Webmasters / Re: 7 Tips For Selecting Your Domain Name by SpringWebHost: 2:08am On Apr 27, 2015
One way you can quickly optimize a page is by removing images, videos from your pages. You can use http://TinyPNG.com to compress your images if you need to include them but please let them be few especially on your homepage. On videos, you can host them externally, let them be very short clips.

Regarding hosting, if you want to step up, I think you should consider Virtual Private Server (VPS) or Semi-Dedicated Server and when the website starts making consistent good money, you can then move to a Dedicated Server. Dedicated server takes a whole lot of money and technical know-how to maintain if you get a good one.

CityNG:

I agree and you're right and this is why ALL my sites will render for mobile viewing currently. But you're right I should do more work on making them even much more mobile friendly. I'll be working more on that on CupidNG.Com starting next month.

My biggest issue is bandwidth and speed of loading on cellphones. I use Cloudflare but I think I need a dedicated server not cohost.
Webmasters / Re: 7 Tips For Selecting Your Domain Name by SpringWebHost: 12:51am On Apr 27, 2015
Unfortunately, that's where we are headed ie cellphone(mobile) viewing and it's even getting more complicated since mobile devices and data subscriptions are becoming affordable. You must optimize your website for mobile viewing to have an edge.

I really loved the former design I had for one of my websites http://JoomlaExtended.com but the conversion rate was very poor. I just started working on a lighter version for the home page and the results are already amazing.

I think you should think along this line, be fully optimized for mobile viewing.

CityNG:

There will be massive updates later when my customer base have graduated from cellphone browsing (which I personally dislike) to using desktop and laptops primarily and on a large scale. Most of my time is spent on Ibadan.City.NG, Kuluso.Com and eLanceNG.Com

Thanks.
Webmasters / Re: 7 Tips For Selecting Your Domain Name by SpringWebHost: 11:19pm On Apr 26, 2015
The one benefit that stands out for you to have a Country Code Top-Level Domain, generally referred to as ccTLD is that it sends a "strong signal" that your website is intended for a specific country and it tends to have better search-engine rankings in that specific country.

So your City.NG will be better ranked for visitors from Nigeria than City.com if the two websites have the same targeted keyword-rich content even though City.com is older than City.NG in the domain registry. You will have an improved local search opportunities.

Ibadan.City.NG is cool. I think City.NG, needs a facelift. You are a great guy but you may doing too many personal websites at a time especially if you are working alone. Try and come up with an authority website.

CityNG:

I know most are put off by the highway robbery price of .NG but if you're a serious Nigerian company then a .NG is a primary domain extension for you to have. It grinds and easily identifies your business as Nigerian serious. IMHO.

Take City.NG for example wink , astute travelers will immidiately know that it has to do with Nigerian cities, yes?

Businesses fold up all the time but if you could recall, 9jahoster.com offered its clients the option to move their websites before folding up. I think that was fair enough.

There are hosting firms in Nigeria with over ten years in hosting business and they are solid.

Ok. But bear in mind...

Which company in Nigeria do you think can run, maintain server resources and technical know-hows required to have a server in Nigeria?
Do you think you could have been able to afford a .ng name considering the above?

Even at 15k or so for a .ng, people still find it difficult to register. The reason why it is so expensive compared to some other country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domains is that, the market here is limited compared to the cost of keeping .ng active at the registry.

.gov is exclusive to government agencies as .edu is to education, you'll require some government official documents to register them. THEY ARE ALL SERVERS ABROAD...

musicwriter:

I'm aware of all these you're talking about. My concern have been on the .ng domain, only.

I will verify this claim of yours. I don't believe our government domains like .gov.ng is hosted in foreign countries.

Webmasters / Re: Advice Needed: Is Whogohost.com The Best Nigeria Web Hosting Provider by SpringWebHost: 12:24pm On Apr 25, 2015
Ok. There is a group called ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), it is responsible for allotting country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domains.

In plain terms, ICANN, a foreign organization is responsible for the .ng allocation to Nigeria and the servers for the .ng are not located in Nigeria. Before you can propose a domain name extension(eg .ng, .anything), you must be a government or some big shot with millions of dollars to spend to acquire the status of a default registrant of such domain extension.

In a nutshell, we do not have servers in Nigeria.

musicwriter:

Sorry, I'm talking about .ng domains not .com. Not even .com.ng
Webmasters / Re: Advice Needed: Is Whogohost.com The Best Nigeria Web Hosting Provider by SpringWebHost: 11:35am On Apr 25, 2015
Hi,

From your post I know you have limited knowledge of how the website hosting services work. For clarification sake, we do not have hosting servers in Nigeria and non in Africa at the moment.

