Politics / Northern Elder Yakasai, Blasts Obasanjo For Condemning Jonathan by thelastpope10: 9:40am On Jun 06, 2013
KANO — Elder statesman Salihu Abubakar Tanko Yakasai, yesterday, berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his constant criticisms of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
In a statement, yesterday, in Kano, entitled, ‘My opinion on the recent democracy day celebration in Nigeria,’ he condemned Obasanjo for attacking the sitting President openly without exploiting several other options.
Yakasai’s reaction came on the heels of recent remarks by Obasanjo at an economic summit organised at the instance of Jigawa State Government in Dutse, the state capital, where Obasanjo was quoted as saying that “you can help someone to get a job but you cannot help that person do the job.”
The former liaison officer to ex-President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic, described Obasanjo’s comment as a “unpalatable.”
He stressed that “using such a highly enlightened forum to underrate the achievement of the Jonathan administration, especially in the area of macro economic growth, is unfair.”
He stated that “as a patriotic Nigerian, a Democracy Day celebration is hardly a suitable occasion for any making a personal attack on his country’s leader whatever differences that exist between them.”
Yakasai asked Obasanjo to borrow a leaf from the First Republic politicians who “despite our differences with NPC leaders, NEPU leaders and members of the opposition, “never took our political differences with Sir Ahmadu Bello to the level of attacking his personality.”
Yakasai decried what he called Obasanjo’s unforgiving spirit whenever he had cause to disagree with anyone, saying that “Obasanjo’s method of disagreement with people is sometimes regarded as a matter of life and death.”
The elder statesman added that “people close to him say whenever General Obasanjo disagrees with a person, he would carry the fight to his place of worship, to his dining table and sometimes he will even be fighting the person in his dream.”
He therefore advised Obasanjo to pursue his political differences with the sitting Commander in Chief with “decorum, tolerance and states manly standard, stressing that, “this is the most honourable path for a man of his stature.”

This is good. But why wait this long before naming them as a terrorist organisation

The major reason they have not being declared a terrorists organisation in the past is because they were still looking at solving it through civil means. Once you declare it a terrorist organisation, you completely cut off the civil angle. You put an end to all negotiating channels officially, including back channels. But since all attempt at civil resolution has failed and the government has moved in with force, it is only right they declare it a terrorist group officially. Especially with the public show of support for the state of emergency and military action. One reason the government has been skeptical about full military action is because they were not sure how the people in the host communities will react. If they dont support government efforts, then a total military campaign might fail and lead to enormous civilian casualties. But the show of support from the host communities has been great so far.

Anyway, some caught my attention (apart from the fact that most of ur points above are littered with obvious lies and blatant inaccuracies): you faulted Buhari for never speaking up against Abacha's regime--- Could you pls remind us of just one notable Igbo leader that spoke up against Abacha's Govt? Also, could you please tell us who were the founders of Association for Better Nigeria and their role in promoting Abacha's as life President. Finally, if you don't mind, pls remind us the role of Arthur Nzeribe and the Abacha Presidency.

Thanks in advance.

This your response is what they call beautiful nonsense. You couldnt fault the guy but chose to go on a tangent and ask what of other people. Did Buhari not do all those things? What has someone else got to do with what Buhari did. The truth is, you funny chaps will always seek to divert attention from the attrocities of the bigot but you will never succeed because what he has done, cannot be changed or undone. The guy is a bigot and a useless man. If you chose to ignore the atrocities he committed against your own people because of a blind followership you have for him, that is your business. Or if you chose to always defend him because you think he is pushing your Islamic interest, that is your cup of tea. But Buhari will always remain a terrible person. Probabaly one of the worst leaders this country has ever seen. Now, even his utterance is giving him up. Some of us have always said this is his mindset and some of you have always said we are lying, but alas, he has proven you wrong and proven us right from his own mouth!

16 out of 23 means you lost 7 votes/governors and that's a huge loss. Even losing 1 is a huge loss talk less 7 governors.

His political base and support is shrinking and the ground under his feet is shifting like quick sand. Not accepting the results of the election and deploying dubious means to regain control that exist anymore reeks panic and desperation, but unfortunately, his compounding his failure and eventual downfall...

