Saint Lucia (French: Sainte-Lucie) is a sovereign island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.


The island was formerly called Iyonola, the name was given to the island by the native Amerindians and later,Hewanorra the name given by the native Caribs.


Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238 square miles) and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. Its capital is Castries.


The island was ruled by the French and British seven (7) times each. The French were the first set of people to settle on the island.


From 1958 to 1962 the island was a member of the West Indies Federation.


On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Federal Government of Nigeria ordered the abrupt closure of tertiary institutions, secondary schools as well as primary schools in March to contain the spread of coronavirus.


Though there had been a two-week warning strike by lecturers under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from March 9 to March 23 before the general shut down of schools. ASUU is embarking on the strike over the non-payment of salaries of their members who failed to enrol into the federal government’s IPPIS, a payroll software mandated for all public officials.


ASUU passed a statement recently, stating that even if the FG declares a general reopening of schools, public universities would not resume until the union's demands are furnished.


On Tuesday, the National Universities Commission (NUC) said it is obtaining data from universities to examine their readiness for resumption of academic activities.


The commission also states that efforts are ongoing to resolve the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) that threatens to further delay the resumption of academic activities in the universities.


The Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed said this during a press conference on the contributions of Nigerian universities to the national response to COVID-19 in Abuja on Tuesday.


Mr Adamu, who was represented at the event by the deputy executive secretary Academics, Suleiman Yusuf, said the Commission is working with universities to discuss preparation that should be in place before reopening.


According to him, universities that are not under ASUU watch can go back to classes once they have put the necessary guidelines in place.


“We gave a template to vice-chancellors of all universities requesting them to suggest to us what kind of protocols and strategies they are putting in place in the various institutions. We are collecting some of the responses which have already started coming in and at the end of the day the picture should emerge about the extent to which our universities are prepared to reopen for academic activities,” he said.

The University of Lagos on Friday said that at least 25 ,000 candidates participated in the institution ’s Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination which ended on Friday.

An official in the admissions office of the university , who spoke anonymously , made disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos .

According to the official , over 60 , 000 candidates applied for admission into the institution for the 2019 /2020 academic session.

He noted that of the figure , over 35 ,000 obtained 200 marks and above at this year ’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board .


The official said that candidates who scored 200 and above were eligible to participate in the institution’s Post UTME
“ At least 9 ,000 candidates would be given placement into the university for the various undergraduate programmes .


“ For any candidate to be considered for admission in our institution , he or she must have scored 12 points ,’’ the official said.
NAN reports that the Post UTME carries a total of 30 marks .


“ The examination started on Monday, August 26 and so far , it has been hitch- free . The university acquired more computers and their back - ups, which have all been in top shape, while the tests lasted.

“ The electricity too was uninterrupted . We have not recorded any impersonation too, probably because of the measures put in place .

“ This year ’s examination has turned out to be one of the best we have ever recorded in recent times . JAMB made available to us images of the candidates coupled with the biometric machines used in authenticating them .

“ We must also give credit to the candidates because most of them now know how the system works , how to operate the computers, thereby taking the pressure off the examiners ,’’ the official told NAN .

UNILAG to hold post UTME test August 26–30



The University of Lagos has fixed August 1 -21, 2019 for application for its post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Matriculation Examination, post UTME, screening into all courses/programmes for the 2019/2020 academic year.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Registrar, Mr Oladejo Azeez, on Saturday.

According to the university, only candidates who made the institution their first choice in the 2019 UTME and scored 200 and above are eligible for screening upon payment of a screening fee of N2, 000.

Candidates who will not be 16 years old by October 31 are not eligible and need not apply.

“In the same vein, candidates who do not participate in the UTME screening will not be considered for placement,” it said.

According to the institution, the post UTME aptitude test will hold from August 26 to August 30.
It added that qualified candidates must possess five credits passes at one sitting in relevant ‘O’ Level subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

It also said that former students of the institution whose admissions were withdrawn for poor academic performance or absence could reapply on the condition that the new admission would be for a new programme/course.

The university added that any student expelled from the university would not be offered fresh admission.

It urged eligible candidates to log on to the university’s website, www.unilag.edu.ng, click on admission tab and follow the registration procedure.

“Candidates are to log in with their post UTME number as user name and the surname in lower cases, as password, and then continue with the procedure to generate their post UTME examination pass,” it said.

The university urged candidates to adhere strictly to the guidelines and obtain necessary clarifications.


It said that it had zero tolerance for drug abuse, warning that any student found wanting would lose his/her studentship.
