Sports / Super Eagles’ Nwabali Battles South Africa’s Williams For Best Goalkeeper by Tickrose: 5:21pm On Feb 04, 2024

The Golden Glove at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will be contested between Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and Ronwen Williams of South Africa.

Both Nwabali and Williams have kept clean sheets in their last four matches and will face each other in the semi-finals.

The only goal Nwabali conceded at the tournament, was in the Super Eagles opening 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea.

Williams let in two goals for Bafana Bafana when they lost 2-0 to Mali in their first fixture.

Interestingly, both goalkeepers play in South Africa. Nwabali represents Chippa United while Williams turns out for Mamelodi Sundowns.

As it stands, both stoppers have four clean sheets, more than any other keeper has been able to secure in Ivory Coast.

Sports / Super Eagles Pay Tribute To Sam Okwaraji by Tickrose: 10:25pm On Feb 02, 2024

The Super Eagles on Friday paid tribute to late Samuel Okwaraji after Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final 1-0 win over Angola.

Super Eagles, in a tweet via its X account after Nigeria defeated Angola in the AFCON last-8, said Okwaraji’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“Today’s victory over Angola is a poignant reminder of the adamant spirit of Nigerian football,” Super Eagles tweeted.

“As we celebrate this triumph, we also honour the memory of late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, who tragically left us while playing against Angola 35 years ago.

“His passion for the game and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Samuel Okwaraji, your legacy lives on. #WeRememberOkwaraji #RIP.”

InfoWhat reports that Okwaraji slumped on the pitch and died during an encounter against Angola at the Main Bowl of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on August 12, 1989.

The sad incident happened 77 minutes into the match, just 13 minutes to the final whistle.

The Nigeria team (then Green Eagles) were thrown into disarray, while the Angola team forgot the competition and joined in the futile attempts to revive Okwaraji.

An autopsy later revealed Okwaraji died from high blood pressure-induced congestive heart failure.

Sports / Nigeria’s Nwabali Breaks 44-year Record After Super Eagles’ 1-0 Win Over Angola by Tickrose: 10:15pm On Feb 02, 2024

Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali on Friday broke a 44-year record for Super Eagles goalkeepers amid the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

This was possible after Nwabali secured four consecutive clean sheets in a major tournament (AFCON).

The Chippa United goalkeeper has surpassed Best Ogedegbe’s 1980 record and Alloy Agu’s 1990 3-game streak for Super Eagles after keeping a clean sheet against Angola at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

He helped Jose Peseiro’s men to qualify for the semi-final of the AFCON after Nigeria defeated Angola 1-0 in the quarter-final, thanks to Ademola Lookman’s goal.

Prior to the Angola game, Nwabali had kept clean sheets against Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau and now Angola.

He has played five games and conceded only one goal against Equatorial Guinea.

Nwabali will hope to continue his impressive record when Nigeria face the winner between South Africa and Cape Verde in the last-4.

Sports / CAF Takes Super Eagles Striker, Osimhen For Drug Test by Tickrose: 12:01pm On Jan 29, 2024

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has been selected by the Confederation of African Football, CAF, for random drug tests at the tournament.

A source told INFOWHAT that Osimhen was tested against hosts, Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon.

“(He was) tested against Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon. That is twice in four games,” the source said.

The Napoli striker was fouled for the penalty that gave Nigeria a 1-0 win over the Ivorians.

Osimhen then put in a ‘battering ram’ performance against the Indomitable Lions as they won 2-0 in a last-16 clash on Sunday.

He set up the first goal for Ademola Lookman and was a constant menace for the Cameroonians, before he was replaced by Paul Onuachu late in the game.

Osimhen’s only goal came in the 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their first fixtures.

The current CAF Player of the Year is expected to lead the line for the three-time champions when they face Angola in the quarter-finals this week.

Sports / Lookman Is Wary Of Angola's Team by Tickrose: 11:52am On Jan 29, 2024

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman says the team will be up for the battle against Angola.

Nigeria will face the Black Antelopes in the quarter-finals at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday.

The encounter will take place at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.

Angola have enjoyed a stellar campaign so far in Cote d’Ivoire, winning three and drawing one of their four games.

Lookman, who scored a brace in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 win against Cameroon on Saturday, stated that they will prepare very well for the game.

“Angola are a good team. We’ll analyze them and prepare. The further you go, the tougher it gets so we’ll take it game by game,” Lookman told reporters.

Sports / AFCON 2023: I Want To Give Nigeria Something To Remember – Osimhen by Tickrose: 11:38am On Jan 29, 2024

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has said he wants to give Nigeria something to remember amid the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Ivory Coast.

Osimhen has been one of the standout performers in the AFCON as he helped Jose Peseiro’s men reach the quarter-finals.

