Celebrities / I’ll Marry At 75 – Yeni Kuti by Tiola1: 1:50pm On Jun 07, 2020
Dancer and daughter of the late Afrobeat originator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Yeni, has finally answered the question that many have been asking for a long time. She told Sunday Scoop when she would eventually be getting married. She said, “I have a partner and we have started our marriage plans. We would get married when I am 75 years old.”

Kuti also noted that the closure of event centres, including the New Afrikan Shrine, had taken its toll on the entertainment sector. She said, “With this lockdown, I’m broke. Our kind of business is not what one can run online. People have to come to the Shrine to enjoy themselves and that’s when they patronise us.”

The retired dancer also maintained that it was wrong to flaunt luxurious items in the midst of excruciating poverty in the land. She said, “I don’t do that (post flashy things). Even if I can afford it, I am not that kind of person. In a country where so many people are hungry, why should one want to flaunt designer products? You can do that if you are in America where most people are comfortable. I could post a picture of myself dressed up but not wearing designer items. Life is transient. All the things in this world can’t be taken anywhere with one when one dies. Now, we are not even allowed to attend any social gathering, so if one has the best shoes and clothes, one can’t wear them to anywhere.”

She also admonished Nigerians not to feel depressed by whatever they saw on social media. She added, “I don’t think they should feel oppressed. Some people actually post things to make themselves feel good. They too might be having issues in their lives and maybe it is those postings that make them feel better. I don’t think anyone should lead their life based on what others are doing. I don’t do that; I do what I feel is right. One shouldn’t be envious of any other person because you don’t know what the person is going through.”

Politics / May Day: Buhari Sends Message To Nigerian Workers (full Text) by Tiola1: 1:06am On May 02, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that no employer would retrench workers without going through due process.

Buhari said his government will ensure that no employer would retrench or lay off workers without going through due process of social dialogue, which include consultations with workers and with the Competent Authority, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

He said this in his message to workers to marks International Workers Day, on Friday.

The message was read on Buhari’s behalf by Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, during a virtual meeting with Labour leaders via ZOOM, in consonance with the social distancing policy and was contained in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Demi Adesina.

Full text of the speech reads below:

Greetings Nigerian Workers! It is 1st May – May Day today but we know that something is not right not just in our nation but globally. Today is a day set aside for workers to celebrate the success of their historical struggles to have a “voice” in the world of work. It is equally a day to celebrate their partnership with relevant stakeholders to achieve sustainable development and contribute to the progress of nations in contemporary times. It is a day to mark and acclaim workers’ productivity in nation – building. But today, May 1, 2020, the usual pomp and ceremony characterized by sounds of drumming and march past by various Trade Unions and their Federations are missing in all the stadia throughout the Federation including our Abuja Eagle Square. This is so because we are fighting an invisible enemy to humanity termed Covid-19 pandemic.

In a bid to win this war, we set up a Presidential Task Force (PTF) made up of the relevant sector Ministers and highly skilled Health Technical Experts The government had to in a well-designed Expert Advice, lock down some States of the Federation where this pandemic is most prevalent – the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Ogun and Lagos States. Lagos State was and still is the EPICENTRE of the disease and of late Kano had to follow because of the new eruptions of Covid-19 in the State.

Offices, businesses, and various forms of out-door activities have been put in abeyance so that “WE” as opposed to “I” factor may prevail so that we may live for tomorrow. Yes, it is a common problem and interest and it is at this time that we must be our brother’s keeper by ensuring that “I protect myself and protect others from me”. I, therefore, ask Nigerian Workers both in the Public and Private Sectors with her FORMAL and INFORMAL ECONOMY to bear the stringent measures for a while for our common good. This would enable us put the ravaging pandemic under control and restore normalcy within the confines of relevant guidelines issued by health experts and the Government for safety against Covid-19 in order to curtail its spread.

I acknowledge that it is not easy but nations globally are in a state of war against this pandemic and in a war situation, survival is paramount.

Though the lock-down had been partially lifted in States aforementioned, except Kano State, workers are enjoined to observe subsequent rules and regulations issued to ensure the safety of all Nigerian citizens.

I understand the anxiety which has plagued the minds of workers over the possibility of job losses due to economic downturn caused by the pandemic and lock-down especially in the private sector. In this regard, the Government will ensure that no employer would retrench or lay off workers without going through due process of social dialogue which includes consultations with workers and with the Competent Authority – Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Furthermore, I had earlier put in place a Presidential Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) with the objective of developing a credible sustainability plan for repositioning the Nigerian economy now and post Covid-19 crisis period. The ESC is required to specifically explore ways and means of growing our non-oil sector – all in a bid to minimise the adverse effects of the current crisis and to also protect existing jobs and even create new jobs to help absorb the teeming army of the unemployed even before the crises.