What we do here is, we resell web hosting services of those guys abroad. Technically, we are marketers of some foreign services. Quite a number of Nigerian host are very effective and reliable.

Before we started the hosting business, we've tried some Nigerian host and they were pure mess until we met a hosting company called www.syskay.com. The owner is a great guy with a wealth of knowledge and experience about website hosting. But as our business grew, we felt the need to be more independent and have more control over our hosting service, hence we established http://SpringWebHost.com that now has over 300 client base.

To be very honest, the most terrible experience we got was from one Indian hosting company. We lost some clients after the incidence and even refunded some their money in a bid to keep our reputation.

So, when you want to consider a Nigerian host, which I'll always recommend especially to a newbie in the website business, please note the following.

1. Customer service. Talk to live person or email to know how quick their responses are to inquiries.
2. Testimonies: Ask in a forum like this to know how credible a particular company is.
3. Ask a friend or someone you trust to make a referral.
4. When in doubt, try with the minimum package a host offers and probably use a site that's not so serious.
5. Age of a company matters a whole lot. You can check how old a hosting company has been by simply checking the WHOIS of the website. You can do this by going to www.whois.ws.
6. Google the website hosting company's name, you'll be amazed, what you'll discover.

musicwriter:
I often wonder how Nigerian web hosts run their business in this country where electricity isn't guaranteed for a day. This business requires 24/7 power supply 365 days a year. I strongly believe this's the most awkward business someone can do in Nigeria, unless the hosting could be outsourced overseas.

Webmasters / 7 Tips For Selecting Your Domain Name by SpringWebHost: 12:07pm On Apr 24, 2015
Thinking up a great domain name is easy. Of course, with the nearly 275 million existing domain names, finding one that hasn’t already been taken … well, that’s a lot harder. But good domain names are still out there. It just takes a little time and effort to find the right one.

In this first half of a two part article on finding your domain name, we’ll cover eight basic tips for selecting your perfect (or reasonably close to perfect) domain name.

Stick With .com
Whenever possible, choose a .com extension. There’s nothing wrong with a .net, .org, or other top level domain. However, there’s a lot more right with a .com extension. When someone hears your domain name, if they forget the extension, they’re automatically going to try adding .com to the name when they get home. Take advantage of that tendency.

Make it Easy to Type

If your business name is hard to spell, you might try an easier to spell version of the name. For example, if Jayne Mansfield had a website, she might want to go with JaneMansfield.com instead of or, better yet, in addition to JayneMansfield.com. For your website, consider registering all alternate spellings of your domain name.

Make it Easy to Remember
[Nike Domain Name Just Do It] As W.C. Fields said, “It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.” Or how you’re known. A well known slogan or catch phrase might make a better domain name (or, again, an additional domain name) for your business. Even though they have plenty of brand name recognition, Nike registered JustDoIt.com in addition to their regular Nike.com domain name. Actor Michael J. Fox might be known as Mike to family and friends, but to the world he’s Michael J. Fox and, therefore, his domain is MichaelJFox.com.

Shorter is Better

As of 2013, all of the four letter domain names were gone. The three letter domains were taken over a decade before. But that’s no reason to use the full sixty-three characters available in your domain name. Stick to fewer than four words and under twenty characters if at all possible.

Check for Appropriateness
Read, re-read, and have friends read your website to make sure no hidden messages exist in the name. Imagine your surprise if your domain for exchanging information with experts, www.ExpertsExcchange.com, turned out to also promote very knowledgeable gender transformations: www.ExpertSexChange.com.

Don’t Use Texting Slang
While texting slang can definitely keep your domain name short - following the tip above - it makes for a confusing mess that’s hard to remember for most people.

Build Your Brand
The most important tip is to keep your brand in mind and continue to build it. With every advertisement someone reads, every web search someone performs, and every email you send, you’re building your brand with a custom domain name.

The Quick Takeaway
Finding a great domain name can be challenging but it can also be rewarding and a lot of fun. Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to your own great domain.

Webmasters / How To Rescue Your Website From The Clutches Of A Bad Web Designer Or Bad Host by SpringWebHost: 12:34pm On Apr 23, 2015
Most of us assume that if our business has a domain name and a website, “www.yourcompany.com”, that we are the legal owner of the domain name, “yourcompany.com” right? Well, maybe….

From time to time, more frequently than one would think likely, I get emails from my visitors asking me if it is possible to move a website from an errant web designer or a bad web host without the cooperation of that person or company. This may happen because the web developer or web host has refused to relinquish control of the site when asked to. For example, they may not have given the owner his/her login and password so that the latter can access the site to update it themselves. This article attempts to address the problem.

