

We always say that the society will be better served if journalists keep their interpretative reporting within the limits of credible and constructive imagination.

Travel / CONFUSION: Road Users Abandon Third Mainland Bridge Hours Earlier Than Intended by sommy25(m): 12:39pm On Aug 23, 2018
The surprisingly free state of the Third Mainland Bridge on Thursday morning, suggested that people might have misunderstood the message, thinking the bridge would be closed by 12 a.m. on Thursday, instead of 12 a.m. on Friday.

The Third Mainland Bridge was unusually free on Thursday morning, as many of its users diverted movement to alternative routes.

The development was possibly a misunderstanding of the announced date of closure.

The Lagos State Government had announced that it would temporarily close down the bridge for four days, “starting from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, 2018”.

However, the surprisingly free state of the Third Mainland Bridge on Thursday morning, suggested that people might have misunderstood the message, thinking the bridge would be closed by 12 a.m. of Thursday, instead of 12 a.m. of Friday.

This is caused by the apparent ambiguity in using midnight, as contained in the message by the Lagos State Government.

The National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), physical sciences laboratory, and a non-regulatory agency of the United States Department of Commerce, explains that “if a date/time is referred to as at midnight on Friday, October 20th’ [or midnight of August 23 as announced by Lagos State], the intention could be either midnight, the beginning of the day or midnight at the end of the day.”

To avoid misunderstanding the time references, NIST advised that “specification of an event as occurring on a particular day at 11:59 p.m. or 12:01 a.m. is a good idea, especially legal documents such as contracts and insurance policies. Another option would be to use 24-hour clock, using the designation of 0000 to refer to midnight at the beginning of a given day (or date) and 2400 to designate the end of a given day (or date).”

Consequently, the confusion could have been better managed, had the announcement simply read “12 a.m. of August 24 till 12 a.m. of August 27, 2018”, or “11:59 p.m. of August 23 till 11:59 p.m. of August 26,” or simply use the 24-hour clock.

The bridge would be reopened at midnight on Sunday, August 26, 2018.

Pending the reopening, the state has advised motorists to use the alternative routes.

Alternative routes include the Ikorodu Road; Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway/Agege Motor Road, and the Gbagada Expressway.

Road users heading to Fadeyi area of Lagos State from Ketu or Ojota are advised to use the Ikorodu road.

Motorists from Lagos, Abeokuta, Agege, Ogba and Ikeja to make use of Oshodi via Mushin Ojuelegba to connect Carter Bridge into Island, while those from Ikorodu, Maryland are to make use of Funsho Williams Avenue, formerly, Western Avenue via Yaba to Oyingbo and connect Eko Bridge into the Island.

Motorists from Okokomaiko, Festac, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway are enjoined to go through Ajegunle via Marina Bridge to Ijora to connect Carter Bridge to Apongbon into Lagos Island.

Also, motorists from the Island are expected to ply Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge into Mainland, while those in Lekki Ajah can also make use of Epe axis through Imota into Ikorodu.

Politics / Sagay Advises FG To Fund Inec's 2019 Election Budget Without NASS Approval by sommy25(m): 12:32pm On Aug 23, 2018
Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), has proposed a solution for the Federal Government to approve funds for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), without awaiting the approval of the National Assembly.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Sagay noted that the seeming delay by the National Assembly on approving funds for the 2019 elections would have negative impact on democracy.

"If elections are not held, it will mean the collapse of our democracy, leading to chaos and anarchy," he said.

"The question that arises is simple. Which is more critical to democracy and the survival of Nigeria: Is it (1) the power of the National Assembly to approve budgets or (2) the survival of democracy and Nigeria itself?

“If the survival of democracy is more important and fundamental to Nigeria’s existence, then failure to approve the budget for elections will trigger the doctrine of necessity, thus compelling the funding of election without the approval of the National Assembly.