I conclude by expressing my appreciation to Medical Doctors and Healthcare Workers as well as their respective organisations, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU). These Health workers are doing a great service for humanity. I thank you all. I have directed that requisite incentives and hazard allowances enhancement and insurance for lives should be taken at these perilous times in favor of our Health Sector workers as a way of showing our appreciation. Also, personal protective equipment for their safety is also guaranteed.

Great Nigerian Workers, your resilience in times of adversity is not questionable. I appreciate you all and I know that with collective will and sense of responsibility, as a team, we shall triumph as a nation.

Observe all the Health Protocols as already established by the World Health Organisation (WHO), in terms of hygiene, wash your hands regularly, observe Social Distancing, and Stay Safe.

God bless you all.

Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Health / UNBELIEVABLE!!! Woman Delivers 'stone Baby' After 60 Year Pregnancy by Tiola1: 5:33pm On Apr 17, 2020
In a bizarre turn of events straight out of Mr. Ripley’s personal files, comes this true story of a 92-year-old woman who delivered a child (albeit not a live baby) she had been carrying for over half a century! (Long pregnancies are one thing, but THAT is ridiculous!)

Huang Yijun, aged 92, is from southern China and she recently made news after delivering a baby known as a lithopedion, aka ‘Stone Baby’.

Huang Yijun told the press she didn’t have the money to have her fetus removed after doctors told her it had died inside her in 1948.

So she simply did nothing at all about it.

Lithopedion is a very rare medical phenomenon, which occurs when a pregnancy fails and the fetus actually calcifies while still in the mother’s body.

Medically speaking, what often happens is the implanted fetus gets to an advanced stage before it dies. Too large to be absorbed by the body, the remains of the child or its surrounding amniotic sac slowly calcify, turning to stone as a way to protect the woman’s body from infection from the decomposing tissue.

If no complications occur, believe it or not, the mother can basically just go on with her life.

According to the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, only 290 cases of lithopedions have ever been documented by medical literature.

Foreign Affairs / Coronavirus: King Self-isolates With 20 Women (photo) by Tiola1: 9:47pm On Mar 31, 2020
The king of Thailand has gone into self-isolation during the coronavirus outbreak with 20 women at a grand hotel in southern Germany, according to IgbereTV reports.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as Rama X, is reported to have booked out all of the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl in Bavaria to self-isolate during the coronavirus pandemic.

The 67-year-old king booked out all of the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl in Bavaria after getting the special permission from local officials.

The king intended on having more of his party at the hotel, however, 119 members of the royal entourage are thought to have been sent back to Thailand amid concerns they might have contracted Covid-19.

Hotels in the region were ordered to close due to the coronavirus crisis, but a spokesperson for the local district council said the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl was an exception because “the guests are a single, homogenous group of people with no fluctuation”.

Reacting to the report of Vajiralongkorn’s apparent self-isolation in a luxury location, thousands of Thai people risked breaking the country’s law in a social media protest against the king.

Investment Ads / Saudi Urges Muslims To Defer Hajj Plans Over Coronavirus by Tiola1: 8:45pm On Mar 31, 2020
Saudi Arabia’s hajj minister asked Muslims on Tuesday to temporarily defer preparations for the annual pilgrimage amid uncertainty over the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia suspended the year-round “umrah” pilgrimage over fears of the new coronavirus spreading to Islam’s holiest cities, an unprecedented move that raised uncertainty over the annual hajj.

“Saudi Arabia is fully ready to serve pilgrims and umrah seekers,” hajj minister Mohammad Benten told the state-run Al-Ekhbariya television.

“But under the current circumstances, as we are talking about the global pandemic… the kingdom is keen to protect the health of Muslims and citizens and so we have asked our brother Muslims in all countries to wait before doing (hajj) contracts until the situation is clear.”

Saudi authorities are yet to announce whether they will proceed with this year’s hajj, scheduled for the end of July.

The pilgrimage – which last year attracted 2.5 million people – is a key revenue earner for the kingdom. But it could be a major source of contagion as it packs pilgrims closely in religious sites.

It was a thing of joy in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital as Governor Kayode Fayemi tested positive to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The results of the test which doused tension and ended speculation over Fayemi’s Covid-19 status, elicited wild jubilation among the members and supporters of the All Progressive Congress in the state.

They stormed major street in Ado-Ekiti metropolis in their numbers singing, drumming and dancing.

