Technology Market / Over 5 Million Airtel Nigeria Subscribers Cut Off The Network by Telcompare: 10:04am On Oct 12, 2011
Following a dispute between Airtel staff and the company, over five million Airtel Nigeria subscribers were without mobile phone coverage last week, reports Vanguard.

According to the newspaper,

“Airtel said some people claiming to be NLC members shut down 15 showrooms this week (last week) and attacked its switchboard in the capital, Abuja, cutting off 5 million customers from its network across the north of Africa’s most populous nation.”

You may recall that last week, Airtel Nigeria was accused of laying off thousands of its employees, which the company denied, saying the workers were employed by other companies it contracted.

In a statement issued by the company last Thursday, it said:

“Airtel did not sack any employee. The employees being referred to, work for Tech Mahindra and Spanco, who provide us Call Centre services. The employees in question were contracted through two employment agencies, namely HR Indexx and CCSNL, whose contracts with Tech Mahindra and Spanco expired on September 30, 2011.”

The company further noted that Spanco and Tech Mahindra were working on plans to recruit new employees, which would include some of the contracts that have recently expired.

Technology Market / Aero Launches Sms Application That Lets You Book Flights Via Sms by Telcompare: 10:00am On Oct 12, 2011
Aero, one of the pioneer electronic ticketing airlines in West Africa has launched an SMS application that enables its customers to make bookings-on-hold via SMS.

The SMS application which has been integrated into the aero ticket-sale booking engine, offers customers the opportunity to make bookings for flight tickets from any part of the country via SMS with their mobile phones.
How It Works

There are basically 3 steps for customers to purchase a ticket from their mobile phone and starts with sending two SMSes to a short code.

The SMS app allows you to look up for available flights by sending your departure and destination city, the date you want to fly to a short code 32120 in this format: Aero Lagos Abuja 20 October.

Then the system responds with a confirmation of the route, date, list of available flight connections and the price for a single adult ticket. You can then choose a flight from the list and text the row number of that flight, your first name and surname to short code 32120 in the format: Aero Row # [Firstname] [Surname].

The system books the flight and puts the reservation on hold and then responds with a confirmation text message listing your flight number, PNR (passenger name record or booking id), biller code, the reference number, and the final amount.

With this reference number, you can pay for the ticket at any bank or ATM machine in Nigeria or at www.quickteller.com (booking will be kept on hold for a maximum of 24 hours and a minimum of 18 hours from the time the booking is made).

Customers can only book on hold for a flight which is 24 hours away and above. On-hold bookings from the SMS app must be paid for at least 6 hours before departure. If payment is not received within that time period, the booking will automatically be cancelled. Once payment is received, you will be sent a payment confirmation message from Aero.

Check out this video that demonstrates how booking for flights via Aero’s SMS app works:

Aero leads West African aviation in e-airline, introducing various booking and payment options to make air travel convenient for customers.

With the introduction of this SMS Booking procedure, Aero has taken another giant stride towards consolidating its position as the leading regional carrier in Nigeria.

Technology Market / Ncc Extends Sim Registration Deadline by Telcompare: 2:25pm On Oct 04, 2011
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has extended the deadline for registration of telecommunications subscribers in the country to enable those who have not been registered to do so.

NCC, in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Reuben Muoka, added that the commission has also begun collation and harmonisation of registered Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards in the country, following the completion of the exercise, which second phase started six months ago, yesterday.

Mouka noted that the harmonisation will involve the collation, reconciliation, cleaning and consolidation of the captured data into a central data infrastructure for efficient management of Nigeria’s subscriber data base.

“Given the vast geographical spread of the country, and the logistics involved in the registration exercise over the past six months, there is need for proper harmonisation of the data in line with the specifications issued by the commission,” he said.
For subscribers, who were unable to register their SIM cards at the expiration of the deadline yesterday, Muoka said the commission has decided to extend the deadline.

He said an opportunity is now open for them to do so within the harmonisation period. He, however, did not state when tthis would end.

