Literature / Seek Parental Blessings by Tekande(m): 5:05pm On Mar 11, 2016 |
"Mom, I am now a big boy. I should not be carrying a bowl of water on my head" He then moved closer to his grandmother sitting closely to them and asked her, " Grandma, what do you think.? Mom should understand that right?" The Grandma gave a feeble smile and said, "yes, yes ma son, mom should understand that you're now a big boy who should see more reason why you should not allow her do the ' much domestic chores' and that you as a male is not an exception at all" she continued after a little calm, "My dear son, if you carry a gallon of water on your head two people will see you. One of them will think you are so useless and treated bad. And you're not far from the person. But the second person will say, Oh! look at this big boy, a humbled boy. At his age he still help his mom? This is great, I admire his zeal." (sometimes I wonder the mind set of children of this generation, I wonder where their heart is, they're not or rather they care less of receiving parental blessings. They don't know the great blessing attached to when they aid their parents. I fear their future. Maybe, they all need Esau or Jacob to lecture them on that. Jacob who went extra miles to do all things just to have his father's blessings before Esau. You may define Jacob as a brother who took advantage of his brother to earn their father's blessing but come to think of it in my corner, parental blessings were what nobody wished to miss. They believed in it and it worked for them. Jacob envied this blessing though he didn't work to earn it but we could see a son who desired and knew the degree of effective parental blessings. I ask: Do we even have Jacobs today? We rarely have. If my answer is right then no need to ask of the Esau's.) The grandma continued, "Son, I want you to strive to receive blessings of your parent...when they demand something from you, do it with all zeal and with no iota of grudge" Before she finished, the boy took the gallon with his 'big boy dress' and he went to fetch water for his mom, he left the grandma with a smile. On his return from the Well, he met the corpse of his Grandma. ABOUT THE WRITER SULE T. Literature / "Ssce Freedom" by Tekande(m): 7:59am On Jun 12, 2015 |
A SHORT STORY Some years back while I was writing my SSCE, my mammy has this way of making you dedicated to reading in each of the exams you find yourself. I still remember her sayings, some weeks before my exams, 'Charity, Agnes I believed you're all aware that your brother Joshua will commence his exams soon enough? I am making a stand now that when he begins the exam, he is not permitted to wash the ditches, sweep the (sitting) rooms/vicinity, fetch water, iron clothes, cook food( I wasn't that good in any of the food thing), go errands, take care of the poultry..." All she was saying is that I should not do any time consuming work but I made it look like "Mommy says I should just be in my room. Eats a lot. Sleeps whenever due." Agnes did all the house chores during this period. She was such a workaholic. She begged for a second hand but I never gave her, like I wasn't having any of those hands to even wash pot. I wished someone could have fed me, open the bottle of cokes I was favoured to drink each weekends during the exams. Coke bottles were not seen after my exams. But for the freedom, I never revealed my exams were over for a good one week. It is a long years now. My sister is now writing her SSCE too. I'm coincidentally home for a school break. . . she hopes to give me more. . . because she will definitely get the 'SSCE freedom' By Sule T.B Joshua ( a.k.a Tekande) |
