Richard slowly opened his eyes. The rays of the morning sun were already streaming in through the window. As the events of the previous night came back to him, he looked down at his body and noticed he was still naked. Athena had disappeared sometimes in the night. He vaguely remembered them cuddling after their intense marathon and they had dozed off with her safely in his arms. He got up and walked to the bathroom.

Athena was up and also dressed, ready for work. She was at the kitchen counter with her back to him. She glanced over her shoulder as he walked into the kitchen.

“You’re up early,” he stated.

“Yeah…good morning,” she replied in a rather deadpan tone. She had returned to the cold, dark Athena. The one he held tight and made passionate love to the night before was nowhere to be found.

“I made you a simple breakfast, so you can have something before you go to work,” she said. He glanced at the table at the French toast, eggs, bacon strips and coffee laid out for him. Another thing she hadn't done for him in a very long time - making breakfast. He turned back to her in time to see her walking to the door with her handbag.

“Are you…feeling better today?” he asked.

Athena stopped and turned slightly. She regarded him with a cold, dark stare.

“I can’t be feeling better, but I still have to go to work,” she stated.

“Oh…okay, but just in case-”

“I’m already running late, so please, make sure to clean up after yourself,” she replied.

Her hand paused on the door handle. “And one more thing,” she said without turning, “about yesterday…”

“……”

“Thank you.” Her voice did not betray any emotion. She sounded like she was thanking someone for handing her a newspaper or a cup of coffee. “You saved me from being defiled by that fraud of a therapist…”

“I had to do that…”

“…and you also consoled…comforted me…last night…” her voice had grown a bit softer and her eyes wistful as the events played in her mind once again. She quickly composed herself.

“I’m off to work.” she stepped out.

“Okay. See you in the evening…” but she had already closed the door behind her.
