Health / Man Survives Steel Rod Through His Head by ThunderNews24: 5:34pm On Aug 18, 2012
A Brazilian construction worker in Rio de Janeiro has had a "miraculous" escape after he was rushed to hospital with a steel pole through his brain.

The six-foot (two-metre) metal rod fell from the fifth floor of a building Eduardo Leite was working on and went straight through the 24-year-old's hard hat.

He was taken to Miguel Couto Hospital with one end of the rod sticking out of the top of his head and the other protruding from between his eyes.

Mr Leite's wife, Lilian Regina da Silva Costa, said: "They told me he was laying down (in the ambulance) with the bar pointing upward.

"He was holding it and his face covered in blood. His look was as if nothing had happened. When he arrived he told the doctors he wasn't feeling anything, no pain, nothing. It's unbelievable."

Dr Luiz Aleandre Essinger, who treated Mr Leite, said: "It is a very uncommon injury this type of trauma, a steel rod that goes through the patient's brain.

"It enters through the top of the head and goes out between the eyes. The fact that the patient arrived here lucid and talking is incredible."

Doctors removed the rod during a five-hour operation and Mr Leite was able to speak, eat and move his arms and legs afterwards, the hospital said.

Ruy Monteiro, the head of neurosurgery, told the Globo TV network he escaped losing his eye and becoming paralysed down the left side of his body by mere centimetres.

Family / East Africa: Prostitution In Juba, The Inside Story – Thunder News 24 by ThunderNews24: 9:24pm On Aug 12, 2012
Phostine Anyango tossed and turned in her sleep. She was unable to sleep. She agonised the whole night about her future. The mother of four beautiful children was about to make a decision that would dramatically change her life.

Was she willing to abandon her nine-year marriage in search of riches in Juba, South Sudan?

She was jobless. Her husband was a casual labourer. Life in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest slums was unbearable. She recalled almost tearfully the days she used to sell doughnuts. Those were hard and tough times. Today, her children were out of school. She had to end their poverty-stricken life. Her elder sister Auma resides in Juba where she engages in prostitution. She had put up a major argument for Anyango to join her.

For days, Anyango tearfully agonised. But each day she stared at the empty stove and looked into her children’s hungry eyes, she got lured. Eventually she decided to travel to the newfound land of opportunities. Auma, a seasoned prostitute, had perfected the art. She was even constructing a stone house at her rural home in Kisumu from her proceeds. Prostitution in Juba, says Auma, is very lucrative. She is able to target the crème de la crème with absolute ease.

Computers / Unseen Apple Macintosh 1983 Commercial Rediscovered – Thunder News 24 by ThunderNews24: 7:48pm On Aug 12, 2012
A never-broadcast advert for the 1983 Macintosh computer has been posted online by one of the original team

The 1983 film was deemed too self-congratulatory by Apple, who consequently only used it for their own sales conferences.

The short clip includes the original creators of the Mac, and is described on YouTube as “Snippets from interviews with members of the original Macintosh design team, recorded in October 1983 for projected TV commercials that were never used. Featuring Burrell Smith, Andy Hertzfeld, George Crow, Bill Atkinson and Mike Murray.”

The film was first posted by Hertzfeld, who designed much of the Mac user interface, on Google+. Smith designed the Mac motherboard.

In the film, the contributors say “We designed the Macintosh because we wanted one for ourselves and we couldn’t get one”.

One claims, “Mac is an extension of who we are.”

In a look forward to Steve Jobs’ keynote demonstrations of the popular computers, one contributor also says, “Demonstrating a Macintosh is the only way to do it; if I can get you to sit in front of one, you won’t let go of it. We were just trying to make something incredibly great and I think we did”.

Although the 1983 film did not meet with Apple’s approval, the firm went on to produce some of the most successful adverts of the early 21st-century, including the silhouetted iPod commercials.

Sports / African Nations Should Bid For 2024 Games- UK Minister by ThunderNews24: 7:10am On Aug 11, 2012
LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson encouraged African nations to bid to host the 2024 Olympics, saying on Saturday the Games should not be the preserve of Western nations and the rich.

Football

South Africa burst onto the international sports scene in 2010 when it hosted the soccer World Cup, and the continent’s runners dominate long-distance events.

But an African nation has yet to host the Olympics.

“I am a firm believer that the Olympics should not just be restricted to western Europe, to the Americas, to the prosperous nations of the Far East,” Robertson told Reuters at a National Olympic Committees of Africa event.

“That’s one of the most exciting things about Rio (the 2016 Olympic host city). And I would very much like to see the Olympics in future years go to the continent of Africa.”

No African city is on the shortlist to host 2020, the winner of which is due to be announced in 2013, after the few who proposed making a bid failed to follow through.

But Casablanca, in Morocco; Durban, in South Africa; and Alexandria, in Egypt, are being touted as possible bidders for 2024.

“I very much hope that African nations will bid in 2024,” Robertson said at the Africa Village hospitality and cultural arena, in London’s Hyde Park.

Family / Woman Pregnant For Her Step-son - Nawaoooooo by ThunderNews24: 6:31am On Aug 11, 2012
My name is Olajumoke , I’m 35 years old and I’ve been married for the past 17 years. For 17 years I’ve been praying for the fruit of the womb. I and my husband have been to different hospitals for medical check up, but all to No avail. The Doctors said we are both fertile (meaning we can Both make babies).I married my husband at age 18 while I was still a virgin. My husband(Joshua) has always been there for me in everything, understanding and supportive in our trying times. About 2 years ago, my childhood friend advised me on what to do…following her advice I remembered “Bayo” my 22 years old house help.continue for full story…Bayo has been with us since he was 8 years old, we treated him as if he was ours. I started talking to him about his personal life. Few months later, my husband traveled to his home town to see his people, so I utilized the opportunity!

I locked Bayo in my room and begged him to have s*x with me,He refused at first, then I threatened him that I would Send him back to d village….he later agreed, so we had s*x 5 times b4 day break! The next day my husband came back

13days later, I Became pregnant, unknowing to Bayo that I was pregnant, I gave him 1million naira, told him to take d money and Go back to the village……..the lil chap was Gratefully satisfied!

I eventually told my husband that I was pregnant and he instantly became the most happiest person in the world, he called his mother, updated them about the news and they started buying kid clothing and Toys. Few months later we did scan and the doctors told us that it was twin. Glory be to God, I gave birth to taiwo(female) and kehinde(male).

2 days ago, my husband woke me up in d middle of the night, held me close to his arms, looked into my eyes, and asked me “Jumoke, who is the father of our kids” I was shocked, scared that he must have known some how, I just knew he had known because of d way he asked me, I didn’t know what to say, I was so shy bcus I knew I’ve betrayed his trust, I looked at his eyes and I burst into tears…….. he then told me “jumoke, before u start talking, I have a confession to make” I cleaned my face and sat upright.

he went ahead and told me how he had Unprotected s*x with a girl in his village and contacted STD before he got married, and how he didn’t treat it for a very long time, that eventually when he went to the hospital, the doctors told him that the std he didn’t treat ontime had made him sterile(can’t impregnate a woman) He said he treated the STD b4 he got married to me, and he has always known that he was sterile, and that all those test we’ve been doing that he has been paying the doctors to give me a wrong result.

He also added that the woman he had s*x with back then got pregnant and the child is BAYO our house help. he also went ahead by saying that he has always wanted to tell me to look for someone to impregnate me but he just didn’t have the balls to do so. But now that I have done it,he’ll like to know who d father is. “I fainted” What do u think Jumoke should say if she finally gain consciousness?