Technology Market / ‘No Isp Or Telco Offers ‘Real’ Broadband In Nigeria’ – Chima Onyekwere, Linkserv by Telcompare: 1:27pm On Sep 30, 2011
Do you use 3G or 4G broadband in Nigeria? No, I don’t mean 3G or 4G in telco and ISP ad campaigns. I’m talking about the real deal on your phone or PC. Just when you thought that the internet speed being advertised in Nigeria as broadband is real, the Chairman of a pioneer Internet Service Provider in Nigeria makes a shocking revelation: ‘We don’t have broadband in Nigeria’.

Linkserve‘s Chairman/CEO, Chima Onyekwere told BusinessDay in a recent interview that, “When we defined broadband four years ago, we said that broadband was anything from 128kbs. Today, we can not define broadband in that manner. Broadband is actually 4 megabits per second. Therefore, I can confidently say that no telcos or ISP is delivering 4 MEG to any consumer in the market.”
As far as we know, this is the first time that an industry leader such as Onyekwere is being truthful to Internet consumers in Nigeria amidst the stiff competition between ISPs and Telcos over whose data service is faster. What this means is that if you hear any ISP’s executive say: ‘We have 3G or 4G broadband‘, just tell them to shut up.

In a recent Mobile Monday event held in Lagos, Mobitel‘s COO, Tomi Davies said that there’s nothing like 3G, while explaining how his company’s 4G ‘broadband’ service is one to beat. But we’re wondering if 4G does exist, as it could just be another term to sway Internet consumers.
Thus, I can now define 256kbps which is commonly available today as a percentage of broadband. Basic broadband is actually 4 megabits per second. Even though the internet application on some dongle you can actually get 2MEG, the internet delivered to the consumer is usually between 64kbps to 128kbps.”

This is in spite of $2.24 billion (N336bn) investment spent in deploying underwater cables that are expected to lower bandwidth costs and improve availability. While it is unclear whether or not the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised the threshold of the broadband definition, we feel that the NCC should step in now and regulate the so-called broadband operators in Nigeria.
Technology Market / Etisalat: Fast Rising And Gaining Pace by Telcompare: 12:50pm On Sep 26, 2011
Etisalat has consistently demonstrated its core values of optimism, simplicity and caring to the Nigerian people as it offers them world-class telecommunication services. Little wonder why it is fast taking its place in the Nigerian telecoms market as it is fast growing and a major threat to its other counterparts which started over six years before it.

We could so far rate Etisalat as doing very well in the market owing to its various innovative packages, very cheap and affordable tariff plan and with its wide coverage and strong network around the nation.

Etisalat has been able to effectively offer data services to all their customers from launch through enabling Edge on all their cell sites throughout Nigeria and on the 1st of December 2010 it acquired its 3G licence and as been making immerse efforts at changing its Edge service to 3G as it is presently running both services side by side as a strategy for an hitch free transition to 3G permanently.

Looking at how far Etisalat has been able to achieve and cover in less than 3 years, with the quality of services it has been able to provide with its Edge service we could categorically state that this is just a tip of the ice berg in comparison to what its 3G service will offer and since they never run out of their innovative and interesting packages which has over the years earned the various awards like Best in Quality of GSM Service in Nigeria - 2009, Friendliest Tariff Mobile Operator award at the African Telecom Hall of Fame Award - 2010, Most Innovative Telecommunication Company – 2011, to mention but a few.

One thing that sets Etisalat apart from other networks is its creative and innovative skills which is evident in its value added services: the uniqueness of the Dot Me services, the great advantage of that the Mobile Zone offers and the consistency and reliability of its You & Me services all speaks for themselves. surely it is without doubt Etisalat is well on its way to being one of the best telecoms operators in Nigeria.

Technology Market / Glo Launches Blackberry@ Social & Complete by Telcompare: 9:05am On Sep 14, 2011
Pioneers of Blackberry services in Nigeria, Globacom, has again scored another first in the range with the formal launch of Blackberry Social and Blackberry Complete packages. The new plans are richer in offerings and are created for users of specific features.

