15 killed, over 50 houses burnt as ACN supporters engage in violent protest From ROSE EJEMBI, Makurdi Tuesday, October 18, 2011 Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section At least 15 persons as well as over 50 houses have been burnt in a violent protest which erupted early hours of yesterday (Monday) in Ugbah, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. According to eyewitnesses’ report, a young money lender was killed by yet to be identified hoodlums inside his house on Sunday night. Daily Sun source revealed that while the police were still trying to unravel those behind the gruesome murder of the young man, some youth suspected to be members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) mobilized and started attacking the homes of prominent PDP members in the area. In the ensuing protest, no fewer than 10 persons were either hacked down or shot dead while over 50 houses were completely razed down. Some of the houses touched included those of the traditional ruler, Zaki Terngu, two houses belonging to Kertyo, that of Iwar among others while four persons including a pregnant woman were also killed in the traditional ruler’s compound. The Governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam who was among the first callers at the scene of the protest, yesterday described the mayhem as the handiwork of the major opposition party (ACN) in the state. The governor noted that the situation was totally unacceptable. He stated that the ACN had gone too far this time and called on the police and other security agencies to wade into the matter. “Politics is not rascality, opposition is not criminality. ACN has gone too far and we cannot continue to condone this kind of arson. Anyone involved, no matter how highly placed would be made to face the wrath of the law.” Suswam who decried the magnitude of the wanton destruction of life and property in Ugbah, his home local government area lamented that the opposition are bent on making state ungovernable for him. He recalled that there was a thanksgiving somewhere recently where the ACN governorship candidate, Prof. Steve Ugbah and former Governor, Senator George Akume were making inciting statements capable of causing rancour in the state. The Governor who called on PDP supporters and people of the state to remain calm disclosed that already, soldiers as well as mobile policemen have been deployed to the area to bring the situation under control. Reacting, State Chairman of the ACN, Abba Yaro alleged that two chieftains of his party were killed in Logo by suspected PDP members. Yaro also alleged that the PDP had at a meeting in the home of one Commissioner, vowed to eliminate prominent chieftains of the ACN. He maintained that the party would not be deterred until it reclaims its stolen mandate. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Alaribe Ejike, (ASP) confirmed the report and noted that the police had set up investigation to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the mayhem. |

ekt_bear: When you finish addressing the post below and others I have made to show that Lagos and the entire SW are as unsafe as anywhere else in Nigeria. What do the Americans know about Nigeria? ================================================================ Villagers discover suspected kidnappers' den in Ogun State By Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji August 1, 2011 02:04PM A shocking discovery of what appears to be a den of kidnappers was made at the weekend in a village in Ogun State, with a number of decomposing mutilated bodies strewn across the spot. A visit by NEXT to the site, in company of a local vigilante group who uncovered the site, near Labiade-Akaso village in Onipepeye Community, along Abeokuta-Owode-Sagamu expressway, revealed the bodies of some suspected victims of the killers, including the mutilated body of a baby. However, as at the time of this report, a suspected member of the gang, allegedly caught inside a Jeep car near the spot, had been arrested and was being detained at Owode Police Station, while police sources informed that the suspect would be transferred to the police headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta for further interrogation. Narrating how the den was uncovered, a leader of the vigilante group in Obafemi Owode Local Government, Sakiru Ewuoso said they received information from villagers about the suspicious movement of the suspect. Mr Ewuoso said in view of this, the group accosted the suspect, who informed them that his car had a fault and that he needed some water for the radiator. He said his volunteers then provided the suspect with water, which he poured in the car's radiator and drove off. However, because of their suspicion, he said his group decided to wait a while and went into hiding after the man left. The waiting paid off as, a few hours later, the suspect returned to the scene in the company of other suspected members of the gang and was freshly confronted by the vigilante group. Mr Ewuoso said the suspects, on sighting the vigilante group, opened fire on them but they overpowered the suspects, leading to the arrest of one of them and confiscation of the Jeep car, while the others fled. "In our search for those fleeing, we