And it's very puerile to say the opposition prefer the PDP, a little political and opposition sense and knowlegde should tell you that for the APC, theirs is to destroy the opposition/PDP and it doesn't matter who they team up with to do it, even if the opportunity rests with GEJ, they'll team up with him just to destroy the PDP.

Please get off the emotional ride and face the obvious reality, the PDP is in disarray and GEJ is fast losing his cloths and in no time, he'll lose his shoes all over again..

You are a political ignoramus, no insult intended. So you think that if the PDP has differences, they will also carry those differences into the 2015 election and allow the opposition to win? So you think those 7 govs will allow APC win and they will now be opposition and be begging Tinubu for positions? You are really delusional. Once the primaries are decided, everyone will simply fall in line and work for the success of the party just like 2011

gbollyhosha: to me the outcome of the NGF election , is based on politics played by jonathan , he want to know his standard in so called NGF , now it very por for him and this expose the capacity of opposition party , thing is getting serious in nigeria now , 2015 will be very interesting , i love that TINUBU is behind the victory of amechi , let wait and see what will happen in the next 5 month

The NGF election was a good thing for PDP. It allowed them define the stand of their gorvernors. Achieving that 2 years to elections is a big plus. It wasnt about the strength of the opposition. It was about the power play within the PDP. If you think Tinubu controlled or influenced Amaechi, then you know nothing. Amaechi was only using the opposition to pursue his ambition. But he was left with nothing. He cannot move to APC because he will be powerless there. BUt was still, he is now a persona non grata in the PDP. Uteerly useless and thoughtless move from him. Fashola can sue all he wants, It will mean nothing. There is nothing to prove. It isnt about who won but who leads. Fighting about who won would only be relevant in a constitutional body with the people mandate at stake, not the governors interests. If you think that because some folks are making noise on NL, then the whole country is interested in the outcome, you are on your own

one of the greatest falsehood in Islam in Nigeria is the census. Common sense shows clearly that the muslims in Nigeria are not nearly as many as the Christians. In Borno State the the percentage of muslims is less than 40. A study of most areas of Borno show that the Christians are the majority. unfortunately the political power lies in the hands of the muslim minority, a fact we must work hard to change.
I once saw a report about my community stating that my community had a 30% muslim population, in a place where there is not a single mosque.
Politics / Re: Are Nairalanders Representative Of Nigerians? by thelastpope10: 4:31pm On Jun 02, 2013
bobthebuilder99:

Interesting thing about CPC is that they received 30% of the vote with virtually no political structure. Half the North was still allied to PDP in 2011, but Buhari still won a lot of votes. If the Northerners from the PDP defect to APC, it won't be an easy race. Also have to take into account that the various opposition parties will all be throwing their weight behind the same candidates.

Personally, the only thing I want is economic development. Fashola seems like the best politician for delivering that. Whatever party he runs on, he will have my support.

Believe me when I say you took this part unconciously from the ACN/CPC propaganda. The fight for the presidency has never been about good governance. That is something you have to understand. So when you say CPC got 30%, you have to understand the politics at play. CPC in a sense didnt get 30%. What got 30% was the concept of returning the power back to the north. But the big problem for the north itself is that they are even more fragmented today than the south. That is why some of us will continue to laugh at those who keep referring to the north as a block vote region. The north will never have a block vote again. Apart from the middle belt who have gone their own way, the Christian north is completely divided from the Muslim north. The kanuris are divided from the fulanis and so on. The Ombaste incident should give you an idea. There are a lot of angry minorities in the north. Actually, the Fulanis are a small number but have rulled over other tribes for too long.

The Nigerian politics is complex. Most NLs are social media people who like to follow the social media trend which, a lot of times, is disconnected from reality. An example is when you hear people saying Amaechi will defeat GEJ in Rivers state. Edo state for example is an ACN controlled state but GEJ will always win the votes there. That is how Nigeria works. The truth is that anybody trying to deny the existence of tribalism and claiming those supporting GEJ are being tribal is far from reality. Nigeria has always been rulled by tribalism. Buhari put Ekweme in jail and kept Shagari who was president in a hotel. That is Nigeria for you.

