Nairaland / General / EBOLA NEWS Update Versus School Resumption Date?? by STOIC123: 4:49pm On Sep 11, 2014
I am writing to advice the Minister of Education and his counterpart the Hon minister of health to reconsider the decision to hastily call for school resumption across the nation before it is too late.
While my guess that these Honorable Nigerians may not have wards in Nursery/Primary/secondary schools, they should be made to sign should any thing go wrong with this step?
Are they willing to stake their career/Life for that decision?

While that conversation was going on,I sense movement in my back pocket, another guy behind me was carefully dipping his hand to my back pocket,I turned round and held him only to discover an object that feels like locally made gun inside his bag!
I did a very strong Open eye to destabilize them and I quietly but smartly left the scene!
I shared this with friends and neighbors only to discover that most people have lost wallets, phones and other valuable to these pick pockets conduit in that axis.

Nairaland / General / N500bn Missing From Sure-p Account, Says Senate Chair by STOIC123: 9:05am On Nov 06, 2013
The Senate Special Ad hoc Committee on the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (Sure-P), chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, yesterday disclosed that the sum of N500 billion out of the N800 billion that the programme got since inception is unaccounted for.

However, the committee’s attempt to hold a hearing with the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido, failed to hold as both didn't appear nor did they send representatives.

The senators, nonetheless, vowed to get to the root of the issue and proceeded to address the press at 3.30 pm when they didn't see anybody.

A member of the committee, Senator Kabir Marafa (APC/Zamfara Central), said when Sure-P was inaugurated, it was to receive N32 for each litre of petrol consumed in Nigeria.

“We requested clarification from the NNPC on the quantity of fuel that has been imported from the time the programme started and when it started, and NNPC replied our committee that it started in January 2012 to September 2013. That will give you about 21 months.

“They also gave us a breakdown of the quantity per month, and when you compute it, it comes to roughly 25 billion litres consumed in this 21 months. So when you multiply 25 billion litres by N32 we will get about N800 billion.

“But the Sure-P team told us when they got here that they have so far collected about N300 billion at N15 billion flat rate per month.

“Therefore the amount involved is N500 billion missing. That is what we wanted NNPC to tell us because they are the ones importing this fuel,” he said.

The inability of the heads of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and CBN to appear without any formal excuse irked the committee members as each took time to lambast both Alison-Madueke and Sanusi.

Senator Ningi said the non-appearance of the duo despite the letters of invitation sent since October 31 showed there was lack of transparency in the way the Sure-P fund is being handled.
He added that the hearing became possible due to the dissatisfaction Nigerians have with the programme and that the non-appearance of the minister and CBN governor showed that the programme was being undermined from the inside in an undemocratic way.
According to him, the snubbing of the committee smacked of crass impunity and disregard for constituted authority by agents of the presidency.

“What this tells me is that the Sure-P which is a cardinal programme of this government is being undermined from the inside. I have no doubt in my mind that the non-appearance further confirms the reservation of Nigerians of the secrecy in the implementation of the SURE programme.

“Part of the mandate of this committee is the unbundling and opening up of the programme so that Nigerians can know how the programme is being managed.
“But today, we are once again confronted by the anti-democratic forces; people who, unfortunately, fail to understand what the system provides for the legislative, judiciary and the executive to each do its work.

“A minister doesn't make a ministry. When we send an invitation, if the minister can't come, there is the permanent secretary or a director that can come. It is when the permanent secretary is unable to answer our questions that we will compel the minister to appear. That is what makes democracy different from military rule.

“We have sat here glued to our seats for one-and-a-half hours waiting for the arrival of officials of both the ministry and CBN. We have letters that we have sent to them but they have refused to turn up,” he said.

He then went on to say that the committee was gathering evidence on the implementation of Sure-P and if they are not satisfied with the programme they would end it.

“The National Assembly cannot continue giving legitimacy through appropriation of our common inheritance when the few individuals who run it cannot come to give an account on how the monies that accrue to the programme is being utilized,” he said.

However, when the committee members were about to leave the senate hearing room, a delegation from the CBN, comprising three deputy directors came in, but were told to go back and wait for another invitation from the committee.

The issue is you are driving a private car on a federal road, some thugs blocks the road with long wood laden with nails! They demand for radio and TV permit, emblem and so on.You innocently pay them 20000k only for you to get to the other side of the bridge another set of thugs held you claiming that you need to pay another 30000 for you to obtain the complete paper!
I appreciate your comments but trust me this thing is better imagined than experienced. They are thieves! They rob innocent Nigerians on that road in the name of LG activities .The state government should say/do something about this menace.Imagine the trauma!
Assuming you travelling with your family and this happens do you know what the kids will go through? Those guys are mean,Violent !
Edo state government should pls do something urgently.

