Politics / 15 Injured As LAUTECH Students Nab Alleged Rapist by Sunsamthy(m): 9:56am On Sep 09, 2014
No fewer than 15 students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology escaped death by a whisker after an accident involving them and an alleged rapist.

It was gathered that the accident happened when the students were taking the suspect to the police station.

One of the students, Fawole Isreal, told our correspondent that the suspect caused the accident by struggling with the students in the bus.

He said, “On Saturday, there was uproar in the Adenike area of the campus after a notorious armed robber and suspected rapist was caught while breaking into a particular students’ hostel.

“After the union leaders arrived at the scene, they said he should be taken to the police station. On the way, he struggled with them in the bus and that resulted in an accident. The bus tumbled about five times. The students got different degrees of injuries.”

It was learnt that other LAUTECH students got angry when they heard that their colleagues were involved in an accident triggered by the suspect.

To register their displeasure, they protested and paraded the alleged criminal at the Soun of Ogbomoso’s palace, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi.

The protest was led by the LAUTECH Students’ Union President, Areo Ajibola, and another student, Bolarinwa Sheriffdeen.

Ajibola said the protest was to register the grievances of students against the frequent criminal activities in the university.

He said, “With the intervention of our respected school authorities, the aggrieved students and sympathisers were calmed, but they refused to hand over the man to the police. We ensured that the suspect was taken to the Soun’s palace. On getting to Iyana Owode, a police barricade obstructed and redirected our initial destination to Owode Ogbomoso Police Station. The police assured us that justice would be done.”

A top management staff in LAUTECH confirmed the incident, saying “everything is now under control.”

Health / Intelligence-killing Foods You Must Avoid by Sunsamthy(m): 11:27am On Sep 08, 2014
Some foods are known to have a devastating effect on your brain functioning, and nutritionists advise us to consume them moderately in order to limit their negative impact. Here are the top 11 foods that kill your intelligence, slowly but surely:

Sugary products: Sugar and sugary products are bad not only for your waistline, but for your brain function as well. Long-term consumption of sugar can create a wealth of neurological problems, and it can also interfere with your memory.

On the other hand, sugar can also interfere with your ability to learn, this is why it is recommended to avoid pre-baked goods, sugar, corn syrup and products that are high in fructose.

Alcohol: Alcohol is known to harm your liver in the long run, and it also causes what is known as “brain fog” – which refers to a feeling of mental confusion and acts like a cloud that impacts your ability to think clearly, as well as your memory. High alcohol intake impacts the balance of the brain.

Junk food: A recent study that was performed at the University of Montreal has revealed that junk food can change the chemicals in the brains, thus leading to symptoms associated with depression and anxiety. Besides, foods that are high in fat can also trigger some symptoms that are similar to the signs of withdrawal when you stop consuming them. These foods affect the production of dopamine, an important chemical that promotes happiness and an overall feeling of well-being.

Moreover, dopamine also supports the cognitive function, the learning capacity, alertness, motivation and memory. This is why it is important to avoid all foods that contain excessive fat.

Fried foods: Almost all processed foods contain chemicals, dyes, additives, artificial flavours, preservatives and such – these can affect the behaviour and the cognitive functioning due to the chemical that causes hyperactivity, both in children and in adults. Fried or processed foods slowly destroy the nerve cells located in the brain. However, some oils are more dangerous than others – sunflower oil is considered to be among the most toxic ones.
Politics / Soldiers Battle Insurgents To Regain Mubi, Others by Sunsamthy(m): 11:14am On Sep 08, 2014
Nigerian soldiers are turning back fleeing residents of Mubi in Adamawa State as they engage Boko Haram insurgents in an attempt to regain the town.

The soldiers are also said to be engaging in a fierce battle with members of the sect all through Sunday night and Monday morning to regain full control of Michika.

Fighter jets are bombing the hideouts of the insurgents while foot soldiers battle their locations around Michika local government area secretariat.

Executive Director of Stefanos, Mr. Mark Lipdo, quoting military sources in the battle field, said that the military are turning back Nigerians running out of Mubi in reaction to the news of insurgents approaching Mubi town.