The Governor who made the results known through his verified Twitter, @kfayemi had undertaken the test on Wednesday following his close contact with some top presidential aides and the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed who tested positive for the virus.

He had met Senator Mohammed at the Nigeria Governors Forum and National Economic Council meetings.

The Governor who was asymptomatic of the virus, said the test was imperative to ascertain his status following his previous meeting with two people who tested positive for the virus.

While expressing appreciation to Nigerians, most especially the Ekiti ketes for their love, concern and good wishes for him and his family, Fayemi urged residents of the state not panic of the pandemic Coronavirus, instead remained vigilance.

Meanwhile, the combined forces of security agencies have been deployed in the Ado Ekiti Metropolis as part of the desperate measures to enforce Fayemi’s order directing the closure of markets and shops to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

The security agencies, comprising soldiers, police and operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, were deployed around 5.20pm on Thursday after the Ultimatum given by Fayemi, had elapsed.

Fayemi, had on Thursday issued a directive that all shops and major markets like the popular Oja Oba, Irona Market, Basiri market and others be closed down with effect from 5pm on Thursday .

The Governor, however, exempted sellers of drugs ,food items and other essential commodities from the order.

The heavily deployed security agencies immediately took over areas like Atikankan, Irona, Okeyinmi, Ijigbo and the Oja Oba market to enforce the order, which made the sellers to scamper for safety.

They were seen in large number at all the areas where there were large concentration of market stalls.

The action was more terrific at Atikankan where many Hausa sellers with large concentration were plying their trades.

When called for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Mr. Sunday Abutu, said the security agencies must support the government to ensure that every action taken is enforced to guarantee safety of all citizens .

“Since the issue of Coronavirus started, the police as an institution have been working with other stakeholders to make sure that the lives of the citizens are protected and that we will continue to do”.

Concerning the upsurge of robbery at some sections of Ado Ekiti, especially at Emirin Estate and Tenibegiloju along Polytechnic road, Abutu said the police have mapped out strategies to tame the attendant crimes that could accompany the stay at home order .

“We know that the stay at home order will lead to increased crimes and we have stepped up our night patrol across all divisions.

“We are also putting in place other security mesures to ensure that the lives and property of our people are safe with the situation caused by Coronavirus.

“We are appealing to our people to shun vices and cooperate with police through useful information, because all our divisions have been mandated to work hard this time to make Ekiti a no go area for criminals”, he said.

An Italian employee of the Holy See who lives in the same residence as Pope Francis was reported Thursday to have tested positive for COVID-19 and has been hospitalised.

Several Italian newspapers with reputable sources in the Vatican said the clergyman has lived for years in the Saint Martha’s guesthouse.

Messaggero said the person is “one of the pope’s closest collaborators, an official of the Secretariate of the State, who was found to have a slight temperature after going in for a routine check”.

The daily La Stampa said the unnamed person has been hospitalised in Rome and that his office has been disinfected.

Pope Francis has remained largely secluded at his residence since coming down with a cold late last month.

The 83-year-old pontiff has a small apartment in the building and takes his meals there.

He also has private meetings and occasionally moves to the Vatican library to record livestreamed messages to the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.

La Stampa said Pope Francis has been “eating alone in his room for some time” as a precaution.
Politics / NERC Boss Tests Negative For Coronavirus by Tiola1: 2:01pm On Mar 26, 2020
The Management of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), said on Thursday that its Chairman, Prof. James Momoh, had tested negative for the Covid-19 virus.

There had been apprehension over Momoh’s health status earlier in the week, following media reports that he was part of a delegation of the Federal Government which recently visited Germany and Egypt.

Describing the insinuations as misleading, the regulatory agency noted that the chairman had however carried out a test , which it said came out negative.

Some of those Prof. Momoh was said to have participated alongside with, including senior government officials, are now in self isolation after the meeting with the executives of Siemens in Germany.

A statement by Mr Michael Faloseyi, the Manager in charge of Government, External and Industry Relations, in Abuja, however said that Momoh had taken the test just to be sure, adding that he had been given a clean bill of health after his return from the United States.

“Breaking the news of his test result, Momoh said, ‘I have been tested negative to COVID-19.

“But let me say that this is a trying moment that requires our collective efforts. I will advise our media houses to hold themselves to the highest standards of professionalism.

“Rumours and misinformation can frustrate the significant efforts of the government, private sector, and the international community in combating this virus,” he said.

He prayed for the healing of those receiving treatment, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, who tested positive to the virus recently.

The condemned persons also bagged five years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy and attempted murder, except the second accused person, who was sentenced to 10 years.