“It is simply a question of the survival of democracy and the continued existence of Nigeria. The power of approval of budget is just a single item in the whole of the Constitution. On the contrary, elections and democracy which they support, constitute what the whole Constitution is about.”

Proposing a solution, he said: “The overriding necessity and imperative of elections and democracy simply override the power of National Assembly. If the National Assembly refuses or fails to approve the budget for election, the doctrine of necessity will validate the provision of the funds without the National Assembly’s approval.”

However, Senator Suleiman Nazif, Co-Chairman of the National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC, has said the committee will reconvene on August 27 to conclude work on the INEC budget submitted to it by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sports / Zinedine Zidane Announces Shock Real Madrid Resignation by sommy25(m): 1:46pm On May 31, 2018
Zinedine Zidane has announced that he is leaving Real Madrid less than a week after guiding them to an unprecedented third successive Champions League title.

The club revealed on Thursday that Zidane was to appear in a hastily arranged news conference that caught many by surprise, fuelling speculation that his tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu could be coming to an end.

Zidane confirmed his departure at the start of the news briefing, just five days after he presided over the 3-1 Champions League final win over Liverpool .

"I have decided not to be Real Madrid coach next season," said Zidane, who was joined by club president Florentino Perez.

"I spoke to Florentino yesterday [Wednesday] to tell him my thoughts, my feelings. I know it's a strange moment for everyone involved, but I think it's the right decision.

"I think this team needs to keep winning but I think after three years a change is needed, something different, a different message, different ways of going about things.

"That's why I decided to take this decision. It's a club I love and I love the president too, he brought me to this huge club and I will always be grateful, but I think a change is needed so I will not be here next season."

Even European success, which he also managed in each of his first two seasons in charge of the team, has not been enough to persuade him to prolong his spell.

Madrid's third-place La Liga finish is likely the major factor in Zidane's departure, as Los Blancos ended the season 17 points adrift of bitter rivals and champions Barcelona.

He did, however, confirm that he was not pushed out of the exit door.

"It's my decision," he said. "For many people, this will not make sense, but it does for me. It's time for a change.

"There have been tough times, in the Copa del Rey notably, and I don’t forget those. This club is in my heart. It ended well for me when I was a player and it’s ended well for me as a manager."

Zidane was appointed as Real Madrid boss in January 2016 and took charge of Madrid 149 times. He won 105 of those games, and as well as three Champions League titles, he also enjoyed success in La Liga in 2016-17.

Health / JOHESU Agrees To Suspend Strike June 1 by sommy25(m): 1:30pm On May 30, 2018
ABUJA – In consideration of the plight of health-seeking public and to give room for an amicable resolution of its dispute with the Federal Government, the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, on Wednesday agreed to suspend its 44 days old strike on Friday June 1, 2018.

This decision followed the intervention of the National Industrial Court, NIC, which offered to take over the mediation process between the striking health workers and the government. Before now, an NGO, the Incorporated Trustees of the Kingdom Human Rights Foundation, KHRFI, had obtained a court order against JOHESU; mandating the health workers to suspend their industrial action on the 21st of May, 2018. But, in pursuit of its constitutional rights to either comply or challenge the Court order, JOHESU filed an appeal at the Appellate Court. However, the leadership of JOHESU decided to sheath its sword and direct the members of the union to resume duties since the NIC, as a neutral and impartial organ of the Judiciary, has mandated its mediation centre to take over the negotiation and reconciliation processes within the next 24 hrs in the interest of the public.

Sports / Unai Emery Confirmed New Arsenal Boss by sommy25(m): 11:04am On May 23, 2018
Unai Emery has been confirmed as the new Arsenal manager.

The Spaniard replaces Arsene Wenger in the Emirates hotseat after the Frenchman stepped down after 22 years in north London.

Emery, 46, left French side Paris St Germain at the end of their campaign following a two-year stint during which he won one Ligue 1 title and four domestic cups.

Previously, Emery led Sevilla to three successive Europa League trophies - a proven track record which seemingly saw him emerge as the preferred candidate ahead of former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta for the Emirates Stadium job.

