Health / 5 Habits Of Happiness by Timsawyerr: 1:05pm On Nov 22, 2017
While experts have validated that depression and unhappiness are the leading causes of suicide among people (what other reasons would one readily think of?), it would be useful to embark on a deliberate journey in order to begin living in happiness, especially amidst  mountains of tasks to accomplish, maybe a couple of financial obligations, etc.

Also, Suicide.org (yes, there is such a website), has also published that the most common mental illness observed among people is depression. This means that whether it is deliberate, which we do not need any experts to tell us isn't the case.. unless they tell us that they have conducted a study which has revealed that people are setting out to lose happiness on purpose.

People seem to be struggling with happiness and so here are 5 habits that can be cultivated in order to begin easily helping the situation.

Active Constructive Responding

This refers simply to the ability to engage in a genuine exchange of thoughts with another person. People who cultivate close, meaningful friendships with others, as well as those who form the habit of expressing their genuine thoughts, tend to experience happiness more.

While people who have strong ties with friends and family, and have been committed to spending a quality time with them tend to be happier, it would be ill-advised to become needy and expect every strain of happiness to come from others. A lot of good can be done when we learn to engage ourselves in the things that spell happiness for us.

Acts Of Kindness

Still bordering on the things that help generate happiness, caring for others, which could mean volunteering to perform tasks, or to be a part of an organisation, can have its payment in happiness.

It takes a sense of reason and purpose beyond the things that stir thoughts of depression, i.e, the quest for survival, to volunteer to be a part of an organisation, usually for no immediate personal gain, and to perform acts of kindness for others as well.

Exercise

It would seem as though no conversation on health and life could be held without the topic of exercising, except, of course, the 'fat cutter' drinks that are surfacing everywhere recently...

The Cochrane Review has said, after multiple analyses that there is a connection between exercise and happiness.

Put simply, the research follows recent discoveries made on the brain, linking the overconsumption and retention of excessive sugar to depression. Sugar refers to food, at least to a major extent, exercise burns excess sugars and fats, and there we have it. Happiness.

Meaningful Engagement

Instead of simply performing tasks, more happiness would be realised when one resolves to get things done out of a sense of understanding and belonging. It comes with an inner resolve that we are engaging in tasks that are needful and will be useful in meeting a need.

Use Of One's Strengths

Taking time to celebrate the area that we excel at can help supply some encouragement to take on new areas as well. Engaging in challenging activities that task us yet suit our skills is one good way to achieving this.

While progress is often recorded by pushing to expand the frontiers of our capabilities, appreciating the progress made so far can be a useful tool in realising happiness.

Health / Stress Management: 5 Major Causes Of Stress.. The Most Stressful Will Excite You by Timsawyerr: 12:01pm On Nov 21, 2017
Stress is not as completely abstract as it may come to mind. It is simply the sustained release of 'reactor' hormones due to strenuous circumstances, and so having the knowledge about these situations can help to better deal with them, resulting in the release of the right kind of hormones which induce a more relaxed state. One great method of stress management methods is identifying major stressors around us and instead of groping in the dark as to why we feel tight and uneasy, this will help to create harmony in the precise areas that are inducing a state of stress.

When placed under stress, the body's natural stress management mechanism, known as the fight or flight mechanism, is engaged, resulting in faster heartbeats, higher cortisol and adrenaline levels, etc. It is as though the body were trying to catch up to the expected level of speed and pressure that is expected of it in order to meet the perceived requirements of the stressor. This, however, comes at a price, because this sort of strain (stress) on the nervous may have serious consequences on the body's mental and physical health if sustained.

Stress is the major cause of sleeping disorders (insomnia), it functions to reduce the body's immune system, among other dire effects. Here are some of the high-ranking causes of stress, which identifying can be crucial in effective stress management.

Life Changes

Change is an interesting life process. However, the psyche, and of course, the body, the can be known to take some time in adapting to it. Being aware of the tendency to react to these changes may be vital is stress management.

Some life changes that may induce stress include marriage, pregnancy, increase in financial obligation, a retirement, losing a job, the death of a close relative, as well as the death of a spouse, which is ranked as the number one most stressful life event, according to the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory.

Work

In order state the obvious, this has been placed second here.

The amount of time spent working, the workload on a person's schedule, how one feels about the work that they do, as well as the attitude of the boss can all play roles in the buildup of stress on an individual.

Also included are the distance which a person has to cover to get to a place of work, as well as having a less-than-satisfactory relationship situation with co-workers in the working environment. The mentioned work stressors can, however, be useful in stress management when they are understood and appropriate measures are taken to dispel prevent them.

Relationships

A hint towards this already mentioned within work, having strained relationships can definitely have its effects on stress levels. As a social people, when we engage with people, we tend to form attachments with them, which is why we possess the ability to care beyond our individual selves.

Thus, a sustained, unresolved strain can result in stress. Divorce and separation (which stem from dysfunctional relationships) are among the top causes of stress.