According to the charges, the offences ran contrary to sections 516, 320 and 316 of the Criminal Code, CAP C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecutor, Oluwakemi Daniel, had told the court that the offences were committed on or about February 7, 2017, in Ilupeju Ekiti, when the convicts conspired to murder one Sola Adeniyi, 27, and also attempted to murder a motorcyclist, Ojo Olaoluwa, 22.

Politics / FG Alerts Nigerians To Dangerous Computer Coronavirus by Tiola1: 5:54am On Mar 25, 2020
The Federal Government on Tuesday raised the alarm over the existence of an Android-based malicious and fraudulent coronavirus Ransomware application, which claims to provide updates on COVID-19 and infections near the user.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement by his Special Assistant, Mr Segun Adeyemi, said the Ransomware blocks access to users’ personal data and accounts and threatens deletion, unless users pay $100 in Bitcoin within 48 hours

He said the Ransomware App, detected on the website www.coronavirusapp.site, “prompts users to download an Android App purportedly for coronavirus map tracking and heat map visuals.”

Mohammed said the development confirmed warnings against cybercriminals seeking to exploit the growing spread of the virus for nefarious gains.

The minister, therefore, called on the general public not to download the Ransomware App and to seek updates on the pandemic only from the appropriate authorities.
Culture / Court Sacks Enugu Monarch For Presenting Fake Certificate by Tiola1: 5:47am On Mar 25, 2020
Hon. Justice Afam Nwobodo of the Enugu State High Court has sacked the traditional ruler of Umuogbugbuagu Autonomous Community, Ugwuoba in Oji River Local Government Area of the State, Chief Anayo Anochili.

He held that Anochili was not qualified ab initio to contest for the Igweship stool, having presented a questionable Secondary School Certificate.

Justice Nwobodo gave the sack order while delivering judgment in a suit challenging the eligibility of the sacked traditional ruler on Tuesday by his co-contestant to the throne, Chief Nathan Nwangwu.

Nwangwu had dragged the embattled monarch to court, seeking to be declared the rightful person to occupy the Igweship seat of the community.

He added that his presentation to the government for recognition was truncated by Anochili.

Anochili, however, told the court that he polled the majority of lawful votes cast during the Igweship election, and was thereafter presented with a letter of recognition.

After reviewing their arguments, Justice Nwobodo said he found merits in the arguments of the plaintiff, Nwangwu, that Anochili was not qualified in the first place.

He held that the defendant “has since tendered his school certificate before this court as Exhibit 16. The said certificate is dated June 2004 and bears the name of Anochili Anayo C. born on February 1, 1979. Meanwhile, Exhibit 2 filled by the 2nd defendant shows that he was born on the 1st day of September, 1965.

“Can it be said that the candidate for the Igwe stool in Exhibit 2 and the owner of the school certificate Exhibit 16 is the same person? My answer is in the negative.

Now, even if the purpose of argument, that they are the same person, the question is, was the 2nd defendant qualified to contest for the office of the Igwe of Umuogbugbuagu Autonomous Community as the time he filled the form on 30th October, 2003? My answer is emphatic No.”

Based on the above, Justice Nwobodo gave an order restraining the defendants of their agents from conducting any further election or selection on the Igweship for Umuogbugbuagu Autonomous Community.

“The 2nd defendant is hereby restrained by the order of this court from parading himself of being paraded by any other person as His Royal Highness, Igwe Cyril Anayo Anochili or performing any duties customarily reserved for the Igwe of Umuogbugbuagu Autonomous Community.

The court hereby declares that the 3rd plaintiff is the qualified candidate for Igweship of Umuogbugbuagu Autonomous Community and was duly elected/selected the Igwe Elect as at 1st January, 2004,” he said.

THE Senate Tuesday vowed to issue a warrant of arrest on the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele following his refusal to appear before it to defend the release of $289 million to former National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke in cash.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja on the investigation, Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Edo South said that the Governor of the apex bank has been summoned several times before the committee on the $289 million but vehemently ignored the invitation of the Committee.

The Senate had last week uncovered how CBN allegedly released $289 million to former NIA Director General.

Senator Urhoghide who explained that the warrant of arrest has become imperative because there was no official of the CBN that deemed it important to honour the invitations of the Committee on the ongoing investigation, said, ” We have summoned CBN Governor, it is the only part remaining in the investigation, neither has the CBN Governor sent any of his official, they have to corroborate the story whether they are correct or not correct.
The Committee is considering to issue warrant of arrest on Governor of Central Bank. Over 10 issues are needed to be addressed by CBN Governor.”