The Napoli attacker troubled the Cameroonian defence during the last-16 encounter over the weekend as he set up Ademola Lookman for Nigeria’s first goal.

The 25-year-old has only scored one goal in the AFCON which was against Equatorial Guinea.

“I want to win something with this great squad,” Osimhen was quoted by The Guardian UK reporter Osasu Obayiuwana as saying.

“I want to give Nigeria something that they will remember. I’m giving everything to come home with the [AFCON] trophy.”

Osimhen will hope to lead Nigeria to victory when they face Angola in the last-8.

Sports / Nigeria Vs Cameroon Prediction, Odds, Expert Football Betting Tips by Tickrose: 9:40am On Jan 27, 2024

Nigeria and Cameroon, two teams who have skirted past their flaws to reach the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage, now hope to capitalise on each others' weaknesses as they meet in the Round of 16.

Both sides suffered setbacks early in the competition. Nigeria fell 2-0 in their pre-tournament friendly to Guinea before a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea opened their group stage slate. Yet they bounced back to beat both Guinea-Bissau and hosts Ivory Coast by 1-0 scores to advance.

Cameroon were pegged back in their first two group matches, drawing 1-1 with Guinea before being comprehensively beaten by Senegal 3-1. Yet a 90th minute winner by Chris Woo to squeak past Gambia 3-2 in the finale gave the Indomitable Lions a knockout stage spot at the death.

Sports / Gerbot Rohr Gives Current Super Eagles Manager Tips On How To Win Cameroon by Tickrose: 10:11pm On Jan 26, 2024

Former Nigeria head coach, Gernot Rohr, has given the Super Eagles players and coaches tips on how to defeat Cameroon in their round of 16 clash on Saturday.

The Indomitable Lions would be looking to secure a first AFCON win against the Eagles since the 2000 edition co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria.

At the 2004 tournament, the Eagles came from a goal down to beat the Lions 2-1.

The Eagles beat Cameroon 3-2 in the round of 16 at the 2019 AFCON,Rohr was manager then and has come out to advice his former players on what to do against Cameroon.

“They should believe in their strength, they can do it like they did in 2019,” Rohr said in a video interview posted on former BBC reporter and Guardian writer Osasu Obayiuwana’s X handle.
“Cameroon had problems, it was not easy in their first two group games. Their match against Gambia was a crazy one because at some point you will think it’s finished when they were down 2-1 with five minutes left.
“At the 2021 AFCON they were down 3-0 against Burkina Faso and in 10 minutes they came back to 3-3, which means the Cameroonian players never accept defeat, they still believe, they are strong mentally and they have fighting spirit.
“But Nigeria also have fighting spirit just like we did against Cameroon in 2019. Even if you are down by one or two goals you can come back and win. It’s possible, it’s a question of the spirit, a question of mental strength, of discipline, solidarity, fighting spirit.
“Most of the Nigerian players I know them very well they have these qualities and can do it, also they have the best player in Africa and I’m sure they will qualify.“

Rohr, however, admitted that it would be a tough encounter for the Eagles.

”It will be difficult because Cameroon is becoming strong again especially in the win against Gambia in the final minutes but they still have problems, defensive problems, also problems inside the group, goalkeeping issue.“

Business / Saudi Arabia To Change Alcohol Rules As It Opens First Alcohol Shop by Tickrose: 10:09pm On Jan 25, 2024

Saudi Arabia has revealed new rules on alcohol as it prepares to open the first-ever liquor store in the capital, Riyadh.

Alcohol sale and consumption in Saudi Arabia is strictly forbidden, and is punishable by lashes, deportations, fines and imprisonment.

The rules regulating alcohol quotas for non-Muslim diplomatic missions are being introduced to “counter the illicit trade of alcohol goods,” the governmental Center of International Communication (CIC) said in a statement.

According to Reuters who released the report, the first alcohol store in the capital Riyadh will serve exclusively non-Muslim diplomats.

The CIC responding to the report said that a “new process will focus on allocating specific quantities of alcohol goods when entering the Kingdom to put an end to the previous unregulated process that caused an uncontrolled exchange of such goods in the Kingdom.”

The CIC did not clarify if a shop will be opened but said the new “regulatory framework has been introduced to counter the illicit trade of alcohol goods and products received by diplomatic missions,” the CIC said.

Despite the ban on alcohols, Saudi Arabia under Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman has moved towards the remodeling of its tourism industry as part of a grand vision to diversify the economy leading to speculation that it could legalize alcohol in the Kingdom very soon.