Environment

The environment can also be a present a matter in stress management. A publication by Mayo Clinic has that uncontrolled noise, as well as excessive light can induce stress.

Self-Placed Pressure

Perfectionism unduly lofty expectations of oneself can also pose a stressor. People can mount pressure on themselves in order to facilitate achievement, but a lifestyle of running on stressful levels of pressure in order in order to 'meet up' can be detrimental.

Health / 5 Proven Ways To Handle Stress by Timsawyerr: 12:52pm On Nov 20, 2017
Whether it is at work, at home, school, relationships with others, or even in how people feel on their own, stress is not a new word for a lot of people. People feel stressed when they feel that the amount of pressure that is put on them by other people, circumstances, and even themselves, is beyond the level that they can easily cope with.

While a good amount of pressure can have its uses, such as helping to provide the necessary momentum to complete a task or achieve a set goal, an excessive amount of it, if unchecked, and left to go on for too long, can begin to tell on one's productivity, health, and even their relationships. People also sometimes put some pressure on themselves in order to become more productive, and then they seem to forget how to do without it, often resulting in undesirable consequences in various aspects of their lives.

Here are five natural ways to handle stress:

Make Peace With Yourself

One error that can be made when undergoing high levels of stress is to fail to acknowledge the situation and instead try to continue to attend to everything else as though nothing was going on in your body.

Acceptance of the presence of the situation does not mean surrendering power over it. Rather, when we admit that we are experiencing stress at any given time, it can help activate the body's natural relaxation response.

Attempting to keep going without addressing the stress can result in even more stress, since this in itself, is another task that is given the brain.

Talk To Yourself

Just as certain chemical reactions can be induced in the brain by deliberately doing some activities, e.g, smiling as widely as you can to trick the brain into releasing hormones that support happiness, saying positively affirmative statements to oneself during stressful times can help break through the mound of pressure.

Take some time to say positive things to your hearing and in time, a calm state will be induced.

Exercise

Research supports that people who exercise during working days usually record more productivity than those who do not and since the chief cause of stress is the need to be more productive, this could be a gold mine.

Stress causes the muscles to tighten, impeding a free flow of necessary fluids within the body, essentially suffocating the brain, however, what happens when people exercise is that the circulation is improved, making it circulation to be brain easier for improved performance.

Clean Up

While this may easily be overlooked by many as an inconsequential matter of hygiene and organisation, it has also been proven that people work faster and better when they organise their workspace. Working from a disorganised desk, or trying to get anything done within a fuzzy atmosphere can distract one from what actually needs to be attended to, into feeling that the work that needs to be done is more daunting than it actually is.

Taking some time to organise the area and cutting the work into clearer bits can immediately induce a state of improved peace, even before eventually starting on it.

Take A Break

While it may be a useful skill to stay at it until it is done, it will also prove quite useful to take a moment off the stressor(s) and allowing oneself to live away from them before returning to tackle it after a restful time off, doing other unrelated activities, can have a remarkable effect on the quality of work that will be done.

Nairaland / General / 5 Ways To Identify The Tendency For High Intelligence by Timsawyerr: 4:48pm On Nov 16, 2017
High intellectual performance is among the top desires qualities of the human race and in every field and area of life, intelligence is constantly being sought after.

Top organisations and government agencies are always looking to recruit personnel who demonstrate high levels of mental awareness and problem-solving skills, people are excited by intellectually stimulating friendships since even being funny requires a creative way of thinking, which is one form of intelligence, and of course, single people are looking to get establish relationships with clever people. No one really wants a date with someone who takes the entire evening to understand anything that they say.

A study published by Psychology Today reveals some of these pointers to high mental ability.

Identifying the traits which point to high intelligence levels can help to stimulate improvement by means of awareness, as well as to appreciate and compliment them in others.

While these traits do not necessarily determine intelligence, they are signs that have been observed by experts as regular pointers to a high level of mental capability in individuals.

A research done at the University of British Columbia, however, also says, however, that the brain is plastic in nature, hence, intelligence can be cultivated as well.

The traits include:

Nocturnal Activity:

wanting to stay up late into the night has been identified as one of the signs that you, or that person you know, might actually be holding a high level of mental performance. People who exhibit this trait prefer to tackle mentally demanding tasks particularly night and usually enjoy staying up late.

Longer Sleep:

Also among the traits of high mental performance is the tendency to sleep long. This gives the brain more time to 'get some rest', making mental performance even easier. Note, however, that this sleeping for longer is not entirely done by choice. Rather, it is a semi-automated mechanism that the brain initiates for better performance.

Trust And Liberality:

Another trait that is demonstrated by highly intelligent people is that they are better at trusting others.

This is so because one of the qualities of intelligence is the ability to assess others fairly accurately and so with this, clever people are able to determine people who can be trusted.

Inquisitiveness:

Another pointer to high intelligence is the knack to probe virtually everything. Even the things that may have come to be accepted as the norm.

