Politics / PDP, APC In War Of Words Over Recovered $311m Abacha Loot by thaymithorpey: 3:47pm On May 07, 2020
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday said it has uncovered fresh plots by a cabal in the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress, APC, to allegedly use fake subheads and duplicated projects as a ploy to re-loot the recently repatriated $311 million traced to late former military dictator, General Sani Abacha, retd. But APC in a swift reaction, said the PDP was frustrated by a lack of access to loot public funds.

This is even as the Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, asked Nigerians to focus on what the funds would be used for and desist from throwing undue tantrums on his office and the Federal Government. However, PDP yesterday claimed that the cabal had perfected the use of fake subheads as nomenclatures to “mislead those who repatriated the fund and pave the way for the frittering of the money to their private pockets as they had done with earlier repatriated funds.” It demanded that the fund be surrendered to the National Assembly for proper statutory appropriation and urged Nigerians to resist schemes by the cabal to prevent them from demanding explanations on the looting of repatriated funds,” it added...read more

Juventus players Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi have fully recovered from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, and will no longer need to self-isolate, the Italian side have said.

Rugani and Matuidi are two of three Juventus players who last month tested positive for the virus. The duo were asymptomatic, but the third player, forward Paulo Dybala, showed strong symptoms.

“Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi underwent, as per protocol, a double-check with diagnostic tests (swabs) for the Coronavirus-COVID-19,” Juventus said on their website.

“The tests came back with negative results. The players have, therefore, recovered and are no longer subjected to the home isolation regime.”

Serie A has been suspended since March 9 but the Italian football federation is hoping clubs can resume training with precautionary measures in place after the current lockdown in Italy ends on May 3.

UEFA is coming under pressure to cancel ALL leagues in Europe because of the COVID-19 crisis. European football’s governing body is due to meet again in a video conference next Thursday to decide on a schedule for countries to follow to get football played again.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has already made it clear that he wants football to start up again across the continent, with domestic leagues hopefully finished by early August, to allow the Champions League and Europa League to be completed by the end of that month.

But Belgium, who shut down their Jupiler Pro League two weeks ago, is among several countries who want all leagues ended now, and no restart until the pandemic is officially over – and they intend to lobby for support for that motion at the meeting...Read more

Sports / We Can’t Lock Down North — Northern Govs by thaymithorpey: 3:47pm On Apr 14, 2020
he meeting, which was conducted via teleconference and chaired by the forum’s Chairman, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, shared experiences on measures adopted by individual states to deal with the disease.

A statement by Lalong’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Macham Makut, on Monday, stated that after receiving reports from various states, the governors resolved to strengthen preventive measures against the pandemic through enhanced boundary controls and surveillance, as well as greater collaboration to ensure that there was a synergy among them in restriction of movement.

The statement said, “They (northern governors) agreed that at the moment, each state would adopt the measure suitable to its setting because total lockdown of the region will come at a very high cost since most of its citizens are farmers who need to go to farms since the rains have started.

“Another issue discussed by the northern governors was the issue of palliatives from the Federal Government where they regretted that so far, no state in the region had received a dime as special allocation despite the fact that some of them have recorded cases while others are making frantic efforts to prevent any outbreak, as well as prepare against any eventuality.

“This they observed has eaten deep into the pockets of the states as they have spent a lot of money already and may not be able to sustain this for a long time. Since prevention is better than cure, they canvassed that the Federal Government grants them some special funds just as it has done to other states.

“The northern governors lamented that the region has no testing center, which is very disturbing. They resolved to again liaise with the Federal Government to ensure that each state at least gets one testing center while highly populated ones get two.

“The governors also discussed the economic impact of COVID-19 on the region and decided that they needed to take a holistic look at the economic prospects of the region with a view to repositioning it for less reliance on federal allocation and to prepare for the future by diversifying to areas of comparative advantage such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and human capital development.

“They consequently set up a seven-man committee chaired by the Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, to fashion out the way forward. “Other members are the governors of Kaduna, Sokoto, Kwara, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Gombe and Nasarawa states.”