The Context of the Question

The people who ask me this question usually have slightly different circumstances. The most common scenario is that they have hired a web designer to create and maintain a website for them, and that designer has ignored their requests for the site to be updated. And when they ask the designer to return the website to them, they meet a wall of silence. Another common scenario is where their web host has gone bad in some way (or even missing), and they want to move their site elsewhere.

Before you take the steps written here, consider the following:

Are you sure there is no misunderstanding between you and your designer as to the scope of his duties? Re-read your contract with that person. Does it specify that he/she update your website or does the fee you paid only include the initial design work? Maintenance work (that is, updating of your website) usually involves a monthly (or annual) fee, over and above the monthly (or annual) web hosting fees. If you only made a one-time payment, chances are that it only covers the initial creation of the site. (You didn't think that a small one-time fee paid at the beginning was going to commit your designer to maintaining your site for the rest of his/her natural life did you?)

Do not use this procedure as a means of resolving your dispute with your web designers. That is, if you have withheld payment from them for some reason, and they're ignoring you because you've not paid up, this article will not solve your problem. Your designers will probably just haul you to court for breach of contract (for failing to pay up).

Basically, if you have a legal dispute with your designers, get help from a lawyer, not from some random website on the Internet, even one with a name like "JoomlaExtended.com".

Put simply, this article does NOT discuss contract disputes and legal remedies. It merely discusses the technical means that you can use to reclaim a website that legally and rightfully belongs to you. And it assumes that you no longer have access to your web hosting account: that is, you cannot log into your account to download a copy of all your files (via FTP or through your web host's control panel), nor are you able to modify your website's files.

Recently a new client came to us to redesign his website. However, when we investigated the registration of the domain name, we discovered he was not the legal owner of his domain — his past web designer was! That’s because his web designer’s name was listed as the official “registrant” with the domain name. Our client was shocked, but unfortunately, this is a situation we have encountered many times before.

Whois is the legal owner of your domain name?

The question of domain name ownership isn't always clear cut. Just because you are operating the website does not mean that you are the domain owner in a legal sense. So who is? In actuality, the domain owner is the person (or company) that registered the domain on your behalf. Many times, this is not the business owner, but rather someone the owner hired to create the website. So if your domain name was registered by your web developer or graphic designer, they may well be considered the “legal owner” of your domain if they are listed as the domain’s “registrant”. It’s important to confirm that your site is registered to your company or the company owner. Otherwise, the one who is registered and is considered the “legal owner” of the site, could cause problems for you later on.

How to Check for Domain Name Ownership

You can check whether or not your domain is registered to you on the website http://whois.ws/whois/YourDomainName.com. Whois.ws offers an easy, domain owner lookup to determine the registrant of your site. It is also a handy site to see what domain names are available, in case you need to find another one. To do so, simply put your domain name in the dialogue box and you will be able to view your whois record of your site, including the most important entry under “Registrant” and “Administrative Contact”. If you are listed there, all is well. If not…. We have included a screenshot of our whois of our domain JoomlaExtended.com as an example.

What do you do if you are NOT the legal owner of your domain name?

If you are not the name listed under “registrant”, hopefully, you recognize the name that is! And, hopefully you can identify them as the person who registered the domain name for you. Another hope is that you are still on good terms with the person who set up the domain name ownership for you.

Most web developers, designers, etc. who regularly register domain ownership know that their client’s name should be in the registration, not their own. However, others may just not realize the legal ramifications of their actions. In trying to register the website on your behalf, they may have just unknowingly put in their own contact information without any ulterior motive. In this case, they would probably cooperate if asked to change the domain name registration over to your name.

A disreputable web developer, however, could have registered incorrectly on purpose, either to hold you hostage to their fee structure, or to make it difficult for you to switch vendors. They may not cooperate with you, in which case, you need to take action.

Resolving Disputed Domain Name Ownership

The main goal is to get your domain name registration changed by the registrar. Now a registrar cannot cancel, suspend or transfer a domain name without consent of the registrant or a court order. So, if you check your domain name registration and find that you are not the registered party, you must ask the registrant on file to relinquish their domain name ownership. If they refuse, you will need to contact ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and settle the manner using the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).

ICANN is responsible for coordinating many functions of the internet including the DNS (Domain name system), IP (internet protocol), addresses, codes (gTLD and ccTLD), space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, and root server system and top-level domain management. In 1999, in response to rising claims of this “cybersquatting” and “abusive or bad faith” registrations, ICANN formed the UDRP specifically to settle such domain name registration issues. Over 17,000 complaints have been filed under the UDRP since.

The UDRP has a quick, affordable resolution process in place for those who need it which begins by filing a complaint with an approved dispute resolution provider. A list of approved providers that can help you regain domain name ownership is available here.