This makes them liable to chart new courses and to be responsible for new ways of doing things, both for themselves and for others as well.

This probably is the most practical trait of the five mentioned here. Simply put, they ask questions about everything for the purpose of making useful findings which they, in turn, apply to create helpful innovations.

Memory:

The obvious of the five. Highly intelligent people excel at remembering things with notable accuracy. This helps in being better students and ultimately, better retainers of knowledge, which they use in creating solutions.

Once more, it is important to take note that the traits mentioned here are not simply choices made by the persons who practice them, even though this can become the case with practice, rather, they are psychological tendencies that show how their brains work naturally, just as some people can curl their tongues and some can not.

Romance / On The Malady Of Divorce In Nigeria by Timsawyerr: 5:00pm On Nov 15, 2017
Whats Happening...

Various reasons ranging from complaints about infidelity, mistreatment and neglect, to even the over-performance of household chores by a spouse, there appears to be a disturbing presence of divorce cases.

When considered on a global scale, it would appear that more people are having difficulties remaining married, even though beautiful wedding ceremonies are put on display on a regular basis.

Interesting Case Study

One Nigerian case of divorce was particularly disturbing.

A husband had expressed his uncertainty about the paternity of a child that was delivered by his wife and alas, it had been the woman who filed for a divorce after the husband had said that he saw his wife with a former lover.

The husband had said expressed that the baby delivered by his wife did not bear a resemblance to him.

Also present at the court hearing was the man with whom the wife was said to have been having an affair and after confirming that he had indeed been having extra-marital relations with her as suspected, he went on to dare the woman's husband to harm her for having an affair with him.

The woman had filed for the divorce from her husband on the claim that he had threatened to stab her with a pair of scissors.

Moved by the depth of the case, the judge decried the moral decline which caused spouses to become chronically unfaithful to their partners, showing little remorse when confronted.

An Important Issue

It appears, really, as if people get married without fully understanding the expectations of their spouses, as well as the responsibilities required to sustain a life-long relationship with another human being.

Since the causes of divorce usually circle around emotional dissatisfaction, infidelity, ineffective communication and sometimes material inadequacy, as was among the complaints of the divorce-seeking wife in this case, then it will do a lot of good for couples and intending couples to deliberately evaluate each other's desires, and then agree on ways to achieve happiness together in marriage.

It is known that people can at times experience variances in preferences at any given time, thus leading to a disagreement, but when communicated and handled with cautiously, minding the other, it does not always have to result in marital catastrophe.

Health / Mental Health; On The Rate Of Suicide In Nigeria by Timsawyerr: 4:38pm On Nov 13, 2017
The news seems to have adapted to stories of individuals taking their own lives as reports of suicide and suicide attempts have regularly made headlines across the news outlets.

Rate Of Suicide In Nigeria
Last week alone a resident of Lagos State, who had been a housemaid, was seen and rescued in a suicide attempt at the popular bridge in the City. Also, there was the story of another, a civil servant in Oyo State who, after also attempting suicide, explained her reasons for seeking to take her life.

While the former housemaid had lamented her ordeal in getting sacked by her boss without pay, she also said that she was fed up with her life and had thought suicide a better recourse.

The civil servant had explained that her attempt was due to the hardship that she was encountering due to the unpaid salaries which civil servants in the state were being owed.

It was also gathered that there had been other civil servants in the state who had taken ill and even died as a result of the financial hardships that were being experienced due to the unpaid salaries.

In June this year, the Senate raised an alarm over the rate of suicide in the country.

During the meeting, the upper chamber of the Senate asked the country's Ministry of Health, both at federal and state levels to embark on a sensitization campaign in order to tackle the societal malady.

Among the objectives of the campaign is the establishment of free mental health stations across government-owned hospitals in the country, both at federal and state levels.

The case is that while the symptoms of many illnesses can be readily observed through their visible effects, the conditions that result to such acts as suicide are usually unperceived, hence the need to promote the awareness of mental health among Nigerians in order to stop the rise of suicide among the Nigerian populace.

The Senate urged Nigerians to be more sensitive to signs of unhappiness, depression, and to seek professional help where necessary.

The unanimously adopted resolutions that were reached at the sitting followed a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu on the Need to ensure the provision of accessible and affordable mental health for the Nigerian populace.

While many treat depression as a simple occurrence which can be dealt with simply, medical experts agree that depression is an actual illness for which medical attention ought to be sought.

Nigeria, in the 2015 world happiness report, has been ranked 78th happiest nation in the world, and the 4th in Africa.

Also, reports published in March 2017 rated Nigeria as the 95th happiest nation in out of 155 countries listed.

Whether it is triggered by financial reasons, or due to personal convictions, the rise of suicide among any people is a sign that happiness is becoming harder to obtain by many.

The ones who attempt it are seen and mourned by loved ones, and by the nations as well, but what is to be done about those who continue to nurse unhappiness and depression, struggling through each day?