Urhoghide said further that other issues like sales of of Federal Bounds, collection Account and discrepancies in figures between the agencies and CBN needed to be addressed by the Governor of Apex bank.
Recall that fresh facts emerged before the Senate last week that the money found in the Ikoyi swanky apartment of the former NIA Director- General, Ayodele Oke by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was a fraction of $289million cash collected by the DG from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

The revelation came three years after the $43million scandal that led to the sacking of Ayodele Oke as the Director – General of NIA.

The information was unfolded to the Senator Matthew Urhoghide led Senate Committee on Public Accounts by the Financial Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Godwin Okonkwo.

Okonkwo who noted that the $289million cash given to the former NIA boss by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBNwas based on directive to that effect from NNPC, stressed that NNPC gave directive for release of the said money by CBN to NIA but explained that NNPC’s action was also based on directive from the presidency then.

According to him, the gave approval for payment of the said amount to NIA on February 16, 2015 which was however carried out by the CBN on February 24 ,2015 to the former DG and not the Agency.

Okonkwo had said, “Yes, we complied with the request. It is not true that we said the money should be paid to the Director – General but to the NIA as an institution.

“I’m not defending NIA for requesting for the money to be paid in cash but considering the circumstances, which is for security purposes.

“NNPC obliged because we are not in charge of security. If they request for payment in cash and they said it is for security, and that it must be transfered through electronic means to a particular account, NNPC cannot say no because If anything happens afterwards, NNPC will be held responsible ”

Politics / Ex-ministers Jailed For Stealing Ebola Funds by Tiola1: 11:41pm On Mar 23, 2020
DR Congo’s former health minister, who led the fight against a deadly Ebola outbreak, was sentenced to jail along with a colleague on Monday for stealing funds destined to fight the disease.

Oly Ilunga was sentenced to five years in jail by the Court of Cassation, while the former finance minister for Kinshasa province, Guy Matondo, got eight years.

Ilunga, who was health minister between December 2016 until his resignation in July last year, and a colleague are accused of embezzling $400,000 (372,000 euros) from the Ebola war chest.

The latest Ebola epidemic, the country’s 10th since 1976, has killed over 2,200 people. It was first identified in August 2018.

In a statement, Ilunga denied wrongdoing, denouncing “several procedural flaws” in the trial.

A ruling by the Cassation Court cannot be appealed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Matondo’s lawyer, Michel Omba, said his client’s eight-year sentence was a “judicial scandal.

Matondo was charged with siphoning off $21.7 million and 235 million Congolese francs ($147,000).

Both men were sentenced to hard labour, but such sentences are not executed in the DRC and they will serve their terms in prison.

President Felix Tshisekedi has made the fight against corruption one of his government’s priorities.

Ilunga was close to Tshisekedi’s father, a veteran opposition leader. He was a doctor in Brussels before he joined the government.

Health / Coronavirus: Wuhan Residents Resume Work As China Eases Restrictions by Tiola1: 8:45pm On Mar 23, 2020
People in Central China where the coronavirus was first detected are allowed to go back to work and public transport is restarting, as some normality slowly returns after a two-month lockdown.

The easing of restrictions in Wuhan city comes as Chinese health officials reported Monday no new local cases of the deadly virus but confirmed another 39 infections brought from overseas.

Wuhan residents considered healthy can move around the city and take the bus or metro so long as they show ID, officials said.

They can also go back to work if they have a permit from their employer, and leave the city for other parts of the surrounding Hubei province after being tested for the virus and receiving a health certificate.

The virus, which emerged in a market that sold wild animals in December, sparked a dramatic lockdown of the city on January 23 that was then widened to the rest of the province of nearly 60 million people.

The number of persons infected has slowed dramatically and for five straight days and there have been no new cases in Hubei.

Another nine people died in Wuhan, the National Health Commission said Monday in its latest update.

The easing of restrictions follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the city earlier this month — his first since the crisis erupted.

As the rate of infection slows in China, the rest of the world has stepped up measures to try and battle the raging pandemic.

China is anxious about an influx of infections brought in from other countries, with the number of imported cases climbing steadily in recent weeks to pass 350.

Of the 39 new cases reported Monday, 10 were in Shanghai and 10 were in Beijing.

Many cities have brought in tough rules to quarantine new arrivals.

Authorities have said all Beijing-bound international flights will be diverted to other cities where they will be screened for the virus to help make the process more efficient.

Those who get the all-clear will be allowed to continue to Beijing where they will still be sent to quarantine facilities.

There have now been over 81,000 cases in China, and the death toll has reached 3,270.
