Science/Technology / Razer Claims Its New Blade 15 Is The ‘thinnest’ 15-inch RTX Gaming Laptop by thommascollier: 11:15pm On May 14, 2021
Razer has just announced new versions of its Blade 15 workhorse gaming laptop, complete with some of the biggest changes to the lineup in some time.

Like many other laptops announced today, the new Blade 15 Advanced features Intel’s 11th Gen H-series processors and Nvidia’s RTX 30-series graphics chips, with up to a Core i9 11900H (2.5GHz base clock, 4.9GHz boost clock), an RTX 3080 GPU with 16GB of video memory (Razer declined to share the total graphics power ahead of publishing), and a 4K touchscreen.

The most welcome improvement might be the new fingerprint-resistant coating making its way to all of these new models. I can’t imagine that it’ll eliminate fingerprints altogether, but this should address one of the biggest annoyances with the prior models. The Windows Hello webcam is getting bumped up to 1080p resolution (from 720p), and Razer claims the trackpads have improved palm rejection.

For the new design, Razer managed to shave off a little more than a millimeter from the thickness of the Blade 15 Advanced, coming in at 15.8mm thick. Razer claims that it’s the smallest 15-inch gaming laptop with RTX graphics and is 17 percent smaller by dimensions compared to the MSI GS66 Stealth. This size reduction applies only to the starting model that has the RTX 3060, though. Thinner might sound more appealing, but it isn’t usually better for gaming performance. Nvidia allows OEMs like Razer to choose the wattage and clock speed of the GPU based on their laptop designs, and generally speaking, the thinner the laptop is, the worse it can be running games compared to thicker laptops that typically allow for bigger cooling systems.

The higher-specced options are thicker than this 15.8mm model, but that’s roughly the same thickness as the previous generation. The width and depth of these machines debuting today are also unchanged from the previous gen at 355 and 235mm (13.98 and 9.25 inches), respectively.

The latest (and thinnest) Blade 15 Advanced starts at $2,299, and this model has a 240Hz QHD IPS panel with 2.5ms response time and 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut. It has an octa-core Intel Core i7-11800H processor, the RTX 3060 GPU with 8GB of video memory, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 3,200MHz. This thinner model has a 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD that supports PCIe 4.0 for faster read / write and transfer speeds and a 65Wh battery. All other Advanced models have a 80Wh battery.

The selection of ports across the Advanced lineup is similar but not exactly the same as the models released earlier in 2021. The most notable exceptions are the two new Thunderbolt 4 ports. In addition, you’ll find an UHS-III SD card reader, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, a headphone jack, and an HDMI 2.1 port. Aside from that, all new Blade 15 models support Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, 20V charging via USB-C.

The first commercial-scale offshore wind project in the US just got the green light from the Biden administration. The approval has the potential to dramatically grow the nation’s wind energy sector after years of regulatory limbo for proposed offshore projects.

The Interior Department (DOI) granted the Vineyard Wind project permission to install up to 84 turbines off the coast of Massachusetts. Once completed, the project will be able to generate up to 800 megawatts (MW), enough electricity for 400,000 homes. That’s a dramatic scaling up of existing offshore wind capacity in the US. There are currently only two small developments off the East Coast and those can only generate a combined 42 megawatts of electricity.

The Biden administration has big ambitions for offshore wind. It set a goal of getting 30,000 MW of energy from offshore wind by 2030. That’s part of a bigger plan to tackle climate change by reaching 100 percent clean electricity by 2035.

“A clean energy future is within our grasp in the United States. The approval of this project is an important step toward advancing the Administration’s goals to create good-paying union jobs while combatting climate change and powering our nation,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement.

Europe is already ahead of the game, with more than 25,000 MW of offshore wind capacity now. Globally, wind and solar energy are taking off when it comes to electricity generation. New renewable energy capacity made up 90 percent of the global power sector’s growth in 2020 and is expected to do so again in 2021 and 2022, according to a market update released today by the International Energy Agency.