The Complete Plan has BBM, BB Mail, Social Networking & IM Apps, Internet Browsing, Apps World and One E-mail id, while the Social Plan has BBM, BB Mail, Social Networking, and Internet Browsing & Apps World.

In a statement issued by the company in Lagos recently, the Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Jameel said that Globacom decided to launch the special packages so the network could accommodate the needs and convenience of lovers of the service who could not afford the cost of the full Blackberry bundle. ‘’We are aware of the immense popularity of Blackberry@ in Nigeria and the desire of many to avail of the service. This is why we have launched Blackberry Social and Blackberry Complete, to cater for that category of our subscribers’’, he said.

Jameel also said that the Glo offerings are indeed the real thing, noting that it is the full version and therefore the very first of the said bundle. ‘’What we have launched is indeed the very first of the packages, in full form. That is why we are elated; that we continue to design and deploy products and services that meet the demand and convenience of our subscribers’’.

Significantly, the Glo package comes with the best tariff in the market, compared to what obtained, hitherto. The N 75 charged for a full day benefit on the Blackberry social, is N25 less than the prevailing market rate. The monthly plan of N1, 200 is N300 less than what obtains, currently. In the Blackberry complete, the subsisting rates of between N1, 500 – N2, 000 has been crashed to N1, 400, while subscribers on the weekly plan will pay just N400, down from N600 offered by competition.

Globacom launched Blackberry in Nigeria in August 2008, the very first network to do so and with a reputation for reliability and cost effectiveness.

Technology Market / Etisalat Nigeria Has Launched An Innovative Service `dotme`, An Sms Based Notice by Telcompare: 12:27pm On Sep 12, 2011
Dotme enables Etisalat mobile phone subscribers to publish information on their mobile number via SMS while on the go.

Etisalat is the only network in Nigeria and in the world to launch such an innovative service. To use this service, a dotter simple sends a message or an update to the service code 8900. This can then be accessed on demand by his or her followers on any network anywhere in the world as long as he or she has the dotter`s Etisalat phone number.

For a start, the dotter invites his or her contacts to follow his or her post by asking them to text a dot that is a full stop(.) to his or her Etisalat mobile phone number to retrieve his or her status, and updates this status regularly and if you are a follower all you need to do is to send a dot to the Etisalat mobile number of your dotter. and you are able to receive the last post of the person you are following. For instance, sending dot(.) to 0809xxxxxxx would result in a response SMS with the last post of the dotter.

The Etisalat Dotme posts are also accessible to customers of other networks. It cost one naira for Etisalat customers to follow while the non Etisalat customer in Nigeria and the world can follow at the normal rates. The service is available for both prepaid and postpaid subscribers and does not require any subscription.
Technology Market / Globacom Launches Glo Flexi Dynamic Tariff by Telcompare: 12:39pm On Sep 09, 2011
Mohamed Jameel, Chief Operating Offi cer, Globacom Group, said at the launch that the new Glo Flexi plan offers the biggest discounts ever offered by any telecommunication network in the country, as subscribers can talk for as low as 1Kobo/ sec. “The new Glo Flexi is available to all prepaid subscribers across Nigeria and it offers the biggest discount ever offered by any telecom operator in the country.

With up to 99 per cent discounts offered to subscribers on calls, there is no doubt that Glo Flexi is the next big thing since we pioneered the Per Second Billing (PSB) platform so many years ago”, he said. Jameel said the introduction of Glo Flexi was in line with Globacom’s valuedriven approach to introducing new products and services which enable the company to give back to its subscribers.

Such initiatives, according to him, include the introduction of special tariffs such as the Glo1derful, Glo Infi nito and Glo Talk More tariffs which still remain tremendously popular among subscribers. Ashutosh Tiwary, General Manager, Prepaid Marketing, Globacom stated that Glo Flexi is a dynamic package that is dependent on the density of traffi c on the network at any point in time.