The new manager said: “I am thrilled to be joining one of the great clubs in the game. Arsenal is known and loved throughout the world for its style of play, its commitment to young players, the fantastic stadium, the way the club is run.

"I’m very excited to be given the responsibility to start this important new chapter in Arsenal’s history. I have met Stan and Josh Kroenke and it’s clear they have great ambitions for the club and are committed to bringing future success.

"I’m excited about what we can do together and I look forward to giving everyone who loves Arsenal some special moments and memories.”

On Tuesday evening, the homepage of Emery's personal website displayed a picture of the Spaniard alongside an Arsenal crest.
It carried the message: "Proud to be part of the Arsenal family."

The image was taken down from Emery's website shortly after 11pm, replaced by an error message.

However, Emery was officially unveiled as their new manager on Wednesday on a lucrative deal worth £6million-a-season after agreeing to replace Wenger at the helm.

It is understood Arsenal conducted in-depth interviews with several candidates from a long list of potential managers.

Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona coach, ex-club captain Patrick Vieira and Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri were among those strongly linked.

However, it is believed no one pulled out of the race and the Gunners have settled on their preferred choice.

Arteta, currently assistant manager under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, is said to have expressed reservations over how much control the new head coach would have in transfers.

Emery, though, has worked in such models previously, enjoying great success at Sevilla with sporting director Monchi, who is now at Roma.

Majority owner Stan Kroenke said: “We’re delighted to welcome Unai to Arsenal. He’s a proven winner. We’re confident that he is the right person for the job and that he will work to deliver the triumphs our fans, staff and everyone who cares about Arsenal want.

“Several things stood out during his interview and the entire process; his football knowledge, energy, determination and love of the game.

"His familiarity with our club and our players, the Premier League and the game in Europe were all very impressive. He shares our vision to move forward, to build on the platform created by Arsène Wenger and help this club enjoy greater success.”

Assistant Juan Carlos Carcedo would likely be joining the Spaniard as part of a revamped backroom staff, which could yet see Steve Bould and coach Jens Lehmann stay on at the club.

Sports / Arsenal Set To Appoint Mikel Arteta As New Boss by sommy25(m): 9:24am On May 16, 2018
Arsenal are closing in on appointing Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

Sportsmail understands players have been told that Arteta is 90 per cent certain to replace Arsene Wenger.

The Spaniard, who has been working with Pep Guardiola and Manchester City for the past two seasons, is the preferred candidate of chief executive Ivan Gazidis and influential director Josh Kroenke, son of owner Stan.

Other board members, including head of football relations Raul Sanllehi, had wanted a candidate with a proven track-record.

But Max Allegri, Luis Enrique and Joachim Low appeared to have all dropped out of the race.

Allegri revealed earlier this week he will stay at Juventus next season, Enrique’s demands have proved a huge stumbling block and Low has now agreed an extension to his contract with Germany.

Julian Nagelsmann, another contender, is also staying at his current club Hoffenheim after their director of football Alexander Rosen confirmed the 30-year-old would be in charge next season.

Confirmation of Arteta as the club’s preferred candidate could be ratified by the board by the end of the week.

All that would be left then is for owner Kroenke to give the appointment the green light.

Arteta is fully aware of Arsenal’s interest and would almost certainly accept the job if it was offered to him.

Arsenal want their new manager in place by the start of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Arsenal players are furious with the treatment of highly-respected physio Colin Lewin after he lost his job on Monday.
Lewin, who is hugely popular with the Arsenal squad, was informed on Monday that he would be part of a cull of Wenger’s backroom team.

But the shock news has been met with anger by Gunners players, who are said to be fuming at Lewin’s treatment.

Lewin, widely recognised as one of the best sporting physios in the country, has been at the club for 23 years and formed close relationships with the playing staff.

Not only that, he has intricate knowledge of players’ bodies and the physical problems they carry.

