The recent twist of events in our nation's democracy, has been nothing but a sordid sight to behold. As the brickbats between the presidency and the judiciary arm threatens to put our nation on the boil. It's quite unfortunate however, that the media space is once again repleted with the usual narratives of varying degrees of sentimental colouration in the different reactions, which keep taking us many steps backward. And in the middle of all these, lies the ordinary Nigerian, who has allowed himself to be used as a pawn in the chess game of our political elites, and yet the real questions are staring us all in the face, with no one seeking to find answers.
Having seen and listened to the opinion of many on the contentious issue, both from the experts in the law profession and the social critics on different fora. It seems there's a divided opinion based on the leaning of the commentator, and whether wrong or right, everyone has got a reason for choosing their stance on the issue.
What is most baffling however, is the speed with which the ordinary Nigerian who neither has the facts, nor has anything to gain, quickly rose in the defence of either of the waring parties, premising their arguments solely on a sentimental basis, which continues to show how degenerated our value system has become over time. Defending a man who has flouted the provision of the constitution just because you dislike the accuser, is too mediocre. And supporting a man purely based on his supposed integrity, without ever reasoning if his actions are right or wrong is likewise foolhardy.
It's hightine we elevated our arguments beyond the level of the trivialist, and start to critically look into the substance of the issues, instead of analysing the personalities involved.
This issue has once again thrown up the lacuna in the constitution that binds us together as a nation, and yet no one is talking about it. This same constitution that has provided a safe haven for the high and mighty, while the ordinary man rot away in abject penury, completely lacks a well defined system of justice, and those at the top of the pyramids blatantly take advantage.
It's time the people of this country started asking the right questions, and demanding the right thing be done, irrespective of the personalities involved. We need to keep pushing for a better Nigeria, and stop being used as a tool to achieve political gains by desperate and egocentric individuals.

Politics / Taking Back The Keys To Our Future By Matthew Adewole by theradicalist(m): 10:39pm On Oct 24, 2017
When a man has nothing to hold on to in life, what is left to him is hope, so they say. But what happens to a man who has been deprived of hope? Perhaps, the consequences would be quite fatal. So is the situation which a common man in Nigeria finds himself today,.

Down memory lane, the journey of our country Nigeria has been all but smooth, having endured the torment of imperialism for a long time, being subject to slavery in one's own land, and suffering from different form of oppression in the hands of our old Masters, but even in the face of all these, the then nationalists thought it good, that we are ready for self governance. This gives a glimmer of hope to the common man then, probably the citizenry as at then, must have envisaged a future with endless possibilities and equal opportunities for all.

After all the negotiations and agitation brouhaha, we eventually got the freedom, which some today still believed we were given on "a platter of gold". At independence, the hope of the ordinary Nigerians hit the ceiling, dreams were dreamt, and promises were made, not only for those who were fortunate to be around at the time, but also to the child unborn.
it all seem so perfect in the beginning, that we became one of the new brides of the world, in terms of economic potentials and tourist destination. However, the dreams was short lived, as the Intrigues of ethnocentric and egocentric politicking, was outweigh by a series of coup and counter coups, which has eventually brought us to where we are today.

Nigerians today, have been emotionally battered , intellectually restrained and financially incapacitated by the different government that has attained the helms of power in this country.
These same people we refer to as leaders have been able to successfully divide the ordinary people of the country along, ethnic and religious lines, just for their selfish political ambitions, fueling tension and animosity in the land, while they meet at various functions, laughing, chatting away and throwing crumbs at the hunger stricken populace, of course they know quite well , that the best way to suppress the people is by keeping them dusunited.

The main keys to the development of human lives, had been left to die a natural death in the country,. Key sectors of the economy, like education, health and power has been in a state of complete comatose for years, and successive government have only been able to successfully dug the grave even more deeper, in what seems like a deliberate attempt to control and manipulate the minds of the people.
It is however time to stand up and be counted to make our voices known, and to fight for what collectively belongs to us.

Is it really impossible to have a stable power supply in this country?
Why does our leaders, fly abroad just for mere check ups? Do we not have good medical practitioners in this country or it's just a lack of medical facilities?
Why has our universities find it so hard, if not impossible to make it into the top 500 schools in the world?

The political elites in this country have milked this country dry already, thereby killing the dreams of many of the common man, but that which we have left is our hope and if we do not stand for ourselves our hope would be taken away from us, and when this happens what shall we hold on to?

It's time to rise Nigerians, and with collective effort, shunning all ethnic and religious beacon, fight for what is collectively ours. The time is now and me and you must stand to be counted.