He stated that the system looks at the network usage behaviour and gives generous discounts making it possible for subscribers to enjoy discounts ranging from 0 per cent to 99 per cent, depending on the time of day and their geographical location.

In other words, subscribers are guaranteed the best network quality in Nigeria on the Glo network as the massive discount offers ensure proper utilization of network resources.
Technology Market / Is Your Prepaid Service Truly The Best by Telcompare: 12:34pm On Sep 09, 2011
Every individual is faced with the challenge of choosing the best pre paid package that meets not only their personal but also business needs, no doubt the various pre paid packages are exciting and intriguing with all their benefits and accessibility.
As such we decided to do a recap by striping most of these packages of their sweet talk and hype and analysing the integrities of these offers.

MTN PAYGO
Mtn paygo is a service plan designed to empower individuals to do so much with an array of benefits like free midnight calls, MTN call me back, share & sell, callertunez and affordable internet data bundle, with calls going for 50k/sec and 58k/sec for on net and off net calls, An ideal package for the young and fun loving.

Despite its appealing nature to the youths this package does fall short of requirements for the business minded as the call rates may be too high for longer minutes and quite frankly MIDNIGHT CALLS don’t work well for business negotiations.

ETISALAT EASYLIFE 2.0
Earlier in the year Etisalat launched the easylife pre paid package and subsequently Easylife2.0 was launched giving a sharper edge than its predecessor. The Easy life 2.0is a basic plan that gives you the cheapest rates on the Etisalat network. It comes with quite an attractive package of 20k/sec to call all networks in Nigeria and very cheap rate too for international calls with various bonuses too.

At a glance it is easy to conclude that this is the perfect plan we’ve all been waiting for but unfortunately, the N25 access daily charge just puts a ledge in its perfect wheel, leaving us to wonder if any network could actually give Nigerians that perfect package that everyone will abandon other lines for.

GLO INFINITO
Few months ago this package couldn’t have made this list because GLO INFINITO was available in specific states across the country but can now be enjoyed in any state and anywhere in Nigeria. It is new and very easy to enjoy with all its benefits. It offers one tariff to any network in Nigeria and it is cheap (25k/sec) with other benefits like free mid night calls and so on.

Judging from past experience of inconsistency, hidden charges and lack of integrity, customers experienced from the Glo 1derful package, one prays and hopes this package will prove its doubters wrong as the GLO INFINITO is well on its way to being one of the best prepaid offers in Nigeria.

AIRTEL 2GOOD PREPAID XTRA
After its rebranding from Zain to AIRTEL. Airtel has made an occupational vow to be the best Telecommunication outfit in Nigeria and the Airtel 2Good extra is testament to that. Airtel 2Good Xtra is definitely a revolutionary new plan with a 20k/sec rate to all networks in Nigeria, and very cheap international calls to USA, Canada, UK (fixed lines), China and India, with 20 free monthly on net SMS. Did i hear you say WOW simply 2GOOD.

However, despite being very cheap, we are wondering why the 60k/sec daily for first minute call and the minimum recharge of N100 monthly and what happened to the free monthly Sms to every network that use to be a major attraction to the network. We also wish that the usual service fluctuation is temporal.

It sure doesn’t hurt when we do analysis like this, especially for those of us craving for information. What we have learnt over time is that different networks can succeed concurrently with one another, especially with a wide range of customers with varying needs and priorities.

I recently recently received a spam mail that read NCC just introduced a regulatory rule that states ONE PERSON TO ONE SIM CARD.At first impulse i wrote it off as bogus and unbelievable , but then it hit me, what if just what if the NCC introduces such law, what if i was forced to choose one of my current three lines to have just one,one line that will facilitate and cater for all my needs and requirements ranging from call tariffs, mobile INTERNET,special offers which telecommunication line will be the best would it be MTN, GLOBACOM, AIRTEL, STARCOMMS, VISAFONE, or ETISALAT.

This indeed will be a daunting task,a choice that leaves you digging to deep with the fear of not making the right choice.

So i ask if you were told to pick one of the many service lines which would you pick.