A number of Arsenal players need managing on a day-to-day basis and Lewin played a lead role in ensuring their recovery.

Sports / Re: Arsene Wenger To Leave Arsenal At The End Of The Season As 22-year Reign Ends by sommy25(m): 10:22am On Apr 20, 2018
Arsene Wenger will leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

The Frenchman had another year left on his deal but will leave the club at the end of the campaign.

He announced the news in an emotional letter to the club's supporters.

“After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season," he said.

“I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years."

Wenger joined Arsenal in 1996 and won three Premier League titles during his time with the club.

He led the famous Invincibles side in the 2003-04 season and also won seven FA Cup titles.

Wenger has faced growing pressure over the last few campaigns and there were calls for his departure last summer after missing out on the Champions League.

But the Frenchman signed a two-year deal at the time, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2019.

This season has been one of disappointment with Arsenal sixth and 14 points adrift of the top four.

Arsenal are into the Europa League semi-finals and should they see off Atletico Madrid, the final on May 16 could see him bow out on a high.

“I managed the club with full commitment and integrity. I want to thank the staff, the players, the Directors and the fans who make this club so special," the statement continued.

“I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high.

“To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club.

"My love and support for ever.”

------------

Stan Kroenke:

Majority owner Stan Kroenke said: “This is one of the most difficult days we have ever had in all our years in sport. One of the main reasons we got involved with Arsenal was because of what Arsène has brought to the club on and off the pitch. His longevity and consistency over such a sustained period at the highest level of the game will never be matched.

“Arsène has unparalleled class and we will always be grateful to him. Everyone who loves Arsenal and everyone who loves football owes him a debt of gratitude. Three Premier League titles, including an entire season unbeaten, seven FA Cup triumphs and 20 successive years in the Champions League is an exceptional record. He has also transformed the identity of our club and of English football with his vision for how the game can be played.

“We have high ambitions to build on Arsène’s remarkable tenure and to honour his vision by ensuring that Arsenal competes for and wins the biggest and most important prizes in the game.

“We must now focus on making a strong finish to the season and ask our millions of fans around the world to join us in paying appropriate tribute to one of the greats of Arsenal’s history and one of the greats of the game.”

