Computers / Re: Best Antivirus To Use by TheArbiter: 5:55am On Apr 04, 2012
Have used Bitdefender products on my 32 bit windows system as far back as 2007. From my progress from Vista to Windows 7 ultimate OS, i have gone through the various releases of the product and have been generally immune. I had separately used Avast, AVG and Norton and got hit by viruses using them before i quit (that was before 2007).

I have roved through some of the most malicious websites in the world with hardly a scratch using Bitdefender. But bear in mind that all antivirus are as good as the user and i use a fairly bullet-proof OS. That said, i recommend Bitdefender to any interested person.

My 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS uses Bitdefender Total Security 2012.
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by TheArbiter: 5:28am On Apr 04, 2012
@purplekayc @blackweaver

Generally, it is presumed the Linux OS is safe from malware. However, the increased adoption of the OS for enterprise server applications has focused hackers attention to it. Despite this it is still more robust to attacks than Windows due to its modular permissions and kernel structure. Free AV applications for the Linux OS are available for download through the synaptic package manager on most distributions of the OS. The common ones are ClamAv, AVG, Avast and Bitdefender.

I currently run ClamAV on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin). Its light, fast and versatile. If u're not a CMD line whiz, it has a GUI as a separate download to facilitate ease of use.

I would advise any1 interested in Linux AV to invest a little time reading up installation and use (If u're interested in using one). Even though simple to install and use, a lot depends on your particular distribution, and cannot be covered in brief tutorials on this forum.

Education / Re: Important Info. For Jambites!! Before Changing Your Institution! by TheArbiter: 4:26pm On Apr 02, 2012
A NOTE OF WARNING TO ALL CANDIDATES INTENDING TO CHANGE INSTITUTIONS

I am speaking from experience and a real life situation that played out last year. Change of institution over the internet is a futile excercise in money and energy, which i suppose a few candidates might have discovered.

Firstly, JAMB put its master database in a lock down mode after registration closes and subsequently hosts a copy of it on its website. Only results are updated in the master database while the online one is open to all sorts of various updates as you may wish.

Secondly, the master lists sent out to institutions are generated from the master database and not from the hosted online copy. The master database is intended to be updated via a sync with the online one by the database admins but it seems they are yet to perfect the code for doing it effectively.

Thirdly, some of the changes requested by candidates are in conflict with the requirements of some institution and leads to the outright disqualification of such candidates from post-UTME tests. This happens because the registration mechanism has no code to check and validate such. The occurrence of such observed changes is also responsible for the relunctance of JAMB to implement such updates from the online database.

Fourthly, unless if a drastic overhaul had been implemented and the current dabase and admins were different from last year then its the same kettle of fish. You make changes online that doesnt reflect in the lists sent to the various institutions.

I discovered the above after we attempted to changed my cousins institution. I changed it to an institution where i had a contact in their IT dept. The JAMB master lists on CD's arrived and a check showed my cousin was not on the list. Went to Abuja and had a friend check their database, he confirmed my cousin's first choice was still the initial. I asked why and he gave the first 3 reasons above.

If anybody really wants to do it. They may well bear it in mind to go to their initial first choice schools to check when the post-UTME lists comes out.

PS: Also found out JAMB didnt send 2nd choice lists to institutions last year. It did so the year before but not last year.

Family / Re: She Said My Father Touched Her. by TheArbiter: 3:34pm On Apr 02, 2012
@coldfeet

I truely sympathazie with your situation and salute your courage in facing the reality. Most other people would have dismissed it but being a victim made you open and receptive to the probability its true. I have once advised a young girl about such a situation once and it worked. But in the instance i mentioned, she was the one molested. But i believe a variation of the script will work for you.

The main essence is to put the fear of God and exposure into him so that he will quit the develish habit. You however need the coperation of the cousin in question. The best solution, however is to send the girl away immediately. If this is not possible in any way then i'll recommend you look at the possibility of implementing the list below in a most convincing manner.

1. Firstly approach your dad with an untrue tale of your friend being molested and your circle of friends recommending she opens up to the pastor about it (I'm assuming u're a christian).

2. Next get your cousin to openly declare she's having a confession, preferrably a day before church. Your dad may try various means to prevent her from going to church or buying her off, because he may suspect the game is up.

3. Get your cousin to stay behind after church under the pretext of seeing the pastor, but make sure you're there to keep an eye on her. If possible i would advise she truly opens up to your pastor but ommit your dad's name out of the confession (few girls can do this witout breaking down and spilling the beans so i wont advise it).

