Politics / Ban On Okada: Edo Youths Rush To Driving Schools by suzita(f): 8:26pm On Sep 01, 2013
Motorists and other road users in Benin City, the Edo State capital now ply the metropolis with fear following the increase of trainee drivers on the routes.

The development may not be unconnected with the ban of commercial motorcycle operators popularly known as “Okada” by the Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole in June 2013 as the state government attributed the upsurge to the use of motorcycles for criminal activities.

Some operators of driving schools in the state capital told our correspondent that they have recorded a boom in business since the ban on Okada riders came into effect, but remarked that the presence of the high number of vehicles on the roads had poised serious challenges for trainers and trainees as motorists have no patience for learners.

The managing director of Ivory Driving School, Mr Osarodion Francis, who said he has been in the business for over a decade, noted that they are inundated on daily with more clients who have continued to show interest in driving.

“Obviously, we are ensuring that every learner that passes through our driving school is equipped with the necessary driving skill and is knowledgeable on the road signs and regulations which to us is very fundamental. Our challenge is the attitude of other road users who in most cases are careless about those learning even when they see clear sign of learners boldly displaced on the vehicle.”

But for Omorodion Ojo, a taxi driver that plies the ever-busy Airport Road urged the state government to designate areas for trainee-drivers whom he said are responsible for some of the intra-city road accidents, adding that some of the driving schools must be certified to have the prerequisite know-how by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Head of operations of the Edo State Traffic Management Authority (EDSTMA), Amadi Owas, lamented the dangers posed by the trainees’ activities on major roads in the city, adding that more needs to be done by the FRSC and vehicle inspection officers (VIOs).

Politics / S-west Governors Consider Yoruba As Language Of Instruction by suzita(f): 4:49pm On Aug 30, 2013
Primary schools in the south-west geopolitical zone in the country may soon switch to the use of Yoruba language, their mother tongue, as the language of instruction.

The decision to consider the use of the language was part of the outcome of a meeting on Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) held by South-West Governors in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Thursday night.

Speaking on behalf of the Governors, Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi said a region-wide education summit would soon be hosted by Osun state, to look at a mechanism that would allow the region come up with a common curriculum for basic education.

The curriculum according to Fayemi would place emphasis on the use of Yoruba as a language of instruction in basic schools across the region.

It could be recalled that the National Policy on Education (1976) had recommended that the mother tongue of pupils should be the language of instruction at the elementary education level.

Fayemi had at a forum in Akure a few weeks ago held that researches have also proven that pupils can learn faster when taught in their first language.

Speaking further on the outcome of the meeting, the Governor said the region was planning an alternative economic framework that will make the knowledge economy which the region is known for, serve as bulwark against the emerging reduction in the resource-based economy that the country currently has.

“What happens to us? We are being futuristic here. What happens to us as western Nigeria and we are concerned about Nigeria as a country? What happens to us when oil no longer flows or when oil sells for one dollar? Where would the resources come from? How do we harness the energy of our people, their creativity and innovation as scholars?”, he said.

Other issues raised at the meeting are the exploration of sports as a unifying vehicle for development in the region and homeland security framework to forestall any security challenges.