Celebrities / Police Arrest Mr Ibu’s Son And Adopted Daughter For Allegedly Stealing N55m by Tickrose: 9:48pm On Jan 25, 2024

The Nigerian Police, through its Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCID), Alagbon, in Ikoyi, Lagos State, has confirmed the arrest of Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, son of comic actor John Okafor aka Mr Ibu and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu, his adopted daughter, for allegedly conspiring and defrauding the actor of the sum of N55 million.

In a press statement released on Thursday, January 25, the department stated that it acted on a petition received from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of the actor’s wife, Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, alleging that two sons of Mr. Ibu conspired with his adopted daughter, Jasmine, to defraud their father.

“On 6th September, 2023, a petition was received from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor wherein one Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, Valentine Okafor, both of whom are sons of Mr. John Ikechukwu Okafor (Alias Ibu) and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu were alleged to have conspired to defraud Mr. Ibu while being on sick bed.Investigation into the case established that as part of efforts to fund his medical bills, Mr. Ibu launched a public fund-raising initiative and attracted donations from his fans, entertainment industry players, and other well-spirited members of the public into a bank account which he publicized and dedicated for the purpose. Mr. Ibu’s wife, Mrs Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor was initially managing the funds to defray the medical bills of Mr. Ibu and sustain the family. However, along the line, the duo of Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu manipulated Mrs Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, took possession of Mr. Ibu’s phone, and hacked into the banking details therein,” the Police said."

Continuing, the FCID Spokesperson, ASP Mayegun Aminat, explained how the duo reinstalled the banking app on the phone belonging to Okafor and transferred the sum of N55m from the donations for the actor’s medical bill. According to the Police, the duo Okafor and Jasmine already had a sham marriage at Ikoyi registry, and had applied for visas to leave the country.

“They thereafter re-installed the mobile banking applications of Mr. Ibu on the phone of Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor preparatory to the perfection of their preconceived fraudulent plans and wiped off the banking applications originally installed on Mr. Ibu’s phone, thereby, taking direct and full charge of banking activities of Mr. Ibu in relation to the funds being donated by members of the public in support of his medicals.Through this fraudulent act, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu started transferring funds from Mr. Ibu’s public fundraising account to Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor’s personal bank with forensic analysis of their illicit financial dealing establishing that a total of fifty five million naira (=N=55M) has been successfully and criminally transferred prior to their arrest and investigation.Investigation also unearthed text messages via WhatsApp between Jasmine Chioma and Daniel Okafor detailing in stage-by-stage how they conspired and hatched their criminal plans. It was also established that the two suspects, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu and Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor had a sham marriage at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry with plans to escape from the country to UK where they intended to settle with their proceeds of crime. They already applied for a UK Visa in furtherance to this plan prior to their arrest,” the statement added."

The FCID, while stating that a sum of N50 million has been recovered from the suspects, added that they have both been charged at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba in Charge No. A/06/2024 for conspiracy and stealing.

“During investigation, the stolen fifty-five million naira (=N=55M) was traced to the Bank Account of Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor wherein it was discovered that they had squandered a total of five million naira (=N=5M) on questionable transactions, while the balance total of fifty million (=N=50M) has been recovered from him.On the strength of evidence, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu have been charged to the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba in Charge No. A/06/2024 for conspiracy and stealing. They were granted bail in the sum of =N= 15m with two sureties in like sum while case was adjourned to 11th March, 2024. Meanwhile the casefile has been forwarded to the Office of Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.”

Politics / Felon Who Attacked Judge During Sentencing Now In Solitary Confinement by Tickrose: 9:13am On Jan 07, 2024

Deobra Redden, the “flying” felon who attacked a Vegas judge has now been hit with more charges and is now placed in solitary confinement.

Source: https://infowhat.ng/news/2024/1/felon-who-attacked-judge-during-sentencing-now-in-solitary-confinement-2.html

Deobra Redden was moved to a solo cell following his violent outburst where he leapt over the bench at Judge Mary Kay Holthus earlier this week, punching her in the head and pulling her hair while court staffers rushed to her aid.

This occurred while he was in court for a previous conviction for attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. His attorney had asked Judge Holthus for parole, but she chose to sentence the 3-time felon instead which set him off and led to the attack.

Redden has been classified as a "2C" inmate, which is the most restrictive classification in the Clark County Jail.

This means Redden is solo in a cell, without any interactions with other inmates. He also eats alone, inside the cell and has very limited time outside.

Source: https://infowhat.ng/news/2024/1/felon-who-attacked-judge-during-sentencing-now-in-solitary-confinement-2.html

Judge Holthus was unharmed but shaken up by the incident. Another court employee required 25 stitches to close a gash on his head.

Redden has been hit with a slew of new felonies for the attack; including coercion with force or threat of force, extortion, intimidating public officers/others with the use of force, disregard of the safety of person/property, and battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee.
