Politics / Re: Jimi Agbaje Speaks On ‘dumping’ PDP For APC by tooyinpe(m): 11:15pm On Jun 05, 2019 |
Wisdom58: Oboagwina, media aide to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate in the 2019 elections in Lagos State, Mr Jimi Agbaje, has denied reports that his principal had dumped the opposition party. Oboagwina told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that social media posts that Agbaje had left the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) were untrue.
NAN reports that the posts that Agbaje had joined APC have featured prominently on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook in the past few days.
One of the posts sighted by a NAN on WhatsApp and Facebook on Wednesday read “Lagos PDP finally emptied as Jimi Agbaje defects to APC’’.
It was also reported that former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George, on Wednesday disclosed that the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State in the last election, Jimi Agbaje, appears to have joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.
George also revealed that Agbaje failed in the last election because ‘he thinks he knows it all’, adding that it was Lagos people who worked against him.
He said that Agbaje originally come from the APC and had been part of the ruling party in the state from the beginning. Reacting, Oboagwina described the reports as fake news, saying they were figments of the imaginations of the authors. He said that Agbaje was still very much in the PDP and that there was no way he could have joined APC on social media. “There is nothing like that, nothing like that at all. He is still in PDP; he has not defected.
“How can people say he has defected on social media? He is too big for that; he is in PDP,” Oboagwina said.
When asked if there were plans by his p rincipal to dump the PDP for the APC, he answered in the negative.

Education / Re: 2019 UTME: JAMB Speaks On Cut-off Marks by tooyinpe(m): 11:13pm On Jun 05, 2019 |
Wisdom58: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has not published the national and general minimum cut-off marks for placement of candidates into the nation’s tertiary institutions as was being speculated in some quarters.
The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to him, there is no truth behind such speculations, adding that some persons, whom he described as fraudulent elements were behind the development with a ploy to defraud innocent Nigerians especially the candidates.
Benjamin said the cut-off marks could only be arrived at with the inputs of critical stakeholders in the education sector scheduled for days ahead.
“We want to seize this opportunity to caution the public especially candidates, not to allow themselves to be swindled by these desperate individuals that are peddling this rumour.
“The board is yet to come up with any cut-off mark for placements into the various tertiary institutions across the country.
“The cut-off marks cannot be decided upon without the input of critical stakeholders of the education sector at an elaborate policy meeting,” he said.
Benjamin explained that the next policy meeting would be holding on Tuesday, June 11, at Gbongan in Osun.
He disclosed that already, preparations for the meeting had been concluded, adding that officials of the Ministry of Education were expected to attend.
According to him, other key stakeholders were also expected to grace the occasion to determine the national cut-off mark.
The JAMB spokesman said that it was only after this had been achieved that the candidates would be availed of the cut-off marks of the various tertiary institutions across the country.
“The cut-off marks are the minimum expectation for every institution and that does not mean by attaining such cut-off mark, it therefore means an automatic placement into schools of first choice.

Education / Re: Nigeria Scraps Award Of HND Certificates By Polytechnics by tooyinpe(m): 12:55pm On May 22, 2019 |
Galadimat: Nigeria Scraps Award of HND Certificates by Polytechnics – The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system, scrapping the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by the nation’s polytechnics. In effect, the award of the HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes. Also, all the programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped. Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils. The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university. To kick-start the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic – will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna. And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law. With education being on the concurrent list, the states may wish to consolidate their tertiary institutions. But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education. The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities. The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly. Minister of Education, Mall. Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, her ministry would, however, continue to licence private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels. She said: “There will be no more award of HND. After we have exhausted the current students under the programme, there will be no more award of HND. This means that there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes. And in addition, any programme that is not technical will be out of the polytechnics. About 70 per cent of polytechnic graduates are in the non-technical courses. It is going to be a rigorous implementation programme.” A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately. Mall. Adamu said: “The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place. The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education. Any higher qualifications by these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university. So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.” The council also approved the Federal Government’s formal take-over of the Waziri Umaru Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, which will be the College of Technology campus of the Othman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, as well as the Hussein Adamu Polytechnic, Kazaure, Bauchi, which will be a College of Technology of the proximate university in the state. Also, the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, Imo State, has been taken over as a campus of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. A state that had never had any federal institution, like Bayelsa, is to have a College of Technology as a campus of the College of Technology of the University of Port Harcourt.
