Science/Technology / Saheed Adepoju, Maker Of Africa's First Tablet PC Talks About His New Project by temiiii(m): 2:13pm On Oct 23, 2013
Saheed Adepoju became popular as the inventor of 'Inye', the first African Tablet PC. Today, 30 year old Saheed is living his dreams as a foremost Technology entrepreneur to come out of the shores of Nigeria. Saheed is also the co-founder of Encipher Group, a Nigerian based technology firm. In this week's edition of the Young and Emerging Leaders Series #YAELS, Saheed tells Dayo Ibitoye about his new start-up called Prossess which he is planning to tansform the nation's transportation sector with. Excerpts:

1. You co-founded Encipher group in 2008, what motivated you to starting an IT firm in Nigeria considering the vast challenges start-ups face in the country?

Entrepreneurship for me is a drive and a passion to do something entirely different from the traditional ways of doing ICT. Encipher was setup to take advantage of any emerging market opportunities. The tablet revolution came along and we decided to ride the wave of that revolution. All markets in the world have peculiar problems and we knew it would be a matter of time before we overcame the obstacles.

2. You have become popularly known as 'the man who invented Africa's first tablet'. What birthed the making of 'Inye' and how successful has it been?

The INYE tablet is our flagship brand for our tablet PC. What we invented is the brand and not the actual components itself. Consumers buy and adopt brands and we were able to successfully create such a brand and generate awareness with it. INYE has successfully helped Encipher as a company to illustrate its persistence and its potential to innovate given tough environment.

3. Your new start-up is called 'Prossess'. What exactly do you hope to achieve with Prossess?

Prossess smart devices Limited is the new startup I have been working on for over 6 months. Its aim is to build smart devices to solve local emerging problems. One of such problems is the lack of credible data/information to make critical decisions. Prossess will build smart devices for various sectors, e.g. Transport, Power, Environment etc and using these devices, generate datasets. These datasets are useful for building third party applications for further processing. Also, with OpenGovernment portals springing up all over the place, these datasets can be placed on these portals for international organizations to have a look and make data-centric decisions.

4. How do you plan to salvage the traffic situation in Nigeria?

One of the first steps involved in salvaging the traffic situation is to get important data about the traffic and this is the first step in the entire process. Our transport smart device provides meaning into the traffic situation via the use of a traffic analytics back-end which analyses the incoming data on the various routes.

5. Have you test-run it to see how well it can work in the country? What are your experiences like in this regard?

Our transport smart device has been tested in Abuja, Kaduna and Lagos. The device is essentially a modified traffic counter, which sends in real-time the speed and classification of vehicles passing over a pneumated tube. The data is transmitted over the internet. The device has performed very well and has a 95% accuracy. We also currently own a patent for the way our device sends datasets(speed and classification data) over the internet.

6. With apps like Gidi traffic which has become a household name in Nigeria, do you think Prossess have a better chance to win the heart of Nigerians?

Prossess and Gidi are on different ends of the spectrum. Gidi focuses on crowdsourced information while Prossess is focused on gathering actual data. Our aim is to give meaning to the data sets and generate relevant information for end users to use. Our data wont be crowdsourced and hence much more reliable to use. We also plan on providing consulting expertise to the transport sector to enable them understand the traffic in various parts of the country based on datasets generated by our smart devices to be placed on various routes.

7. How do you intend to fund prossess?

We are currently funded privately.

8. Do you have any challenge so far? If yes what are they? and how well are you working at overcoming them?

There were challenges with a power source for our smart device which we overcame with a 3-day power source but we are still working hard to have longer power sources.

9. When should we expect the full launch of Prossess into the Nigerian market?

We are currently working to ensure we launch Q1 2014 with a consumer app which helps motorist with information. However at the moment we are working on building datasets for the transport sector to aid in their decisions.

10. What are your future plans for the Encipher group?

Encipher currently is working with a development agency to build relevant local applications on our flagship product iNYE. We are currently employing vertical strategies to sell our devices and services. Thank you.

Science/Technology / This Bomb-proof Wrist Watch Can Withstand Any Type Of Explosion by temiiii(m): 2:17pm On Apr 23, 2013
Kaventsmann Triggerfish Bronze A2 is reputed to be the world’s toughest watch. The time piece has been tested to withstand any time of explosion. It has been pressure tested to 300 bar (that’s 3000 meters of water pressure), blown up with 10 pounds of C4, and still survived (except for a few scratches and a missing leather strap).