4. Next help her get her eyes reddened and head home. You may probably find your dad at the gate waiting. If he asks you what happened, declare that your cousin told the pastor she was molested but declined to mention whom. I would then advise that you open up about your own experience but make it a light once or twice incident and show your vehemence and rain curses on such people.

Now all these requires a bit of acting but i bet it will work (a variation of this worked on a randy uncle to a teenage 16yr old). If your dad doesnt desist, i'll advise you send the girl away immediately if you're worried about his integrity because it would blowup in his face if he cotinues(your cousin seems to have a mind of her own).

This issue seems a bit rampant, based on my discourse with a lot of girls and adult ladies, that i've come to conclude that every 3 in 10 girls in Nigeria is molested one way or the other before the age of 18. I'll advise every parent to keep a sharp lookout, especially for doting uncles, cousins, niece, rental compound so called relations etc. They are mostly the perpetrators of such evil designs.

Wish you every luck.

Crime / Re: Nigerian Beaten To Death In Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) by TheArbiter: 5:11am On Apr 02, 2012
@udogati

I must commend u for your demeanor, i find it refreshing to the sometimes foul vituperations on the forum. The ignorance of Nigerians can be astounding. I believe most find it difficult to grasp the idea that a lady could resist such an advance. In Nigeria, it might be acceptable. But in Malaysia, Indonesia and other Asian Muslim countries, you do so at a great risk to yourself. B4 any ignorant loud-mouthed individual starts a religious discourse out of this, bear in mind that its not that the ladies in this countries are not promiscuous. If they are interested, they secretively pop into the relative privacy of a room for their fix. If a lady in these countries, or even western nations, says no, you proceed at your own risk.

It seems, from sources, that Nwankwo was executing a bet for cash he had with friends over bedding the cleaner in question hence his desperate behavior. Nwankwo erred, no question about it, but didnt deserve the fate he got. The response of his friends only makes life more difficult for Nigerian students in KL who already have to bear with the negative potraits of fraud, prostitution, theft, visa evasion, violence, etc.

Bottom line: If u're in Rome behave like the Romans.

You definitely have a point about the strain on the eyes after prolonged viewing. However, i believe you could have done a better job than the current theme. I took the liberty of browsing some sites i believe are a bit gentle on the eyes (See links below). Why not take a cue from them and give Nairaland a more fantastic look.

Religion / Re: What Was The Official Church's Position On Slave Trade While It Was Happening? by TheArbiter: 6:57pm On Mar 21, 2012
@ Mai-Suya, here are the book titles as i promised:

1. Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa by Prof. Paul E. Lovejoy
This history of slavery in Africa from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century examines how indigenous African slavery developed within an international context. Professor Lovejoy discusses the medieval Islamic slave trade and the Atlantic trade as well as the process of enslavement and the marketing of slaves. He considers the impact of European abolition and assesses slavery's role in African history. The book corrects the accepted interpretation that African slavery was mild and resulted in the slaves' assimilation. Instead, slaves were used extensively in production, although the exploitation methods and the relationships to world markets differed from those in the Americas.

2. The Slave Trade Debate by John Pinfold
At the height of the debate about the slave trade and its abolition in the 1780s and '90s, each side issued pamphlets in support of its position. This publication reproduces a selection of representative pamphlets encompassing the arguments put forward by each side. The pamphlets discuss many of the issues including humanitarianism and the Rights of Man, the economic well-being of Britain's colonial territories in the aftermath of the loss of the American colonies, the state of the British merchant marine and the Royal Navy, the condition of the poor in England, and, not least, the economic and moral condition of the slaves themselves, not only in the West Indies but also in Africa. Both sides drew freely on scriptural sources to support their case, thus providing a fascinating sidelight on theological debate of the time. The book includes pamphlets written by the Duke of Clarence, later King William IV, and by Sir John Gladstone (father of the Prime Minister) in support of the trade, and sets these against the leading abolitionists such as Wilberforce. It also includes a transcript of part of the unpublished journal of James Ramsay, a well-known abolitionist, in which he provides model answers for abolitionists asked to testify before a committee of enquiry.
Programming / Re: [Help Request] Help On Java download and Installation Oo! by TheArbiter: 5:03pm On Mar 18, 2012
I'm amused by your questions Handsomness. It really takes patience to put you through.

1. The MSI installer is the phyton software modules packaged for windows. It fully installs all important phyton libraries on your system.

