The best thing that can happen to any writer is to join a club for writers. Writing is the only profession you can't go solo.

You can get as much of everything you want if you can help others get theirs.

The only writers that suceed are those that cast their bread on water. I.e those that self published compared to the traditional lane of looking for a publisher to writer a 10 thousand dollar check. Most established authors you know, started off by self publishing.
Make the name, publishers will then beg to sign you up. Trust me am talking from experience.

Most nigerian writers want to write lofty, incomprehensible messes that nobody can identify with, they forget that a story should entertain as well as educate. I have read some of the best novels ever written, from Vanity Fair, to Jane Eyre to Of Mice and Men to The Catcher in the Rye to The elegance of the Hedgehog and what they have in common is that they are entertaining as well as profound.

Secondly many Nigerian writers don't read. How can you be a good writer when you don't read the works of other writers? Nigerian writers want to study courses on how to write meanwhile they don't know who Tolstoy or Dostoevsky are, do not understand Shakespeare and cannot be bothered with the humour of Jane Austen! The best teachers of writing are books! Read read and read, read good books so that when you write you can know how good your writing is by how it reads to you.

Publishing is a broad step with many parts. A publisher actually don't charge for ISBN. When you give them a book to publish, your fees covers everything.
Nevertheless, you can buy an ISBN from the publisher for 6000 naira. I.e if you want to self publish.

It is interesting to hear about your book. You can get ISBN from the National Library in Lagos or Abuja. Just collect the form, write an application letter and submit with your manuscript.