The summery of Nigeria is this: The south, especially the SS and SE and now the MD, feels the north have ruled over them for too long and that the north and SW have been very tribalistic. That opinion resonates all over the SS, SE and MB. That opinion is corroborated by the federal character concept and the lopsided favouratism towards the Hausa/Fulani and Yorubas since the 70s. That is why a Buhari candidacy will never work. Now, these regions want their liberation and you cannot persuade them not to seek it. The biggest challenge APC will face is the choice of a presidential candidate. If they choose a core northerner, they will never get the SS, SE, MB and at least 60% of SW votes. There is no northerner out there right now that can command such votes from those regions. If they choose a SW person like Fashola, they would not get the SS, SE and MB votes required. They will not get a block vote from the NE or NW because those regions are only interested in gettting the presidency and would vote the party at the center (PDP) again if they dont get the presidential ticket. The only person that is still likely to bridge the deadlock is a minority like GEJ. People saying northern govs will join APC are funny. Why will they join APC and loose the influence they have built in PDP over the years? Something they wont get in APC, under Buhari and Tinubu? It doesnt work that way. Like I said in a previous thread, the worst case scenario is that the northern politicians will support GEJ again with some kind of arrangement to have their turn in 2019. That is what a worst case scenario will look like

There is a reason GEJ made Anenih the BOT chairman. Not because he loves Anenih but because of the power tussle in PDP. OBJ has no base. You do not have a voice when you have no base. Add that to the fact that the sitting president is the leader of the party, then you will see why OBJ is angry. OBJ's biggest anger is that GEJ is not taking orders from him. He admitted that with his statement that you can help somebody get there but you cannot help him do what he is supposed to do. That is simply saying, GEJ is no longer listening to my advise and that is a plus to GEJ!

How can a divided NGF be a win for Amaechi or the APC? What a daft statement! A divided NGF is a bigger win for GEJ than even a united NGF with Jang in charge. These ACN peeps are not smart politicians. They think that winning on social media is winning in reality. What really got me cracking in the whole statement is the allusion that the NGF election will be a reflection of voting pattern come 2015. As we speak, these guys dont even have any serious offices in at least 15 states and this is June 2013, yet they claim an NGF election is a reflection of voting come 2015. Most people in Nigeria dont even know the names of up to 10 govs. The Amaechi the are talking about will not add any vote to APC from his region. How is all this a win for APC or Amaechi? This is really delusional and laughable!

Foreign Affairs / Ghana Scraps Fuel Subsidy To Reduce Budget Deficit by thelastpope10: 12:44am On Jun 02, 2013
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) said in a statement on Friday that the decision followed a government directive to achieve full pass-through petroleum products prices in the West African cocoa, gold and oil exporter.

“By this, the government has completely removed subsidies on petrol, gas oil and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), which form about 95 percent of domestic (petroleum) products, effective 1st June,” NPA chief executive Alex Mould told Reuters after the announcement.

The measure will result in an immediate 3 percent hike in petrol and LPG, while diesel fuel will increase 2 percent.

Mould said the policy would be reviewed after two weeks and any fluctuations in international crude oil prices would be passed on to the consumer.

Ghana’s economy has been one of the world’s fastest growing since oil production started in 2010, but the government has struggled to steady its cedi currency and contain deficit spending.

The 2012 deficit reached 12.1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), almost double the target of 6.7 percent, due to excess public sector wages, a shortfall in projected tax revenue and rising costs for fuel subsidies.

The cost of subsidies last year reached one billion cedis ($500 million) and was expected to rise to 2.4 billion cedis this year, before the NPA raised prices in February.

Ghana has set a 2013 deficit target of 9 percent of GDP.

Like several other countries in West and Central Africa, Ghana had planned to cut swelling fuel subsidies last year following pressure from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, who see them as wasteful and inefficient.

But the measures were delayed ahead of national elections in December which confirmed President John Dramani Mahama in office after the unexpected death in July of his predecessor, John Atta Mills.