In order to settle a cybersquatting complaint, the real owner or owner of the “trademark” must prove several things:

That they have a legally recognized name that is identical or near identical to the domain name;

That the registrant on file has no legitimate rights to the domain name; and there has been some evidence of bad faith abuse.

UDRP disputes are settled by mutual agreement, court action or voluntary arbitration and according to ICANN statistics, the majority of proceedings resolve in disposition of the domain name back to the owner.

Your Domain’s Administrative Contact:

In some cases, there may also be an administrative contact—someone that has been authorized to change the registrant name. Many times this is the web developer, because it is common for them to be the authorized, responsible party for the maintenance of the website content and administration. Also, in the development phase, it is often easier for the web developer to be the administrative contact because he can temporarily host the domain on his own site or in another place before it goes live.

Regardless of how much you trust them, it makes sense to ensure that nobody has the power to be the legal registrant except you. It is akin to giving your friend Tunde the title to your car for safekeeping, even though you are driving it yourself. If Tunde ever needs a few bucks, he can sell the car, and the fact that you have been driving it for the past year makes no difference at all. Tunde holds the title.

If you are looking to establish a domain name or are experiencing problems with your domain name ownership, contact us at http://SpringWebHost.com for help.

Webmasters / Starting A Web Site Hosting Business by SpringWebHost: 11:44pm On Nov 01, 2014
Starting a web-site hosting company is one of the easiest options, which is pretty viable without really spending a fortune.
Website hosting business doesn't require any infrastructural investment, and if you decide to take a reseller hosting package or VPS, you won't even have to put in a lot of initial investment either. Here are some basic tips to start a website hosting business.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 7 Days

Here's How:
Buying a Reseller/VPS/Dedicated Hosting Package: You can take cheap reseller hosting packages to start off, but I'd advise you to take a decent package so that you don't need to monitor the disk space usage and bandwidth for few months.
When your business needs grow bigger, you can think of buying a VPS, or opt for dedicated hosting, or even setting up your own infrastructure.

Branding and Advertising to Attract Global Customers:
The beauty of a web site hosting business is that your business is not limited to geographical bounds, and you can attract customers from different parts of the world. All that you need to do is to create a good rapport in the market, get some positive feedback from existing customers in form of testimonials.
Using the power of search engine optimization, or advertising programs like Google AdWords, you can easily rank well in search engines for keyword phrases related to your niche such as "web site hosting", "small business web hosting", "best web hosting provider", and get lot of customers.
Remember, you must create a professional-looking website to wow the customers, if you really want to become a successful web hosting provider.

Billing Software, Payment Gateway & Support System:
To manage your customer-base, good billing software is a must-have, and you can easily integrate online payment gateways seamlessly to be able to accept various forms of payments such as PayPal, Credit/Debit Card payment, bank-wire transfer.
The popular billing software includes WHMCS, Whmautopilot, Clientexec, Accounts lab pro, Modernbill, and the likes of them.
It's noteworthy that most of the reseller web hosting providers offer free automated billing software as a part of their services.

Support Software:
Apart from automated billing software, you'd also require a software system such as Perldesk, Cereberus, Deskpro, or Kayako Esupport to facilitate a 24x7 support ticket system for your customers.

Tips:
One of the important things to remember is that a web site hosting business isn't a part time affair, and it requires full time attention, as well as lot of patience.

You must always ensure that you don't lose your rapport in the market by giving poor customer service, or disappointing your customers in terms of hosting services. Far worse, you must never run out of disk space or bandwidth with a cheap reseller account, as it'd definitely hamper your rapport very badly.

What You Need:
Reseller/VPS/Dedicated Hosting
A Good Website
Automated Billing Software
Automated Support Software
Payment Gateway & Integration.

Webmasters / Fraudulent Hosting Firms & Individuals Exposed! by SpringWebHost: 10:24am On Oct 10, 2013
Hi NLs,

The intent of this thread is not to ridicle any individual or firms but to expose the sharp practices of some fraudulent individuals with the view to sanitizing our Website Hosting industry.

Every now and then I read of persons who are genuinely seeking a Nigerian hosting firm but because of the activities of some dubious persons, those wanting to do hosting with Nigerian firms are referred abroad. We can't grow like this in the area of website hosting and development. It's a multi billion naira industry!

I feel quite inadequate even though I know I've paid my dues in learning how to host a website effectively and also provide support, hence we established http://SpringWebHost.com. I also know quite a number of other individuals who have done so as well to start world class hosting services here in Nigeria. But our efforts are being truncated by a few individuals whom I know will soon fizzle out of the system.

I know you've had your fair share of an unwholesome Nigerian host, please do share your experience with us.

Thank you.

These give-away sites are boring so I'll advice you to built a cool website with a manual checkout and whenever you can afford it, get WHMCS.