2. After installing the MSI you can run phyton programs/software on your system.

3. To write programs or code you need an editor or Integrated Development Environment (IDE). I can only recommend free ones like

a) PyScripter Download here: http://code.google.com/p/pyscripter/
b) PyDev Download here: http://pydev.org/
c) Eric Python IDE Download here: http://eric-ide.python-projects.org/eric-download.html
d) Geany Download here: http://www.geany.org/

They are all good. I dont know which one is better so ask the gurus on Nairaland for advice

4. It seems you are interested in Java programming too. The Netbeans 7.1.1 IDE is a free JAVA IDE. The full application is about 250MB - 300MB. Download the full version, install it and you can use it for JAVA (Web, Mobile, Desktop, etc) coding.

Download it from here: http://netbeans.org/downloads/

5. There are a lot of good JAVA tutorials on the web depending on your development focus; desktop, web, mobile, embedded etc. Skip over to www.ebookee.org website, type JAVA into the search and decide which you want to download. In the meantime, send me a blank email with the subject JAVA and i send you two good beginner books for desktop and web development.

6. Sorry, i dont give out phone details.

Hope it clears up all your questions.

@ Mai-Suya I would rather refer you to the works of two historians considered authorities on the subject but unfortunately, i am currently in transit and without access to my library. I promise to post the titles and authors in a future post. But in the meantime the wikkipedia entry below caputures the essence of what i had posited:

Link = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_for_Effecting_the_Abolition_of_the_Slave_Trade

Now before someone starts raising dust that Quakers were mentioned and not protestants. Kindly note that protestants were so named because they protested (rebelled) against mainstream English church ideology as practiced then and formed their own church. They were persecuted but finally prevailed. Evangelical christians were a later phenomenom. Readers of wikkipedia may find a passing reference to Dominincan (catholic) friars as the first religious body to condemn slavery. I wont urge too much emphasis on that as an exoneration of the catholic church. The friar involved was constantly harrassed for his views and the laws enacted were merely symbolic.
Programming / Re: [Help Request] Help On Java download and Installation Oo! by TheArbiter: 6:57pm On Mar 17, 2012
OK, lets take it slowly. Read everything here to the bottom before you try the installation.

1. Open your control panel, click on the system icon. You will see your system specs. The system type will be as shown in the red circle in the 32 bit pic below.

2. The file Windows x86 MSI Installer (3.2.2) is your phyton installer. It contains the phyton installer only. It installs python 3.2.2 on your 32 bit windows system when you run it. Just download the installer suitable for your system type. You do not need the Visual studio stuff (i did a quick copy and paste and it was included).

3. The 64 bit Phyton installer is Windows X86-64 MSI Installer (3.2.2) [1] (sig)

4. By the way sig means the files are signed to protect them being changed by virus or people and can be checked with a hash tool. Dont bother your head about this because you are downloading from the source site.

5. If your system is Vista or Windows 7, when you right-click an executable file like an installer, a menu pops up as shown in the Admin pic below. You then select run as Admin to install the program properly on the system. If you are not running Vista or Windows 7, just double click to run it.

6. After downloading, run the MSI Installer. Follow installation instructions to install Phyton 3.2.2 on your system.

7. After installation finishes you are ready to start coding with phyton 3.2.2. Remember what i said about modules.

8. Note: The visual studio debug files are not necessary unless if you plan to use Phyton with visual studio.net. So ignore it totally.

Hope this helps. As a show of appreciation, why not sign in and click like on the posts.

Religion / Re: What Was The Official Church's Position On Slave Trade While It Was Happening? by TheArbiter: 6:08pm On Mar 17, 2012
This subject has been explored in depth by historians. The church dogma previously classed Africans as barbarians without souls and subhuman with the white man being superior and godsend. This essentially encouraged trafficking in African slaves in which over 8 million African lives were lost. But bear in mind that before the transAtlantic trafficking, a tranSaharan trade in slaves to Europe and the middle east was in existence.

The church's position was a mainly pecuniary decision coupled with its disdain for the black African. Recall that black signifies everything evil in church ideology then. Also, the new world colonizers payed handsomely for royal charters and church approvals which they use to stake claims in the new world. The trade continued for 300 years untill protestant christians in Britain contested the catholic dogma of Africans being subhuman without souls. A lot of debate erupted and thankully Africans were admitted as members of the human race and God's family. The fight to stop the trade then lasted another 50+ years.

A lot of controversy still rages round the number of slaves involved. Documented records indicate over 8 million transported. Deaths were only reported by official cargo ships and a lot of the illegal trafficking were never documented.

In all, the atrocity which can be aptly termed genocide, was like many other issues in which the church goofed, a great stain on the church's integrity and seriously questioned its authority as the divine representative on earth. Up till today the issue is mostly hushed and the late Abiola's efforts at compensation, just like the jews were compensated for Hilter's holocust, was rebuffed.