Religion / There’s Anger In The Land, Says Cardinal Okogie by sommy25(m): 4:05pm On Feb 21, 2018
RETIRED Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie has warned the nation’s leaders to tread softly because there is anger in the nation, arguing that even leading members of the ruling All Progressives Congress at the centre have demonstrated commendable candour by openly acknowledging that the hopes of 2015 have been shattered.
In his latest open letter to the nation, Cardinal Okogie began on a sporty note, reminding the nation that late football commentator, Ernest Okonkwo, was fond of using an Igbo proverb while giving minute-by-minute description of football matches on the radio. “Anytime there was an infringement that escaped the attention of the referee, he would ask his colleagues, Sebastian Ofurum or Tolu Fatoyinbo if they too saw the infringement. If they confirmed what he saw, he would say in Igbo: “What two persons have seen and confirmed to be a boa must not be mistaken for a piece of diamond.” One may apply that maxim to the situation in our country right now. “There is anger in the land. Many voices are echoing it. These voices of anger are so deafening that it can no longer be denied. The level of discontent in Nigeria at this point in time is like the proverbial boa sighted by even more than two persons. It would be unwise to mistake it for a piece of diamond. “It has been sighted by Retired Generals Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida who have spoken of the anger in the land in clear and unmistaken terms. It has been sighted by traditional rulers who have called the attention of government to it. It has been sighted by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria when Bishops went into the corridors of power to speak to power, in the way Biblical prophets directly confronted kings in Israel,” Okogie contended in the letter. Continuing, he maintained that the situation can no longer be treated as the cry of “wailers”, “even leading members of the party ruling at the centre have demonstrated commendable candour by openly acknowledging that the hopes of 2015 have been shattered by the disappointment of 2019. “’Your worst enemy could be your best friend, and your best friend your worst enemy,’ sang Bob Marley. But presidential aides in our country do not seem to grasp the wisdom in those words. By their own reckoning, anyone who raises doubts as to the rightness of government policies, actions and statements is an enemy of government. “He or she is ridiculed as speaking because there is no more access to ill-gotten wealth. A police officer, appointed to his office, demonstrated unspeakable insolence on television, calling an elected state governor a “drowning man”. In other climes he would lose his job. In Nigeria he keeps it. “The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria stood with and for democratic forces in this country during the dark days of military rule. In 1984, when the current President was a military ruler, Nigeria’s Catholic Bishops went to him to inquire as to when he would restore democratic governance. During the lawlessness of military rule, Nigeria’s Catholic Bishops called for elections and called for the release of political prisoners. “Interventions of Nigeria’s Catholic Bishops date back to October 1, 1960, the day Nigeria gained independence, when the Bishops addressed a letter to Nigerians. Fifty years later, the same Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria addressed another letter to Nigerians, entitled “Growing a New Nigeria”. That letter was presented to former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Cathedral on the First Sunday of Lent in 2011. “The Bishops have never failed to offer their advice to successive governments in this country. Every line, every word of every intervention emanating from the Conference was chosen to offer frank and friendly advice. The Bishops did the same thing a few days ago, calling the attention of the President to the anger and disappointment in the land. At the end of their friendly exchange with the President, some of his aides and friends resorted to name calling and gratuitous accusations. “Anyone who has a faint idea of how the Catholic Church is run would know that the Catholic Church does not run on tithes. She has never taught that God’s blessings depend on tithes. No Catholic Bishop in this country has a private jet. Not even the Pope has one. But an uninformed state governor, notorious for being insolent, described the Bishop’s intervention as the wailing of religious leaders who no longer have access to tithes because of this government’s anti-corruption fight. “True friends tell each other the truth. There cannot be sincere friendship where there is no truth. Those who are telling our President the truth are his true friends. Those who are shielding him from the truth while insulting those who tell him the truth are his real enemies. “By insulting well-meaning Nigerians who happen to disagree with policies of government they are not winning friends for the President. They are in fact helping to grow the rank and file of the angry. Whoever loves this President would want him to succeed. Whoever wants him to succeed must tell him the truth. For if he fails, Nigeria fails. “The truth is: Nigerians are not happy. As we said early in this administration, Nigerians are hungry and angry. They are not happy because their lives and their belongings are not safe. They work so hard while the value of the money they earn cannot make them enjoy basic things of life. Nigerians are unhappy because the economy has been so mismanaged that some cannot pay the school fees of their children. “Nigerians are unhappy because they have not got jobs. Nigerians are unhappy because, instead of hope, they are offered propaganda and insults by the President’s men. Nigerians are angry because their loved ones are butchered by herdsmen while the response of government is woeful. “The issue at hand is more serious than getting re-elected. It cannot be resolved by way of a facile intra-party reconciliation. Before it can succeed, this government must admit it has failed. Before it can retrace its steps, this government must admit that it has strayed from the path of keeping the promises it made, promises that made Nigerians vote as they did in 2015. Apart from seeking intra-party reconciliation, this government must first reconcile with Nigerians by treating them with respect. “Despite the insolence of some of its officials, we still pray for this government: may this government not suffer the fate of the proverbial hunter’s dog that got lost in the forest because it obstinately refused to heed the hunter’s whistle,” Okogie further warned.

Politics / Atiku Supported Saraki To Be Senate President, Says Dogara by sommy25(m): 4:30pm On Dec 13, 2017
Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives, says former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar “solidly” backed Bukola Saraki’s bid to be senate president in 2015 — despite strong opposition from the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), apparently including President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dogara himself was not supported to be speaker by the party hierarchy, but he braved all opposition — including that from Bola Tinubu, a respected leader of APC — and went on to defeat the favoured Femi Gbajabiamila in a tight contest.