Vineyard Wind first submitted its construction and operations plan for federal approval in 2017, although plans for the project have been in the works since 2009. Now that the project has been greenlit, it’s expected to be operational by 2023, according to the project’s developers, Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

Vineyard Wind receiving a Record of Decision from the DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is likely a good sign for more than a dozen other offshore wind projects awaiting federal approval. It’s good news for adjacent industries, too, including shipbuilding. There’s been a “chicken and egg” situation for the offshore wind industry: it needs specialized vessels to construct new projects, but shipbuilders were hesitant to invest in new builds until major projects received permits to move forward. Vineyard Wind’s approval could be wind in the sails to get both industries really moving.

Opera has just announced that it’s buying YoYo Games, the company that builds GameMaker, a super-advanced piece of software specifically built to allow developers to create their own games for desktop, mobile, web, and consoles.

In case you’re wondering what a browser has to do with a gaming development platform, the answer is pretty much Opera GX.

Launched not a long time ago, Opera GX is a browser specifically built for gamers, coming with limiters specifically aimed at CPU, RAM, and network usage to make sure you can still play games while browsing the web.

So how will the future of Opera change now that its parent company purchased YoYo Games? The browser and the world of gaming would mix even more, it seems, with the company explained in a statement that it’s founding Opera Gaming, a new division whose role is to expand the browser’s capabilities into the world of gaming.
More gaming, more browsing

“We are very excited to start working with the team at YoYo Games,” said Krystian Kolondra, EVP Browsers at Opera. “We see the platform as being an ideal acquisition to complement our global ambitions in gaming, along with our Opera GX gaming browser. We look forward to further growing Opera GX and to driving the growth of GameMaker, making it more accessible to novice users and developing it into the world’s leading 2D game engine used by commercial studios. We are also thrilled to find future synergies between YoYo Games’ products and Opera GX.”

As part of the deal, YoYo Games will continue to be based in Dundee, Scotland, and General Manager Stuart Poole and Technical Lead Russell Kay will continue to be involved in the future of the company.

More information is likely to be shared soon as the gaming side of Opera evolves.

Why put a person in a dangerous situation when a robot can do it for them?

In recent years, drones have moved from being a rarity in infrastructure inspections to becoming common. Dams, bridges and other systems need regular checkups to guarantee there are no dangerous cracks or other damage. Traditionally, these operations require professionals rappelling down. If you provide them with drones, these inspections become safer, more accurate and more affordable, which means that teams can perform more.
"Drones are able to see things and get to certain areas that a traditional rope inspection might not allow due to access constraints," says Cameron Schaefer, the transportation data acquisition lead at HDR, a company specializing in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services that has been using drones for the past three years. The program has grown from five pilots to more than 20, trained to deal with situations like high winds or emergency landings.

The needs of the operation will determine the planning and the hardware used. In some processes, simple consumer devices may be enough, while others require specialized equipment. Capturing 8,000 images will deliver a higher precision than 2,000, and some drones are well suited for certain areas but very limited in others.

Take the inspection of Diablo Dam in northern Washington state, for example. Last summer, HDR took its drones to complement the assessment of this 389 foot-tall structure, which supplies Seattle with electricity. The result was more than 82 million data points that create a 3D representation, documenting the condition of the dam and the areas that need repair.

The team tied the images captured by the drone to ground-control data and engineering drawings to create a virtual model of the dam that can be updated later with additional data -- including information from other technologies, such as ground-penetrating radar. This way, the model can become more effective over time, and the team can anticipate the structural repairs that will be needed using machine learning and predictive analysis.
The result, says Schaefer, it's not only an increase in safety: "It's an increase in quality. It's an increase in accuracy. It's an increase in historical monitoring."

There’s a lot going on in the Microsoft Edge world these days. Microsoft, for example, has been super-busy in the last few hours to deal with a bug causing the browser to crash when users typed something in the address bar, all because of the suggestions that are displayed in the app.