Kaventsmann manufacturer Michael Barahona Fernandez follows a time-honored watchmaking tradition, machining the case parts himself one at a time in his one-man workshop in Berlin, Germany.

The watch measures 45 mm wide and 20 mm tall. It is a bit heavier than conventional wristwatches and extremely durable

Sadly, only 30 pieces of the watch will be made, which means you have to act fast if you need one. To know more about the watch, then head straight to the Facebook page.

But will the integrity of your watch be the most important thing when you find yourself just 1 meter away from a bomb? I leave that for you to answer.

Science/Technology / Check Out The World's Most Expensive Smartphone, Costs $15M by temiiii(m): 4:40pm On Apr 16, 2013
This is undoubtedly the world’s most expensive smartphone. Stuart Hughes' phone costs a whooping $15 million. It has topped the Vertu's $9,600 Android phone and London Loutus $300,000-plus iPhone case with crystals.

The phone has a solid-gold chassis that Hughes crafted by hand. But the real cost comes from the most expensive home button in the world which is made of a single, deep-cut, black diamond that weighs 26 carats. The diamond is said to be worth $14.5 million.

The phone also contains 600 white, flawless diamonds located within the Apple logo on the back and on the edges.

ABC News reported that Hughes has a history of making gold Apple products, his Solid Gold iPhone costs $33,678 ( £21,995) and the iPad Supreme Fire Edition costs $168,424 (£109,995) - but with this one, "it's all about the rarity and value of the deep-cut, black diamond. “

Since most of the world’s population cannot afford the extremely expensive phone, it is not available to the general public . Hughes spent nine weeks creating the phone specifically for a Hong Kong businessman whom Hughes will only refer to as "Joe." Joe had owned the black diamond for a while and decided he wanted to place it on an iPhone after buying other, "cheaper" items from Hughes in the past.

Science/Technology / 10 Year Old Becomes Nigeria's Youngest Microsoft Certified Professional by temiiii(m): 7:19pm On Mar 06, 2013
10 year old Seyi-Ojo Anjolaoluwa demonstrated rare brilliance when he became the youngest Nigerian Microsoft certified Professional and indeed one of the youngest of such in the world.

Anjolaoluwa a JSS 1 pupil of Valencia College Ibadan, Oyo state achieved the rare feat when he scored 869 out of a possible 1000 in Administration Management and Configuration Exam 70 - 270, and thus adjudged by Microsoft as a certified professional in Microsoft Windows XP.

Microsoft Certified Professional is an internationally recognised certification programme provided by Microsoft cooperation. The certification is tailored towards building skills on Microsoft business solutions, focusing on client-end operating systems such as windows XP, Vista, Windows7 among others.

Alongside Anjolaoluwa were 5 other pupils of Valencia College, Adeyinka Oreoluwa, Odunsi Nicholas, Ajao Blessing Ololade Toluwanimi and Agbele Oluwaloniope also made good grades in the Microsft Exams and were thus certified, thus making a bold step at being the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs of their time.

Valencia College's Principal, Mrs Victoria Morakinyo commended the pupils for their enviable feat stressing that their achievements came as a result of the school's state-of-the-art facilities and employment of expert and quality teachers who in turn deliver qualitative education to the pupils.

Morakinyo also assured the pupils that pupils that the present feat was just the beginning of their ICT career.

On his part Mr Oresanya Joshua who is the Head of Training ITS, an Ibadan based IT company in charge of Valencia College's ICT section stressed that the achievements of the pupils deserves celebration while also saying that ICT should as a matter of urgency be integrated into the nation's school curricullum.

“Schools should be encouraged to embrace ICT because some schools still teach computer studies the same way they teach social studies without exposing the kids to practicals. If not for Anjolaoluwa and the other pupils that excelled in the Microsoft Professional Certification test, we would not have known that ICT gurus are within us,” Orasanya said.