Ahmed Lawan was the choice of the APC leadership for senate president.

Saraki, Dogara and Atiku all moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 after the then-ruling party was internally fractured.

In his biography, ‘A Reed Made Flint’, authored by Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu, Dogara provided more insight into the politics that ushered in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in May 2015.

The biography, made available to only TheCable, is due for public presentation on December 26, 2017, to mark the 5oth birthday of the speaker.

Dogara told the author: “There was this particular time we were meeting with our leader in the North-East, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar at his residence. Our governor (Mohammed Abubakar) had come into town and some of our stakeholders in APC Bauchi had gone to see Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Somehow, Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) and one other person walked into that meeting and he did not waste time in pushing his Gbajabiamila agenda forward.

“He spoke passionately about the role he had played in APC, the way he had built bridges between the South-West and the North and he appealed to my brothers and sisters who were there, all the political leaders and stake holders of APC from my state to prevail on me to stop this race and support his candidate Femi Gbajabiamila to become Speaker. After he had spoken, he left.

“If I don’t say this to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s credit I will not be fair to him. It will amount to travesty. At the time when most leaders in the APC were not showing sympathy to our cause, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar came out as one solid voice in support of both the candidature of the now Senate President (Bukola Saraki) and my humble self.

“He said the North-East must have a position and it was his duty as a leader from the North-East to support that goal. And more so, because of the religious demography of Nigeria there was the need to have a Northern minority Christian in government as that would help to smoothen religious engagement and relationship in the North and put paid to the insinuation that APC was just a Muslim party.”

While Dogara started his speakership on a relatively smooth note, Saraki was charged before the code of conduct tribunal over allegations of false declaration of assets while he was governor of Kwara state from 2003-2007.

Atiku recently returned to the PDP, where he is expected to contest for the presidential ticket ahead of a potential battle with Buhari in 2019.

Sports / Jose Mourinho Officially Named Manchester United Manager. by sommy25(m): 5:15pm On May 27, 2016
Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester United, the club has confirmed.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has been handed a three-year deal at Old Trafford, ending months of speculation linking him to the United job.

The 53-year-old replaces Louis van Gaal, who was sacked on Monday despite leading the club to their first FA Cup win in 12 years at the weekend.

Announcing the appointment, Ed Woodward said: “José is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the Club forward.”

Mourinho has been an open admirer of Manchester United for many years and has been expected to replace Van Gaal since his sacking by Chelsea in December 2015.

“To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game," the Portuguese said. "It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.

“I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.”

Mourinho has eight league titles to his name from his days with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid, including three Premier League triumphs.

But United have not finished higher than fourth in the three years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired after collecting 13 league crowns in his 26-year reign.

They finished in fifth place in 2015-16, prompting the decision to dismiss Van Gaal and replace him with his former Barcelona coaching protege.

The club have yet to confirm whether assistant manager Ryan Giggs will remain as part of Mourinho's backroom staff.

Politics / Re: Buhari Ruling Nigeria With Medieval Mindset, Says Prof Utomi by sommy25(m): 11:10am On May 10, 2016
We need more people to do what this man is doing. Our leaders rule us this way because to them we are like toothless dogs.

Buhari ruling Nigeria with medieval mindset, says Prof Utomi

…Proffers solutions to Nigeria’s economic crisis

By Job Osazuwa

A professor of political economy and management expert, Professor Patrick Utomi, said Nigerians and the government must be alive to their responsibilities if the country was to witness genuine transformation.

The former presidential candidate and founder of Centre for Value in Leadership (CVL), was guest speaker at a Breakfast Meeting organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Victory Chapel, Province 21, Magodo, Lagos State. The theme of the programme was: “Christian Leadership in Contemporary World”.

He began his message by charging the audience to initiate the kind of change they were clamouring for. He said it was unfortunate that people would stay at the comfort of their rooms only to complain about everything and do nothing about it. He stated that the man with the biggest authority in an organisation might not be the most effective person in moving the organisation towards its goal.