decided to comb the bush around the area, where we noticed a footpath, which eventually led them to the den, where numbers of corpses were discovered," he said. "The police was immediately alerted and they did not waste time in following us to the den, where they themselves saw the gory stage of some decomposed bodies. We had since handed over the arrested suspect to the police at Owode Police Station, along with the Jeep Car." The traditional ruler of Owode-Egba, whose jurisdiction covers the community affected, Kolawole Aremu Sowemimo expressed shock over the development, recalling that information about the discovery was brought to his notice by the vigilante group. "Following the information when the vigilante group came to my palace, I immediately alerted the local government authority and the police. So the police authority in conjunction with the vigilante group swung into action leading to the apprehension of one of the suspects," Mr Sowemimo said. Fear in the village He, however, appealed to his subjects to remain calm, saying all hands were on deck to get to the root of the matter. "I don't want things like this in my domain, and I am also calling on all my subjects to always report any suspicious movement and unfamiliar faces," he said. A resident of Labiade-Akaso village, Musiliu Osho said the situation was worrisome and village children might be forced to stop schooling because of the fear they might be kidnapped by suspected ritualists. "Our children can now no longer go to schools on their own, except we take them there and return them," he said in Yoruba. "We have to stop them from going to school for fear of these ritualists. We are appealing to the state government to come to our aid." The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, equally confirmed the discovery as well as the arrest of a suspect, adding that investigation into the matter was in full course. "The Commissioner of Police, Nicholas Nkemdene has ordered the transfer of the suspect to Eleweran Police Headquarters, while investigations have commenced in earnest," he said. "If the suspect is found wanting, he would not be spared while collaborators would also face the wrath of the law." Armed robbers in Lagos also access waterfront compounds by boat. U.S. citizens, as well as Nigerians and other expatriates, have become victims of armed robbery at banks, grocery stores, and on airport roads during both daylight and evening hours. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_987.html Lagos is safe. Kidnappings continue to be another security concern. In 2011, there were three reported kidnappings of U.S. citizens in Nigeria. The most recent occurred in September in Ikeja, Lagos State. Others have occurred in the Niger Delta and in Imo State. Also, a British national and an Italian national were kidnapped in Kebbi state in May 2011. Since January 2009, over 140 foreign nationals have been kidnapped in Nigeria, including five U.S. citizens since November 2010. Six foreign nationals were killed during these abductions, while two U.S. citizens were also killed in separate kidnapping attempts in Port Harcourt in April 2010. Local authorities and expatriate businesses operating in Nigeria assert that the number of kidnapping incidents throughout Nigeria remains underreported. Hehehehe |

Q: Is Lagos safe? A: As long as you are sensible and follow advice the city is safe during the day. According to my husband's company policy, it's not recommended to walk around outside the compound at night. You are able to go out for social occasions, like dining, as long as you go in your car door-to-door. Our house is in a secure compound; you are given advice with regards to tradespersons but the compound is very secure and safe. http://www.expatarrivals.com/article/interview-with-josephine-a-british-expat-living-in-lagos How would anyone describe a place described with such words as safe? |

Crime increases at night in most areas, particularly in Lagos and on highways. We strongly advise you not to travel after dark. The number of authorised and unauthorised checkpoints in city centres also increases at night and requests to pay on-the-spot fines are not uncommon. Australian Govt |

Lagos’ rising wave of crimes | Print | E-mail Written by Olalekan Olabulo Sunday, 17 April 2011 [Some suspected armed robbers paraded by policemen in Lagos State.] Some suspected armed robbers paraded by policemen in Lagos State. The increasing rate of criminal activites in Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital city, seems to have taken another dimension as armed robbers and other hoodlums now lay siege to the state. OLALEKAN OLABULO, in this report, captures the fear and untold sufferings of its residents in the hands of men of the underworld. RESIDENTS of Lagos State are getting increasingly worried about the upsurge of criminal activities committed on a daily basis in the state. The relative peace, which the state has enjoyed in the recent time, is fast giving way to the onslaught of men of the underworld, who have become a thorn in the flesh of the residents. Ultimately, the residents now live in palpable fear praying that dare-devil criminals would not visit their homes and unleash unimaginable terror on them. The catalogue