And as it turns out, when not fixing critical issues, the dev team is hard at work on bringing new functionality to the browser, as @Leopeva64 has recently discovered another new cool thing coming to Edge.

It’s a tab preview feature, something that we’ve already seen in Google Chrome and which is now being prepared for Microsoft Edge too.

The latest version of the Canary build, which is 86.0.593.0, comes with the very first public release of this tab preview feature, allowing users to try it out before it makes its way to the rest of the Edge versions.

Interestingly enough, this looks like a slightly different implementation of the tab previews, and @Leopeva64, who has previously discovered other new features coming to desktop browsers, spotted some differences.

“It's clear that this is the Microsoft's implementation because in Chrome the card with the title of the page is at the top, currently the feature has some bugs but that is to be expected,” the Twitter user explains in a message posted a few hours ago.

As to when this feature is supposed to make its way to the production builds of Microsoft Edge is something that is too early to anticipate, but the good news is that anyone can try it out right now in Canary. Some bugs do exist, that’s true, but this is nothing surprising given it’s just the first public test of the new feature and it’s the Canary channel, the whole thing kind of makes sense.

Microsoft Edge has recently managed to become the second most-used desktop browser in the world after surpassing Mozilla Firefox thanks to a massive growth in the latest few months.

Needless to say, this is also the result of Microsoft Edge being offered as the recommended choice on Windows 10, the world’s number one desktop operating system, but at the same time, it’s very clear that the migration to the Chromium engine is also paying off in the long term.

At this point, Microsoft Edge already comes with a feature package that’s similar to the one of Google Chrome, so some of those who previously used Google’s browser are now making the switch to Microsoft’s application.

But the good news going forward is that Microsoft is also working on a series of new features in the coming months, and today we’re going to have a look at what’s to come for the new default Windows 10 browser. First and foremost, Microsoft says it’s now planning to “Bring the Ask Cortana feature” that was originally available in Microsoft Edge legacy to the new Chromium browser. At first, this feature was marked as “in discussion,” so it’s now labeled as planned, which means it should make its debut in the browser at some point in the future.

Certainly, it’ll take some time before this happens, but it’s still good news that it’s coming to all users on Windows 10, especially given Cortana is bundled with the OS. It goes without saying this feature will be exclusive to the Windows 10 version of the browser, as Microsoft’s digital assistant is not available on macOS and Linux (which will soon get Microsoft Edge too).

Microsoft has just announced the world’s first open source platform for differential privacy, which is powered by the OpenDP Initiative developed by a team of researchers from Harvard.

The new platform, which is supposed to enable researchers to preserve privacy when analyzing datasets, the company explains in an announcement this week.

Microsoft says that beginning today, a royalty-free license under its differential privacy patents is available for anyone who wants to use the platform for data analysis.

More specifically, the open-source platform for differential privacy makes it possible to look into data from customers without actually exposing the privacy of an individual. The accuracy of the analysis isn’t affected in any way, Microsoft says.

“Through these mechanisms, differential privacy protects personally identifiable information by preventing it from appearing in data analysis altogether. It further masks the contribution of an individual, essentially rendering it impossible to infer any information specific to any particular person,­ including whether the dataset utilized that individual’s information at all,” the software giant explains.

“As a result, outputs from data computations, including analytics and machine learning, do not reveal private information from the underlying data, which opens the door for researchers to harness and share massive quantities of data in a manner and scale never seen before.”

The work on the project started many months ago, and Microsoft says that its team and the Harvard researchers have been trying to build this platform for nearly a year, just to make sure that everything is running just as intended.

The open-source nature of the platform allows anyone to validate the implementation, while also enabling developers and researchers to further contribute to its development, thus improving the technology even further in the long term.

Both the differential privacy platform and the algorithms used to power the whole thing are now listed on GitHub for testing, building, and support.
