Health / What is important in a Semen analysis by stjudeclinic: 11:42am On Jun 09, 2016
Many patients i see for the first time have had their initial fertility treatment decisions based on a semen analysis done at a regular medical reference lab. That's the same place that does your blood count, cholesterol and all the other medical tests that your general doctor orders. Their semen analysis consists of a check of semen volume, sperm concentration (count), motility (movement) and standard (WHO) morphology (an estimate of those normally shaped).

When reproductive labs do a semen analysis we do a more detailed examination of motility than reference labs generally do and, more importantly, look at strict (Kruger) morphology. Strict morphology applies rigid criteria to call an immobilized, stained sperm perfectly normal. Normal values for strict morphology are in the 12-14% range while most reference labs use up to 80% as "normal." The difference is very important because we think that only perfectly shaped sperm are capable of fertilizing an egg.

The importance of performing a strict morphology in a semen analysis was emphasized in an article in the September 2010 issue of Fertility & Sterility. They contend that abnormal morphology by Kruger's strict criteria cannot be predicted reliably by the presence of other abnormal parameters on semen analysis. So even a normal count and motility along with a normal standard morphology does not assure that morphology by strict criteria will be normal. Many couples are lulled into a false sense of security and base their early treatment on the assumption that the male's morphology is normal, only to find that there are significant issues with his strict morphology when they finally come to have the semen analysis done at a reproductive lab. We see this scenario frequently.

I agree with this article's conclusion that assessment of Kruger morphology is a "necessary component of a complete semen analysis in the workup of the infertile couple." To this end we offer you the opportunity of sending patients to our lab for a truly complete semen analysis so that they have a better chance of getting the proper treatment earlier in their fertility journey.

We are located at No 26 1st Avenue, after NNPC service station, Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja.

Health / Health Benefit Of Pumpkin Seeds by stjudeclinic: 2:02pm On Feb 01, 2016
Pumpkin Seeds
Subtly sweet and nutty with a malleable, chewy texture, the roasted seeds from inside your Halloween pumpkin are one of the most nutritious and flavorful seeds around. While pumpkin seeds are available year round, they are the freshest in the fall when pumpkins are in season.

Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are flat, dark green seeds. Some are encased in a yellow-white husk, although some varieties of pumpkins produce seeds without shells. Like cantaloupe, cucumber, and squash, pumpkins and pumpkin seeds belong to the gourd or Cucurbitaceae family.

Health Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds

Prostate Protection

They promote overall prostate health and alleviate the difficult urination associated with an enlarged prostate.

Improved Bladder Function
In some studies, pumpkin seed extracts improved bladder function in animals.

Health / Vaginal Douching: Helpful Or Harmful by stjudeclinic: 1:13pm On Oct 23, 2015
The word "douche" is French for "wash" or "soak". It is a method to wash out the vagina usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. Douches that are sold in drugstores and supermarkets contain antiseptics and fragrances. A douch comes in a bottle or bag and is sprayed through a tube upward into the vagina.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DOUCHING
Some women say douching makes them feel cleaner. There is though, very little scientific evidence of benefit from douching. The rare positive research that does exist often has a downside. One study found that douching during the six months before pregnancy reduced the risk of preterm delivery. However in that same study, douching during pregnancy was linked to an increased risk of preterm birth.
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF DOUCHING
Overall, the risk of douching outweigh the benefits. Here are just a few of the problems linked to douching.
1.Vaginal Infection (Bacterial vaginosis)
2.Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
3.Pregnancy complications
4.Cervical cancer
SHOULD A WOMAN DOUCHE
According to health experts, including those at the American College of Obstetricians and gynecologists (ACOG) you should avoid douching. Having some vaginal odor is normal. However if you notice a very strong odor, it could be a sign of infection. The acidity of the vagina will naturally control bacteria, and simply washing the vagina with warm water and mild soap is enough to keep it clean.

Health / Cervical Screening Test by stjudeclinic: 2:49pm On Oct 20, 2015
Women are routinely invited to have cervical screening tests (also called smear test). The tests are done to prevent cervical cancer not to diagnose cancer. Early changes can be detected in the neck of the womb(cervix) which indicate that cancer may develop. Since screening started, the numbers of cases of cervical cancer have dramatically dropped and so have the number of women dying from it.
Cervical screening test is not a cancer test. The test is used to detect early abnormalities of the cervix which if untreated could lead to cervical cancer in future.
NOTE; You are very unlikely to develop cervical cancer if you have regular cervical screening tests at the times advised by your doctor.
At St Jude Fertility / Women's clinic, we offer a range of services within women's health as well as screening tests like cervical screening test and also semen analysis for men. We are located at No 26 1st Avenue, after NNPC Filling station, Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja. For more information, Call; 092906668, 08101153302, 08174367873
Health / Why Screening Tests Are Important by stjudeclinic: 12:44pm On Oct 17, 2015
Remember that old saying ''An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'' Getting checked early can help you stop diseases like cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and more in the very beginning when they are easier to treat. Screening tests can spot illness even before you have symptoms. The screening tests you need depends on your age, family history, your own health history and other risk factors.
Routine gynecological examination is the key to a better women's health. Health / 4 Ways To Boost Male Fertility by stjudeclinic: 10:37am On Jul 24, 2015
1. Go on gym dates;
Working out together with your woman is a great first step. Regular exercise decreases fat and increases lean muscle, leading to less estrogen and more testosterone and better sperm production.