Science/Technology / Behold The World's First Alarm Clock Toothbrush by temiiii(m): 4:59pm On Feb 21, 2013
Some folks are naturally neat-freak morning people. They wake up on time, feeling perky, bounce into the bathroom, and scrub their teeth first thing in the morning. Others need a little extra encouragement. That's where the Wayki alarm clock/toothbrush hopes to come in.

David Hawkins was having trouble dragging himself out of bed in the mornings. He decided he needed a two-part push. Half of the Wayki sits next to the bed, behaving like a regular alarm clock. When it goes off, the only way to silence it is to get up, take it into the bathroom, plug in the toothbrush portion, and trigger a 2-minute brushing timer. Before you know what hit you, you're up and scrubbing your teeth.
The Wayki is still in development, and Hawkins is gathering crowdsourced funding to make the push into production. So far, he has a proof-of-concept model for how the brush head inserts into the alarm and has an engineering team working out the rest of the details. He's trying to raise nearly $80,000 by offering early bird pledge prices of about $75 for a Wayki.

Alarm clocks have evolved in recent years to make it much more difficult to ignore them in the mornings. The Ramos clock makes you go into another room to turn it off. The Sleep If U Can Android alarm app makes you get up and take photos to shut it up. The snooze button-free Wayki fits right in with this trend.

If the Wayki becomes reality, I expect it will appeal to morning slackers who are lax about hitting snooze and need a little extra encouragement to fit oral hygiene into their schedules. All you perky morning people can just keep on living life like you normally do with your regular alarm clocks and gleaming smiles.
Here is a short video from Mashable to explain how it works http://dayoibitoye..com/2013/02/behold-worlds-first-alarm-clock.html

Science/Technology / Scientists Invent Computer That Repairs Itself by temiiii(m): 6:49pm On Feb 16, 2013
A self-healing computer has been created by scientists at the University College London (UCL). The Computer, they say can instantly recover corrupted data.

Scientists say the new invention will have far-reaching consequences for physicians and the military. It could allow drones to recover from combat damage in a matter of seconds, or create a more realistic model of the human brain.

In an interview with one of the scientists Peter Bentley , the computer is designed to be able to respond to random and unpredictable events, it thinks more like the human brain

“Even when it feels like your computer is running all your software at the same time, it is just pretending to do that, flicking its attention very quickly between each program,” he said.

Science/Technology / Belgium To Introduce Postage Stamps That Taste Like Chocolate by temiiii(m): 11:18am On Feb 13, 2013
Here's an innovation the ailing U.S. Post Office may want to consider: Tasty postage stamps.

Belgium, known for its confectionery treats, is planning to release postage stamps that smell and taste like chocolate on March 25. The Belgian Post Office has issued chocolate-scented stamps before in 1999 and 2006. But, as Creativity Online points out, this is the first time flavor has been added to the mix. How do they taste? Even if you don't live in Belgium, you can sample them by emailing philately@bpost.be.

The chocolate stamps (see images below) aren't the only innovation that the country's post office is planning this year. According to The Telegraph, the Belgian post office is planning to introduce stamps that glow in the dark to highlight road safety. Another five stamps will be printed with heat-sensitive ink to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Belgium's Royal Meteorological Institute

Science/Technology / EXCLUSIVE: 2go Advertising Platforms Set To Dominate The African Market by temiiii(m): 5:16pm On Feb 08, 2013
By Dayo Ibitoye

With the recent launch of its advertising platforms, ‘the 2go Ad Platform and 2go Market Research’, popular mobile social network and IM, 2go has proven to the world its dire quest to dominate the African market.

The company has in the last one year spent a lot on building advertising platforms and help brands engage with their users in a targeted but non-invasive way.

The 2go Ad Platform enables brands and advertising agencies to target and engage with 2go’s growing base of young savvy users. 2go Market Research on the other hand leverages the power of the 2go community to conduct real-time surveys and polls that deliver actionable insights with immediate value to clients. There is a Splash Screen Ad when you log in, also there is an Interactive Text Ads inside the app that appears as a contact.

According to Ricardo Pasqualotto, the Africa Sales Manager of 2go, the company’s most successful advertising unit is the premium full-screen clickable splash screen ad.

“The experience of this feature for a user is much more engaging than a normal banner or text based ad. The splash ad is more akin to seeing an advert in a cinema, where it is high quality and the user is highly engaged in the experience, rather than a small banner or text based ad, which is more of a distraction or afterthought for users”.