Nairaland / General / 12 Amazing Facts About Nigeria by STOIC123: 3:31pm On Oct 30, 2013
Some years ago, a brilliant lecturer of mine (now late) said something about Nigeria that I waved aside as an exaggerated expression of patriotism. He told my class then that he had travelled to many places in the world and had finally come to the conclusion that Nigeria is the most blessed nation on the planet. I knew Nigeria was blessed but I couldn’t understand how he could boldly claim that top position for Nigeria: yes we have oil, gas, landmass–in fact, abundant natural and human resources, but was that enough?
Fast-forward to September, 2011. By this time, my doubt had given rise to a burning desire to know the specific things that make us great as a nation–that make us the most blessed people on earth. I felt if I did find these specific facts, they would need to be shared with Nigerians and the world in spectacular ways. To achieve this aim, I discussed the idea with my friend, George Okewih, and our subsequent brainstorming led to the birth of The Green Heritage page on Facebook to promote our cultural and natural heritage to Nigerians and the world. It’s been eighteen months of rigorous research since, and now I am convinced that my late lecturer was right.
Here are some facts from our common heritage that should make you proud to be called a Nigerian:
1. Nigeria is home to seven percent (7%) of the total languages spoken on earth. Taraba state alone has more languages than 30 African countries. The importance of this fact is appreciated when one understands that language is the “soul of culture” (as Ngugi wa Thiongo famously said). It is language that births the proverbs, riddles, stories and other aspects of culture that give us identity. UNESCO puts forward that the world’s languages represents an extraordinary wealth of creativity. Linguistic diversity correlates with cultural diversity. This means Nigeria can look inwards and drive itself to become the greatest hub for cultural tourism on earth, and consequently empower its citizens tremendously in the process.
2. The Walls of Benin (800-1400AD), in present day Edo State, are the longest ancient earthworks in the world, and probably the largest man-made structure on earth. They enclose 6500 square kilometers of community lands that connected about 500 communities. At over 16000km long, it was thought to be twice the length of the Great Wall of China, until it was announced in 2012 (after five years of meticulous measurement by Chinese surveyors) that the Great Wall is about 21,000km long.
3. The Yoruba tribe has the highest rate of twin births in the world. Igbo-Ora, a little town in Oyo state, has been nicknamed Twin capital of the World because of its unusually high rate of twins that is put as high as 158 twins per 1000 births. In a video I watched last year on YouTube presented by Titi (a white lady who speaks Yoruba), and which was centred on twin births in Igbo-Ora, one of the locals boasted that every family in the town has at least one twin!
4. Sarki Muhammad Kanta The Great of Kebbi, was the only ruler who resisted control by Songhai, West Africa’s greatest empire at that time. He founded and ruled the Hausa city-state of Kebbi around 1600 A.D and built Surame its capital, a planned city which was almost impossible to penetrate during war. In fact UNESCO describes Surame as “one of the wonders of human history, creativity and ingenuity”, and probably the most massive stone-walled constructions in West Africa. He is listed in Robin Walker’s 50 Greatest Africans.
5. Africa’s oldest known boat is The Dufuna canoe which was discovered in Dufuna village, Yobe state, by a Fulani Herdsman in May 1987, while he dug a well. Various radio-carbon tests conducted in laboratories of reputable universities in Europe and America indicate that the canoe is over 8,000 years old, thus making it the oldest in Africa and 3rd oldest in the world. The discovery of the canoe has completely changed accepted theories of the history and sophistication of marine technology in Africa.
6. Sungbo’s Eredo, a 160 km rampart equipped with guard houses and moats, is reputed to be the largest single pre-colonial monument (or ancient fortification if you like) in Africa. It is located in present-day Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State and when it was built a millennium ago, it required more earth to be moved during construction than that used for building the Great Pyramid of Giza (one of the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World). The most astonishing thing is that Sungbo’s Eredo was the biggest city in the world (bigger than Rome and Cairo) during the Middle Ages when it was built!
7. Sarki Abdullah Burja of Kano (ruled 1438-1452 AD), the 18th ruler of Ancient Kano, created the first Golden Age in Northern Nigeria and ushered in a period of great prosperity. During his reign, Hausa became the biggest indigenous language spoken in Africa after Swahili. He is on the list of 50
Greatest Africans in Robin Walker’s wonderful book, “When We Ruled”.
8. The Jos Plateau Indigobird, a small reddish-brown bird, is found nowhere else on the planet but Plateau state, Nigeria.
9. The Anambra waxbill, a small bird of many beautiful colours, is found only in Southern Nigeria and nowhere else on earth.
10. The Niger Delta (which is the second largest delta on the planet), has the highest concentration of monotypic fish families in the world, and is
also home to sixty percent of Nigeria’s mangrove forests. You should know too that Nigeria’s mangrove forests are the largest in Africa and third largest on earth.
11. According to the World Resources Institute, Nigeria is home to 4,715 different types of plant species, and over 550 species of breeding birds and mammals, making it one of the most ecologically vibrant places of the planet.
12. Ile-Ife, in present day Osun State, was paved as early as 1000AD, with decorations that originated from Ancient America suggesting there might have been contact between the Yorubas and the Ancient Americans half a millenium before Columbus ‘discovered’ America.

That same vehicle is now better described as a coffin. I Remember as a kid, my whole street gathered to watch a truck deliver a very large satellite dish to my neighbor's house. Today a dish one tenth that size delivers 5 times the value and is in almost every student's room. What about the Volkswagen Santana, Mercedes Benz V boot, 505 Evolution, Toyota Crown, all overtaken by latest models of Camry, Honda, Bugatti, Bentley, X6, Acura and Infinity.... Vanity! Some ladies left their true loves cos some rich guy then persuaded them with a Benz 190, which turned out 2 be the only car they ever owned till date. They found out too late that true love is invaluable. A friend declared drinks because he launched the Nokia Communicator for over hundred grand in 2002. Today that phone would embarrass the owner and is a joke compared to the low cost and everyday phone. What about d MTN sim card dat many people went extra miles b4 dey bought for over 30k, today u will not buy it at N100 because all networks are begging people to even take it for free. Blackberry was like a do or die affair, now Blackberry messenger is on tecno...People are still making the most horrific sacrifices over 'vanity' and make enemies over worthless material things.