A curfew is now in place to enable the military restore order as reports say that the military are gaining ground over the insurgents.
Business / NANS Condemns N65 ATM Charge, Seeks Reversal by Sunsamthy(m): 10:12am On Sep 08, 2014
The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the re-introduction of the Automatic Teller Machine charge by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CBN had announced a charge of N65 to be paid by bank customers when they use the ATMs of third party banks.

A charge of N100 for ATM withdrawals was scrapped by the former CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi, to reduce human traffic in banking halls.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of NANS, South-West, Jeremiah Olatinwo, the association called the reintroduction of the charge “satanic extortion”, saying it negated the promise to empower Nigerians.

The statement read in part, “The bourgeois Nigerian government has opened another episode of unlawful extortion of the proletariat, an act which is motivated by selfish and personal gains.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students wishes to express its displeasure with the recent unfriendly policies of the apex financial institution.

“We want to unequivocally state our opposition to the baseless charge of N65 on interbank ATM withdrawals, which took effect on September 1 after two years’ proscription”.

The association demanded the reversal of the charge, adding that it would to mobilise students against the move if nothing was done.

“We demand the immediate stoppage of the N65 charge for interbank ATM withdrawals. We like to state here that failure to adhere to or give positive response to our demand shall result in affirmative action by Nigerian students,” NANS said.

Politics / Bomb Scare Causes Panic In Jos by Sunsamthy(m): 5:57pm On Sep 05, 2014
There was pandemonium at Dogon Karfe area of Jos North local government area of Plateau State when a car reportedly laden with bomb was discovered in the area as the Muslims were preparing for their Friday prayers.

The Muslim observe their Friday prayers at the Dogon Karfe praying ground.

Our correspondent gathered that the 505 Peugeot car, was left along the busy road for a long time.

The panic led to heavy traffic jam along the Murtala Mohammed Way, Constitution Hill road and other adjoining roads as motorists tried to avoid the Dogon Karfe axis to link British Junction, Bauchi road and Angwan Rukuba. There was also heavy traffic along the ever busy Ahmadu Bello Way and Yakubu Gowon Way.

Though the police denied that it was a bomb, an eyewitness said that men of the bomb disposal unit of the state’s Police Command later detonated the bomb before it exploded.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Emmanuel Abuh, however told our correspondent that the attention of the police was drawn to the car and when it was searched, it was found to contain personal effects.

He said, “An alarm was raised by residents of Dogon Karfe area of Jos North that a particular car had been packed at a spot for a long time. We contacted the bomb disposal unit and when they got there, they searched inside the car and discovered that it contained items of clothing and other personal effects.

“But we are investigating the owner and why it was packed there for such a long time.”
Family / Want To Live Long? Get Some Rest This Weekend by Sunsamthy(m): 5:44pm On Sep 05, 2014
Everybody looks forward to the weekend for many reasons. For adults, the excitement could stem from the fact that they have ample time to sleep in on Saturday morning or simply because there is no deadline. For children, it is the time they have to catch up with other kids in the neighbourhood and run around without any care in the world.

Saturdays and Sundays are one of the most cherished days of the week because then, you are free from the hustle and bustle of the week. Interestingly, they are the days that most people engage in unhealthy habits the most.

In fact, for some peopel, it is the time for them to engage in excessive drinking and partying. Others just sit at the television, watching soap operas for hours while snacking on fried, fatty foods; while many more have loaded theirs with social activities.

Healthy living experts say that not giving the body the rest that it deserves during the weekend increases stress levels, weakens the body’s immunity levels and predisposes one to sicknesses and diseases.

Family physician, Dr. Adeola Mohammed, notes that the weekends are the days that one should use to manage stress and also help the body to get back in shape and form.

According to him, the body needs at least 72 hours of long rest to rejuvenate and also produce some vital cells.

Mohammed says, “There are a thousand metabolic processes in the body functioning at an accelerated pace when you are working, thinking and generally when you are busy. Adrenaline production is also highest when you are up and doing. You need to slow your pace on your days off to allow the body function normally again.

“Your body cannot be on alert all week; that is why you need to basically rest and relax in the true sense of the word when you are free. The body needs eight hours of sleep and five hours of relaxation each day, but how many people have that opportunity with their work schedule?