According to the erudite scholar, Nigeria has over the years, been immersed in poor leadership style, saying it was the cause of the crises the country was currently facing.

He also lamented that another major problem with leadership in Africa was the people’s refusal to be exposed to information.

“Readers are leaders. If we don’t read, we won’t anticipate problems or know how to deal with them upfront.”

He recalled how the Boko Haram insurgency could have been prevented when it was at its infant stage years ago.

“To lead, you must be knowledgeable. People don’t follow somebody who doesn’t know where he is going. Otherwise, you fall into a ditch.”

Utomi urged the government to invest in its human resources – their education and overall well-being in order to yield demographic dividends. He expressed the belief that quality leadership would make the seemingly impossible to be possible.

He recalled that he was shocked and couldn’t forget the day former president Goodluck Jonathan said Nigeria’s economy was doing well because it was the fastest growing private jets market in the world. He said it was unfortunate that Nigerians were accumulating wealth by buying obnoxious things. He said the same people had started auctioning such items.

Utomi said he could not fathom the paradox of corruption, religiosity and happiness linked to Nigerians.

“Nigerians were said to be the most religious people in the world. Just about the same time, the transparency index found Nigeria to be the most corrupt people in the world, and another study found Nigerians to be the happiest people in the world. I don’t know how many people can resolve this paradox,” he noted.

Professor Utomi told Daily Sun, shortly after the programme, that he had always remained a teacher.

He said: “For the fact that I am active on the board of several companies; that is taking teaching to the boardroom literally. I am on the board of maybe 30 or more companies around the world. I still teach at the Lagos Business School.

“Yes, I am also a politician. I am a member of the ruling party, as they say in Nigeria. I understand what ruling means – a party in power, I guess. As the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo said few weeks ago, himself, I, and a few others, wrote the roadmap and manifestoes of the party.”

On Christian leadership, Utomi said where the world was at the moment was as a result of Christian leadership. According to him, the Western civilisation was made possible through Christian influence, citing the spread of education as a typical example of the role of the church in promoting leadership. Christianity was responsible for modern education and modern education has been a fulcrum of human advancement and science, he maintained.

On the current economic crisis, he said President Muhammadu Buhari was ruling the country as if he was still in the medieval period.

His words: “The problem with Buhari’s administration is his medieval mindset. He excludes rather than includes. So, he does not get the best idea. He is insular. I don’t push him in this conversation but I am sure that if I put my friend, the vice president under pressure, he will admit what I am saying. Because of their medieval mindset, they have created a country that is more divided than they met it. And that is a problem for leadership that is marching towards progress.”

When asked how long Nigerians might wait for the change they voted for, he said: “Everything is based on context. Take a look at the mismanagement of this fuel thing; the whole idea is nonsensical. It doesn’t have to go on like this; you are punishing Nigerian people unnecessarily. The sufferings that Nigerians have endured in the last couple of weeks over this petrol crisis have reduced productivity. If you throw it open to people across the world to bring petrol to Nigeria and sell at any price, you will discover that within a year, the price of petrol will be lower than the government’s fixed price today.

“You (Buhari) set up a committee called Transition Committee. It suggested that you deregulate the whole thing about crude oil, but no, you won’t. Your ideas go back 30 years and they are irrelevant to this world. Open up your mind and listen to people and you can make progress. To lead is to serve.”

The pastor of the province, Peter Egho, said the breakfast meeting was to tackle the enormous challenges confronting Nigerians, including the church members. He said Nigeria needed someone with a solution to the present economic disorder. “Those who have the right orientation and boldness are needed at these difficult times,” he stated.

Assistant Pastor of the province, Bisi Olowoyo, told Daily Sun that the programme was to empower Christians to live a fulfilled life. He added that God had already made certain things available to His children, but noted that they need to take some practical steps for their manifestation.