of victims is endless. The criminals seem to have added a new twist to their operations as they prey upon the state using every available means, strategem and opportunity to prosecute their nefarious activities. Time of the day is not a barrier. They carry out their opeartions at any time using tricks and sheer violence to achieve their aims. A journalist with a leading national newspaper in Nigeria was, a few days ago, attacked by armed robbers around Ojota area of the state. Sunday Tribune learnt that the hapless journalist was trailed all the way from Ilupeju Industrial Estate to Oshodi by the armed robbers. The journalist, however, survived the attack, but has not forgotten the 15-minute encounter with the armed robbers. Lateef, a cyber café operator at Ajisegiri Street in Ladipo area of Oshodi, will not forget in a hurry how armed robbers, not only robbed him of a day’s proceeds, but also took away the phones and other valuables of his customers. He described the robbery incident as “dream-like”. Lateef, while relieving the ugly incident, stated that the armed robbers stormed his cafe around 8 o’clock in February 2011 and robbed him and his cutomers at gun point. According to him, three people had entered the shop posing “as if they wanted to browse. No one could have mistaken the guys as people who could hurt a fly. I was wrong in my judgement as event proved them to be dangerous persons.“ He further added that he was surprised when two of them brought out pistols and subjected everybody in the cafe to a thorough search. The armed robbers, who reportedly came on a motor bike, operated for about 25 minutes and carted away items worth thousands of naira. Early this year, three members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), including their leader in Ebute Meta area of the state, were killed by a gang of yet-to-be-identified gunmen, who invaded the area. The vigilante members were responding to gunshots in the area, when they lost their lives, in an incident that created tension in Ebute Meta. Residents of Adeyemi Primary School area of Alakuko in the state also had their bitter pills of armed robbery resurgence about two weeks ago, when a gang of about 20 heavily armed robbers invaded the area. The robbers were said to have operated for more than three hours moving from one house to another. A resident of the area, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking with Sunday Tribune stated that the robbers announced their arrival into the street with heavy gunshots that shook the entire community. The resident stated that though his house was not attacked, no fewer than 90 per cent of the houses in the street were robbed, with valuables including jewelry, phones and cash taken away. Ticketers of the state’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) at Lagos Island also suffered from the rising wave of violence in Lagos State. An eye witness informed Sunday Tribune that gun men had severally robbed the BRT personnel and made away with their proceeds. The armed robbers were said to have had a free day operating between Leventis and TBS, not minding the presence of police vans in some parts of the island, they operated without any fear of being confronted by policemen. The Lagos Island story is just one of the numerous tales of the rise in armed and petty robbery in Lagos State. Residents of Iba, Agege, Iyana Ipaja, Ikeja, Abule Egba, Ketu, Ikorodu and other parts of the state can attest to the fact that crime rate is increasing in the state daily. More worrisome about the rate of armed robbery in the state is the brazen use of firearms by hoodlums who are also suspected to be cult members. A nursing mother was killed early this year by suspected cult members, after accusing her of shielding a member of a rival faction. The killing of the nursing mother nearly degenerated into a major crisis in the state, as a monarch was forced to flee the town. Residents of Ikorodu have also had their share of cultists attacks. A youngster in the community was recently macheted to death during a clash that ensued over a disagreement among youths in the town. A journalist, who resides in Ikorodu, informed Sunday Tribune that the rate at which youths freely use arms in the area is worrisome. The journalist, who identified himself simply as Wale, alleged that cultists had completely taken over the control of Ikorodu and that the security operatives in the area had not been able to checkmate them. The use of motorcycle for armed robbery is also on the rise in Lagos. Robbers, who operate on motorcycles, are gradually finding their way back to Lagos, after they had been smoked out of the state by the state government. These “motorcycle armed robbers” take advantage of the traffic situation in the state to wreck havoc on law abiding residents. The Lagos State police command has denied the rising wave of crime in the state, saying the state had witnessed a reduction in the level of crime when compared to what it used to be a few years ago, though the residents claimed that the police command was being economical with the truth and probably wanted to feign ignorance of their plight in the hands of men of the underworld. http://tribune.com.ng/sun/crime-features/3636-lagos-rising-wave-of-crimes