2. Keep things loose;
Too snug running tights, bike shorts or boxers may increase heat around his testicles which is bad for sperm production.

3. Skip the hot tub;
Yes, its great for sore muscles. But research shows that ultrahot water, stunts the production of sperm.

4: Check your supplements;
Make sure you are not taking any testosterone supplements or prohormones to gain muscle. "Testosterone that comes from outside the body is bad for sperm.

Health / Ovulation And Ovulation Induction! by stjudeclinic: 3:00pm On Jun 29, 2015
Hello people ! Lets have a little review on this trying to conceive issues .
Many women on the TTC journey ,who get their normal periods DO NOT actually ovulate! This might be confusing,right? Nevertheless, something can be done about it,thats the goodnews!

Ovulation induction is the stimulation of ovulation by medication. It is the stimulation of the development of ovarian follicles to reverse anovulation or oligoovulation, but can also be seen as triggering oocyte release from relatively mature ovarian follicles. In any case, ovarian stimulation (in the sense of stimulating the development of oocytes) is often used in conjunction with ("strict"wink ovulation induction.

How does one know if they actually " ovulated" in a cycle,especially when ttc?

Health / Juice Therapy by stjudeclinic: 2:31pm On Jun 29, 2015
Juice therapy is a method of detoxifying and cleansing the body of unwanted chemicals, waste and toxins and supplying beneficial nutrients needed to fight diseases. Fresh juices provide unusually high quantities and concentrations of food's life force.
Here is a recipe that may be beneficial for baby making after detoxification.
2 carrot sticks (average size)
2 celery sticks (average size)
1/4 raw beetroot (average size)
1/4 apple (preferably peeled, red variety)
Options: Add small amounts of broccoli, Brussels sprout, cabbage, wheat grass, ginger or a pinch of parsley.
Blend together in a vegetable juicing machine and dilute the remaining juice with 50% water (half and half) to make approximately 250ml of juice that can be served daily. Do not store for long periods of time as vital enzymes can be lost via oxidation. It is best to make and drink as you go.

Health / When To Consult A Fertility Expert When TTC!!! by stjudeclinic: 12:52pm On Jun 25, 2015
Have you been trying to get pregnant ?– when do you need to see a fertility doctor?

This question is asked by almost every woman in the TTC journey. Here are your answers!

-If you're younger than 35 and haven't become pregnant after one year of unprotected sex, it's time to consult a fertility doctor.
-If you're age 35 or older, it's best to see a specialist after about six months of trying to conceive.

Certain conditions can also affect fertility, so it may make sense to get treatment before spending a full six months or a year trying to get pregnant naturally. You may need to pay a visit to a fertility clinic if you have a history of:

Pelvic inflammatory disease
Fibroids
Endometriosis
Polycystic ovary syndrome
Sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia or gonorrhea
Blocked fallopian tubes from an infection, ectopic pregnancy, or previous surgery
Previous pelvic or abdominal surgery
Chronic illness such as diabetes, cancer, or thyroid disease
Even if you've never been diagnosed with a specific medical condition, certain symptoms or physical characteristics can indicate a problem that could affect your fertility. Talk to your doctor if you have trouble getting pregnant along with any of the following signs:

Periods that are absent, irregular, painful, prolonged, or very heavy
Daily pelvic pain
Scalp hair loss
Severe acne
Excessive facial and body hair
Keep in mind that smoking, drinking alcohol, having more than 300 mg of caffeine daily , or being significantly overweight or underweight can also negatively impact fertility and pregnancy.

Managing Infertility Stress;
Understand why it’s important to set realistic goals and develop an awareness of stressors and stress. This is very important when on the TTC journey because believe me,there are a lot of issues out there to "attack" your emotional and psychological stability!. Lets take a look at these:

The Emotional Aspects of Infertility
One of the most challenging aspects of the infertility experience is dealing with the emotional ups and downs relating to medical treatment, the uncertainty about outcomes, and the challenge of having to make important decisions such as when “enough is enough.” It is important to learn how to take care of yourself, make sure that you get the support you need, and to manage your emotions so that your self-esteem and outlook on life remains as positive as possible.

Coping with the Holidays
Holidays can be stressful, even in the best of circumstances. Expectations are at a peak. Pressure comes, both from the outside and within, to break out of the normal routine—to celebrate, and to enjoy. But for the person experiencing infertility, holidays can be the most difficult time of the year.

Meditation & Relaxation Techniques
While stress does not cause infertility, infertility most definitely causes stress. Women battling with infertility report higher levels of stress and anxiety than women who are not, and are more likely to become depressed. This is not surprising since the far-reaching effects of infertility can interfere with work, family, finances and sex. Finding ways to reduce stress, tension and anxiety can make you feel better.

When to Seek Help
It may be hard to know when emotional responses to the pain and frustration of infertility are within normal ranges or are excessive and problematic. Learn about the warning signs and when to seek help.

We are always here @St Jude Women's Clinic to help!
A team of fertility experts awaits you to listen to your frustrations and help you move up,above the stressors!