“When you fill your weekends with too many activities, you feel tired and stressed out on Monday. You won’t be able to give your best because you did not rest mentally and physically. “You need to sleep as much as you can during the weekends to boost your memory during the week.”

Sleep also affects quality of life. Several studies support the doctor’s position on the need to rest. A 2010 study of women ages 50 to 79 in the United Kingdom shows that more deaths occurred in women who got less than five hours or more than those who had eight hours of sleep each night.

Getting preoccupied with activities that add nothing to the quality of one’s life all through Saturday and Sunday will only increase one’s stress levels and increase one’s risk of many diseases, including stroke, high blood pressure and some neurological disorders.

You can add these activities to your plans this weekend. They would help you feel better and live longer!

Go for long walks

It is tempting to spend Sunday sitting on the couch, watching football or catching up on your favourite TV shows. Instead, take a long walk alone or with your kids. Take advantage of the fact that you have free time and go for a hike, bike ride or swim. Use the day off for some calorie-burning activities that you can’t squeeze in mid week.

Go to bed early

Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood or banishing under-eye circles. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.

Not sleeping well is like parking a car in a garage and picking it up in the morning without checking the garage. Sleep deprivation often makes you eat more — about 500 extra calories a day — studies have found.

Maximise your weekend by unwinding and getting ready for bed early. Instead of splurging on a late-night food that you will regret, why don’t you head to bed early to squeeze in some extra sleep?
Politics / Are We Seriously Begging Jonathan To Run? by Sunsamthy(m): 5:34pm On Sep 05, 2014
To be clear from the start, I have nothing against President Goodluck Jonathan or the tendency that he would take another shot at office in 2015. For me, it is within his right as a Nigerian to so aspire, at least for as long as no competent court of the land says otherwise.

I also think that current political dynamics in the country indicate that Jonathan is the candidate to beat when Nigerians file out for elections in February 2015, if he chooses to run. Now, concerning this last point, it seems so obvious that even a blockhead would realise that Jonathan desires another term. I believe the President and his men have given us enough signals, what politicians call “body language”, to assure us about his plans for 2015.

This is why I am unable to understand the endless parades and visitations calling on the President to run, endorsing him for a second term or collecting millions of signatures which compel a man who is in an apparent romance with the office that he has held for about four years to run again.

The current wave of activities in support of Jonathan’s vying for office in 2015 is at such a dizzying speed that one would have to pause every now and then to understand it. The confusion on the issue is on a number of fronts, some of which I will presently attempt to discuss in no particularly organised order.

Earlier this week, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, was quoted as saying that about 8,000 groups were currently rooting for the President to contest in 2015. Alkali went ahead to say: “Indeed, initially we printed 5,000 forms that were distributed to the NGOs and other support groups but the forms soon ran out and we had to print an additional 2,000. As I am speaking to you now, we have at least another one 1,000 groups demanding to be screened… we shall undertake content analysis of the reports with a view to properly positioning the various support groups for the challenges of the 2015 general elections…We want to assure every support group irrespective of its size, from two-man group to 20-million-man group that they are all important to us and we shall carry them along.”
Leaders of TAN would then approach the President after numerous condescending speeches would have been made by stalwarts of the ruling party. He would embark on an emotional genuflection, beg the President to accede to the request of these 10 million Nigerians who had vowed that their lives and that of their generations depend on another four years of Jonathan’s Presidency. And then the President would react in the opulence of his office, thank the “10 million Nigerians” for appreciating his transformation agenda and then insult our collective intelligence further with a promise to look at this request on its merit and get back to Nigerians at the right time. The hypocrites will applaud and everyone will go back home feeling accomplished.

But the ridicule of the situation is that the joke would be on those who think they are playing games with Nigerians. The pretence that the message from TAN and others does not have the stamp of the Presidency is as laughable as the suggestion that Jonathan needs some serious convincing to be part of the 2015 elections.

And it is an idea that supporters of the President should not have allowed to thrive. I think it goes to the root of the sincerity of the administration. And more than that, it raises questions about whether Nigerians desire a President whose choice to run is dependent on some sycophantic manipulation at this time of her history.
