Programming / People Who've Worked For Foreign Companies, Do They Check Work Experience? by TheChrisader: 10:42am On Nov 26, 2022
Let's say, for example, for the last two-ish years I've been working on projects that a Russian guy that lives here in Nigeria has been outsourcing to me, and I've been getting paid for my work.

The guy is an independent contractor, and sometimes works with multiple companies that exist back in his home country at once. He gets these projects from them, splits them up into tasks, and assigns them to the appropriate workers. I'm a frontend developer, so I got the frontend work.

It's been a nice gig, but as a result of the work this guy is doing, he's not particularly interested in having his name be shared out to companies as proof of previous work experience on my behalf.

So, I haven't been including my work experience in my CV to avoid having future employers potentially asking me to validate the work history I have (because I can't without the guy vouching for me, which he won't, which will make it seem like I lied on my resume), but the number of jobs that I've been looked over because it seems like I'm just a fresh junior to the field doesn't really make sense to me.

So I'm here to ask how foreign companies vet your work history to people who've gotten foreign jobs before. I'd like to know how I'd go about running this thing.

To better structure what exactly my questions are:

1. If you've had a remote job, did the company you worked at verify your previous work experience?

2. If they did verify, how did they do it?

3. Did you encounter any issue during the verification process?

Because since this guy doesn't want to help my ministry, I was thinking of just putting Freelancer/Web Consultant on my resume to showcase the two years of experience I have. The problem I have with this approach is that I'll be unable to back it up if any employer asked for references, even though I'm more than able to speak for myself with my coding prowess, ability to work on a remote team using slack, trello, etc, in a professional environment using git, linters, pre-commit hooks, CI/CD with github actions, unit and end-to-end testing, and all that.

I've got some questions geared towards the logistical side of things that I think a bunch of us could benefit from knowing about.

Please, if you've got experience dealing with these areas, help us out by answering.

If you've got a job working for a company overseas, how do you receive payments? Do you have a dollar account at a bank, or do you use third part services like PayPal?

How do you deal with taxes? Do you have to pay abroad, and then in Nigeria, or just in Nigeria (if you pay taxes at all, lol)

What sort of identification do they require you provide? NIN? Passport? Do they even require you to prove that you are who you say you are, or is a virtual face to face interview enough?

It's practically impossible for companies to do a proper background check on us, so do they even try?

Does anybody here work, or knows someone that works, at any of the big tech companies (Microsoft, Google, Netflix, Apple, Amazon, etc) remotely from Nigeria? I'm not talking about their branches here in the country, I mean for the actual companies abroad.

Stuff like that.

For working in FAANG, it's very possible bro. There are ways/factors that can ease the process. Check out the requirements and understand the interview process. If you are prepared, apply for positions/openings that you're a good fit.

Working in FAANG from Nigeria, abi? Not all of us want to bounce.

Well, I can't be here just consuming info without giving anything back.

I don't know how to do links, so you guys will have to copy the text and paste in your browser.

github.com/TheAlgorithms is an open source resource for learning Data Structures and Algorithms and their implementation in various programming languages. Their algorithms are usually implemented following best practices.

30secondsofinterviews.org is a curated list of common interview questions for web developers.

And github.com/danieldelcore/mega-interview-guide is a massive primer for intermediate to advanced javascript knowledge that may pop up on interviews. Not necessary to know all of it, but you're better off knowing them than you would be if you didn't.

Yeah some companies give take homes but it's so rare. Out of like 10 interviews I only get one take home the rest are all dsa.

What's the difficulty range of the ones you've got? Easy? Medium? Does Dynamic Programming pop up a lot?

Yeah, I am a full stack developer but I focused on frontend (VueJs and Reactjs) when I realised this because I have always hoped to get a remote job and earn in dollars. Right now I am expecting positive results from three different companies in USA, Colombia, and Poland.
I have already passed their assessment tests (I was asked to build a mini app) and waiting for the final interview. I hope I will be favoured.

You managed to connect with them through LinkedIn, right? Or through alternative means?