Anyways, all that is history. I only pray the Nigerian people will see through the red blood-thirsty mists of religion to realize that the African has suffered long and only the common brotherhood of place/location binds us rather than the warped dogmas we sometimes profess.

May we have the hearts to see and the courage to take the decisions that lead us to greatness.

Still with your Firefox or Chrome navigate to the official phyton download site for the current latest version: http://www.python.org/getit/releases/3.2.2/

The current latest version is Python 3.2.2 (Released September 4, 2011),

1. Scroll down the page untill you get to the downloads section, If your system is a 32 bit system click Windows x86 MSI Installer (3.2.2) (sig) and Visual Studio debug information files (sig) to begin download otherwise select the 64 bit installer below it.

2. Go to the folder where the installer is, right-click and run as administrator. Accept all the default installer suggestions and you are done.

3. Documentation, which is like a help library is available at the middle of the page here http://www.python.org/doc/.

4. Phyton has a lot of modules to enhance development, coded by expert developers, each with its strenght and weaknesses depending on your target platform. You can install and uninstall them as you want. Currently I have no suggestions for now because i'm not using Phyton, but the Nairaland forum has a section with coders. Why not drop them a line.

Hope it helps.
Islam for Muslims / Re: Is Thierry Henry A Muslim? by TheArbiter: 9:15am On Mar 16, 2012
Nigerians never cease to amaze. Ignorant and proud they rant in the sweet bliss of their ignorance. My christians friends should not take offence but i have done enough research to satisfy myself:

CHRISTIANITY IS CURRENTLY THE BLOODIEST RELIGION ON EARTH. Historical data puts the numbers of deaths by christians or their allies at over

50 million while the numbers of deaths by muslims and their allies is over a mere 9 million.

I'm talking facts so lets start with a few. The transatlantic slave trade was started by christians. By the time it ended about 5 million Africans have been murdered during the crossing and over 8 million enslaved. Note that these are conservative figures.
When America was discovered over 150 years ago, there were about 3 million red Indians, after massacres and wars at the hands of christians colonizers, today they are history.
Battle of Belgrad 1456: 80,000 Turks slaughtered.
Antiochia (then turkish) conquered, between 10,000 and 60,000 slain. 100,000 Turks (incl. women & children) killed. Here the Christians "did no other harm to the women found in [the enemy's] tents—save that they ran their lances through their bellies," according to Christian chronicler Fulcher of Chartres.
Christian chronicler Eckehard of Aura noted that "even the following summer in all of palestine the air was polluted by the stench of decomposition". One million victims of the first crusade alone.
Peasants of Steding (Germany) unwilling to pay suffocating church taxes: between 5,000 and 11,000 men, women and children slain 5/27/1234 near Altenesch/Germany.
Emperor Karl (Charlemagne) in 782 had 4500 Saxons, unwilling to convert to Christianity, beheaded.

The list is long but lets leave that aside for another day. As regards christianity, most are ignorant of its current origins. Christ was a jew, pure and simple. All that exists today is apostle paul's handiwork.

Before you start ranting i'm wrong, give facts not empty words.

NYSC / Re: When Is The Next Registration For NYSC For Foreign Students For 2012? by TheArbiter: 8:36am On Mar 16, 2012
Okija juju has the correct facts. If on graduation, your 1st degree certificate places your age below 30 years then you are eligible for NYSC even if you are 40 years old by the time you come back to Naija. You can choose to unilaterally avoid it but remember, no govt, corporate or political jobs for you.

As regards the registration, if your first degree is from a Nigerian institution, you go to your alma mater and register. If your alma mater is abroad, then you pop into any regional NYSC office with copies of your documents and register. Registration usually begins after the current NYSC orientation ends.

Hope you find this helpful.

You need Firefox browser or Chrome and a moderately fast internet connection.

1. Got to the website http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp and click the big red "free java download" button
2. It will automatically detect your windows version and take you to the next page with a big red "Agree and start free download"
3. After the download finishes, open the folder where your browser placed the downloaded file, right click on it and run as administrator
4. When the installer runs, click Agree, Ok and next for all the installer requests. When it finishes, You have the latest java installed on your system

Hope this helps

I just wonder how ignorant the west and south can be; of course professors exist in the north. Can we also clear up the ignorant misconception about education. Islam considers all knowledge to be sole property of the creator freely given to whomsoever wants it. If some few ignorant muslims claim western education is bad that their opinion not Islam's.

By the way how many are aware that Islam was the catalyst for scientific knowledge in the 17th and 18th century. No be argument, just google it and learn.