He said the company already has some brands on the ad platforms which include McDonalds, Vodacom, KFC and Standard Bank (Stanbic Nigeria).

2go focuses on emerging markets, where users chat and share photos with friends and family; meet new people and chat and play games in chat rooms.

2go has over 20m registered users across South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria of which 9m are active in Nigeria and 1.5m in South Africa. This statistics shows that Nigeria has become the platform’s biggest market globally overtaking South Africa. Still, 2go is getting more and more popular, even on search engines.

In Google Zeitgeist 2010, Facebook was toppled by 2go, in terms of search volume and the term, “2go” became the fastest rising search query in Nigeria during that year.

Ricardo also said over 6 billion messages are sent over the 2go network every month.

What is the future of the platform in Nigeria and Africa at large?
Ricardo told DIB “We will continue to focus on emerging markets in Nigeria which is our biggest market right now and Africa in general. Also we are targeting other countries like India and Brazil”.

“Considering that Nigeria alone has a population of 160m there is still plenty of opportunity for growth. We’re just getting started, we will continue to focus on our core social offering; continuously improve the user experience and add more features (constantly investigating ways to better design our app for our target consumer base).

“This also means evolving with our users as they shift from feature to smart phones. We are currently focused on developing native Android and Blackberry apps. Ricardo said.

There is therefore no doubt that as a growing youth social media platform, 2go is perfectly positioned to give any brand the correct exposure.

Science/Technology / $500 Million Cable Car Mass Urban Transit System Set To Launch In Lagos by temiiii(m): 3:25pm On Feb 04, 2013
A $500 million cable car mass urban transit system is set to launch in Lagos courtesy of investor, Ropeways Transport limited.
The cable car transit system will provide commuters an affordable and safe means of transportation. Ropeways reportedly signed a 30 year Franchise Agreement with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the Government of Lagos State on the project.

The various routes covered in the Lagos environs include Ijora – Iddo, Iddo – Adeniji, Apapa – Oluwole, Oluwole – Adeniji, Adeniji – Obalende, Obalende – Falomo, and Falomo – Victoria Island.
Commuters are expected to pay about N200 and N300 per trip.
According to Dapo Olumide, C.E.O of Ropeways Transport Limited, “By complementing existing transport modes, the Lagos Cable Car Transit System will play its part in reducing the traffic congestion in the city.”

“The existing metropolitan highway infrastructure is severely constrained, with journeys to and from work within the city regularly exceeding three hours. In addition, studies carried out in 2009 on vehicle registration show that an additional 200,000 vehicles are registered annually in Lagos State.
This equates to 222 vehicles per kilometre of road in Lagos, which by far outweighs the national average of just 11 vehicles per kilometer of road, with vehicles estimated to contribute more than 70 per cent of the air pollution in Lagos,” he said.

“Presently, there is a need to ameliorate the existing congestion on the three bridges connecting Lagos Mainland to Lagos Island and to provide a link between Apapa and the Central Business District on Lagos Island, and also to link Victoria Island with the Central Business District of Lagos Island. These are what we hope to achieve with the launch of the cable transit system,” he added.

The whole idea behind the training is simply to show that many abandoned pets are smart, trainable and can do surprising things. As in the case of the dog in this video, pets infact can even be molded into good drivers if you so desire.

Science/Technology / Check Out Pen That Helps You Translate While You Read by temiiii(m): 11:50am On Jan 28, 2013
There's no doubt that new emerging technologes are changing the way things are being done. Years ago one would never believe translation can just be at the finger tips, but with the Ivy Guide, a device that fits over pens and pencils, scans words and projects its translation directly onto the document, translation is just made easy.

.
How does it work:

The scanner tip adjusts to any writing tool with a flexible sponge, and while pressing the translating button, readers can underline text. The word is then projected in the chosen language, and cleared by pressing again. The scanner connects to a USB for easy charging.

Developed by three designers Shi Jian, Sun Jiahao and Li Ke. According to them the Ivy Guide will keep users in the habit of making marks and also create a continuous reading experience.

Though the device is currently in its concept stage, its creators hope to do away with the experience of heavy dictionaries or bulkier electronics.

Amazing isn't it? Check out the video for more.
